There's no denying that this novel is addictive—at least during certain parts in the beginning and middle, particularly the early marriage arc. However, many parts are awfully draggy. The entire subplot about the FL's various prospects and endless betrothal drama was stretched far too long. So many love interests. I almost dropped it, but netizens praised the second half, where the ML and FL get together, so I pushed through. And to be fair, the second half didn't disappoint—once the main couple is established, the story improves noticeably.

Still, the novel has its flaws. I wasn't a fan of how much attention was given to certain side characters, especially Dou Ming and Wei Tingyu. I really didn't need extended discourses framing them as foils to the FL—it just felt excessive and grating, like buzzing flies that wouldn't go away. Scenes like that dragged the pacing down and made me consider quitting more than once. At times, the story felt like a soap opera (and not in the good way, like My Mother-in-Law Is Reborn [Seventies]).

Character motivations were also confusing. Not the logic itself, which was often sound—but the basic emotional drives that propel the plot felt murky or exaggerated. Is so much melodrama really necessary? Some characters lacked even basic common sense—and not just one or two of them. It felt like a trend. That said, for all its flaws, the novel remained readable—until chapter 415.

When I got to chapter 415, I just couldn't continue anymore. In that chapter, the FL is startled by a black cat owned by the ML's younger brother when she walks into his wing room. She admits she's afraid—mainly because the cat is black. Absolutely ridiculous. Later, the ML then decides to have the cat sent away. In the same chapter, the FL claims to feel sorry for pets.

I can't stress enough how much this bothered me. My own black cat recently went missing, and this scene struck a nerve. I didn't even want to find out how the author might try to spin this as a plot device. The whole attitude of the main characters toward pets left a bad taste in my mouth.

This is the kind of thing I absolutely cannot tolerate. The casual, "so-it-is," "understandable" way they decide to send the pet away—framing pets as dangerous to children? The FL even suggests it would be better to adopt a white cat or one of a 'better' color. I just cannot express my disdain enough. I honestly don't know whether to call that superstition or racism toward black cats.

Also what's wrong with black cats? They're adorable little babies. I was under the impression that in ancient China, people actually took cat adoption quite seriously. The author clearly doesn't understand pets—or the love people have for them. That was my breaking point. I couldn't continue after that. I am petty like that. <<less

It started off well, but then the push pull game between the ML and the FL became increasingly repetitive. The creative license was stretched so far that the characters barely even resembled themselves midway through the novel. It’s so unrealistic, it’s rather frustrating to read and I’d rather find something else.
