----- Observation of my reading so far -----

Great writing and characterization of the characters, especially the male protagonist. There is a very immersive psychological layer to Ulrich's cruel nature. Even though, at first, his character does not reveal his abusive tendencies, the way the author still manages to convey the darkness of the character through subtle details is fascinating—a very meticulous touch. From him making the protagonist's mother change her plans with the FL just to avoid disrupting his routine, to his deliberately uncomfortable speeches at unexpected moments. These are small details that expose exactly how selfish and apathetic the character is toward everyone.

I believe even the reader is fooled into thinking Ulrich's narcissistic behavior is just the typical "cruel ML" trope found in novels. The female lead has a defined personality, though very mild—likely to contrast with the ML's nature. A kind young bride who dreams of being a teacher and works at an orphanage. I admire how the author crafted a distinct personality within such a clichéd characterization, though I confess I was disappointed by the use of a love triangle to emphasize how terrible the male protagonist is. Maybe it's because I read Cry, Even Better If You Beg before and noticed the similarities: the sweet, gentle FL archetype and the "good guy breakup" plot.

Still, I prefer the FL here. Personally, I’m not a fan of the narrative choice where the female protagonist has pure feelings for a better man, only to have that relationship destroyed by the male lead. It feels like a deliberate, deceitful way to show that she lost her chance at happiness—as if her peace depended solely on romantic love with a "prince charming" who would never hurt her.

But I appreciate that, in this story, the author didn’t reduce the FL’s anguish to just losing her man. Instead, it’s about her being trapped with a horrible one. I like her relationship with her mother much more and the importance it has in the story.   <<less

It has some of the greatest s*xual tension I've seen in a long time, and I really like the characterization of the FL as a broken and quiet woman. Her past justifies who she has become, and I love how she chooses to make herself vulnerable and controlled by the ML. I adore how the author reveals the character's addiction through details, especially through her reactions. The ML is also a very interesting character—he is cruel without being abusive, yet he does not tolerate disrespect. His obsession with the FL arises for a very interesting reason, one that fits cohesively with his characterization.

But the dark and melancholic tone of the story is definitely one of my favorite things. It's a shame the translation is very questionable—many details of the author's writing were lost. <<less

The male lead himself epitomizes an obsessive, violent man who threatens everyone except the female protagonist. While his archetype is cliché, I believe this story adds deeper layers. He’s unapologetically sexist and jealous, yet because the FL willingly submits to him, their relationship has no conflict because of this. Instead, it presents a power dynamic where both embrace outdated gender roles—a consistency that fits the novel’s historical setting perfectly. <<less
