I don't really hate Yan Wushi, in fact I love him. He's not unreasonably evil. Ever heard of philosopher Glaucon? He argued that humans are selfish and unjust by nature; when one's not looking, everyone is bound to do things according to self-interest only. He further demonstrated his point in "The Ring of Gyges". 

Yan Wushi was someone who had the seen the worst of humans. His actions was TRYING TO PROVE why he had lost his faith in them. Meanwhile, Shen Qiao is someone who had also seen the worst of everyone but he was firm on his principles. Shen Qiao isn't one of those annoying and overly righteous protagonists. If someone paid kindness with ingratitude, he also wouldn't keep treating them kindly. He knows when someone is a lost cause, or when they're not. 

Both characters are fighting for their own principles. This representation of YIN & YANG brings balance to the novel which makes it a really interesting read.  <<less

MC and ML are really likeable. Their character compliments each other. At a certain point, you may feel the progress between the main couple is lacking. It's not that, it's precisely because the romance is already there that there's barely no need for progress. This...

actually has a MAJOR PLOT TWIST. I cannot tell any more than that without spoiling. 

Some says this novel confused them a lot. It's because it was designed to confuse you. Read until the end and everything will be understood all at once. 

Nitpicks: Author failed to delve deeper on some characters who seems relevant. They were merely introduced on passing, did alot of atrocious things, but in the end, we barely only get a glimpse of them. THE MAIN FOCUS IS ON 3 CHARACTERS ONLY. 

The entirety of the novel, feels like we've only given a chance to 'get a glimpse' of a certain happening in over thousand years of the MC and ML's life. They are immortals after all...

It's a happy ending. But this made me felt empty, lonely and bitter sweet in the end.  <<less

This is basically ALL-IN-ONE novel because of the world-hopping. But it's main focus was on REVENGE. Every character on each storyline are wronged and died so Zhou Yunsheng (the MC) was there to help them get revenge. The way the MC and ML carried their mission is pretty satisfying though. The ML is not different in each worlds, it's the same soul but with different identity.

What I really liked about this novel is that the characters, despite being mature than their actual age, it doesn't neglect the part where it shows that they are still teenagers, just like any other boys, struggling with the ways of life. Some might say the events that took place with a bunch of kids dealing with it are kinda unrealistic. On the contrary, if it's not already happening in real life, I think it's feasible. A shell gets tough once exposed to hardship. Kids are young and vigorous after all, what hardship can't they endure?

MC and ML are both logical. They also don't sports the 'cold and indifferent' type of coolness. In fact, they don't need to act cool at all. They are fine just by being themselves. They are flawed but they aren't ashamed of showing their weaknesses to each other and neither of them drags on the drama or misunderstanding. Each moments portrayed in the story are precious, just like how the saying goes that it's in high school where you can enjoy life to the fullest. The way the author narrates the story, I especially thinks it's wonderful. It carries some kind of magical yet powerful feeling—NOSTALGIA. If you are of the same age as the characters, you can relate. If you're passed the age, it will take you back in the days. 

Exceptionally and beautifully written—absolutely recommended. You won't regret this.

Nitpicks: It distresses me how are the absentees of parents are portrayed here. Although, it DOES really happen in real life.  <<less

Xu Xilin is a not-really law abiding, but big hearted young boy. He has a sunny personality which makes everyone listen to him. He was reared by a cool mother and lovely grandmother. Dou Xun is an anti-social who came from a broken family. Two different boys; brought together by fate.They started off with animosity in between, but became the bestest of friends—to more than friends.

From teenage years to adulthood, the novel depicted the different challenges of life—failure, separation, death, and love. 

Once they were together; and then they were apart. 'Through the Strait Gates' tells about how the path of Dou Xun and Xu Xilin crossed once more; in this vast yet narrow road of life.

-I really love this novel, this made me cry and taste the bitterness of life. People are separated not just by distance but also death. People who do good in school won't necessarily lead a good life outside of school. Life is a wild ride, sometimes it will hit you hard when you least expect it. That is reality. <<less
