Even though this beautiful novel was written in 2019, a lot of social issues and social intolerances that the author uses to create drama and move the plot are very outdated, absurdly out of step with the times - discrimination of persons with disabilities, of those who were born different, or discrimination of girls/daughters, intense pursuit of good grades and scholarships based on grades, mental illnesses and su*cide of colledge students, even s*xual preferences are judged as disgusting or not, etc. However, this is a novel that describes a world of yet another novel, so I guess it's justifiable. For me the true drama is not there, but in the tragic life of the young... more>> brother of the MC who is destroyed by his upbringing, including our MC's, his sister's, total indifference and scorn.  She is a young woman in her twenties and he is barely a tween when it all started... Maybe the author justifies her as being  originally an orphan from our world  and   that being the reason behind her lack of feeling for the family, I don't know... 

  The storytelling and translation and several key characters in this story, such as the ML and his parents and helpers, are very good though, so I love it. <<less

There are several things that I find hard to swallow in this novel and they mostly have to do with s*x and s*xuality. It is not that the author describes improbable things, they actually do happen in real life. Straight people do sometimes marry folks of the same gender and you can fall in love with someone's voice first, let alone love at first sight - it does happen. Most likely, there is a problem with writing somewhere, there are elements that are jarring, transition from the single life of two bachelors to life of a couple is not handled too well by the author, and by the end it is too clinical of a description of s*x life and ruthless dissextion of s*xual practices of a couple who were born to be together and are a perfect fit in bed. 

Still, this novel is both very sweet and wise, a pleasure to have it in my collection, and I have read it more than once.  <<less

This story has a beautiful beginning, a very boring middle where this novel loses its identity and the FL fades into background while China as a country and its economic environment comes to foreground, and a disgusting last part with the most annoying youngest SIL being reborn and behaving even worse than before. All for the sake of free money of course, but now with an added layer of insatiable s*xual hunger and multiple lovers, free love even in marriage, etc. Thus, this novel completely lost both its charm and dignity.... more>>

 But the beginning is beautiful: a noble young woman from ancient times transmigrates into a fat and unkempt peasant wife from 1980s married to a Chinese soldier and gracefully builds a life and family with him and a dozen of not so easy to appease relatives on both sides. Very nice. As in most of Chinese webnovels of this sort the initial financial success is based on a number of cheats, such as her master level in embroidery skills or the source of spiritual water that makes everyone healthy and makes plants and animal grow fast.   <<less

The premise in here is quite unusual. Both the ml and the mc are "bad", unruly, wild young men, and both are doing good things, right things just because the system prohibits one of them to freeload, to be a kept man and he had the benefit of remembering his previous life experiences. This forced goodness or obligatory kindness and system-imposed righteousmess was previously explored in another novel about two "bad" men getting together: Banished to Another World.

The novel is composed of several stories or arks, but their protagonists are not the same couple, although the dynamic is the same and the money grubber is always a transmigree who is forced by the system to rely on his own means to make money by working or swindling which in this novel is still considered to be some kind of honest work, instead of relying on his wealthy hubby, being his kept man.

 The first ark was terrific, the second - boring and otherwise unpleasant AF, I could not even finish it and did not want to know how it would end (the end of the second arc is exceedingly beautiful, of course, heart grippingly beautiful and poignant, and good). It was all about prostit**es and a whorehouse, this, mixed with another topic which I find hard to enjoy - the emperor, his concubine and imperial family, and affairs of his empire, made it unpalatable. Reading it felt like Chinese torture, tbh.

The third couple and their story breaks the pattern, for the MC is completely indifferent towards money, status or being a kept spouse. He is originally from an ancient world, a martial arts genius who transmigrated into our modern time, into Chinese showbiz. He is clean and noble, a good Samaritan all the way, and it is not clear why the system was assigned to him, what to punish him for. 

I dislike the way most c-novels describe Chinese entertainment shows, movie making, actors, agents and directors. Very rarely the authors manage to neutralize their supposed toxicity and build a great story from such characters and in such environment. This one did not succeed. The third story ark in this novel was very unpleasant, even boring, to read due to the overwhelming amount of descriptions and not enough warmth, emotions, action and love. I could feel, in bits and pieces, how pure and true the MC's love for the ML was, but it was not enough to carry the entire arc, to make it interesting or riveting. The thid arc was not as disgusting as the second, for the entertainment industry in this novel did not resemble one giant brothel, the s*x for benefits and money market, at least not that openly, it was only hinted.  It was unpleasant and created aversion because it was boring, too wordy with little spotlight on the relationship or the character growth of either of them. <<less

This novel gets its low rating from the nearly universal hatred towards the ML. I assume, that those readers actually like the FL.

 I have read this story twice, from the FL's and from the ML's point of view or, better say, cheering for one or for another and I find them both equally likeable and unlikeable. I understand them both and I like this story despite its less than perfectly edited translation. 

The story itself is interesting where one main character doesn't really have a goal besides survival in this new to her ancient world, nor does she has anything positive going for her beside her professional medical skills, she was an orphan, an old spinster, a spy and a surgeon in the modern world, and another character has both a goal and the skills while he also must survive, now he also must survive his own highly suspicious wife, or so he thinks. And they are both married against their will while knowing nothing about marriage, family, or being in love with another person.

They both grow and change a lot and, of course, eventually, become a true couple with kids and a day job, him as a ruler of a huge country which he unified and her as a mother of the nation, wife, mom and doctor to her kids, etc.

 He is a universally good, hard working character, everything that he gets in life he has to work for, there are no cheats, while she is essentially a modern Chinese, a cheater with a huge cheat of a modern medical system in her that forces her to do good deeds (save lives) which makes her look good from the outside as if she was a good Samaritan while she actually does it simply to avoid punishment and escape her own death. Very basic, very low level of motivation in life. She is not noble, he is, but she tries to enjoy life quite a bit more than he does and she is adventurous while he is heroic. 

I really, really like their story.

Both are rather long in the tooth by the time they tie the knot by the imperial decree, close to thirty years of age, she is fifteen (her new body is fifteen) due to transmigration and she transmigrates into a body killed by the ML who does not want to marry that bride. <<less
