In this novel, ML had a wife and a lot of concubines. Tbh that isn’t any issue for me. In one scene, he had to show support to one of the princes, so during a trip out with the royalty he brought MC to accompany him. The prince gifted him with a prostitute from a brothel, and he left MC behind while spending numerous nights with the other woman. He promises that this was only a temporary arrangement yet he gets the prostitute pregnant thus bringing her home. Although to note, MC was quite happy at this as she didn’t want to have s*x w the ML, it still frustrates me at how disrespectful it is.

*Edit! I do understand there’s a reason between his actions and he needed to get the prince to trust him that’s why he ditched the MC to spend time w the prostitute. However you can’t deny his actions are really annoying as he didn’t bother to communicate in the beginning. He’s a two faced schemer, try to get both pies at the same time. I just didn’t enjoy how he treated MC like crap. To accept him as a ML? Ugh, no way.

Continuing on, due to an unfortunate night of passion MC was pregnant. On the delivery date, the main wife and concubines schemed against MC and replaced her child with a cat. -.- Yes, a cat. And blamed MC saying she’s a demon or devil for producing an abomination. And on the date where MC was in pain and giving birth while the other women were scheming to steal the child, the ML just stayed in his office and didn’t bother to deal w anything.

This is the part where I stopped reading. I can accept the sleeping with multiple women, I can accept ML treating MC like crap. But come on, can MC catch a break? This child is the only thing the MC has in her life yet the other women the ML brought in his life took the only thing she has away. The annoying thing is the ML knows what happened and kept mum.

I read spoilers and found out later on ML regrets his actions later on and pursues MC but honestly I can’t be bothered reading this. And MC as a modern woman, to allow all these schemes and behaviour to happen is rather disappointing. It would have made more sense if MC was a woman from the ancient times. 1/10 This novel only gets one point for excellent translation. If you like pain and angst, go ahead and read this book. <<less

The ML is a brat. I get he was reborn and hated the FMC but his tsundere actions were not cute at all. When he finally falls the FMC I thought things were get better but nope. When they get married and about to consummate, it wasn’t enjoyable to read. Although FMC is a modern women, and loves the ML back she always tries to push him away when they were having/about to have s*x. And ML being forceful and trying to negotiate her wasn’t working well for me.

I couldn’t find reading it enjoyable as I would prefer both parties to consent on this. For every s*x scene in this book, MC always begs and pleads no. So you can imagine.

Aside from that, there’s a scene in the novel where MC was injured due to a horse. The ML is a jealous man and he does have trauma from his previous life, however he lets his jealousy overcome him. And although he knows MC loves him and is already married to him, and just left MC all injured alone. Instead he followed the princess (who obviously likes and wants to scheme to be with him) and spends several days with her. Only when his friend approached him and told him hello, what are you doing not spending time with your injured wife. You do know the princess has eyes on you. That’s when he finally realised his mistake -.- and went to find his wife.

At this point in time, we find out when the doctor checked on the wife that she is pregnant. And while she wanted to reach out and tell the ML, the ML was avoiding her and continued spending his days w the princess (who kept showing her gloating face to mc) -.- Of course, when the ML found out she was pregnant he regretted his actions and jealousy and apologised. But this part left a bad taste in my mouth. Like come on, you’re an adult man. Just bc of your petty jealousy you left you’re injured pregnant wife behind and spent time on another woman who obviously likes you.

I would rate this novel a 7/10. Because excellent translation, and although there are annoying parts this is still a good novel that I did enjoyed. <<less

I recommend reading "Di Mou" or otherwise known as "Scheme of the Official Descendant". Don't get turn off by the title or the slowly start, because let tell you all the exposition at the beginning is worth slogging through. The foundation is necessary, because when the story hits the ground running, it goes from 1 to a 100. The MC is one of my favorite, she is smart but not the smartest. Along with the ML who only helps out the MC when she asks for it because he drank his respect woman juice and does not treat the MC like an idiot or damsel in distress. "Di Mou" directly translate to Conspiracy and man is the schemes so layered and deep that you can't see the bottom. Everyone is so fleshed out and nothing is dragged on for the sake of drama. The MC is smart, the ML is smart, the villains are smart, and the side characters are smart. I love the side characters so much. This is the best political and scheming Chinese novel I've ever read. The characters actually scheme at each other instead of obsessively trying to off the MC. The romance is slow burn but you can see step by step how the couple comes to trust each other and then fall in love. Little to no dog blood misunderstanding because it is above that and if does have it only last for about one chapter. Best of all, the MC has a female friend and does not garner the hatred of every female in the vicinity just by existing, a miracle. I MTL binged read all 500 chapters in 3 days and I still want more, though it would take some effort to remember the names and status of the characters. I ranted so much and this story is so underrated that I want to cry sometimes. That being said I hope you would try it out and enjoy it.

  Hello! Thanks for sharing, I’ve actually been looking for a new story on ancient China to read. Tbh I did try reading this novel once.
  But as you mentioned, there were too many names I struggled a little in remembering, but it’s understandable bc the author was trying to lay down the foundation of the story. But I’ll be attempting again now since I’ve really in the mood for some courtyard scheming and palace politics.
  And thanks for letting me know there’s no misunderstandings! I don’t mind a little angst and drama, but some novels drag the misunderstandings far too long that it starts to get exhausting to read.
  Do share more novels, that you enjoy! Would love for more recommendations.
