[★★★★☆]-- Angst Scale: ฅฅฅฅฅฅฅ (7.5/10 paws) ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ... This is very sad. MC is tortured very extremely by both ML and his stepfather (rape, drugging, physical violence, etc.) The only reason I didn't give the angst rating a higher score was because MC doesn't react normally because of his (kinda) changed mental state after being tormented. He also blames ML's "using violence bc of love" on #tragic backstory. And please, tragedy is an understatement. ML (dom) is a complete yandere/possessive psychopath/insane person while MC was ab*sed in the past, and kind of takes the pain (?) /just let it happens

Very, very sad. MC is an orphan and stays together with ML after blackmailing him with "pictures." Eventually, he ends up getting kidnapped, stabbed, and becomes suicidal. His mental state rapidly deteriorates & eventually he becomes like a lifeless doll. The rest of the book (3/4) is a redemption arc. <<less

Haha, don't expect to see a doting and cute love story just bc ML is the all-powerful emperor. Although there is fluff, there is very little in quantity and I have to say, it was pretty sad towards the end. 

ENDING (**SPOILER WARNING**): This can be interpreted as a somewhat happy ending. ML turns out to be the person (along with his mother) to blind MC as a teen with a scorching iron brand, rendering him disabled and having to live cruelly for many years in the cold palace. Although he was the very sheltered and loved young master of a prominent family, he was basically turned into a crippled and thrown away to die in terrible conditions. His only cat was killed by the empress, and ML inflicted so much pain on MC. Still, MC eventually continues to live inside the Imperial Palace in a remote courtyard, and he believes that it is outside and away from the Emperor, but he can't see. ML watches over him silently. <<less

1. This is your average s*um gong ab*se novel.2. This is meant to be a tragic, angsty BL. There is ab*se, violence, misunderstandings, and worst of all:

MC doesn't consider himself a victim. He blames himself, and as the story progresses ML is annoying, even while groveling for forgiveness. TBH, MC would be much better off with the second male lead, though he still cannot get over ML.

This story would be MUCH MUCH better if there were more character depth for ML and MC. I would rate this higher, but their confusing actions & logic/justification muddle me instead of display actual ✨angst✨ <<less

10/10. Absolutely heartbreaking. MC and ML were high school sweethearts. Many parts of the story recount their beautiful youth, and their wonderful memories. ML cheats on MC, multiple times. MC doesn't bother regulating him anymore. Once he learns that he has a terminal illness, he doesn't seem to care about living anymore. This story has a very emotionally vulnerable MC. MC cries when he wants to. He can express his emotions. However, when he deals with ML, he becomes emotionally stunted and unable to communicate.... more>>

This story is sad because it is real. Nan Kang was a real person, with hopes, feelings, ambitions... His boyfriend, who couldn't bear societal pressure, was also a person. Perhaps his decision to end his life in 2008 was a result of a separation after the "seven year itch." There are many unknown factors of this. We cannot assume anything from his death, however, this novel romanticizes and alleviates some of the heavy emotions from this.  <<less
