Summary:

Xiao Hua is a s*ave that has lived a very tough life and has been sold many times before managing to settle in the Marquis of Jinyang’s estate where she became the frivolous fourth master’s favoured concubine. After much struggles and schemes, she still ended up beaten to death and full of regrets.

When she woke up again, Xiao Hua is back where she started when the 14 year-old her first became one of the senior maids of the fourth master. Deciding to live out a peaceful life and avoid her unfortunately end, she plans on keeping her head down until she is released from service. However, she is still implicated due to other peoples schemes and is once again sold to the s*ave traffickers.

Her final destination is the estate of Prince Jing at Jing Province, the vassal state of the Prince Jing. Servants get released with their s*ave history scrapped off at the age of 25, hence Xiao Hua aims to stay under the radar and pass her days care-freely but there are others in the palace that have other plans.

The story is about two unfortunate characters having a second chance at life and how they slowly learn to love and forge a better end.

Comments:

This book does not have dog blood drama. Instead it’s a slow and sweet paced romance with a more low key scheming. Though the initial “pressing down” was a I-have-no-choice-but-to-endure and it-hurts (which is really realistic since she is a mere maid and he’s the master of the palace and it is ancient China), it slowly builds into something sweet that changes both the cautious female protagonist and the apathetic and ‘mute’ Prince Jing.

There are super adorable kids involved and all loose ends are tied. The side characters stories are good (so definitely read till the very end). The ending is totally my type of ending where the author fasts forward to the future where the children grows up and runs though what happens as the years pass. The translation is superb too!

To counter some of the bad reviews:

Some may feel that certain actions taken by the characters are childish or unreasonable but personally I feel that these actions stem from a justifiable place. They are still growing as people and though they have lived two lifetimes, they were ignorant and ‘sheltered’ in the past. The author also properly explains why certain actions were taken in the story and in the author’s notes. The author’s notes contains tons of spoilers but the translator does give a warning so beware.

A bonus is that some of the characters you meet here will have their own stories *hint Wan Wan, fatty Luo and barbarian Yan* to satisfy your cravings. <<less
