My All time favourite BL novels

The very best of the best (in my opinion).

These are all ones I heavily enjoyed and when they were updating I would check every day for updates, plot wise would also be good and not just because it fits my favourite tropes. No particular order.

So far the list is pretty empty because I have high standards when it comes to choosing my 'favourites.'

Here me out: despite the mediocre and cliche concept, the unnecessary cannon fodder and the misunderstandings, the context surrounding why all this has happened (explained in the extras, and what made it a tragedy) made me feel like this deserved its place on this list. My reasons are:

1. MC's character and antagonists

I absolutely adored the MC and his interactions with other people despite his seemingly Gary Sue behaviours (which are explained with the extra setting anyways), because it provided these cliched antagonists an opportunity for redemption, not often seen in other novels in this genre. Not just one character either, cannon fodder, rivals in love, etc - these characters weren't ruined for life just because they went against the protagonists once, and I loved this novel because of that. Only those that didn't reflect were given the face slap, but these one's were people who committed literal crimes so it was deserved. It's fresh to see antagonised children (like rich pretentious ones) have the opportunity for growth, rather than letting their childish wilfulness impact the rest of their lives. Reminds me of silent voice in this sense.

Another thing I love about the MC is that his trauma regarding his previous life didn't just disappear, it was a relevant plot line, and it took him time to resolve with the help of his family.

2. The extras

I have a love-hate relationship with these two extras. On the one hand, they gave substance to this novel and ended almost all the loop-holes, such as plot cliches, personality settings (especially with the MC), why the ML is referred to as the protagonist, and why there's so little mishap regarding the ML's success in the business world. It also explains why MC never talked to ML about his 'previous life.' On the other hand, it made me miserable.

3. The ML (SPOILER WARNING)

Very rarely do I see the overbearing CEO trope that respects the MC and doesn't force his opinions at all. Although the ML does express his dislike and jealousy, he never restricts the MC and is extremely patient. He can act wilful and there's still a lot of misunderstandings, but I wonder if they are really misunderstandings or ML's regret and guilty consciousness projecting into the program. Since the MC's thinking was programmed by him, it makes sense that ML intentionally made his redemption harder for himself as a means to grieve. Perhaps this was his way of apologising, because he felt like he didn't deserve MC despite his wish to be with him, thereby prolonging their relationships development. This also explains why he was so patient and forgiving even when he was hurt. <<less
