娘子万安: 4.5/5 stars. I listened to the audiobook and it was quite enjoyable. It's a historical mystery novel, where the original FL was killed by her fiance's family. She's reborn into another girl with a loving family and unravels multiple conspiracies. I listened to about 80% of it (slept through some of the end on car rides), but it was definitely a fun listen!

This novel helped me procrastinate my thesis and kept me up all night. It's a good Xianxia novel, with a time traveller main character that acts as if he does indeed have 500 years of experience (which at this point, has become a running joke in the fandom). He has his own morals and is unfazed when setbacks occur, which is a breath of fresh air considering the way that other novels have time traveling main characters that also seem to regress age-wise when traveling back in time.

The reason that this is "only" 4 stars is because:

1. I can see the writing getting repetitive, and it's not actually *that* good. The dialogue is quite direct, and the main character does consistently seem to find whatever he needs when the time calls for it. (This is not to say that the main character doesn't work hard -- he does, but he also has a lot of plot armor, which is fine and mostly to be expected with this kind of novel. It's just that because there always seems to be a new problem with him, it feels like most of the time he solves them with ass pulls).

2. The fandom is annoying. (Perhaps an unjustified reason to give this a lower score, but my score, my rules). Sure, RI is a novel that philosophizes about rules, etc., but it’s never that deep. Fang Yuan, the main character, is someone who doesn’t care about anyone else and prioritizes his own goals (strength and immortality) above all. As such, he frequently breaks past the rules that society (both RI and ours) sets for him in order to achieve his goals. Some of the audience takes it too far. His values and his thoughts on life are not necessarily ones that a reader should adopt right away, nor is there anything wrong with being attached to the people around you or being interested in wealth. It’s in this weird intersection of being an interesting novel, but also attracting a large incel fanbase. The fans tend to then look at other novels, such as LOTM, and complain about how the LOTM main character has ties to other people in the universe, and is a "good" person. <<less
