He's incredibly focused at it, and he doesn't want to be held back by the moral conventions of the "correct path", emotion, etc., hence his decision to travel the Devil Path (he's incredibly similar to the MC from Warlock of the Magus World, but less psychopathic; he doesn't get a kick twisting people to his will, he's all business). This series is a very very good one, but any new reader really should not pay attention to the enthusiastic hype surrounding it, because most of the hype is because of the second arc of the series. You should not be reading the beginning section of the novel expecting amazing plot, or thrilling scenes or anything like that because that’s not what the first arc is. The first arc of this light novel is very much a non-serious/not plot heavy slice of life. It’s just reading the funny random ramblings of a mentally questionable re-incarnated spider in a dark and scary labyrinth. Its very fun to read with a light attitude and makes you gradually... more>> grow more fond towards the main character. Lot’s of foreshowing is dropped, but it doesn’t really make you pay attention to it for a while.

The second arc is where most of the hype is coming from. It suddenly gets much more interesting and plot heavy, and never really stops getting interesting. It just grows and grows until its one of the most unique things you will really read from a light novel with tons of things all going on at the same time.

So, if you’re picking this up because everyone is telling you that its great, just know what you’re getting into. Don’t go in with pre-conceptions, or the beginning will bore you. Just read it the same way that everyone else did when we got taken in by it. 

Enjoy a light hearted, witty, and nonsensical journey of a spider and don’t expect anything else from it until it takes you by surprise.

As such, please ignore anyone who writes a review before they have finished volume 1 which has 213 chapters. They know not what they're talking about! This is an amazing story. It has a completely different world and concept from most other LNs. As such, there are very few tropes in this LN (such a refreshing thing ?).

Like I said, the novel has a very slow start. On top of that, there's a lot of explanation going on for most of volume 1, about what beyonders are, how one advances and the different abilities available in the different paths at different sequences. On top of that, there's the mystery surrounding the MC and the grey fog, and then you have the churches and the gods. Not forgetting the Fallen Creator.

This is one of my all time favourite novels, together with Reverend Insanity. I highly highly recommend it.

The story is written in arcs, during which we follow amy trying and struggling to find her place in the world, during her exploration she will meet different people, animals and mysterious beings, who will have different influence and interaction with her, showing us how she change during the series, while some of them return later in the series, and how her being a "child of calamity " influence this interaction.

Emy was born with black hair and black eyes, symbols of the "child of calamity". The "children of calamity" are people known to bring bad luck, in the worst example given it was said their presence alone can represent the End of a state or a kingdom. This kind of reputation make them extremely hated by others, including their own families, and make them much less likely to survive and grow.

Emy, as expected from a "child of calamity " also have an extremely hard time growing up, living most of her early childhood in an environment where rather than not getting acknowledged got accused of every bad thing happening around her without any reason other than her looks.

It is also important to know that emy also has a paralyze in her face muscles, making it so that she can't make different facial expressions, always keeping an expressionless face, making it so nobody actually able to understand what she is thinking adding to the fear and mysteriousness people feel about her.

During the different arcs of the story we see different goals emy is trying to achieve and how she grow and evolve with each goal she conquer as a person and as a human being

The world building is incredible, the aesthetics are awesome, and the stories are poignant, with humor masterfully interspersed. What sticks out to me the most is how much love the author has for the characters. The Undertaker always sees the best side of his compatriots, always treating them with compassion and respect, even when he's on vacation. This book is not only funny and beautiful, it's a paragon of how to live life. Coupled with great translation, this and Sinnoa's other book are among the first I'd recommend to anyone.... more>>

This story starts off with a clichéd beginning of his death, a hit and run accident. He spends ten days (if I remember correctly) as a ghost waiting for a reaper to appear and collect him. But much to his dismay no one appeared; leaving him to deal with matters into his own hand. Once he finally made contact with the reapers it appears that his 'birth' in our world had been a 'mistake'. The MC then finds out that his real form was a Spirit King that rules over water; not a human. The years spent in the human world left his intended world to suffer because the new Spirit King hadn't been born-... more>> the reapers were also equally confused as to why the new king hadn't reincarnated but now they found the reason.

The reapers prepare him for his new life as the Spirit King by giving him a draught to wipe his memories of his previous life. But being a powerful Spirit King that that ruled over water- the potion didn't work. He then reincarnates back to his original body but with his human memories. All is well as you may think, but a superior being with memories as a human isn't going to work out as well. This is a story is a journey of him letting go of his human self and accepting his new role as a King of spirits. <<less

1) the level of realism - this isn't a vague fantasy genre meshed into the form of an MMO, these are real people playing a game, and the blend of RL and game life, the player interactions, World Chat, etc. really bring out the flavor of watching an MMO.

2) The insane level of detail - this author is amazing. No other story has this much focus on the reality of pro gaming, which includes physical skill, game knowledge, the ability to strategize and use that knowledge to their fullest advantage... Either the author himself used to be a pro gamer or he has top tier researching skills, but as a casual MMO player I recognize that even imagining these situations goes way above my grade. Recognizing an actual skill gap between myself and the MC - and not just "the MC picked up some magic stuff and became amazing through vaguely described training" - stirs up a ton of admiration not only for the characters but for the author as well.

3) The amazing, lively characters. All of them have enormous personalities. There are a ton of side characters that are hilarious or awesome and that I want to see more of because I know they'll be fun to read about. This is the opposite of most LNs who have disposable, flat, just-there-to-be-puppet side characters, or LNs who have side characters with tons of potential but are never developed (CD, I love ya but you toss out amazing side characters like tissues...) My favorite part of having all these great characters is the banter and the tr*sh talk, especially in the later chapters when the big fish come out. Even the annoying characters have their charm...

4) Finally, it has to be said that the MC himself is pretty great. He's definitely more mature and interesting than most protagonists I've read about. It's a bit hard to describe him, but the way he deals with Sleeping Moon in the early chapters is one of the greatest marks of his personality. If the character were more immature he'd be focused on getting revenge and "saving face"; if the character were colder he'd just ignore everything and go solo lone wolf. But Ye Xiu? He's self-assured, but not arrogant - forgiving because he's there's no point in getting riled - but canny enough to calmly wring out advantages for himself even in seemingly bad situations. The main point is that things don't just fall in Ye Xiu's lap, he works for it and makes things happen the way he wants through experience, knowledge, or just plain old haggling. Of course, the universe doesn't revolve around his decisions, so it's always fun to read about how he has to tunnel his way through the ever-growing mess he's accidentally created for himself.

If you enjoy the concept of MMOs, gaming, and/or esports, I definitely recommend this!

This novel plot is like a messy ball of yarn, and we as readers only can make out some bits and pieces. Even after hundreds of chapters, it feels that I've only just scratched the surface. Moreover, many of the seemingly minor characters will play big roles near the climax of the story. They do not get discarded after their initial debut; and even if these people don't make frequent appearances, they all have their own, significant roles.

About MC's 'wife': She's not real, YNA is actually just a fake person in which our MC hypnotized himself to believe existed. It gets explained later in the novel--- he had done this because he needed a reason to keep himself constantly motivated, constantly reminding himself that he needed to escape. And someone had told him that there were people who would do anything in the name of love.

Regardless, there is no romantic interest in this novel. There are fans who ship certain characters, but none are cannon.
