LoTM is set in a world that resembles our own Victorian Era. We follow Klein Moretti, formally known as Zhou Mingrui as he slowly unravels the smog-like veil of mysteries surrounding both himself and the world.

The first thing this story does greatly and differently off the bat is hooking you with intrigue and mystery from chapter one. Before you even understand what type of person the protagonist is, you are thrown into the mystery. You don't need a massive exposition about the protagonist or the new world he has found himself in, just a rather eerie mystery off the bat that instantly hooks you without any bait.

The next thing that this story does differently is the atmosphere. The tone and atmosphere is rather dark and gritty as you would expect from a gothic, Lovecraftian-like story, yet charming and ambient as one would expect from a baroque Victorian setting. The setting is gritty, yes, and its described in great detail. The detail that the story goes into with descriptions isn't just one-dimensional either, the sights, sounds and smells, little details noticed about the people surrounding him, it makes you feel like you have been transported in a bustling Victorian City.

And this is only describing the greatness of the first few chapters. During that period, we get a brief-look at Klein Moretti, he is not an in-your-face great character who instantly draws you in, but as the reader, we feel comforted with his piloting the ship with his kind and gentle, amicable personality, as well as his quippy remarks. This is something that develops during the story, but Klein is a truly great character, and the more you read, the deeper his character becomes, with developing internal and external crisis's

Beyond Klein, the supporting characters are also great. Let's look at his immediate family, Melissa and Benson. They are not just Klein's Brother and Klein's Sister, they are their own living, breathing people with their own thoughts, feelings, lives, goals, motivations and personalities. The events of the story define their paths going forward. Though it sounds rather obvious, it is incredibly hard to make such realistic characters in a story, but Lord Cuttlefish is simply built different.

Beyond his extended family, there is no shortage of amazing characters. Look no further than the Tarot Club. Audrey is such an joy to read. Such an adorable yet epic character. I always looked forward to her greeting every time Klein began the Tarot Meeting, its amazing how a fictional character can make you feel so comforted. All the members of the Tarot Gathering are great. Though I felt I preferred the earlier members to the late, the addition of a Tarot member was always an excitement.

And beyond the Tarot Gathering, there is also the Nighthawks. Like a small family, each of the members had their own dynamics, histories and personalities. The events that followed after their initial meeting developed every single one of them, and the longer the story went, the more they matured, like fine wine.

But speaking of the previously mentioned Tarot Club, this is probably my favourite part of the story. Though every single Arc of LoTM is great, I found myself constantly looking forward to the next meeting of the Tarot Gathering, the exchange of knowledge, the mystique, the whole vibe, its great. Watching Klein flex his newly gathered knowledge and earn the awe and excitement of the members will never not be great. The story even goes as far as to include their perspectives, making it feel like they are really growing alongside Klein.

The most exciting part of the story is when Klein discovers new lore. And lore, this story has it in droves. It is amazing that the author can build up so many different parts and mechanics to the story, so many different factions that coexist in this living breathing world perfectly. This world is so rich with history, and I found myself constantly dying with excitement, looking forward to the next diary entry or realm exploration to drop some more lore of the world.

Back to characters for a moment, the villains in this story are simply amazing. Villains in web novels usually make me feel disappointed, but from better novels, I feel excitement or awe. The villains in LoTM are completely different however, they make me feel horror, and fear for Klein and his friends. There is no real plot armour in LoTM, characters are incredibly vulnerable, which makes the horrifying villains all the more frightening. This story will give you a phobia of monocles, and that is saying something.

The World Building is just insane that it makes me wonder why this is just a Web Novel and not a best seller on Amazon Kindle. So many factions and organizations, so many different Gods, Churches and Pantheons, so many Evil Organizations, Territories, Kingdoms, all co-existing perfectly, Every faction introduced to the story has its own ideologies and philosophies. They are not just thrown in to pad out the world, they are essential organs that make up the body of this world. One of my other favourite part in this story is when Klein just summons a bunch of higher-ups from each faction and causes chaos by letting them duke it out and running away.

I have already written so much but I am yet to even scratch the surface on this story's greatness. Lets talk about the power system for a moment. Beyonders. Beyonder Potions. Its simply genius. The author most likely had an idea of introducing a secret organization, but as an author, what is the point in this organization? An exchange of information is a great idea. But apart from the world history, what can they actually exchange? This is what makes the Tarot Gathering so genius. Each pathway as they call it has their own recipe for potions needed to excel in their own pathway, but each pathway is shrouded in so much mystery, this is what makes it especially exciting when they pull out their shopping list of all the eldritch ingredients they need for their next potion and exchange them with one another. It will never not be hype when Mr. Fool silences the crowd by bringing out some bigshot shopping list. Each pathway is connected to the very intrinsic make-up of the world, with each subsequent rank containing subsequent powers unique to that pathway. The strategies and battle are like Naruto but on a completely different level.

And there is no shortage of epic moments in this series. So many times I am just left in awe, filled with hype. Whenever Klein takes a peek at the true body of a God or uses his paper angels. Just hearing the words 'Don't look directly at God' gives me indescribable chills. This novel is just really something else. Utter insanity.

Still, like with all my comments on these novels, I do need to mention some bad parts. The only issue is, with this novel, bad parts are so hard to find. I am thinking of more and more good things I forgot to mention, but bad things are almost alien. I know some people where unhappy with the lack of romantic development between Klein and Audrey, but at the same time, I know there is a massive faction who hates romance so can that even be considered bad?

Another slight issue is that though there are 22 Major Arcana, the full member list is like half that. In short, my only real gripe with this novel is that its not 10,000 chapters. This story is an absolute masterpiece. You must read this.

This paraphrased quote perfectly sums up the entire vibe of My House of Horrors, one of the greatest reading experiences I ever had. I know there is a lot of individuals who claim that books cannot scare them, but I unfortunately, am a coward, this is book absolutely scared me to death, making me frightened to sleep in the dark at night.

My House of Horrors follows the protagonist, Chen Ge. Chen Ge is the young-boss proprietor of a failing Haunted House. He was previously studying toy-making, but after the unfortunate disappearance of his parents, he inherited the Haunted House. However, his Haunted House is dying. Thankfully however, he discovers a mysterious phone that changes things forever.

The first thing you have to understand about this story is that the Author Planned the ending from chapter one. The amount of foreshadowing in this story is absolutely insane. I am an amateur author, and I have to bow my head in utter awe at I Fix Air Conditioners Ability to foreshadow.

Right off the bat we are thrown into horrific situations where Chen Ge is persuaded by his phone to enact skin-crawling challenges that will keep you up at night. Playing around with mirrors in the middle of the night, I felt my hairs stand on end.

The horror in this story is rather brilliantly done. It uses a mix of urban legends with more contemporary ideas and horror to create a perfect blend of spooky. My favourite thing about the horror in this story is that for the most part, the humans are far more terrifying than the monsters.

Another terrifying individual is Chen Ge, our protagonist. It takes a special type of protagonist to chase around Serial Killers with a Hammer in an abandoned asylum in the middle of the night whilst live-streaming. To put it simply, Chen Ge is built different. He is absolutely insane. The amount of times my fear and trepidation was broken by pure bursts of laughter because of his antics. Perhaps that detracts from the horror aspect, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The inclusion of the Haunted House is another thing that makes this story wonderful. The horror aspects and the plot are quite dark and heavy, so including the haunted house as a break and breather in between plots was nothing short of genius. I found myself looking forward to the haunted house visits after the story more than the actual plots themselves.

As I mentioned, the foreshadowing is great. Throughout the story, Chen Ge visits a variety of different horrific places worthy of being called nightmare fuel, but the thing that makes this stand out from the works of an an average joe like myself is that every single location is carefully picked and foreshadowed leading to an even greater mystery down the line. The entire story is like one large interconnected web.

I have to say that the Comedy and the Horror are without a doubt my favourite parts of the story. I never used to read horror and mystery before this story but now I find myself searching for more.

However, compared to Lord of the Mysteries, the issues with this story are far more glaring. Lets talk about the characters. Chen Ge is great, he really is. He is a truly memorable and enjoyable protagonists. Arguably the best protagonist this story could possible have... but the supporting characters? Many times when I was reading this story I found myself really looking forward to conversations between Chen Ge and his staff, only to be blown off by him ignoring them and going to sleep.

At the beginning of the story, I really enjoyed the character of Xu Wan and was greatly looking forward to her development throughout the story, yet, by the end of the story, she is relegated to less than a side character. I am not sure she even gets a mention in the final chapter. It is safe to say that Chen Ge cares far more for his ghostly compatriots than his human compatriots.

Actually, I think the villains are actually better written than the side characters. With the villains, I could perfectly understand their goals, motivations, and what led them to this point. I found myself looking forward and getting excited to see them again in the future, and some of them had me in the edge of my seat. But for the supporting cast around Chen Ge, they felt like just that, a supporting cast.

The idea to make Zhang Ya as the final heroine is okay I think. Their romance was definitely developed, I won't deny that, but it undeniably left me feeling bitter as I had my expectations for Xu Wan from chapter 1, but romance is such a minor aspect for this story it doesn't really matter.

Another thing that had left me bitter is I feel like this story had so, so much more potential. The entire story takes place within the same city, but there is so, so much opportunity and potential to further expand the story. The idea of the entire story connecting is great, yes, but I also feel it limits what this novel could be. Why make the limit 5* Demon Gods? Why not take it even further, include some Lovecraftian or truly Demonic Elements?

This story is great. Truly great. Its a brilliant story that I would recommend to anyone. What leaves me bitter however, is the fact I know this story could be so much more. Perhaps even on the same level as LoTM. What is a great Horrific Comedy easily had the potential to be a masterpiece, and I wish it was.

However, for the sheer enjoyment and frights this story gave me, I will rank it SSS nonetheless.

I knew I would love this novel the moment I read the first chapter. It's a cold and rainy night, you are a lonely traveller, a wanderer looking for somewhere to rest and warm up. Amidst the smog-filled, damp cobbled-stone streets, you chance upon a lone, dimly lit antique book-store. Pushing open the rickety old door, you are greeted by the chime of the bronze bell and the smell of old books. The polite and respectable owner smiles at you and says, "Welcome. I have been expecting your arrival." and offers you a warm towel and a nice warm cup of tea, and thus, you feel comfort from the bottom of your heart.

This is exactly how this novel makes me feel and that vibe was captured from the very get-go. If you are a lover of the Bloodborne, Lovecraftian, Victorian and Steampunk setting, you should at least give this novel a shot.

There are two main reasons people seem to dislike this book. First of all, Lin Jie is someone who describes himself as a great interpreter of human relations and psychological interpretation, he is supposed to know every trick in the book, and can offer psychological guidance whilst making a sale at the same time. Many are quick to point out that his psychological tricks aren't actually that great and what the author makes out to be genius is relatively simple. Unfortunately for you, however. I am incredibly s*upid! I have never read psychological books, I don't know the first thing about mental tricks, scams, cons and schemes, and I was just enjoying the ride, I loved how he dissected his customers to create beautiful misunderstandings.

That brings us to the second part of this story that people seem to hate, the misunderstandings. People either A. Hate that the main character because he thinks he is weak whilst being incredibly strong or B. Think it breaks immersion how naïve the main character is and how he does mental gymnastics to process supernatural situations. However, I have the same answer for both these issues. It is an Eldritch, Lovecraftian novel. We are clearly introduced to some sort of evil god entity resembling Azathoth that is clearly capable of manipulating people. Though I am not sure what happens towards the end of the story as I only read up to chapter 350 or so, I think the fact that our very own main character could be being manipulated makes the story all-the-more tense.

With that out the way, lets talk about what I love about the story. First off, the setting. The author was obviously incredibly inspired by Bloodborne, or perhaps he was inspired by Lovecraft which Bloodborne is inspired by because he went all out with the Hunters and Trick weapons aesthetic which I am simply down for. Naturally, he added his own spin on things, the smog-filled city is filled with rain, they have technology such as televisions, elevators and computers, this doesn't detract from the setting however, instead making it more immersive.

There are a multitude of different factions in the world. and though I don't believe they even scratch the surface of what Lord of the Mysteries accomplished from its factions, they are at least relatively interesting and expand the universe

With the setting out of the way, lets talk about the characters. Lin Jie is really great. One of my favourite main characters. If I was to give Bai Xiaochun and Wang Lin a 10/10, Klein a 9.5, Chen Ge a 9/10, Lin Jie would probably be a 8.5 or an 8.75, it is amazing how one man can be so kind and innocent yet so incredibly malevolent and evil the same time. This main character really touched me with his genuine kindness and concern for each of his individual customers, he really did want the best for them, as well as sales. Funnily enough, in this eldritch monstrosity, I would award the tag 'Heart-Warming' for the protagonist alone.

The side characters are all incredibly great. The masked fellow Wiles or Wily is especially great and was the source of much of the comedy. The young Huntress leading the organization isn't what I would call a great character but she served her purpose and was likeable, Joseph was incredibly funny and made for great antics, and his staff were all enjoyable.

There is one particular side character I would like to highlight, however. Compared to anime, where a single heroine can make a show rocket in popularity to become a trend, I would say the heroines in Xianxia and Xuanhuan are especially weak, so much so that I often find myself falling in love with the male leads more, and I am straight. There is a trinity of heroines that stand head and shoulders above all in my personal opinion, in no particular order, Ames from the Legendary Mechanic, Audrey from LoTM and King's Avatar's Su Mucheng. However, this story offers a heroine that surpasses even that - Silver. I have written a lot of failed novels since I read this story, and at least 20% of my heroines had some inspiration from Silver. She didn't have much screen time, she doesn't even have much dialogue, but her introductory chapter resonated with me really deeply. She is great and one of my favourite aspects of the story.

Not my favourite part of the story however, that would be the comedy. The comedy in this novel is really, really hilarious. Perhaps its not everyone's cup of tea, misunderstandings seem to be fairly hit or miss after all, but this story really had me howling with laughter. There was one-seen where the Lin Jie offered the masked Old Man Wily or Wiles a book on preparing sacrifices, a book that Lin Jie had written, preparing chickens or whatnot. Naturally, it was changed into a book about Human Sacrifice, and Lin Jie was giving the Old Man guidance on his butchering from another room.

This is another thing I especially love about Lin Jie, he is essentially the devils advocate. He helps those from the lawful alignment such as Joseph, and he also helps people on the Evil alignment such as Wiles, he also helps those on the neutral alignment like the Huntress girl, he is just an all-round good guy who ends up creating even more chaos by helping the wrong people.

Lets talk about the Lovecraftian aspects more. This actually seems to be more prevalent in the Manhua. In the Manhua, Lin Jie has these papers people need to sign when borrowing a book, and the logo on them says 'Blind Idiot' naturally hinting to Azathoth, when Joseph comes in and receives the Lullaby, it has the text for 'Demon Sultan Azathoth', however, when I reread the novel, I noticed none of these aspects were prevalent. Though it clearly has Lovecraftian tones and themes. I wouldn't say that the Novel features any actual beings from Lovecraftian lore.

None of that is necessarily important to the story however, which I absolutely loved. It is definitely not the perfect story however, for example, I felt it did start to derail towards where I got up to, it felt more like the villains were just cannon fodder for the main character instead of being actually interesting villains. Though I understand the ideal in having an overpowered protagonist destroy all the villains, I feel it would be better if the villains had more development and build-up like in One Punch Man.

Overall, I absolutely adore this story. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy misunderstandings like 'Overlord' and 'To be a Power in the Shadows', but for those who didn't like those two novels / anime, I advise caution when reading this, its not for everyone.

TLM follows the Protagonist Han Xiao, otherwise known as Black Star, a former Booster of a massive MMORPG game known as galaxy. Though he wasn't the number one player or anything of the like, he was still an experienced guy who knew what he was doing.

Unfortunately for him, or perhaps fortunately for him, he ended up transmigrating into the game a few years before the game starts. You transmigrated into your favourite game, sounds like a dream, right? Unfortunately, my favourite games are Elden Ring and Bloodborne so I am screwed either way. Han Xiao doesn't have it easy either, for he knows about the massive cataclysmic events in the future that could spell his doom. Gamers may be Immortal, but he isn't.

Thus, he does what gamers does best, grind and level up. Starting on a Planet that resembles Earth, Planet Aquamarine I believe, he starts out as a small time individual, learning harsh lessons from the very beginning, undertaking his immediate goal of taking down the massive evil organization hunting him down.

I must say, this novel really is fantastic, I knew within the first ten chapters or so that I was going to love this novel. Lets start with the characters first, Han Xiao is great. He isn't completely ruthless, but he definitely isn't a pushover either, a nice balance between good guy and plain evil. I never once disliked following him as our protagonist, though I wish he interacted with the gamers a bit more.

The gamers themselves are one of my favourite aspects of the story, they are incredibly hilarious. Watching their different perspectives and antics will never not be funny to me, as well as how the natives react to these crazy immortal lunatics.

The supporting cast is one of the strongest aspects of the story, I liked every character introduced, at least the ones I can remember. Hilda was an especially good addition, though she seems a bit cold, stiff and bland, I really enjoyed her whole arc with her Sister, and she gives me major Malenia vibes. My favourite side character is probably Ames. It was really enjoyable whenever she was on screen, I really enjoyed watching her bulldoze planets with another planet, and her romance with Han Xiao was actually somewhat developed if I dare to say that about a Chinese Web Novel. Though a runner up for favourite supporting character is EsGod, though I feel like his character was butchered towards the end, when he was first introduced, he gave me major eldritch vibes and I was all for it.

Continuing with the characters of the story, the Villains were all incredibly good before the end. The final villains I can hardly even remember but everything leading up to that was solid. All the villains had their own motivations and personalities, not to a crazy degree, but It was at least entertaining and not tiring whenever they had screen time. The whole idea of space-politics and morality was also quite well-done. Though not on the same level as 'Legend of the Galactic Heroes', I enjoyed watching the different societies and stuff interact.

My favourite thing about this novel would have to be the whole adventure and the vibe however. It was quite punk-like really, and I really felt like I was strapped into a space epic. The galaxy itself felt incredibly vast, like an actual universe, and I felt like I was personally adventuring with the Black Star mercenary group.

Like with all novels however, it isn't perfect. I really lost interest towards the last 10% or so, at that point, I was just reading to see it through to the end. The final chapter was definitely interesting, but I really just lost interest by the time Han Xiao started to revive all the ancient warriors.

But as I said, I still think about this novel a lot. Whenever I listen to the music I listen to when reading this novel I always smile. It's a good read, and If you haven't read it already, you should give it a shot.

  Thank you so much for your kind comment, I am glad you enjoyed my review! I really need to do more but they are quite time consuming. Have you read 'My House of Horrors' and 'The Legendary Mechanic'? though they are not quite on the same level as LoTM I highly recommend them if you are ever looking for something to read. >.>
