i did not regret picking up this to read. i was so worried about seeing all the hype and praise on danmeitwt would make the... more>> experience underwhelming as a result, but honestly? it deserves the praise. i absolutely adored watching yu fan slowly fall in love with chen jingshen without ever realizing it himself, to seeing their relationship essentially stay the same even after dating. and of course the bittersweet angst that came in the second half of the novel. i also loved chen jingshen's unconditional love for yu fan throughout the novel as well, he didn't pressure yu fan to date him, but still made his presence in his life known, and that in turn let yu fan know, he had someone he can love and be loved by. <<less

much like PDL's other novels, i came into this blind, minus a few things i was told before hand. PDL definitely has a theme running through her novels ive read so far, which seems to be two women navigating a very patriarchal/misogynistic society, with one of them pretending to be a man for safety or goal oriented reasons. matrilocal marriage tackles this topic much more overtly than clear and muddy loss of love did, with the way the female lead; lin buxian is not only a woman born in the yan kingdom, but also it's only female merchant (a profession exclusive to men).... more>>

this is also much more of a slow burn romance between an openly lesbian main character; yun an, and lin buxian who deals with the intenal struggles of being a woman, and how she may love women as well (in my opinion she seemed to be closeted in the early part of the story but had no resources to explain her feelings about marriage to a man). so if you liked the themes in PDL's other works, you'll enjoy this one too. <<less

Changgu as individuals and as a couple were so interesting and heartbreaking at the same time. so much happened in their separate lives that culminated in not only the two of them finding love and family in each other, but also an equal partner. chang geng alone became a standout for his story and how he was fighting against every obstacle; including himself in order to change the world for the better. to have a world where not only gu yun can finally settle down after decades of fighting for the world that dehumanizes him, but also a world that chang geng himself can finally live in after never feeling like he was part of it, that the world did nothing for him. i encourage anyone who sees this to give stars of chaos a try at least once. <<less
