Takes the original Little Mermaid story and gives it a unique (and perhaps dark?) twist. Coupled with the excellent use of imagery, the translator does an amazing job at conveying the raw emotions that each character feels to the point that they ascend the standards we expect of a 2D character. Instead of feeling the tension you can see it. You aren’t the ML but you can very well feel what he’s feeling and understand the turmoil he is put through as a result of what occurs. ... more>>

You can tell both the author and translator have done their homework. This isn’t one of those stories where the author knows nothing about the MC’s occupation and consequently can only produce a generic story. Unlike such novels, you learn a lot while following our pirate MC. For example, you’ll find that the author often references naval battle tactics and ship jargon. ... more>>

Aside from that, another thing that adds a lot of character to the story is the author’s exploration into different societal issues. More specifically, I was particularly interested in following the MC’s journey as she struggles against social norms, gender roles and stereotypes as a lady living in a relatively conservative era. But despite the scrutiny of others, her sense of justice remains firm as she speaks out on difficult to talk about topics such as torture. (One of my favourite discussions- see chap 65) 

I will, however, say that this novel really challenged my patience. While I wouldn’t classify one of the characters as a yandere, he is a fking enormous red flag that continued to piss me tf off (NOT the ML thankfully)  <<less
