This series is a mixed bag but overall a good read.

First of all, I was very evasive of this series due to it’s premise. As is justified, the author didn’t put enough gravity on it initially. I think you can tell they were catching their baring. 

Shuri is a weak protagonist. But she isn’t a bad one persay. It’s unfortunate to say but she becomes very passive character as the plot progresses. She feels less like an active character and more like a plot device. But I’m starting to think that’s the point. It’s a literal manifestation of what the events of the plot have done for this character. The psychological tag would be more effective in that sense.

This is one of the very few stories where the main character doesn’t feel like a character.

The villain is amazing. I adore him and think he’s incredibly well written. He genuinely feels like he supersedes the narrative and has a perspective of the plot from the reader’s point of view without it feeling like he didn’t have the tools to make it that way. I like his intelligence and so much could be done with that style of character. I’d like to write a story with a character as dark grey as he is mid story. He could be a twist ml with some narrative tweaks with how likeable he can be.

This story can be very good. 

It is fantastic in its representation of serious topics and giving male characters (and some female ones) depth but ineffective in its treatment of the protagonist at times. It made me understand a misogynist ffs give it a try.

TLDR:

“Hot” evil priest. Mommy and daddy issues galore. Boring* main character. 

I’d recommend getting to the time skip as quickly as possible. The character development gets much better at that point and depth gets explored.

God I love every character. It’s so satisfying to see harem and sh**ty romance novel tropes get torn to pieces with a sprinkle of feminist subtext and found family. Unironically think this would have been more suited as a no romance action Xianxia then shouai. I think the romance was lacking in some aspects but I’m not unconvinced. I prefer less focus on the romance and more on character development which this story has plenty of.... more>>
