ASDXFX the jokes people, them jokes I tell ya :'D Every other chapter I find myself in stitches, wheezing. But... don't be fooled by all that -hahahehe- this story also has knives hidden well. So far, I feel this will end up being one of my favorite danmeis ever. When it's fun, it's immensely fun but when it's sad, it's heart breakingly sad. It's just that..translation is most likely MTL edit and I'd sell my kidney for a decent one! The amount of jokes missed and the amount of info wrongly translated hurts my soul. <<less

This novel feels like Guardian's (Zhen Hun) brother. While the Guardian is the eloquent, studious and hopelessly romantic older one, Lie Huo is absolutely the chaotic, hot-headed and even more hopelessly romantic younger of the pair. The more I read, the more I marvel at its intricate details. At first, it shows you a nonchalant smirk and cracks jokes, but as time passes, that extrovert's mask slowly falls to reveal the lonely, broken soul beneath, that's learned to laugh through its pain. <<less

Tier: A-  / The humor.. the fluff.. theee rohhmanceeee hngggh...IT.IS.PERFECT!

Tier: B+  /  I’m referring this novel as "The Cultivation Novel", heavy on the Dao, with only a few scattered romance scenes and the slowest slow burn ever. It does get a bit boring after 300+ chapters of dryness, but those long-awaited romance scenes still manage to keep you intrigued. ... more>>

As for the negative side, after finally reading that much-anticipated "papapa/romance/please.do.something.already" scene...ugh... it was the most lackluster and insipid passion scene ever :') Another downside is that the translator only updates a few chapters a month, so with the story being over 800 chapters, it progresses painfully slowly. There’s a lot of knowledge dumping and unnecessary scenes. My main issue, though, is with the MC. I do appreciate how perfectly his temperament aligns with his wood-element root and the Dao theme, but combining a completely zen MC with an icewall ML, and then layering it on top of the book's slow pace... yeah, it gets boring quickly. <<less

Tier: B+  /  HIDDEN GEM ALERT!!! I'm dying while waiting for new chapter updates... I wasn't expecting getting hooked up to this level. MC and... more>> ML's subtle character transformation and all the nuances are so f*cking good! Most importantly, I think author managed to describe and show female rage so f*cking well. I generally shut my mind while reading most of danmei due to casual and internalized sexism; so finding a story that is near to my own viewpoint with its descriptions an narrative is so refreshing and fulfilling.  <<less

Tier: A-  /  First of all, shixiong-shidi romance is one of my weaknesses, and with over 400 chapters, this story gets bonus points from me... more>> just for that. Beyond that, all the characters introduced so far, their personalities, and the progression of the plot have been incredibly enjoyable! I truly admire this aspect of the novel; all the characters the MC encounters—every single one of them—are so original, unique, and well-written. And ooh, It has the BEST demonic venerables ever ! Seriously, I might start a fanclub for them, venerable-comedic-relief power and fan-girling potential is strong with this one :D <<less

Unholymotherofcthulhu, it’s been ages since I stumbled upon something this good! I’m losing my mind while reading it—I’m not joking. I’ve already accumulated at least a paragraph-long list of praises to lavish on it, and yet it’s still not enough! How come this novel hasn’t broken charts, doesn’t have its own fan army, and isn’t well known is a total mystery to me!!! <<less

It doesn't have the usual feel of a novel; rather, it reads more like someone is... more>> simply reciting a story without much emotion (like those youtube comment stories). I can't connect with any of the characters or get into the setting. Seriously I'm this close to drop it... Yet, I have to admit, the level of spoil and doting coming from the shou is immaculate. <<less

Tier: A--/ B++ /  After "So What If You’ve Been Reborn?" and this novel, the author has become one of my favorites. Her humor is subtle but enjoyable, the worldbuilding is PHENOMENAL, the plot is AMAZING, the side characters are GREAT, and the main duo NEVER disappoints; and the fact that it has over 300 chapters—MWAH *chefskiss*—only adds to my delight!  The events and situations the main duo encounters, along with the questions that arise from them, really gives you something to think about. The novel handles those philosophical questions in a natural, relatable manner; just like how any of us would respond when first faced with them. I'm truly impressed by the author's talent... more>> in this regard; story pushes you to think, yet it does so in such a subtle way without ever breaking the immersion. That’s absolutely praiseworthy, kudos to her!

Now that the praises are out of the way, let me address the negatives. I love long novels, and finding a story with over 200 chapters that is still engaging makes me immensely happy. However, with longer chapters often comes the downside of excessive knowledge dumps, filler content, overly stretched scenes, and a stagnation of the plot that's hard to escape. And sadly, this one suffers all those in different degrees.  The time period this story covers is relatively short, so each chapter essentially represents only a day of their journey. As a result, the narrative easily becomes monotonous and boring. It definitely lacks that "riveting" quality; therefore, you often find yourself having to push through the duller chapters.  <<less

Tier: C-/  Logic? What logic? Here, have some angsty background and tragically s*upid tropes instead!... "Supporting characters are just here to advance the romance!"—see this?... more>> Even the author admits that we shouldn't be expecting too much from the story. But what I don't understand is, why the f*ck some chapters reads like they were butchered then glued together haphazardly :S <<less

Tier: A+/  *Whips out a megaphone* Ahem... Dear fujoshi&fudanshi! Come, gather 'round, and take a gander, cause I have found the good shit!!! Like, -the GOOD- good shit, you know? The last novel I obssessed over this hard was Nan Chan, and that says a lot. 4.3 rating is doing it a MAJOR injustice; I have a sneaking suspicion that if everything were kept the same and only the author's name were changed to that of a more well-known writer, the score would be well over 4.6.... more>>

The main duo, side chars (mah babies), the plot, that deliciously slow and naturally evolving romance—you name it—everything is beyond perfect! I was already head over heels for how the MC & ML are connected, but then came that heart demon chapter (whole huilian arc) with magnificent symbolism, portrayal, and dives into their inner worlds...and I fell all over again! ML's chase after relief with nothing but hope and the MC's utter opposition with complete hopelessness...hnggh...that sh*t right there, is my kink. Then there is also the Mi Mountain Sect arc... that scene with "prohibiton"... let's just say it's the equivalent of tcgf's "it hurts", and what comes after is even worse :') 

The story features original beasts and creatures, with its own unique mix. However, neither the combat nor the cultivation is at the forefront. Instead, the focus is heavily on the main duo’s relationship, interactions and a certain "mystery". I’m totally okay with this level of action/mystery solving (this might even be the perfect ratio for me). As for the writing style; to me it reads like a controlled chaos and I LOVE that. Yes the pacing is not perfect and sometimes you end up with buttload of info suddenly and don't know wth happened, but I kind of overlooked those parts for the sake of the whole story.

Last but not least: characters. There are strong women characters without casual sexism! Yes you heard me right! (That "Heavens bestowed was not a blessing, but a calamity—I'll be that calamity." scene was beyond epic. Seriously, that lady needs her own novel). I like every single character, but the ML is something else. He is just... *chefskiss* *Mwah* *Swoon* I don't know why, I get heavy Abel Nightroad vibes from him. <<less

I'm so f*cking ashamed of myself for saying that this felt underwhelming. TJQ, forgive me for my insolance, cause...this novel is a chaotic perfection! I'm losing my mind here! This is like Nan Chan's older brother with all that delicious angst and romance!!!!! Among all the danmei I’ve read, no one has executed the “cunning villain toying with a character’s psyche in a time loop” trope this brilliantly. A true, wicked and sick manipulator, brilliant characterization. And the fact that those time loop parts belong to side characters is mind blowing. Story picks up slowly and it really is confusing up until  the "guarding heaven pass arc". Bu after that, it turns into a magnificent beast of xianxia. Also I want to smooch TJQ for writing a Danmei that has zero—I repeat zero sexism. A lot of high level cultivators, prominent figures and sect leaders are woman. And not the "something-something fairy" with a half page long adjectives describing their beauty but just a bunch of strong woman with high cultivation! That's it!!! Seriously I need this novel to taught every writer so maybe we can get this kind of perfection more often! <<less
