Just picked up. Same author as Otaku.

Post-apocalyptic omegaverse. So far it is pretty interesting and very plot-heavy.

The start is pretty slow. MC goes back to one year before the apocalypse. Most novels only go back a few months or speed through this "preparation" stage. However, in this story we have a whole year, and we are not speeding through at all. At 20 chapters in we are still about halfway through that "before" year. Lots of spiritual cultivation, and training, and buying, which are frankly not the most interesting.

By chapter 20 the ML has shown up once, but due to the quality of the translation it was a bit hard to understand what was going on. You can kind of deduce things by the end, but mostly there are some big chunks where we are left wondering WTF just happened.

Also, not sure if it is due to the translation or to the original writer, but the MC has some inconsistencies when it comes to his feelings about the ML (before they meet in the second apocalypse). At some point he is saying that he just wants to take care of him and keep him safe and repay the debt he owes. But then he is saying how he misses him and has feelings for him, but then goes back to the original thought of just taking care of him. To be honest going by his past experiences it doesn't make sense for the MC to feel anything other than gratitude for the ML at this point, since their relationship was not particularly romantic in any way (originally the MC was forced to be in a relationship with ML by the ML).

Update: By chapter 41 we have a new translator, so thankfully the translations get a lot smoother. Sadly the story is still mehh. The apocalypse has finally started. We have taken a weird detour into gang life and the brotherhood of the ML. The ML is also weirdly obsessed with the MC, and the whole "kitten" thing is a bit cringe for me. Idk how I feel about this and if I will pick it back up or drop.

Update: On chap. 63. This novel can get very morally uncomfortable. While in a true end of the world situation we imagine that we will see the worse of humanity (we could also see the best, who knows), we are reading a "light novel" which to me means likeable main characters to follow as they survive, fall in love, and some good face slapping and revenge against the ones that wronged them the first time around. What I was not expecting or liked at all is for the main characters to be utterly ruthless. Killing children and innocent bystanders because they are in a blind rage. Or being calculative and manipulative with their followers. In other words these are not tortured heroes doing what they need to survive, or redeemable antiheroes that feel remorse with their decisions. These are bad people that don't even feel like they have done anything wrong. Even the author comes across as "yeah they did so and so, who cares". <<less

While reading the reviews I saw a couple of things that almost discouraged me from starting the novel, so I thought I would address them.

1- The animals making noise. So the MC decided to grow animals in his “farm”. Reviewers say he is s*upid because animals are going to make noise. I disagree. I think it was a calculated risk. His “farm” is away from cities and any settlements. It is also surrounded by a reinforced wall. So he decided to keep animals which he needs if he plans to feed himself for the long run. To me it made sense.

2- Not knowing about powers. This one had me raise an eyebrow at first, then realized it could be plausible. He was at the bottom of the social ladder in his previous iteration. If only a few people have powers and they kept it quiet so only their immediate followers knew, then there is no reason for a “nobody” to know about it. Just like the average Joe has no idea of the real goings on in government.

Update: I have read more chapters now and a few glaring issues have come forth. Sadly this is a “telling” book. The author just tells you what happened instead of showing you. You find out the ML went on a raid from a comment someone made, you never get to “see” the action.

 The relationship has barely any development once the MC agreed to sleep with the ML. They are just together, but nothing interesting is happening in their relationship.

On top of that the MC and ML have completely separate lives. They each are doing their own thing independently of the other and the other doesn’t know a lot of what is going on. And since the author doesn’t “show” us, we only get to hear about it from random conversations.

So the book got kind of boring and I put it down. Haven’t gone back since. <<less
