I wasn’t reborn with talent or ability, but at least my knowledge from earth allowed me to stay one step ahead in this other world.

Magic exists here, and new progress was rapidly being made in science while magic stagnated in the name of tradition. Using my earthly knowledge and not bound by the traditional thinking, I was able to do things other wizards couldn’t even imagine.

Still, inadvertently becoming an undercover professor for a mysterious secret society at the renowned Theon academy was never in my to-do list!

Premise:

Through a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, Ludger (or Rudger) is forced to step into the role of magical professor to hide his identity when a terrorist bombing on a train kills his fellow passenger and destroys his disguise. The situation is further complicated when he learns his fellow passenger is more than just a simple magic professor. Ludger (or Rudger) has his own mysterious past which further complicates his life as a new semester begins at a magical academy.

4.75 out of 5 stars

I enjoyed this series a lot. It... more>> has a pleasant mix of action, adventure, mystery, drama, fantasy, school life, and comedy. The focus of the story is the MC. As the series progresses, the MC's history is revealed which enjoyable and well executed.

In general, the series is well executed except for one of the central characters. I just can not connect with nor really understand them. And, it is one of the central supporting characters. Also, while reading the series, the way that the relationship between the main character (Rudger or Ludger) and this supporting character was portrayed was one that I could not connect with.

Spoiler

I am specifically talking about the familial affection between the MC and Rine (or Line or Renee). I could not connect to their supposed familial relationship. Reading it felt like the relationship was forced. To me it was like trying to get a square peg into a round hole.

Also, Rine seems to be a character that is portrayed in a way that is rather inconsistent for a supporting character. Over the series, she flip flops between being stubborn and independent then innocent then weak then powerful then innocent again.

[collapse]

Maybe, it was the character. Maybe, it was me. Maybe, it the way the story was structured or written. In the end, it decreased my enjoyment of the series and made me stop reading the series during one of the later arcs that focuses on that relationship and supporting character. I might come back to it and skip or skim that arc.

The other characters in the series are fun, well executed, and have depth. The author put effort into the world-building in this series. The magic system, politics, religion, etc. Are explained and well thought out. With the exception of that one supporting character, I really enjoyed this series.

Overview: Good series to read. I have trouble connecting with one of the supporting characters but other than that this series is worth reading. <<less

This is a very fun story. MC is pretty dag-gum strong, but always maintains his modesty about his ability, in part due to his upbringing which comes up later in the story. Fights are very satisfying as MC isn't just your usual OP character. He's plenty strong, but uses his brain and fights intelligently, using everything he can at his disposal. It also has a good cast of supporting characters and builds on them. There are actual character arcs and good small arcs for good guys and villains alike. Bad... more>> guys aren't one-dimensional and often have solid backstories.

Spoiler

Also enjoy the journeys of MC as he travels the world to collect the teeth of various rare monsters to test the limits of what his unique friend Hans can transform into when stabbed by a tooth of animals or magic beasts.

The novel is pretty good. I first read it as a manhwa then read the novel afterward. Rudger is giving me the "Professor Snape" vibe from Harry Potter. I got tired of reading novels with harem involved so I liked this novel at the start but as the novel progresses the number of females who are involved with the MC increases. I'm okay with more female characters being added to the story as long as they're not gonna fall in love with the MC but as things stand, I think... more>> they're gonna fall in love with Rudger in the end. The author also added 'misunderstandings' to the fray so I kind of not feeling the vibe to continue reading this.

When Rudger thought if he should kill one of the female characters here I really supported that thought but was kind of disappointed with his choice in the end. Haha. Oh well, I'm not the author, so. And I read in the reviews that that female character has her redemption arc so maybe I'll continue reading this novel to see it. I hope it's a good arc since I'm kind of already fed up with another female character in this novel. <<less

The MC is a transmigtator who arrives in a steam-punk world where new progress was rapidly being made in science while magic stagnated in the name of tradition. MC who become a professor by accident is your topical cold, elegant, full of dignity, but actually a good guy Op protagonist.

this novel could be said to be coated with cliches, misunderstanding, mystery, fantasy, adventure and drama. you could say it's to my liking... but all the characters are a bit shallow (at least they exist). Girls will simp for him because... more>> he helped them or notices them once (this harem-ish vibe which I really hate). Guys (most don't have a name) will either highly respect him or instead go against him.

Overall this work has high entertainment value anyway, and I can recommend as long it doesn't turn harem half way. <<less

Very good.

Structure is a bit all over the place, with sudden shifts of story focus from one place to another, but the minute to minute narrative is great.

All the characters are a bit shallow, but fun. They all have very healthy presence, complete opposite of the Infinite Harem Works in "Villain wants to live" where the number of males was zero, and all females were so tragically in love with MC, he was the sole purpose of their existence. These two works are too similar not to draw a parallel,... more>> and dear god this one is many times better.

This novel has almost no proper story, it's a fantasy slice of life with a bit of adventure and some mystery. All the plot that is actually present here barely develops at a snail's pace, but this work has great entertainment value anyway, and I can recommend it to anyone.

UPD c382: Line by line writing is atrociously terrible. Also, author gave up on trying to construct the main story completely, and deus ex machina'd everything instead of weaving a narrative, so I'll give up on this novel too. <<less

Fairly good reading.

The first few chapters are a bit of a cluster-ferp but after that everything is nice and streamlined.

The word-flow and writing style are pretty good (except for the first few chapters). The story itself is interesting enough, though the expertise of the MC is dubious it gets filled in a bit more as the story progresses. The general plot is entertaining but a bit out there, with a bit of intrigue mixed in. The overall atmosphere bounces between funny misunderstandings to broodingly gloomy at the snap of a... more>> finger.

Overall, a fairly good read. It's not the most outstanding reading out there, but it's good enough. <<less

I rather like this novel, so I will try my best to not spoil it.

Instead, I'll talk about why this novel works despite the MC's concept being sort of a joke that's imitating/parodying a bunch of characters from other stories, or from history, as his secret identities.

When handling an OP character, it's important to make sure that the story doesn't become too repetitive by having the OP character solve everything, all the time, instantly. Otherwise it gets boring fast to the point where you'd have been better off making the... more>> story a one-off.

The stronger the character (and the longer the story), the more important it is to dilute them by building up the world, supporting cast, plot, etc.

e.g. Imagine if One Punch Man was nothing but Saitama punching things and none of the other heroes got to do anything, ever. No epic Genos fights or over-the-top psychic feats from Tatsumaki or even any emotional Mumen Rider scenes. Just Saitama beating everything in one punch. It'd be boring, right?

That's why this novel works despite the MC being so OP.

It's because the author is properly introducing new things into the novel or building up the backgrounds of side characters that become more relevant over time and subsequently causes the story to feel like a natural progression of taking care of things on an ever expanding check list rather than a meandering slog that other novels end up being as their MC's just drift from place to place because reasons.

I highly recommend giving this a try. <<less

MC has the backstory for every major hero and villain in Western literature, and has also stolen their names, identities, personality, history, and even their arch enemies somehow.

Nonsensically, Sherlock Holmes is also in this, but as a girl. They don't call her that, but they do spell her name backwards phonetically since it absolutely makes no sense whatsoever for that character to even be in this universe.

In addition to incredibly overpowered magic, MC has the combined total abilities and backstories of all of the characters of classical Western literature, except... more>> for Sherlock Holmes. And they made him a girl, and why the f*ck is she even in this story? Because MC stole Moriarty's identity? Does that just makes Holmes appear out of nowhere? Why? She's a f*cking fictional character from MC's original world. Annoying nonsense.

This story is like 50 stories put into a blender and forced into an academy / heist caper thing. <<less

I like it and would recommend it. It is good. So what if there are some coping which I never saw here, I would rather call it inspiration. It is good written and cosistent. I already read so many terrible novels in which story is so inconsistent that this, this is one of the best I read if you want to prove me wrong and give me something better that is not a romantic story. (Of course there are better novels like lord of mysteries or maybe evils god lackey... more>> but I think this is one of the best)

Edit (I read more)

I I think there is too much woman here that are falling??? For MC but everything else is too good to drop this. <<less

I really can’t give this any higher than 3, because from the ground up it’s a copycat, but it’s really poorly done. Not just the basic concept or idea, but as you read further in you find more and more concepts and story elements being copied from everything... from movies, to other novels... it really, really lacks originality. Maybe it’ll get better as it develops more, but I dropped it at chapter 110

The largest problem I found with the novel was its poor translation. I decided to quit due to it, as while to an extent I wouldn't mind shutting off my brain and reading this book, it takes effort to decipher what in the world they mean. Sometimes the translation is acceptable, other times you need to think for a moment. It's never unreadable.

The second problem is that this is an OP protagonist novel, and it features all of the problems and tropes that accompany that. Most other characters are cardboard... more>> cutouts, and it doesn't really feel like the world has people in it.

The past of the main character is confusing, and though it's been a while since I've last looked at the book, if I remember correctly, some of his past events make no sense.

The beginning, on the other hand, is a good idea poorly executed. <<less

Nah, after the third 'cool' persona this becomes boring. I can already feel the 4th, 5th and 6th persona creeping around the corner. Very gimmicky, I expected more. The core of the novel is great -- misunderstanding MC who gets entangled with many different secrets. But why does the author force him to be so badass? Really ruins the flair.

it is very intersting novel, the protagonist was very clever and myterious, side charaters are not bland and the world building is great. However im very confused to the guy the that the MC replace as proffesor. I think that character is not dumb enough to die because of reckleness.

there still plot hole, but its minimal.

You will not really see anything new here, but it is well done. Yes, MC is OP, but he is also very aware of his limitations and go out of his way to avoid conflicts that he would be in disadvantage (although he does understimate himself). Girls fall in love with him, he doesn't even notice, or doesn't care enough to think too much about it.

This series shines in one way for me: The setting. The setting is the beginner of a steam punk world with magic: meaning we have... more>> science and magic "coexisting" (not really, some mages despite science for no reason whatsoever). Now, it DEFINITELY needs some polish, but we don't see this very often. I just wish it didn't try to go for some overused tropes that everyone's tired of already (MC's master indentity for example). <<less
