After Becoming the Protagonist’s Inner Demon

Description

Xiao Mo accidentally travelled into a book and became the protagonist’s inner demon.

The system actively introduced: “You need to accompany Chu Jinglan as he grow, and then be killed by him at the right time to prove his Dao. After completing the task, you can get a chance to be reborn and survive in the world of cultivation with a new identity. Isn’t it a good deal!”

Unexpectedly, Xiao Mo closed his eyes and lay down after listening: “Got it, won’t do it, he’ll die if he wants to.”

System:? ? ?

Where did the rebellious host come from? It’s different from what was agreed!

Xiao Mo felt that he was very unlucky. Not only was he forced to travel through time, but he also had to be the inner demon of someone he didn’t like and live with him day and night.

That’s right, Xiao Mo didn’t like Chu Jinglan’s character design.

Because in the original book, Chu Jinglan could have taken the script of Long Aotian, a genius who was abolished and then reborn, stepping on mountains and rivers, and sweeping the world with a sword. However, for the sake of a fickle hearthrob shou, he died without body left.

Thinking it was a career-oriented article, but unexpectedly getting splashed with dog blood, Xiao Mo decisively expressed his disdain. He wanted to be passive, indifferent, and have nothing to do with whatever Chu Jinglan did.

He watched coldly as the youth went from being a proud son of heaven to a cripple, watched coldly as his engagement get annulled and humiliated, watched coldly as he was betrayed and abandoned by his own family, watched coldly —— he couldn’t watch anymore!

“Chu Jinglan, can you tolerate this? Fight back. If you can’t do it, give me your body, I’ll do it!”

Chu Jinglan, who was also fed up with him, wiped off the blood. Looking at the inner demon that was more anxious than him, his expression was complicated and unpredictable: “…I need the inner demon to help me?”

Xiao Mo: Who wants to help you?

But it was this inner demon who “didn’t care” about the life and death of the protagonist, who accompanied Chu Jinglan to rebuild his cultivation, accompanied him ascended to the peak, and accompanied him through the most difficult moments in his life.

Then when he was at the highest, the inner demon died in his arms.

Xiao Mo lay in Chu Jinglan’s arms and vomited blood, thinking that he would stay far away from him after his rebirth.

After his was reborn, before he could hide, Chu Jinglan, who had become an immortal lord, suddenly appeared in front of him.

“Xiao Mo,” Chu Xianzun’s eyes were calm but there’s hint of madness within, “Where do you want to leave me this time?”

Xiao Mo: !

Wait, I have changed my identity, how did you recognize me? ?

Omg this story was so cute!

Totally recommend this for people who need both the MC and ML to have brain cells, and to feel like they both actually fall in love with each other!! I've encountered so many novels in the 'transmigrate to a cultivation world and look after a book character' subgenre where even by the end I'm just not convinced that the MC actually loves the ML in the same way, rather than just giving in due to other feelings like guilt/ affection, etc.

One thing that really stood... more>> out to me (because it's bugged me so badly in other novels, even ones I liked overall) was that the MC actually improved at the skill he wanted to learn. Xiao Mo started out not being able to play the flute at all and progressed all the way to 'musical cultivation' attacks etc! And he was actually useful in battle! And the ML didn't also learn the flute and play it way better way faster than our MC for no reason! I did not realise before typing this how much it annoys me whenever an MC tries to pick up a new skill and the ML does it superhumanly well, effortlessly, and in the end MC never gets better or gives up entirely and it's just written off as one of his cute like quirks. "Oh he just CAN'T cook/sing/whatever teehee" screw that!! Let my MC GROW! Let him achieve that satisfaction!!

And I loveddd the attention paid to rehabilitating Chu Jinglan after Xiao Mo reappeared. I won't say it was realistic in any way, but compared to other novels, the amount of INTENTIONAL care Xiao Mo puts into helping Chu Jinglan is what really touched me. I'd say even compared to Mistakenly Saving the Villain (which tbh I read a while ago), I felt like Xiao Mo was genuinely helping Chu Jinglan recover because he (eventaully) got a clear understanding of Chu Jinglan's mental state, and met him where he was.

A big part of that was the author allowing Xiao Mo to realise things and change his mind about things throughout the novel. I'm definitely a dense MC enjoyer, but when Xiao Mo finally realised that Chu Jinglan loved him too? And he immediately put that into context and realised how his disappearance has effected Chu Jinglan? Chef's kiss. Delicious. I've never read a reveal so satisfying before. This novel made me realise how much emotional depth is usually missing from these kind of reveals. The MC finding out that ML loved him all along and being all "no way... we're just [insert relationship]... how can somone so great and powerful love me..." is cute and all, but damn when Xiao Mo immediately started making an exposure therapy plan for Chu Jinglan to process his PTSD response to Xiao Mo being outside his line of sight, I truly believed that they loved each other equally as much.

And I'm a sucker for a happy ending >:] <<less

Rating: 4.5

Pairing Type: transmigrator MC x book character ml; shou MC x gong ml; inner demon MC x sword cultivation ml; extremely devoted ml; unconditional love

Heat level: high (2/5 spicy; love scenes are behind closed doors)

... more>> Dog food meter: 3/5 - they are literally inseparable but the burn is glacial slow. They don’t get together until basically the last 20 chapters and do not kiss before then

Re-readability: 2/5 probably won’t reread

Trope: xuanhuan; secret realms, dao companions, demonic beasts, demonic cultivation, transmigration, system administrator, point system

Triggers: violence; mu*der; war

I really enjoyed it, my only real gripe is that it took sooooo long for them to finally get together and it took so much heartbreak to get there.

The bulk of this was actually a pretty standard xuanhuan. Super OP powers and treasures around every corner.

Despite that, it isn’t particularly Gary Stu. MC and ML are pretty much constantly meeting obstacles. These two can never f*cking rest.

Spoiler

This is an extremely rare case where I somewhat can tolerate a character going yandere from a narrative perspective. This is entirely because it’s treated as what it is: an illness. ML becomes a yandere and it tortures him because he knows that he can’t act on his impulses or he will hurt MC. So, a lot of the final plot is dedicated to MC helping him deal with his heart illness and let go of his inner turmoil.

When he was talking about how he knew he was no longer the person he once was but he has no idea how to be that person again... bruh I f*cking BAWLED. And how despite inner impulses making him want to control MC but he knows thats not how you treat someone you love, so he actively fights his own impulses? That what I’m f*cking talking about, that’s how you effectively write a yandere.

[collapse]

It was, however, introduced so late and after everything they went through. So I still felt like I went through the f*cking ringer. I was DISTRAUGHT. I don’t know, despite the fact that I liked how that trope was handled, I wish it hadn’t happened in this book. It wasn’t necessary.

Anyway, I actually really enjoyed it and would recommend. Just probably won’t reread because I didn’t love the ending. <<less

The inner demon plot point was quite creative honestly. I just wish the final villain showdown was a bit more substantial. Tbh I felt like towards the end, the author just wanted to speed up the ending but at the same time dragged it out.

Spoiler

ngl I wish fenxiu had a different storyline. He was supposedly the ultimate villain but I liked him more than the Su guy. His redemption arc would’ve been fire. His interactions with MC/ML always left him with a pikachu face lol.

The inner demon setting between the MC and ML was really unique and my favourite plot point. It offered a new type of dynamic I didn't know I needed to read. The plot is focused on the relationship between the main characters, not so much on a grander scale.

There is a review by Hungry Beast mostly dissing the plot. If you have read it, let me say something. This novel is not plot focused, but it isn't as bad as the impression that review leaves. There were some things that... more>> I didn't like, but overall I recommend giving this a try. <<less

I'm wondering why is there a review about farming 😅 yet this is cultivation novel and it has likes.

Anw, this is a Good read! Unlike most detailed cultivation novels with long chapters, this one keeps things focused - MC's helping the ML until he overcomes his tribulation.

Not perfect, but I enjoyed their journey. I also think it is not rushed as the impt scenes are written in a concise manner (but not rushed).

It’s such a wonderful story, well-written and very fleshed out.

A lot reviews here already detailed the high points but let me explain why a lot of people don’t like the last 1/3.

Because it breaks the genre’s implied promise.

For 100 chapters, we were promised sweet non-toxic grass-green relationship. It showed in every soft interaction, in every smile they gave each other, in every line of thinking. Then, BAM, the payoff changed abruptly. We were given a heavy angst-filled toxic result. It veered too far from the trope’s expectations and not in... more>> a good way.

I think it’s all very well-written still but I’m also disappointed at the direction the author took it. I wish we could have gotten the payoff that was promised.

But still a good story overall! I will let it break my heart again. <<less

4.5/5 would read again

The couple dynamic great. The progression from enemies (very short) to friends to lovers was well paced. Misunderstandings for the plot but I just love how there is actual communication with these two.

The inner demon plot was very unique and I enjoyed the journey, their daily lives and its interesting how youd uncover the mystery as you read along.

The slow burn wasnt tiring to read and it felt like a good stroll, there are times I cant sleep just to say one more chapter in the middle... more>> of the night lol

Spoiler

After the inner demon plot is where both MC and ML finally get to seperate. The ML had to wait for 300yrs while MC basically Had an incense stick in a sub space.

there was no chase chapters, we go straight to the point. ML finished MC's task (honestly wouldn't blame him) as a reader you'd think youd witness this in a slow burn but nope, but thats okay because MC had to relive through some of the said struggles to fix the MLs mind that got corrupted. (Understandable cus he was basically waiting with no clue when or where, coping with a god that said he'd come back)

Speaking of straight to the point. After knowing the feelings are mutual, I felt like a single dog eating dog food, I can relate to the NPCs witnessing PDA lol

[collapse]

Spoiler

This is just me, but I was kinda hoping someone discovered MC was actually an inner demon cus it would be funny someone saying around the lines of 'loving an inner demon is ML loving himself' or 'no wonder MC looks like ML because inner demon MC came from ML'

I dunno, im a clown, this will live in my head rent free or if someone writes a FanFiction

It was a wonderful read. At the start I had a difficult time understanding what was happening but I eventually found that the plot was very interesting, it was originally supposed to be just a quick read but it was so good I just had to finish it. It’s not like those transmigration stories who try to be overly comedic or overly emotional it was the perfect balance of seriousness and a few moments of lighthearted scenes. I’ve seen a few other reviews and I can’t say I agree, ... more>>
Spoiler

The ending was rushed I admit, but the characters did not necessarily become one dimensional. The way Xiao mo left him hurt him so much of course he’d become a sucker for love and go insane, it wasn’t because the author ONLY needed drama but also because of how his trust easily shattered. He planned to spend his life with Xiao mo and never even break through his cultivation but Xiao Mo in a moment of vulnerability took advantage of his trust and killed himself with his hands. Killing your beloved, who has been with you since you became crippled, when your mother died, when everyone has left him- with your hands? Who wouldn’t go insane? But that doesn’t mean Xiao mo is to blame (he had his own reasons.), but how he takes it upon himself to restore his beloved memories as a way of repayment for waiting so long and dying without even telling him shows how much he cares. Xiao mo wanted to show him that he’s back, wanted to show him that he didn’t waste 300 years being insane for nothing. Xiao mo wanted to HEAL Chu jinglan of the trauma he gave him even if it meant wasting another few years. Both protagonists were very good characters till the end.

Now that I’m thinking about it

The romance wasn’t necessarily out of nowhere too, the pace could be considered fast but again with their situation it was bound to be paced fast.

Your home is not a graveyard... it’s my heart

Screaming, rolling, cursing at the original Heaven’s Will who made my babies suffer

This 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

... more>> I loved reading this novel. It was one that I couldn’t put down. Not that I was excited to find out what would happen but because I KNEW exactly what was coming & I was READY!!! I narrow down these types of melodrama-cultivation novels to two types:

1. It starts off angsty & dogblooded so I know the latter half is gonna be so gratifying.

2. It starts off so sweet that when sh*t hits the fan the pain is gonna hurt so good.

This is the latter & yes, it hurt like a thousand knives.

MC transmigrates to become the inner demon of a powerful cultivator (ML) in a novel. He knows he’s gonna get killed in the end in order for ML to ascend in cultivation. But he also knows that he won’t officially die & that he’ll gain another identity after. ML DOESN’T KNOW THAT. AHHHHHHHHHH

Anyways, I think it’s such a good plot. Classically dogblooded & dramatic, but I appreciated that the author mercifully tied up loose ends. The ending was MORE than I expected. Maybe I’m traumatized by novels that end haphazardly with a “they ended up happy” conclusion. This closed the most of loops & I’m satisfied. Is the writing perfect? No. Did it feel somewhat deus ex machina-ish? Sure. Were the antagonists underwhelming? Yup. Nevertheless, I haven’t enjoyed a novel this much in some time so I’m glad to have picked it up.

No smut, but just immense longing & sadness. THE BEST. Manifesting that my memories be wiped out so I can reread again for the first time. <<less

The summary is a little misleading, this is not a miscommunication/comedy of errors type plot. Instead, it focuses more on multiple timelines and memory loss. As others have said, the main 2/3rds is pretty good, if a little standard for a cultivation novel, and the final third is a rushed ending tying up loose threads. Towards the end, the author does try to throw some mutual pining in but honestly, it fell kind of flat. Overall, not a terrible novel but not super unique.

The writing for 2/3 of the story was top notch and I never got bored of reading. Then the last 1/3 was rushed and everything was jumble together, we were introduced to a massive time skip, skipping several plot points which kind annoyed me. Also the tribulation parting wasn't written emotional enough. The author wrote the ml's mother last emotional scenes and the journey after being crippled pretty well

I really want to see there 2 events live not being rebroadcast ed in memories.

Some stories are strong in the beginning and weak in the end this was kinda one of them.

Overall I really enjoyed this story and I loved both MC and ML alot, the depth of the character, the complexity. Other characters were also written well, Ml's mum, side characters they met on the way but author stop doing that in the last 1/3.

There's humor, emotional, plot points, character developments, written well side characters. Not boring at all. We see both MC and ML protecting each other it's not one sided. We watch emotionless ML slow warm up, we watch MC nonchalantly not caring about anything to slowly develop feelings for this world and Ml. <<less

I liked this novel especially in the beginning. I love a bit of bickering.

The couples dynamic reminds me a lot of wei wuxian and lan zhan (mdzs).

A charming and open protagonist with his stoic and strong ml. Even though I enjoyed mdzs more this story is also good.

The writing style is good and pacing is also okay. However the story dragged on a bit towards the end.

I like moments of yearning and a bit of tragedy but this novel didn’t make me feel the emotions of the characters enough. I would have preferred a more expressive ML after their reunion. I thought it was a bit rushed how the MC did all the pda. It just felt too forced.

I would loved it more if their romance would develop in a slower pace where they discover and realize their feelings together once more.

One word : Incredible. The way the author write it just right. The story pace progression neither too slow or fast. Especially along the way we can see the feelings between the couple slowly growing (ofc they didn't realized anything). The MC and ML is strong in their own way and always support each other. The love between them... so sweet and pure. It makes my heart bleeding from sweetness.

Of course they're not perfect and still have flaws, But instead justified it with some bullsh*t or because bias, they... more>> admit it and working hard to become better. Slowly but surely. Oh and also there is a communication between them. If there is a problem, they will talk it with their partner. (unlike most of other MC & ML cough cough). The character development is top notch.

Besides that, we still have the plot. The plot is not confusing and straight to the point. I really enjoy reading it. Near the end it caught me off guard (again). The interaction with other characters is also good, there is actually a depth in it. <<less

Have you ever questioned what love means to you?

It is the tender moments of fleeing glances and kisses?

The warmth and steady assurance accompanying you in your darkest moments

... more>> Or the strong but gently wrapped chains that binds your entire world?

If it's any the above, then this story might just suit you.

The story begins with our MC just freshly transmigrated and still holding vigilance and skeptism about his situation and the system assigned to him.

He initially strived to do as minimum as possible and not bother with the fate of the world or the characters in it.

That didn't last long as he soon realises that he and ML had a strong magnetic force that repelled eachother.

Despite both being geniuses in their own way and had similar train of thoughts, they managed to irritate one another and get into childish skirmishes.

But as fate would have it during tough times they had to rely on eachother to overcome their challenges.

You see MC is an inner demon and as such he is bound by the restrictions placed upon him.

While he can manifest a physical form, he cannot harm any and all living creatures (except for his host ML), unless he possesses a human body.

Despite MC initial reliance to get involve with ML, he slowly changes his mind overtime as he spends time with ML and realises the difficulties and struggles the ML had to endure. But at the same time helpless to change the fate of what was predestined.

When ML became crippled and lost everything, MC accompanied him all throughout the way.

While no longer hostile to eachother, the two still remained awkward and unsure how they should treat eachother as partners (no romance yet)

As both of them grew up in bad conditions, they find themselves unused to receiving kindness from others. Eventually they do overcome this and began to feel more comfortable with one another while caring for eachother at the same time.

In my opinion, I loved how their love for eachother did not seemed forced but was a gradual building of trust and support.

You witness as they bond slowly grows deeper and how they realise their love for one another, wishing to protect the other and share their burdens.

Now is this a perfect novel?

The answer is no. And I don't think I have to cover that as I'm pretty sure many others have probably already covered it or will.

For this review I'm looking at the relationship which the main focus of the novel while also diving into a bit about the characters.

For example MC:

Spoiler

An interesting protagonist. He's not the overly mischievous type and is mostly serious when required.

But takes most but not all things quite lightly.

He's not a cruel or heartless guy, evident by how he saved a child from drowning before his death.

But he's not overly kind either as he can be ruthless when he wants to be.

Overall a unique protagonist that you don't see often and can't be placed into a defined category

[collapse]

Now the ML:

Spoiler

An iceberg on the outside but sweet and considerate to his love ones.

Besides the MC, the first person he cared about the most was his mother. And after her unfortunate demise at the hands of his clansmen, his once untainted heart began to show signs of withering.

He is normally collective and calm but don't let that demeanor fool you. He actually acts quite his age when he meets MC.

I mean the two literally had a childish squiable of what we can define as two kindergarten kids bittering.

I also enjoy how his journey from a guineas to a cripple affected his character arc.

If I could use one word to describe this man it would be "endure"

Unlike most who break under numerous pressures, ML strives in hardships. He constantly pushes himself to the limit and faces his challenges head on.

His achievements are not just because of luck or solely based on his talent, but through the countless battles whether physically or metaphorically he had to endure.

That's what I admire about him as a ML. Despite everything that seems to be at odds against him, he always manages to pull through and outshine others.

Really good slow burn. The relationship grows very nicely and satisfying. The main couple is competent but also reasonable. Live how they communicate with each other and how it prevents so much misunderstanding. The story definitely could benefit from more chapters. I liked this novel. The whole inner demon premise was creative, though after awhile he became a real person and lost the inner demon plotline until it was necessary for him to spy on someone or reconnect with ML after they get teleported. Like he literally takes a nap and falls asleep outside so that whole sea of consciousness stuff at the beginning and building a home there was kind of pointless if he doesn't need to use spiritual energy to manifest physically. I also feel like the author forgot... more>> to flesh out the protagonist and how he affected the seven suitors, it feels like he only really affected the one villain and had nil interactions with any of the others despite one even divining a love tribulation with them. I really wish we saw how that was resolved.

Buuuut, all that aside, I do like their romance. The way they both slowly come to realize their feelings was well done. I really liked that they both acted like brats to each other at the beginning and you really see them slowly mature with the year changes. <<less

I read through it in one go! Definitely a good read. The feelings developing between the main characters was amazing because it felt natural and not forced. Really enjoyed their journey.
