After Becoming the Protagonist’s Inner Demon

Xiao Mo accidentally travelled into a book and became the protagonist’s inner demon.

The system actively introduced: “You need to accompany Chu Jinglan as he grow, and then be killed by him at the right time to prove his Dao. After completing the task, you can get a chance to be reborn and survive in the world of cultivation with a new identity. Isn’t it a good deal!”

Unexpectedly, Xiao Mo closed his eyes and lay down after listening: “Got it, won’t do it, he’ll die if he wants to.”

System:? ? ?

Where did the rebellious host come from? It’s different from what was agreed!

Xiao Mo felt that he was very unlucky. Not only was he forced to travel through time, but he also had to be the inner demon of someone he didn’t like and live with him day and night.

That’s right, Xiao Mo didn’t like Chu Jinglan’s character design.

Because in the original book, Chu Jinglan could have taken the script of Long Aotian, a genius who was abolished and then reborn, stepping on mountains and rivers, and sweeping the world with a sword. However, for the sake of a fickle hearthrob shou, he died without body left.

Thinking it was a career-oriented article, but unexpectedly getting splashed with dog blood, Xiao Mo decisively expressed his disdain. He wanted to be passive, indifferent, and have nothing to do with whatever Chu Jinglan did.

He watched coldly as the youth went from being a proud son of heaven to a cripple, watched coldly as his engagement get annulled and humiliated, watched coldly as he was betrayed and abandoned by his own family, watched coldly —— he couldn’t watch anymore!

“Chu Jinglan, can you tolerate this? Revenge back. If you can’t do it, give me your body, I’ll do it!”

Chu Jinglan, who was also fed up with him, wiped off the blood. Looking at the inner demon that was more anxious than him, his expression was complicated and unpredictable: “…I need the inner demon to help me?”

Xiao Mo: Who wants to help you?

But it was this inner demon who “didn’t care” about the life and death of the protagonist, who accompanied Chu Jinglan to rebuild his cultivation, accompanied him ascended to the peak, and accompanied him through the most difficult moments in his life.

Then when he was at the highest, the inner demon died in his arms.

Xiao Mo lay in Chu Jinglan’s arms and vomited blood, thinking that he would stay far away from him after his rebirth.

After his was reborn, before he could hide, Chu Jinglan, who had become an immortal lord, suddenly appeared in front of him.

“Xiao Mo,” Chu Xianzun’s eyes were calm but there’s hint of madness within, “Where do you want to leave me this time?”

Xiao Mo: !

Wait, I have changed my identity, how did you recognize me? ?

Lol, guys, I know this is quite a good read, but overall I still give it 3 (I have an urge to give 2.5) stars.

The translation is great, and the novel is easy to digest. What I took from the story is the idea of how to love and be loved. You can be in a relationship, but if your heart is wounded from prolonged longing, you might not be able to feel what it’s like to truly love or be loved — that’s essentially the ML’s healing journey. ... more>>

I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if I were in high school or hadn’t read much BL (or read much in general?). It could’ve been a nice light start. Unfortunately, I’m now aware enough to question the storyline and feel resistant when the author tries to tell me, “Time to be sad.” Like, come on!! If you want me to empathize, show me through the story and logic — use your writing skills! You can’t just plainly instruct me to feel connected to the protagonist. I can pretend a few times, sure, but if it keeps happening, I'll start to feel morally and intellectually insulted. How am I supposed to enjoy the story when it demands me to shut off my brain and emotions just to go along with it, even when my inner voice says, “I don’t buy it”?

Also, if you’re looking for a meaningful, adventurous journey — this ain’t it. Everything feels way too easy. You’ve got your classic high-achiever, invincible protagonist (lol, I could literally feel my eyes rolling, and the guilt of wasting time creeping in). There's this "mean and spoiled" vibe in both the MC and ML. Not the fun, sassy kind of mean — just plain annoying. It’s like the voice inside my head say, “Yeah, they’re great, but I don’t love them. They can love each other, live in their own world, but don’t talk to me, lol.” Or, “Sure, I’ll do business with them, maybe even help them through hard times, but I’m not joining their gossip circle or taking sides in their drama.” That’s how the characters feel to me.

Maybe the story is written for people who are exploring the idea of love for the first time? (Cough... still kinda shallow.) There’s not much that’s truly challenging. No real agony — I mean, the ML’s background is somewhat convincing, but that’s about it. No intricate plot, no betrayal, no politics, no underlying schemes. The setbacks feel more like props to boost the protagonists’ greatness. And sure, I’m not demanding dark, twisted arcs — but without those elements, the story just feels flat. I know it’s fiction, but without emotional depth or tension, it becomes fiction within fiction — and that leaves you feeling kinda empty.

Should you read it?

If you have a whole summer break and absolutely nothing else to do — sure. But honestly? If you can, maybe read something else. <<less

I liked the story, but I felt like the ending had too much drama for no reason and it felt like I was reading an entirely different story. Maybe the author felt like they had to show off the love between the couple? The rest of it is good - the side characters are also reasonably fleshed out. Overall a good read if you ignore the last few chapters.

I'm actually a bit miffed.

Until chapter 100 the novel is really good, nice plot, nice character development of the two. The side characters are cute, even if they don't really evolve.

I just really think the ending could have been handled better.

The time skip of 300 years is totally unnecessary.

It's not even explained well: "Oh no host, something went wrong."

The whole point of this novel and the friendship/love of the two main characters is that Xiao Mo roots for Chu Jinglan to live a happy and sucessful life after going through so much. Those 300 years felt like unneeded suffering, just to make the gong more yandere. Even if Xiao Mo unties those knots in his heart shortly after, why did the author think that this is a good idea? Maybe she couldn't come up with a good way to finish off the big boss and made it as anticlimatic as possible, by saying Chu Jinglan already finished all the work while Xiao Mo was forced to skip 300 years. This could have been a really solid novel with enemies to lovers who worked together and got a well deserved happy ending. It did not need so much extra pain in between. A timeskip that was shorter would have been totally fine.

Well let me tell you that this novel is one of the best farming novels you will ever read in your life.

The main characters are equal and there is no weak and sensitive bottom or possessive yandere top who falls in love with the bottom at the first show of kindness.

Both of their feelings develop harmoniously as the plot progresses and the interaction between them is very sweet.

... more>> The bad guys were sometimes really annoying but that's the way it should be.

The side characters were great some of the characters I really liked

I didn't really get bored in this novel the plot is going well not fast not slow with a nice slow romance that makes you say (oh yeah this is what love should be)

In short, this is a great story in all aspects with appropriate anxiety and surprises as the plot progresses. <<less

Sweet story filled with bits of bitterness. It is very well written and doesn't feel too streched. Author conveys feelings very naturaly and main couple's feelings feel real and not appear out of thin air. Definite reccomend!

This is closer to 3.5 stars in my head but I did enjoy the first 2/3 of the novel so I’ll bump it up to a 4.

The first 2/3rds were a blast to read. XM and CJL went from enemies to begrudging allies to “everyone knows they’re married except them” so naturally and wonderfully. I really liked that even though they were “geniuses” they actually got to act their age. Like of course they’re gonna be thoughtless and s*upid and embarrass themselves they’re 17 and friendless! Seeing them slowly learn... more>> to trust and care about each other—not just because they’re obligated by circumstance, but because they want to—was really sweet.

However, like a few other reviewers, I was disappointed by the final third of the novel.

I can point to the exact moment where I stopped enjoying myself and started getting critical about what I was reading.
Spoiler

The 9 Floor Pavilion arc ending... sigh. The whole conflict of XM being CJL’s inner demon had been building steadily, and I was looking forward to the inevitable confrontation between the two. Instead there’s nothing because XM ends up mind-controlling CJL into killing him, and CJL isn’t even conscious during the process. Like okay, that’s anticlimactic... hopefully the timeskip we know about from the summary isn’t too long and we get to the juicy fallout soon.

The timeskip is 300 goddamn years long. This ruins everything, and I’m only being a little overdramatic. A 300 year timeskip is a pacing issue in and of itself. All the previously interesting conflict is shelved and replaced by the new issue of CJL being a crazy obsessive mu*der hermit. One of the things I liked most was that XM and CJL were equals: in age, power, intellect. They balanced each other out. Now CJL is 300 years older and the unchallengeable god-king of the entire realm, while XM hasn’t lived half a day past 20 in any of his previous lives; maybe this isn’t too egregious a gap in the xianxia world, but for me (a lowly mortal) this is a ridiculous power imbalance. The final arc basically just being XM healing CJL with ~the power of love~ does not resolve this for me, and what started as a realistic relationship forged from mutual trust and affection ended up being kind of cliché and definitely off putting.

[collapse]

There were a few other things that bothered me to a lesser extent but I’m just going to put them in a bullet list because this review is already s*upid long:

  • XM/XJL’s character arcs both stagnated after realizing their feelings; both stopped being interesting as individual characters, especially CJL
  • Side characters lacked depth. Most existed as cannon fodder/cheap one-and-done plot devices/to be force-fed dog food
  • Speaking of lacking depth the villains were SO lame. I kept thinking they’d be so much more interesting but they all fell flat in different ways. Su Baimo in particular was so pathetic and ineffective I kind of just felt bad for him. And speaking of him I had several other grievances with his portrayal but that’s a whole different can of worms
What’s most frustrating to me is that the later writing isn’t necessarily illogical; if it was I could just dismiss it as lazy and go on with my day. But I can see why the author made the choices they did, even if I don’t agree with them. And for some reason, this novel falling just short of greatness bothers me more than if the whole thing was bad.

Honestly, I don’t not recommend the novel— 2/3rds of it being enjoyable is still pretty good! Just be aware that the last 30 or so chapters fall off hard and end up playing out like SVSSS but worse. <<less

I'm so so happy I got to read this after it was completely translated, because I just know I would have gone crazy at any point after certain chapter cliffhangers. This was an epic read, and a love story that just had me tearing up with how heartfelt things are between the MC and ML. I loved how their relationship progressed, even through the hard parts.

I loved almost all the secondary characters, and my only gripe would be wishing we got more of them, which is very rare for me... more>> to want lol. But I'm still overall happy with how things went, and understood that this story is truly centered on the MC and ML.

They do exhibit some OP-ness, but come on, it's a cultivation novel too lol. It's not a perfect story, but very much recommended for those looking for something in this genre. <<less

The first two-thirds were excellent! How feelings started and deepened felt organic and wasn't forced. There were also genuine moments where I laughed at the MC's schenanigans. Pretty sure the translation is AI, so the grammar and editing is smooth, though I don't know if the translator disclosed that anywhere. There are parts that got trimmed out and you're left wondering what on earth happened.

Spoiler

The Fortune Butterfly suddenly appeared out of nowhere and apparently gave them a mission to defeat a spider that also came out of nowhere??

[collapse]

The last third of the book was pretty disappointing.

Spoiler

The MC lost his spark. He became good at just about everything (except teaching, cause he's a genius and they Think Differently) --a generic and tragic silhouette with misty eyes and a forlorn figure. The author put more effort into traumatizing the male lead and giving him a yandere personality transplant. The MC became the most submissive/"devoted" partner out of guilt/love? For something that wasn't his fault. It felt really disingenuous: I felt like I was reading about a new doormat character instead of the MC. It's also frustrating because that's not how you treat that kind of trauma.

It would have been so much more fun if their cat/dog dynamic continued where they have small bickering arguments over meaningless things, but are still so cold/unaffected by everyone else.

Ironic how the author writes a book about subverting tropes like a white lotus harem, but had no problem giving us this weird yandere dynamic that feels forced? Author should have saved it for a different book or written better suited characters.

[collapse]

Despite my gripes, I would still recommend reading it because it truly has charming moments. <<less

The first 2/3 of the story is good. The plot is engaging, with interesting side characters and arcs, and there’s an organic growth between the two mains. For the remainder 1/3 of the story, I found myself skimming a bit. At this point, I felt like some points became repetitive, and the plot felt stale at times. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Still happy with the ending.

Was an absolute gem up till around the middle, hence the rating.

Somehow after a certain point it felt forced? Like the tone of voice became overly show & tell, describing things that didn't really need to be explained. It just felt out of place, somehow. Like sudden description of 'they didn't feel cold because they're cultivators' as a whole separate paragraph? Or fully expressing their inner thoughts & feelings repeatedly. Felt disconnected with how smoothly the first half flowed.

The premise was great though, with the inner demon dynamic that I've... more>> not seen before adding a lot of fun to it.

But I guess after that 'fell apart', there were some awfully convenient & fan-servicey plot points like

Spoiler

OP 'inner demon' skills—pass through walls, teleport back to host, super effective mental attacks against demonic cultivators!

Multiple secret realms that just help them get more and more OP & rich. Like suddenly gaining a lot of wealth from a random Moon Lord without much build up (if any?)

the hand holding runes marker thing (so obvious pls)

The sudden 300 year time skip just to create more trauma for ML so he can pull out the 'I wanna lock you up in my s*x dungeon (LOL) trope

[collapse]

Actually now that I think about it, I think the issue is that the general tone is very light-hearted. You know that it's gonna be a HE, and any conflict that arises are quickly resolved. There's this overt sense of gravitas added to some situations but I'm disconnected so it's difficult to take any tension seriously. Like the
Spoiler

1.5 marks butterfly thing. It was a little confusing and more 'uh ok... ' than 'omg, what do you mean by this!'

[collapse]

Kind of wished

Spoiler

That the demon overlord could sense MC in his spirit form, so some close shaves, impending hurt would make it richer.

The heaven's will thing. Mildly confusing, apparently wrecked so much havoc, but so easily resolved?? Come on, give a bigger challenge.

Building Su Baimo up so much, as a negative example of similar blessing circumstance but human greed, etc. but he's quite pathetic and just an eyesore that didn't seem to add much.

The inner demon tribulation thing... I wish there were more solid reasons why it had to happen. It felt like the MC was coerced to traverse that mental logic of 'separate first to resolve then get back together' when the 1st half's MC wouldn't do that s*upid thing

[collapse]

It has all the elements of a great xianxia novel, it's just the execution (2nd half on) felt like it was forcing the previously nicely built characters to follow certain out of their nature actions so that specific plot points can play out. I still enjoyed it though. On the fence if I would reread... maybe for the cute first half. <<less

Good slow burn? IN THIS ECONOMY? Oh my aching heart the romance was actually so good.

It's just... cute. They genuinely try to understand each other and be respectful of each other in the way that teenagers who don't know any better can. The idea of MC being the inner demon is so so fun and honestly it isn't so much enemies to lovers (as the synopsis would lead you to believe) as it is bickering kids —> besties —> awkward besties with secret crushes —> angsty besties with secret... more>> crushes —> lovers (still besties tho).

TLDR: it's a fun ride that I can definitely see myself rereading. Not too heavy, but hits in the parts it should hit. Ending arc was not what I expected but absolutely does not take away from the novel and makes sense as a development. Great overall!

Now excuse me as I go inject some insulin and curb my blood sugar levels. <<less

It's so fun. I ended up binging the mtl version (if anyone has access to the extra chapters, pls let me know).

Love the dynamics with the MC and ML, who both have a lot of character/personality. I also appreciate the author making them act their age when they start the story off as both being teens (it's also very funny seeing sm1 who is supposed to become the standard cold/stoic ML in his pre-development stage where he's still trying to learn how to be stoic lol).

I'd say the highlight of... more>> the story is the relationship b/t the MC/ML. The overarching plot/mystery regarding the system isn't extremely interesting to me but it's also doesn't get the biggest focus beyond motivating the MC to act or placing MC in his setting (tbh, even the way it gets to its resolution kind of feels like the author wasn't that interested in this part either). The side characters are cute/enjoyable, but don't get too much highlight and neither do the villains, tho the fight scenes can be interesting.

Definitely rec for ppl who love a good relationship-focused story set in a fairly typical xanxia setting. <<less

Omg this story was so cute!

Totally recommend this for people who need both the MC and ML to have brain cells, and to feel like they both actually fall in love with each other!! I've encountered so many novels in the 'transmigrate to a cultivation world and look after a book character' subgenre where even by the end I'm just not convinced that the MC actually loves the ML in the same way, rather than just giving in due to other feelings like guilt/ affection, etc.

One thing that really stood... more>> out to me (because it's bugged me so badly in other novels, even ones I liked overall) was that the MC actually improved at the skill he wanted to learn. Xiao Mo started out not being able to play the flute at all and progressed all the way to 'musical cultivation' attacks etc! And he was actually useful in battle! And the ML didn't also learn the flute and play it way better way faster than our MC for no reason! I did not realise before typing this how much it annoys me whenever an MC tries to pick up a new skill and the ML does it superhumanly well, effortlessly, and in the end MC never gets better or gives up entirely and it's just written off as one of his cute like quirks. "Oh he just CAN'T cook/sing/whatever teehee" screw that!! Let my MC GROW! Let him achieve that satisfaction!!

And I loveddd the attention paid to rehabilitating Chu Jinglan after Xiao Mo reappeared. I won't say it was realistic in any way, but compared to other novels, the amount of INTENTIONAL care Xiao Mo puts into helping Chu Jinglan is what really touched me. I'd say even compared to Mistakenly Saving the Villain (which tbh I read a while ago), I felt like Xiao Mo was genuinely helping Chu Jinglan recover because he (eventaully) got a clear understanding of Chu Jinglan's mental state, and met him where he was.

A big part of that was the author allowing Xiao Mo to realise things and change his mind about things throughout the novel. I'm definitely a dense MC enjoyer, but when Xiao Mo finally realised that Chu Jinglan loved him too? And he immediately put that into context and realised how his disappearance has effected Chu Jinglan? Chef's kiss. Delicious. I've never read a reveal so satisfying before. This novel made me realise how much emotional depth is usually missing from these kind of reveals. The MC finding out that ML loved him all along and being all "no way... we're just [insert relationship]... how can somone so great and powerful love me..." is cute and all, but damn when Xiao Mo immediately started making an exposure therapy plan for Chu Jinglan to process his PTSD response to Xiao Mo being outside his line of sight, I truly believed that they loved each other equally as much.

And I'm a sucker for a happy ending >:] <<less

The inner demon plot point was quite creative honestly. I just wish the final villain showdown was a bit more substantial. Tbh I felt like towards the end, the author just wanted to speed up the ending but at the same time dragged it out.

Aside from how the blurb just told us major spoilers and basically told off the whole story, it was still an okay book despite how it had also a lot of writing issues. But despite it, I still was able to enjoy it but by the it dropped it a third in the book as I just find it tedious and draggy.

It really had a good start and I was fairly entertained. But for a story the focused heavily on the cultivation setting, it really fails to set up... more>> a stable world building and power system. Even some basics of cultivation was not really thought out. Clearly, the author was not an expert of cultivation, or known enough to write or supplement this type of book.

The premise was great, and theit initial journey and interaction was written fairly well. But as the story stagnant in the middle and the latter part of the book, writing issues such as plot holes, convenience writing, illogical facts, and even character misprogression started to show their heads.

The cultivation part was really the most dissapointing one. It was kinda terrible to be honest, it wasn't bad but it was not decent either which really brought down the romance and the emotional part of the story. There were issues with how the author just skim things when it could have been better if it was shown instead of told. But the worse part was even if they summarised the scenes into few words, those wors were lacking in explanation about how it was possible for that to happen. For example, MC went to these area and he casually killed a beast higher than his level without explanation if that was possible or how he did it. Also with how he fought with the ML and suddenly, he a modern person trained in illusion was able to fight with the ML fairly, it was summarized yes because the author could not supply logic to it, but the worse part of that again was it wasn't convincing. Even the telling part was lacking.

Another example was when the ML won a tournament, and the author just went to the awarding part without even writing how it happened, so much for setting up the venue and the scene.

To be honest, the cultivation part was really underwhelming.

But what made me stay was the romance part. But that did not last for long, I went uninterested by it.

The ML just lost sparks after finding his feelings and the MC become cringe, narrating how close their relationship is. I found it unbearable to be told what was happening in their relationship when I could see it, what made it terrible was it wasn't really that apparent as what the MC was summarizing, I find him assuming things more than what was shown.

Then by the third of the book, it just got draggy for me. FOr someone who had already litteraly told the story progression in the blurb, the author clearly took his time. They had added a lot of side plots and side missions that only had little relevance to the story. It felt drawn out spending chapters reading their subpar adventure only for the purpose of MC getting some little memories and stuffs, which could be done in a much more simpler way, seeing that it wasn't really that a big of a deal considering the grand scheme of everything.

By the end, I just felt unsure with book and it felt like I was wasting time at this moment. The story just lost its allure and become unrewarding.

It was okay start, but it tanked later on. <<less

The inner demon setting between the MC and ML was really unique and my favourite plot point. It offered a new type of dynamic I didn't know I needed to read. The plot is focused on the relationship between the main characters, not so much on a grander scale.

There is a review by Hungry Beast mostly dissing the plot. If you have read it, let me say something. This novel is not plot focused, but it isn't as bad as the impression that review leaves. There were some things that... more>> I didn't like, but overall I recommend giving this a try. <<less

It was a wonderful read. At the start I had a difficult time understanding what was happening but I eventually found that the plot was very interesting, it was originally supposed to be just a quick read but it was so good I just had to finish it. It’s not like those transmigration stories who try to be overly comedic or overly emotional it was the perfect balance of seriousness and a few moments of lighthearted scenes. I’ve seen a few other reviews and I can’t say I agree, ... more>>
Spoiler

The ending was rushed I admit, but the characters did not necessarily become one dimensional. The way Xiao mo left him hurt him so much of course he’d become a sucker for love and go insane, it wasn’t because the author ONLY needed drama but also because of how his trust easily shattered. He planned to spend his life with Xiao mo and never even break through his cultivation but Xiao Mo in a moment of vulnerability took advantage of his trust and killed himself with his hands. Killing your beloved, who has been with you since you became crippled, when your mother died, when everyone has left him- with your hands? Who wouldn’t go insane? But that doesn’t mean Xiao mo is to blame (he had his own reasons.), but how he takes it upon himself to restore his beloved memories as a way of repayment for waiting so long and dying without even telling him shows how much he cares. Xiao mo wanted to show him that he’s back, wanted to show him that he didn’t waste 300 years being insane for nothing. Xiao mo wanted to HEAL Chu jinglan of the trauma he gave him even if it meant wasting another few years. Both protagonists were very good characters till the end.

Now that I’m thinking about it

Spoiler

The romance wasn’t necessarily out of nowhere too, the pace could be considered fast but again with their situation it was bound to be paced fast.
