Good novel without much drama. ML is a cutie and respects MC. MC is a softie and though he is portrayed as cruel and evil in the beginning, it was all for survival and revenge and once he achieved his hoal, he stopped all that. So, I really liked them both.

It's a good read if you are looking for something serious but not too serious with a lot of funny scenes in historical setting.

The Meng-Ming couple is the sweetest. A very satisfying read and there's also an alternate story/ending, the "what if...", of course I prefer the original one. The alternate story is good too but there's a lot of unanswered questions, but it's not a big deal and there's also angst which I really don't mind.

Special shout out to xiao Gao and housekeeper Qin, and to the lieutentants that are very close to General Yan! They helped the... more>> story becomes funnier and more interesting.

Last but not the least, thank you to the author for sharing this novel and to the translator/editor for making this novel possible for non-chinese reader like me. <<less

So funny, and so sweet. There's no serious plot going on for most of this, it's borderline slice of life. But I think overall that suits the character dynamic + character arc the author is showcasing here, as the MC is clearly trying to move on from court drama to a new, more relaxing life! The chemistry between the leads is amazing, they are very much not serious people (when they are together anyway), and their flirting is the best thing this has got going on honestly.

This was a rollercoaster of emotions for me, I felt so angry at times and happy at times. This novel is truly one of my favourites, all the characters are so real and amazing! Everyone has their own flaws. I read it at neondragonfly. org translations.

I loved every second of it, I’m so glad I read it, don’t be afraid to read it. Sometimes it squeezes your heart with some angst, then it sweetens your heart with some fluff.

Zhao Yelan is so cute man, he’s more tsundere and I feel like he reveals his true self more to Yan Mingting more than the emperor

In front of the emperor he acts accordingly and more falsely.

I love how they slowly start to love each other, you can see it progressing! I’m loving it!

I love how Zhao Yelan cares about how Yan Mingting thinks of him and tries to look good and tries to impress him

They’re so genuine to each other! Ugh so cute, my heart hurt when Zhao Yelan was thinking of leaving 😭

Chapter 59... when they started being more and more intimate ehehehehe

CHAPTER 61, I’ve lost all composure and I’m currently screaming in my pillow while typing this! HES SI DJEHRUVRKW. THEY’re TOO BLOODY CUTE SHEGIFVEKWBDURBEK

I don’t know how I came across this Gem of a novel. I just had to pass-by and say this was so good. Initially I too thought why is the ML clingy and forceful but hell noo. He is just another green flag bearer. He understood the MC especially his character and knew what he had to do to make him open up to the world he had once closed his heart too. He healed him without even trying a lot. This really is among one of the best BLs... more>> I’ve ever read. It will have to squeeze into my best green flag 5 danmei MLs. Anyways I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants something with a mixture of good emotions. It ain’t too angsty or too funny but just balanced well. Very Good Novel. <<less

I am so in love with this novel.

Truthfully, I have neglected it for quite long. I started reading this on November last year, but I just picked this up again in February. The reason was the first twenty chapters are kind of confusing for me. But, trust me, it got better. When I finally understood the plot and flow, the story became so interesting!

I love everyone in this novel, especially Yan Mingting. He is a perfect lover. And Zhao Yelan? He's my crush. I also like Xiao Gao and Housekeeper Qin. They are such a funny duo!

I really really love this novel. The angst, politics and fluff are really balance. The sarcasm was on point too! This is one of the best novel I've ever read. I will reread again for sure when I have spare times hihi <<less

The way this novel has become one of the my all time favourites... absolute beautiful story. LOVE the translation (thank you ms translator). Both of the main characters are so charming and precious, you end up rooting for their love throughout the whole story. I am a sucker for moderate amounts of love rivalry so I would say I quite enjoyed the little bits of jealousy from the emperor's side.

Well written story with well written characters all around.

MC is calculating, ruthless and guarded but he soft (in his way) towards people he cares about.

ML is smart enough to clash wit with the MC, and shows his heart quite smartly.

I enjoyed this novel a lot. MC, Zhao Yelan, has led a harsh life. Even though he seems sinister, he tends to put others first. This causes him to play the role of bad cop so others can be the good cop. It's a good thing that he was forced to marry ML, Yan Mingting. Although ML is a general, his heart is pure. He sees through MC's scheme and doesn't let MC mistreat himself. He dotes on MC, wanting MC to be happy.

At first I didn't wanna read this... more>> since I thought MC had loved the emperor and was wronged by him. But MC never loved the emperor and misled the emperor to think that he did.

The writing was good, with a happy ending. I read it all but only scanned the extras concerning the alternate universe extra. Alternate universe scenarios normally aren't "relevant" so I only do a look-see in case there's something worthwhile... in this case it didn't seem so.

ML had come back to the capital to investigate his father's mu*der. Although he was reported as dying in battle, he was actually poisoned. After MC and ML become closer, ML confides to MC. MC helps ML and they narrow down the suspects.

MC's parents were killed by the late emperor when he was a child. His parents were commoners and good people. They had rescued someone once but got implicated because that person had rebelled against the late emperor. After his parents died in prison, MC was branded and sold as a s*ave. The emperor was the one who bought MC.

SPOILER...

The mu*derer is actually the first prince. He used to be the crown prince and colluded with another country to poison ML's dad. He was wary of ML's family siding with the emperor (who was the third prince at that time).

it's fun. ML is incredibly charming, straightforward, and sincere. He's a good fit for the MC who's very scheming and is very used to deceits. The politics parts are quite interesting. It's quite rare to see a story between an emperor and his subject of the same age, usually the emperor will be a generation older. Here we got to see how an emperor treat his talented, loyal subject who helped him usurp the throne. Mc's reputation was bad, but his talent was undeniable. So the emperor married him into... more>> ml's family. I quite like how subtly cunning the emperor is. He knows well that MC is such a refined and fussy person, + wen and wu officials are known to not get along with each other, yet he still married MC off into ml's family (appeasing the court and the people, yet there's an obvious hint that he doesn't want MC and ML to have a happy married life), taking away most of mc's power but still be able to keep MC by his side by putting him in hanlin. Idk, I think it's kind of fun how he loves MC but not enough to choose him over the throne. <<less

Excellent story. I only removed one star because it took me waaay too long to warm up to the MC (I understand why some people stopped reading early, I think it took me 30 chapters to appreciate the MC since he stopped acting like a dick), and because the ending felt rushed. The twist villain was cheap imo since we didn't see the character that often, and the reveal was a little too obvious. As for the case of the ML father's death, I thought it was dealt with way... more>> too quickly and easily. I thought it would play a bigger part in the story, but it gets forgotten for most of the novel then comes back like when there's like, 10 chapters left. I also felt like the MC and ML bickered a bit too much. I know the "old married couple" vibes is a big part in their dynamic but I wished there was more serious and tender moments between the two.

The emperor was a nice surprise. I thought he would take the very cliche "love rival" route, but not at all. I know some readers didn't like it since it felt like a 180°, but I myself appreciate it since it's just... so tiring to see the "jealous emperor" trope. I'm glad he was much smarter and mature, realizing he was never meant to be with MC and be fine with it. Plus the ML really didn't need a serious love rival, him and the MC were jealous often enough.

Other than that, I recommend. <<less

The main leads are perfect for each other. I like the pacing and how angst in most parts but sweet. What I like about this story are how the author didnt neglect the side characters. They had attitude and made the whole story alive. Though the end was rushed but I already enjoy the first and middle which were the best part of the story. ML was such a green flag throughout the story.💕 MC was so lucky to have him as husband and partner for life.

This was so good. From the character development to the plot events to the pacing and to the translation... worthy of 5/5.

Many times while reading, I felt amazed that I could enjoy it for FREE. The quality was so good that it triggered in me the primal urge to throw money at something beautiful. (Too bad I'm currently broke.)

Definitely a story to remember. Even the side characters felt so alive.

Aside from the character development, my favorite part is how the author unveiled things to readers without having to explain... more>> anything. A superb example of "show, not tell". It made everything so engaging and it was easier to feel invested in the lives and deaths of the characters, not just the main leads but of the side characters' as well.

When you truly break it down, there isn't actually a lot of action nor intrigue in this novel. But because the execution of ideas was so good and so clean, each chapter was interesting.

The romance part was also so nicely done! <<less

Angsty but im willing to be hurt to read the sweetness and their love :") The MC's past was really too heartwrenching and im so glad that he now has the ML to stand by him and to love him. I also love how the ML does not trust rumors about the MC much but instead his own judgement.

One of the most underrated and one of the best historical danmei I've read in a while! The MC and the ML are strong in their own unique ways and are easily a power pack couple. The overall plotline is also great, nothing too complex or boring, just the perfect mix of politics, angst and love.

The translation is absolutely perfect, a big thanks to the translator for this!

A very fulfilling story, lots to laugh about, Fluffy, MC is smart and ML is witty. It doesnt have many twists, but intersting side characters... All in all it was wholesome....
