I do love the character development of MC Zhao Yelan. He started out as ruthless, cunning, and cruel, to his enemies but also to himself. The marriage and begrudgingly blossoming relationship with Yan Mingting (plus his new fam from the General camp!!) taught him to love and appreciate himself and others more.

I was kinda worried abt him disappearing and the subsequent angst that would ensue, but surprise he decided to love Yan Mingting and stay with his new found family!! Damn that reveal was amazing.

The side characters are also compelling to read. Emperor Zhao Xuan is a such well written antagonist/supporting character. I hate him as a person and love him as a character.

He has the predictable Emperor flaw of being suspicious, but overall he was a good ruler, and of course, a terrible friend/lover. I pity him because he longed for ‘Zhao Yelan’, who never truly loved him. I wanna kick him in the balls for how he treated MC despite his feelings. Zhao Xuan had a change of heart in the end but I do wonder if that stemmed from true repentance or from regrets because of his impending death? It was a shame that he died.

Also the female characters in this danmei is just delightful. And the lesbian side couple!? I would love to read a short spin-off of their story. And Gu Niannian T^T

I appreciate that the story pointed out the whole ‘killing three generations, enslaving men and prostituting women’ related to a criminal is just super f*cked up and inhumane. You can see where Gu Niannian and Zheo Yelan diverged. He never implicated the family in his revenge, but she could not let go and assassinated the Emperor for the sins of his father. Two wrongs don’t make a right but damn I get why Gu Niannian did what she did.

I like this story very much. The MC and ML's relationship progresses quite reasonably and is not too rushed. They started wary of each other, but then rely on and complement each other well, as the story goes. Their characters are also not too perfect. I like the bold, schemer, and money-loving MC. The ML is quite pushy in dragging MC to exercise and likes to provoke MC and annoy or tease him because he feels MC is too gloomy and cold towards life and others. It pokes ML's mischievousness... more>> because he wants to see the other side of MC's personality, but ML still has considerate and caring sides. MC can let go of his burdens and just be himself in front of ML. The side characters are also interesting and complement the story well. I like Gao Tan's silly personality, but nothing interesting going on with him. The extra stories are interesting, and the what-if parts are quite angsty, but I think it could be developed into its own story. <<less

Honestly, liking this novel is a matter of preference. For me pushing myself to read all the way to chapter 14 was so hard all because of the "comedy" between the MC and ML. All the other aspects were so realistic and serious but their relationship was the source of comedy here, at first it was funny until the marriage happened and all the ML does each time to win against MC is to threaten him with a sword. The banter was fine but the way he make him fo... more>> things against his wishes and humiliate him in front of other people is so frustrating! And it doesn't make sense that MC just let it go? With his personality?? I mean for some readers, they won't really take it seriously and will just find funny, harmless joke. But its frustrating to me. What others see as chemistry, I see as MC being in disadvantageous situation. Those who keep defending the general only sees it in his perspective which is how he take care of people, but does the MC want a healthy life, is he in military? ML also knows this is how he can somehow retaliate although childishly. But MC also isn't a saint (which is why I can't fathom how he's letting this happen)

Having said that, being forced to exercise wasn't really my main issue, its how he kept threatening him with a sword, and even once tied him up all night. Its so frustrating because we know the MC is powerless at that moment and it is true that he can't win in terms of physical fight. Even tho its only to make him exercise its still highlighting the power imbalance between them. So for the general, what would happen if he doesn't agree to MC's demands? Be in a separate bed, that's it.

Edit: okay after putting it down and coming back to read, I was able to push through. It was pretty good, they had character development so its like I was reading a new danmei.

I gotta mention the Emperor's character is well written. He wasn't like other 2nd ML, its actually a bit too much to call him that since he doesn't really pursue him actively. He's just consistent to his character and really written with a mentality like an emperor.

We got to feel satisfied seeing him realize that Zhao Yelan really doesn't like him without him going back to his beliefs like the usual where the guy suddenly becomes s*upid and tries to win back the MC

Cute funny wholesome, I love that the ML is not “stoic” “cold” or “emotionless”, but he’s also not cruel and twisted.

He believes in the good of the world and it’s really refreshing. He’s good at what he does which is being a general but has a hole in his brain for most else of what he does.

Love the MC too he’s smart and cunning but actually kind in his own way on the inside.

Another danmei couple with a really good and hilarious banter. The MC and ML are such a mismatched couple, but they undoubtedly have a great chemistry, with their relationship progression so subtle and natural.

It started with a capable and famous 'evil star' general and a sycophantic and ruthless minister being forced by the new emperor with an arranged marriage. They are not actually enemies, since their lives only intersected twice a few years back and they actually benefited from each other with those few interactions. But that's just... more>> it, they're basically strangers and even though they couldn't be considered enemies, that arranged marriage made them unsatisfied and they ended up 'hating' each other.

The other reviews I read said that the ML is such a bully, but I don't think it can be seen as something negative. MC is always fierce and snapped at him all the time and often acted as the superior one in the household, but ML always teased him every single chance he gets until MC got red in anger. It's a harmless teasing and I actually think their back and forth helped to diffuse the tension and ended up as a great entertainment as a reader. In my opinion, ML is actually very patient with MC and accepted every single unreasonable demands. I don't even remember the ML getting mad at MC and he's the one who's good and flexible at adjusting their relationship. I actually loved ML's energy so much. His vibe actually reminded me of Yan Xie from Po Yun, in a sense that they're both strong and capable with their field of expertise but definitely have a brain hole. They both loved to brag about their relationship with their MC in an exaggerated manner, but they're also very much madly in love with them.

The MC is a flamboyant peac*ck who cares about his appearance so much. He was often criticized with how extravagant he dressed, how luxurious he lives his life and how 'a man like him' even used fragrances like a woman (weird connotation, I know, but what can you do with a setting like this). But these way of living has a deeper reason than simple vanity. He's also feared and hated by most people as a ruthless minister who put the current emperor in the throne. But the ML is not among those people who judged him.

The ML once mentioned that he wished they got to know each other much earlier, but the MC didn't agree with that. MC said that they met at the perfect time, when his revenge with the people in his past is almost finished and the war on the ML's side is also done. That even if they met earlier, they would have grown apart with both of them having different focuses in life. That's why the plot is mostly focused on the MC and ML's relationship growth. There might be some other conflicts outside of their relationship, but it's either the aftermath of a big event that happened in the past or it's a passing predicament that served as good tool to highlight the relationship of the MC and ML more.

I had an absolute blast reading this one. Definitely recommended. The couple became one of my favorite danmei couples and this novel entered my favorite list. For those who loved historical setting with a hate to love trope, you'll definitely loved this one. <<less

The novel that got me over my reading slump! I almost couldn't put it down.

It's a light-hearted reading, the romance is good, and the banter between them is endearing with not too much, not too little drama, just the exact amount, everything narrated with a comedic undertone!

Yeah, there are villains but, surprisingly, they're not really that important. The novel is more centered on "healing" and the person you can be after the struggles of a difficult life because most of the "decisive and traumatic moments" are told in flashbacks, so the story focuses more on their aftereffects and how the characters overcome them.

There are some things plot-wise that seemed to be glossed over, forgotten midway and characters that changed personalities too suddenly but it is still good overall. As I said before, it is a light reading, for good and for bad, so the storyline is also simple and the second half isn't as good, it went from things being too dragged to things being too crammed at the end, it looked like the author wanted to end the conflicts as soon as possible and go into the couple's happy life, so the identity of the main villain and the solution of one of the biggest mysteries of the novel was quite disappointing. Regardless, because the story is a love story more than anything else, it was good for me, I also loved seeing more of the lovey-dovey couple.

I would have liked for the Emperor and the MC's relationship to have been explored deeper, I think it could've been more interesting, but towards the end, it was barely relevant. I also thought that the Emperor was going to be more relevant, considering the beginning and how the MC said the ruler was also an astute man, but after a long fight for the throne and mind games to keep his power, he just suddenly died lol I think that part of the message of the novel but couldn't help but find it funny

This novel is so good! The characters all feel very fleshed out and realistic within the plot. I especially thought that the romance was well done. Some novels, neither the readers or the characters can figure out why the main couple actually likes each other but in this novel, they get to know each other before the romance happens. Also, neither of them are just automatically good at relationships, they have to work at it.

The plot was interesting and while I wish it was more intense, the resolutions were satisfying.... more>> All in all, a good light read! <<less

Favourite!

There is enough depth to the characters to make it enjoyable. I liked the chemistry between the two leads and how they slowly warmed up to each other. The back and forth bickering is not as witty as some I've read before but still very good and funny/fluffy.

There is enough politics and backstory to keep it going and make it interesting, but it felt like the main part of it was the romance between the two, which is what I like the most, haha. Romance-led stories.

Although the historical setting/emperor aspect... more>> felt lacking in impact (like the palace intrigues/politics/power struggle did not feel like it really mattered... e.g. there was hardly any respect or power boundaries between the emperor and MC), it kind of worked for this novel's setting and tone. It made it a mostly feel-good type of smooth sailing novel (although there were also some bumps along the way, but not too serious).

The tension at certain parts was very nice, I felt dread and worry and that slight stomach tingle which is always a good indication. The fluff and dog food that comes after is also very satisfying. Didn't cry or feel angsty at some of the depressing backstories, but it was enough to get me invested in the characters.

Would definitely re-read. <<less

From the title, I thought this would be a dark and angsty epic. I was so very, very wrong. It's part slice-of-life, part short plot arcs making up the overarching story. There is some angst - MC's background is very tragic, for one, but also a lot of humour. What I particularly liked is that most danmei I read is usually tsundere gong/sweet (or at least 'normal') shou, or sometimes tsundere/tsundere or normal/normal. This is the first time I've come across golden retriever gong/tsundere shou, and I really liked the... more>> dynamic. <<less

I totally love this novel. I really like strong MC. The ML is also adorable and strong. They are match made by heaven.

I like that the side characters are very supportive. Even the emperor is somewhat likeable.

it's nice to have plenty of honest people as civil officials in this kind of setting

the plot, the MC, the ml:

it has nice character developments, has great timing on when to insert the back stories. And the back stories may have a bit of angst, but not that much. Just enough to sting but will then make you recover.

i really like smart, black bellied, MCs. As well as those who can kill without twitching. 😅 the ML is like a giant playful dog. While the MC is like a giant delicate, moody cat. Hehe.

this novel made me skip some run days and study times. <<less

Loved the storyline... loved the dynamics between the MC and the ML.... they were a power couple... loved their relationship... loved the story with a few twists in between... although I would say the last 6 extras showcasing a parallel timeframe, I can see our MC doing it and I don't blame him... but still the ML went through hell... ultimately its HEA so its fine.. the translation by Neon Dragonfly is awesome... thanking the author and the translator for bringimg us tis piece of gem💎🙏.

So good.. The alternative ending is also good, the story was good, author can make such intense change laugh cry and smile the crying part is worth it.. Bcs it's refreshing it's not abusive it's more like pain that needed to saw all good things together, don't be afraid to cry when u read this novel.. I swear it's worth it

The first 10 or so chapters’ wordbuilding is a bit confusing, but afterward the story is well-written albeit a bit confused for me sometime. I didn’t understand MC’s way of living at first, not until almost at the half of story. This has ML as Golden retriever and MC as black-cat. They are very cute together. I just like that they decided to support and cherish each other for until the end. 4.5/5⭐️

Great novel with very interesting, 3d characters and world development. My only gripe is the alternative ending extras; when we've already read the perfect ending, this sadder, less satisfying ending was a bit of a disappointing way to leave the beautiful world the author created.

However, the main story and all the other extras were perfect. I fell in love with the characters, especially the MC. He's such an interesting personality - conniving and distrustful, cruel yet not abusive, ambitious yet happy to step down. The ML was a bit of... more>> a puppy-dog figure, but in a satisfying way. I love the slow, realistic relationship development between the two characters. You see how they slowly win each other over - first as strategic partners, and then as romantic ones. It's almost a perfect foil for the MC and the emporer if the emporer wasn't restricted by his responsibility to the country.

Another part I found satisfyingly realistic was how difficult it was for the two to start having satisfying physical relationships. It's funny how many romances portray interc**rse as the pinnacle of relationship development, and as a physical manifestion of the characters' love. It works perfectly and both are left mind blown on the first attempt. I think the way this novel portrays first times provides a more realistic alternative. It can be awkward, unequally satisfying, and confusing. If it's not perfect at first, that says nothing about the strength of the love or the relationship. If the partners care for each other, they'll try and improve so that it's satisfying for both people.

Finally, the mystery and plot in this novel is well-paced, and the slow reveal of back story mimics how people get to know each other in real life. <<less

I loved it so much. The story is so engaging & fast paced. Also the MC & mls development of their relationship was so steady & natural. Loved how they both naturally co-existed with totally different personalities. (I hope y'all get what im saying, im very bad at English, sorry!)

One of the best historical Cnovel I've read. Totally recommended.

Very good. I'm very fond of both MC and ml. Although MC softens, he won't have a dramatic change of personality. ML is just one big dog in need of affection and attention.

Nothing too overly dramatic for the sake of dog blood.

MC and ML🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️😘😘😘😘😘 they are the one of the best, if not THE best BL couple I ever read!

Supporting characters are also great! not boring side stories at all.

... more>> in my opinion Emperor isn't bad. he didn't want to send MC to a far away city and he definitely didn't want to kill him! so came up with the marriage.

I think emperor always loved MC. but as emperor himself said he's selfish. he could never love someone enough to give up his Throne. emperor cares for MC. he never hurt him.

now back to MC and ML. the way they fell in love🥰 I LOVE ml's clingy behavior! ML melted our MC's cold heart to the point, spoiler.......

Light novels. In the early stages the conflict looks serious but as the plot progresses it is resolved lightly and it is fun to read because it warms the heart. MC is not a good person but not completely bad, ML and MC are two opposite people but compatible. I think their interaction is quite realistic between partners, one of them doesn't fully give in and change habits for the sake of the other but makes compromises to live together. A novel that I will probably read again and again.

i LOVED seeing the relationship between MC and ML develop as yelan slowly falls in love with yan mingting. I really liked how yan mingting brought yelan's true self back. Deep inside yelan is actually kind-hearted, but became how he is now (cold/ruthless) because of the things he went through in the past.

the first half of this novel really hooked me in, I love the dynamic of the MC and ml

gave 4 stars because the end of the novel felt kind of rushed (?) felt like the author lowkey got... more>> bored and kinda just added things but overall, a cute story ! <<less
