Zhao Yelan is supposed to be so clever but lacks basic knowledge about martial affairs. For instance, threatening a General with a dagger when you're not strong? Pfft. And not learning rope escape techniques? He is a miserable petty lord.

It's nice this story has Zhao Yelan having friends for the first time.

Zhao Yelan appears too mean spirited and petty.

Yan Mingting is very much a meng puppy.

The side characters are well-developed.

The non-plot asides can be comedic and hilarious. But these seem out-of-sync with the overall theme.

There is too much tell than show.

Hoo! The Extra 12 'Faking Death' alternative timeline is a much better story than the real one. However the real story is much more pleasant to all good guys concerned. Rating additional star for the 'Faking Death' Extra. <<less

I haven't written a review in English before, but this is one of my favorites, so here we go.

First of all, I enjoyed this a lot, but the first parts are kind of slice of life, and it took me about 20 or 30 chapters to become invested in the story. Contrary to some reviews, I found the second part of the novel better. The plot thickens, you can see more of the couple's chemistry, and the side characters' parts are wholesome. I've been reading danmei for a few years,... more>> but lately, it's been hard to find novels that suit my taste. Thanks to some of the reviewers, I decided to try this danmei and found this gem.

While I expected the novel to be longer, the pacing is quite good. My only problem would be the arc about the ML's father's death. I wish the author would expand on the mystery a bit more (I guess that's also because I like mystery/mu*der stories). But since the focus of the novel is on the couple's relationship, it's understandable.

I don't know if it's because I'm a sensitive person, but they brought me to tears multiple times. I can't describe in words how much they really mean to me. I laughed and cried with them along the journey, and it's been an enjoyable ride. And now, I don't know what to do with my life anymore.

(Rereading it again, I noticed little things that I didn't catch the first time. I also just realized the author covered most of my favorite tropes too. They are my safe place for a reason. And I think I totally get what user AsteriaHenituse was trying to say) <<less

I hoped that the emperor stays alive. He at least tried his best to be a good emperor. In the beginning I might have disagree with myself now but although he got jealous of MC and ML relationship, he did not harm them by any means. He accepted that MC never liked him and moved on, even granting him a "death escape card" to ensure he will not be harmed.

Highly recommended. Romance at the forefront, with two very different but equally endearing leads. MC is a fussy, money loving, grouchy yet elegant big spender with expensive tastes official/scholar of mysterious background. ML is a simple living, insightful, straightforward and mischievous General from a great but almost entirely perished family that has spent most of his life fighting wars in the north border. Battles and political intrigue are quickly resolved, since the focus is on the marriage and relationship between the leads, and the story starts after the MC has... more>> already succeeded in making the unfavored third prince the new emperor. Great side characters too with their own ambitions and resolve, each deserving their own happy endings. Housekeeper Qin and Xiao Gao provide endless comedy, but my heart goes out to Gu Niaoniao who is basically a female version of the MC, tragic but enduring. <<less

Amazing!!!!! It was a wonderful story... nothing was dragged on for too long, no messy triangle, backstory were a bit vague but wonderful nevertheless

It was one of the Best thing I have ever read without being a Fantasy Novel.

The Plot flowing naturally. All the characters so Entertaining and so alive.

Even with the Intense or Emotional scenes, there's always someone who lighted up the situation.

... more>> And even the Emotional or Intense scenes alone that doesn't get immediate light up, it was so well written we feel the Heartaches without any character nor the author exaggerating anything.

The characters' feelings was also on point it was Soooooooooooooo Goooooooooood!!!

The author clearly know how to write a story where the characters feels alive as if they're the one who actually have decision and not the author. It's that good !

The story is Wholesome it's Heavenly Good!

It's Truly Absolutely WORTH YOUR TIME so do give it a try!!!

I loved this story so much more than I expected to. There was a little world building in the beginning enough to get you interested in the world that these characters lived in. There wasn't too many politics, and the storyline wasn't too complicated.

SPOILERS - hopefully these tidbits entice you to read the story

    • The MC has a complicated past - he helped the 3rd prince become the current Emperor. He basically does all the dirty work for the Emperor and everyone hates him instead.
    • At the end of the war the Emperor forces the MC to marry the ML and kicks him out of his political position in the palace. It's never clear why the Emperor does this? Although it seems on the surface that he's done this to take all the power he had away from him. It's mentioned several times in the story that the Emperor secretly feared the MC for everything that he did to put him in the Emperor's seat
    • The ML is willing to do whatever the Emperor orders him to do. As time passes between the ML and the MC, they both catch feelings for each other
    • The MC end up falling deeply in love with the ML no matter how much he didn't want to.
    • There is never any explicitly described snu snu scenes HOWEVER I think this book does an amazing job at describing the love making like poetry.
    • The main story is about the ML and the MC falling in love with each other in the middle of this world, where politics and military decisions have a deep affect on their relationship.
I loved the main story ending and the extras of course polished the story beautifully. The last six extras are an alternate universe story of the main CP. Both timelines (the main story timeline and the alternate universe timeline) have a happy ending for the main CP. I think what that I really liked about the story is that not only does it mean CP have a happy ending but throughout the story the author does a really good job explaining why the MC did things the way he did, and that in actuality, he wasn't a cruel cold evil person everyone made him out to me. As readers we get to experience this slowly through the ML POV.

What an adorable pair. They have bumpy start, very different personalities, different backgrounds, different lifestyle, but they gradually open up and support each other. The MC is amazing, the ML is so smitten and doting.

The conflict and politics are not that much, so it's still a quite light read.

I love MC and ML so much. The unconditional love, how opposites attract, the acceptance, I love it all.

The pacing was perfect and the extras tied everything together in a neat bundle. Thank you to the author for closure and thank you to the translator for translating this work and allowing all the feelings to come across.

My favorite line in the entire novel was when the ML, Yan Mingting, said this to the MC, Zhao Yelan:

Like, wow... danmei men are out here waiting 800 years for their beloved, going against the entire cultivation world for love, wishing for a good present life with their beloved but also praying to meet earlier in their next life to care for each other faster, and in fact it’s better to meet in their previous life to have more time together. Lines like this are really touching.

I highly highly HIGHLY recommend this novel! Thoroughly enjoyed it and would add it to my recommended piles. It’s a beautiful black bellied shou x puppy dog show off gong!

This is a perfect mix of drama, romance and comedy, packed into the most perfectly paced plot. Best of all, the little snippet in the summary actually happened!

The story is about the shou who has had a miserable life and finally standing in a position of power but still has to put on a front to survive. He was married off... more>> to the gong because of some ominous omen and because the emperor wanted to restrain him. At first, it was a rocky relationship but after a whirlwind of comedic interactions, both parties unknowingly fell in love. No angst in terms of their romance journey. Their past and scars slowly unravels and they slowly out their trust in each other and the shou finally gets to be himself and put way his thorns. Just when you think the story is about to end, you’d realise that it’s only chapter 50 and you’re only half way through! More stuff happened, corruption and natural disasters occurred, rebellions are plot, angsty moments happened and there’s even a plot twist! Then, it all comes together on a sweet and satisfying note.

The drama is good drama yet not too overtly complicated or twisty that you can’t understand. The MC (shou) is a calculative, black bellied person but that’s because it’s his only known way to survive. Most of the calculative plot lines occurs in the first half of the novel. Then comes the romance, not the overtly sweet fluff but legit quality romance and honestly one of my fave couple interactions! The ML just has a hilariously active imagination and enjoys throwing dog food everywhere! They are just perfect together!

The side characters are all great! There’s the adorably dumb little servant that the MC has, the lovable steward of the general’s mansion, the number 1 dandy of the capital, the heroic female lieutenant under the gong’s army, other lieutenants that are constantly fed dog food, other smart and interesting female characters etc! And in the extras, we got to know what happened in their lives.

So, if you enjoy drama and romance of the historical genre, this is a definite must read for you!! Enjoy! <<less

3.5/5 - Was surprised at how fluffy and domestic this novel turned out!

Most of the negative comments I read about are due to the ML but I don't think he was a bully at all! The most he did was force MC to exercise and threaten him with his sword when he was being unreasonably disagreeable early in the story when they just started living together due to the marriage decree but other than that he was totally hen-pecked by the MC when he started having feelings for him.

I just... more>> found the ML a bit too unreasonably jealous at times. It's nothing really serious though and he just mopes it off. Sometimes with the way the story is written, I end up imagining chibi character lol. He's actually really sweet and likes to pamper the MC and make grand gestures of affection.

Overall though, I can say I did enjoy this novel. I do tend to like stories that don't have very heavy themes and I'd recommend this to readers who like lots of fluff and domestic scenarios in their novels. I also liked the catty MC and labrador ML's personality and dynamic, and the wide cast of side characters - yes, there are various types of female characters as well, including a lesbian couple!

My only real gripe is that there was probably TOO much fluff after the (very satisfyingly written) mutual confession, to the point that it really felt more like a historical slice of life. There aren't any major threats to the CP's relationship or difficult challenges that they need to face. This isn't to say there aren't ANY, but any problem or challenge that the CP face is written in such a way that they don't seem too grave.

Simply put, I think the author is good at writing scenarios and interactions between the CP, but the writing when it comes to "plot-related" scenes and events just falls flat. A lot of it just gets glossed over. For example,

the ML, being a general, eventually goes off to war. The CP are separated for a shot time and there's also the threat that the ML might actually die in battle and never return. The war is smooth-sailing from the get-go though and the ML writes that he'll be returning home soon. The twist is that even though he returned from war, he's actually slowly dying form poison.

This could have been a really emotional and engaging arc, but it falls flat because the execution was done poorly. The story beats weren't given enough length and weight.

I also have a minor gripe regarding how the emperor was written

as a red-herring villain. It's quite obvious very early on that the emperor is the 2nd ML and he appears a bit jealous towards the ML but he never felt truly threatening because he does absolutely nothing antagonistic towards the CP. The author also seems to have intended for readers to suspect he may have poisoned the ML's father early on in the novel, but because the emperor was such a non-participant in the plot for most of the novel, his threat level was practically close to 0 and the plot twist at the end that his brother was actually the culprit falls really flat.

I wish he would have been even just a little bit antagonistic but the author seems to be allergic to writing conflict.

In other words, the parts in the novel that aren't fluff felt a bit rushed. However, the premise did have potential, but the execution was a bit lacking. Despite all that, I still did find the novel enjoyable and satisfying enough. Read it for the fluff, not the plot. <<less

This is a good and fluffy read! There’s tons of fluff here, especially the extras. It’s a typical hard hearted MC bearing a bad reputation, but ah a very astute, and tender heart general melts away our MC hard shell. Love all the bickering between them, all the comedies in a drama, political background, its makes a very good drama series. Every chapters I laugh alots but also some tears. It’s really good read. Highly recommend. Thank you

Historical, comedy, politics

I love historical novels and I like that this one has a veneer of comedy while underneath is a complex plot with some difficult topics. The couple is sweet and evenly matched in a fun way. I also surprisingly liked the hidden layers in the relationship between the MC and the emperor. Great story and would love to read more like it.

The story is well written and well translated. The couple is really funny at first and you pick up on their small affections for each other before they admit their feelings. After they confirm their relationship it’s so sweet. We get to see MC and ML heal and find closure. A wonderful story.
