Lin Qiao transmigrated into a period novel she had only heard about from a friend, without even remembering the male lead’s name. As the mismatched cannon fodder female supporting character, the male lead married her only to gain the freedom to do business locally, exchanging marital freedom for career freedom. Once the male lead’s career succeeded, she made herself universally disliked, ending in a bleak divorce.

Lin Qiao thought that this was too… too good to be true!

She had food and drink, didn’t have to fulfill marital duties, and received a hefty alimony. Why not marry, instead of waiting to be sold by her uncle and aunt?

On the day of the formal blind date, the tall, handsome man in uniform sat upright with a stern face, looking more like he was in a war room meeting than on a blind date. But he handed over his salary card and passbook. Lin Qiao accepted them with relief, just waiting for her husband to propose a divorce.

In the first year of marriage, she rubbed her sore waist, feeling something was off. In the second year of marriage, she noticed the additional stars on the man’s shoulders, feeling even more off…

One day, the man’s eldest nephew got drunk at her house, crying and regretting pushing this arranged marriage onto him. The man, peeling shrimp for her, glanced over, and the nephew instantly sobered up, his face turning pale with fear. Only then did Lin Qiao realize that she hadn’t married the male lead, but the male lead’s cold-faced uncle!

No wonder she was already pregnant, and he still hadn’t mentioned divorce!!

Started amazingly but the summary didnt match the timeline of when she figures it out. At ch 68, the FL becomes unconvincing about why she distances herself after all the character impression I had. She becomes mildly unreasonable (or naybe it's the writing of her reasonings because she makes a point but how she gets there and how she treats him disconnects.) ... more>>
Spoiler

Ironically, the author repeatedly used the phrase like "if you dont compare, you dont know" to lift her teaching style and how her husband treats her... which also made me compare how she treats him. Sure, she helped his childhood investigation but everytime, it was him communicating with her. In terms of their actual relationship, it was always him making the effort despite the narrative saying "ok sure lets try this" and then suddenly it's "she didnt come here for love". And then the author really imposed "women empowerment, dont need men"... Like... The romance between them felt so onesided as if it would skin her alive to make "compromises" and consider those as compromises. Idk it just felt so dead after the confession and only the mystery about the childhood friend was interesting. The childhood AU is even weirder personally.

It's a very slow porridge novel with some interesting addition to the genre. The FL's life path is different to the usual and the relationship is on the practical side with the ML taking an interest first, and their s*xual dynamic is very fresh and new. There are some misunderstandings that never get resolved even tho it would've been super funny if they were

- yeah I'm talking about ML thinking FL reads risky novels, it would've been super funny to see him find out he was super wrong.-

Nice story with clever and proactive female lead. Lin Qiao is transmigrated in a moment her uncle and aunt intended to sell her to divorced man who abounded his wife because she given birth to girls. Naturally not impressed with his character traits she decided to go to Ji family to ask if betrothal is still valid. From her impression male protagonist at least of decent character. There's uncle and nephew around the same age, and so she not sure who is supposed protagonist. She first met Ji Duo, uncle,... more>> and had very nice impression of him, and so she decided that he is protagonist. I have suspicions that she blatantly plaing favorites. There's also reason why her greedy uncle and aunt didn't consider betrothal, it's explained in chapter 10 or so.

It's very nice book that not deserving such low ratings. So I suggest you give it a try and decide for yourself.

So points - Lin Qiao and Ji Duo have very nice impression about each other. Through circumstances they had bit of time to spend together and so to know each other better. It's 11 chapter and still no marriage, so as you can see they married each other not after one meeting, but after spending some time together and properly considering each other as future spouse. <<less

Simple yet enough to satisfied me as reader, the synopsis is a bit misled lmao, still we get to see those scene. This story is focus om mc-ML romance dynamic with MC career as teacher and researcher. This story is enjoyable to read but the romance drama between mc-ML for me left a little bit of bad taste ... more>>

actually it just how is it supposed to be, with misunderstanding and how ML and his family way to atc they take every consideration but the thing is our MC is not people in that era, she know why but in our modern view ml's family doing are disappointing, we also see why MC feel like this bcs she care about ml, but maybe is just me but sometimes I can feel our ML indeed fall more rather than our MC, make me feel a bit sorry, and at the same time no bcs he know he deserved it (it's my problem but hey they got better)

I love how they (mc-ml) progress together, as author say ''how many people find perfect someone?'' Both are not perfect may give u urge to put them into one table and told them to talk, both are have their own way to think tho they give same answer to solved a problem, a good read! Personal rating 4.1 <<less

It’s a 4.5

It’s such a nice story. Albeit the leads are a bit cold to each other because of the circumstances, it add on to the romance because when it happens it’s sweet. It’s a marriage first and love later kind of story. But besides romance, the novel offers more emotions in terms of human relationships.

This story is very heartwarming. The female lead is independent, opinionated and clever. Male lead is the seasoned veteran military official. He is responsible, clear headed and from some readers pov not like ideal ml, like non ideal lover. The marriage is non ideal marriage where FL has almost no expectations from ML. FL handles marriage like official business like manner where our Clear headed male lead thinks is good at start but later try to change dynamics of their relationship. FL thinks that they will eventually divorce so she... more>> didn't get attach to him at start but later ML moves her heart. Worth the read. <<less

If you are a fan of independent, quick-witted FLs, then this is for you!

It's not very overtly romance driven, the focus is more on how the FL overcomes various obstacles and avoids becoming trapped by the original storyline.

FL may seem very OP sometimes, but she does use her modern-era knowledge to her and others' benefit. I really appreciate the chemistry knowledge in the book (author must be a Chem major) and the translator / author's notes regarding relevant info about Chinese history. FL tries to make the most out... more>> of her situation and I like that she did reciprocate intimacy and playful banter with the ML

Romance is a slow build, showing what a stable marriage partnership arising from arranged marriage could be. The ML at first seems very stoic and not outwardly affectionate but he slowly grows to show more of his affections through his actions throughout the story. He is a very green flag most of the time. <<less

Mild but okay.

As a slice-of-life, it perfectly portrayed humans living their day-to-day, their struggles, and hope for a better future. Its realistic enough that makes you think that despite everything and disappointing things whether you have expectations or not, there are still good people and life goes on.

Side-characters are flat but they're progressive. They have their own settings but their appeal is plain.

As a romance story, FL's romance genes is almost dead. She grew up in an environment where there is no positive example of that. And ML's marriage sense... more>> is also as good as dead. Bro literally couldn't be bothered with anything until he started questioning their disconnection. But they're both incredibly good and practical people; they recognize boundaries, mutual respect and support (as a cooperative partner that is) . But if you want to feel thrilled, laugh, and giggle then—Sorry, no. This is too incredibly real mild. There is no sweetness at all not until the last minute. Or more like none, because this freakin' pair has communication issues seemingly straightforward but wouldn't speak about core topics. The writing made it look like tacit understanding could solve everything! They're too short on words!

I mean like, did you know you're wife initially treat you as a bed buddy? Did you know that your husband is the perfect type for chasing crematorium tropes? What are you plans for you two together? Can you two stop trying to accommodate each other but instead treat each other as the half of you as a person? We're not expecting something incredibly romantic but like, get you two something to spend time on? Align your hobbies and interest? Give each other gifts, the practical type?

Anyway, they're living their lives and contented. I mean if I were in this type of marriage, I think its better to negotiate for a roommate to pretend as my husband to get rid of nasty relatives. I mean I don't need to register my marriage for that and burden another family. If I knew myself and I know I couldn't fully take responsibility on a marriage to just end it with a divorce, negotiation is the best choice. Get rid of the guilt and forced responsibility on both sides. If the law was better on that period, I could either threaten or, if it doesn't work, accuse such relatives with ab*se and extortion. Why is our practical and intelligent FL didn't think of that?

Guess author really want to lean into drama. That's just my opinion tho.

(It didn't helped me with my escapism 😭!) <<less

Such a surprisingly good read. FL finds herself in a book and is determined to make her fate better. Because she doesn’t know who her “baby kiss” future husband is, she takes the first one offered and begins to live the life she wants. She doesn’t have a great EQ when it come to men but she has a lot of self respect. The author does spend a lot of time with smexy time within marriage so things aren’t totally pristine. I really enjoyed this story of life in a... more>> changing historical period. I actually worked for a collegiate program exchanging Chinese college students with western universities at that time - today I realize how much studying I would have been doing! Yikes! <<less
