After the Disabled God of War Became My Concubine

According to popular legend, the war god of Da Liang Huo Wujiu was once captured by the enemy country. His meridians were severed and both his legs broken before he was thrown into prison. In order to humiliate him, that dissolute ruler even gifted him to his cutsleeve brother as a concubine.

General Huo suffered a great deal of humiliation and insult. He bided his time for three years before the cicada shed his skin and he escaped back to Da Jing. After treating his crippled legs, he led his army in three months to storm the enemy’s capital, slaughter its emperor, raze its capital, and finally beheaded that garbage cutsleeve, hanging his head on the city walls for three whole years.

Since then, the world has been united.

——

Jiang Suizhou, a history department graduate advisor at a certain university, received a dissertation which used these unofficial histories of Huo Wujiu as their basis, and criticized the student to no end.

When he opened his eyes again, he had transmigrated into that cutsleeve prince from the stories.

There were lanterns and colorful decorations everywhere. A servant came, sending word that the disabled general of the enemy state had already entered the prince’s manor in his wedding sedan.

Facing down General Huo, who had been tortured to the verge of death, dressed in red wedding clothes, glaring balefully, Jiang Suizhou only then knew – these wild stories could also come true.

And cause him to be beheaded for public display, his head hung on the city walls for three years.

Jiang Suizhou’s only option was to provide for General Huo well.

The overt and covert attacks of the imperial court, the witless ruler’s every possible humiliations — he grit his teeth and absorbed it all, all in the hopes that in three years time, he could but keep this head of his.

Of course, he didn’t dare to even dream of asking this 9 ci* tall “concubine” to actually serve him.

However, before the three years was up, General Huo’s legs actually healed on their own.

Not only did he slaughter the useless ruler and unified the country, but he also forcefully blocked him in the room and insisted on fulfilling his duty as “concubine.”

The main plot and steady with bits of slice of life here and there, but the romance plot is so slow, so slow... I'm used to couples getting together as around chapter 50s till 80s, but this one waited till 160s!! I don't know who put 'Yaoi' tag here, but their interaction is more of a shounen ai. Even those with 'shounen ai' tags have more spark than this!

I love this story so much. Will leave a full review when I'm done!

This is like How to Survive as a Villain except with an even more lovable couple. Both ML and MC are pretty quick to realize their feelings once they start developing and the mutual pining is top notch. It's a slow burn but my god is the burn satisfying! I never felt like it was dragging on too long, there were definitely enough subtle moments between the two to keep me entertained.

PLEASE IT'S SO GOOD! Wholesome ASF!!! Nothing ever feels rushed and even the misunderstandings never lasts long enough to become a headache. 10/10

I finished it all in two days. I read the MTL and even if the texts hurt my brain, it still didn't stop me from loving the whole story.

The couple are healthy and sweet and their progression are so natural and pure than every time they both do something sweet for each other you cannot help but melt together with them.

I remember reading this back in 2023 and... more>> leaving it to let the translation finish but it's still not completed, and so I had resorted to MTL instead. But it wasn't all that bad.

It's a very good read. I feel so satisfied with the ending that I feel like I will sit and cry in loneliness for quite some time as I think back to those two lovebirds. <<less

"All that filled his vision now was his beloved. All he felt was that Jiang Suizhou's smile was beautiful." OH MY GOD. THIS WAS SO GOOD.

First off when you see the title it seems like it's gonna be 18+ and like a really toxic non-consensual relationship so I was afraid to start this but it's 100% not. The main character is an adult guy who is actually mature and thinks through things. Don't get me wrong I like the comedic aspect of the naive and oblivious MC but it was... more>> nice to read someone who actually thought through things. ALSO THE TENSION BETWEEN THEM OMG. Like even in the beginning when they were wary of each other they still had some tension. I also liked how the MC was a history professor, I think that also helped with his more mature characterization. AND THE JEALOUSY SCENES AHH, and the pining. I loved it and I thought they were both so cute. I liked how their relationship wasn't completely based on some misunderstandings that could be solved with talking for a minute, it really made them come to life. I loved Huo Wujiu (the main lead), like he is SO FINE. And he doesn't let his disability hinder him at all. Speaking of the disability part, I always enjoy reading novels that have some diversity to them, whether it's a character in a wheelchair or being deaf, it's a good change. AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON HOW WUJIU TREATS SUIZHOU. GOD. He was so down bad for him. I loved how even though it was looked down upon, Wujiu would also call the MC his wife and make it known that they were in love. Near the end, it did get a little boring but of course, it's my fault cause I got busy and couldn't read which always kills my motivation. The last 20ish chapters are tying up the political ends. The political aspect of this novel wasn't bad, I don't really care about the specifics and stuff so I didn't pay THAT much attention to it but it was fairly understandable. The main character was so cute when he was pretending to be the original owner who was cruel and a spoiled prince but always had some softness in his eyes. He just can't be rude to his lover 😭💔 The villains were also pretty cut and dry, I didn't really care about them. And I feel like the conflict was resolved pretty quickly, but I enjoyed how they had sad aspects of their life, I sometimes felt bad for them. Especially the emperor being abandoned by his uncle when all he wanted was to be loved.

One complaint I had though was the translations, which isn't the author's fault but when I read this, the translator was OBSESSED with cutting up each chapter into 2 or 3 parts and waiting a long time in between each so readers would get desperate and pay money. Like don't get me wrong I appreciate all the effort translators make and they need to be compensated but cmon it's like money-grabbing atp. Like they would take a month just to upload 1/3rd of a chapter, so around chapters 90-123 I had to read the mtls and i've never read mtls before so it was a little difficult. I also would've liked more information about the transmigration. Why did the character get sent back in history?? Did the changes he made have a butterfly effect on the future? But yeah, I really recommend this, I'm sure it's not for everyone but as someone who loves romance and history, this was really good! <<less

read as far as I could on the human translation and then swapped to the MTL, which was pretty easy to read.

the relationship between the main characters is sweet, and there’s a good balance between plot and romance. The schemes in the court are interesting, but not too complex or out there. In general it’s a low stress story that I enjoyed a lot.

there’s not a lot of images of the main characters that I could find so it took me a little while to decide how they looked in... more>> my head haha

overall i’d recommend it :) <<less

This story is perfect!

The romance is completely natural and wholesome, the two characters' interaction is so cute and sweet that it makes my eyes light up.

In addition to the healthy and super cute romance, the background story is also very good, it's not a fancy story full of twists, but a simple story with one or another surprising factor, but it's still very good to follow.

The reading is light, easy to understand, and the translation is simply wonderful!!

If you haven't read it yet, please don't waste time and start now!!!

A decent historical novel with simple and straight forward plot. Although it's quite simple and mainly focuses on main leads, I cannot stop reading this. This is cute, heartwarming and slow burn romance. This novel is for you if you are more interested in romance without much political intrigue.

The first thing to note: the translated chapters seem to be labeled as whole chapters but are actually cut into parts- I only realized this when I tried to MTL on chapter 80 only to be thrown into a completely different setting/situation because the translation was actually only on chapter 40. It's not a big deal, but if you're holding out on reading because it seems like the translation is almost complete... it's not. I did find the entire MTL on wattpad, though, and it's pretty easy to read.

I'm technically... more>> dropping this at 106, but that's because the story has hit all the plot points that I'm really interested in and... MTL'ing really is kind of headache inducing in large amounts. I did read the extras, though, and I'm glad I did. It actually explained a bit of the stuff I skipped! And it also made me realize that the personality of the ML is basically like a mafia boss and I love it.

A couple of points:

  • There is very little h*mophobia/misogyny in this (none that I can remember aside from some lines from the bad guys) and it's very surprising considering the time period and the setting in general
  • No OP'ness from the MC despite being (reborn? transmigrated? reincarnated? the tags say transmigrated), though he apparently has a resting bit*h face that makes him a good 'actor'
  • No harem bullshit! There's some 'drama', but since we can see MC's side and know what's going on it's not that stressful.
Spoiler

the one scene of the officials trying to make MC take female concubines to have heirs ends with the ML forcing them to officiate his and MCs wedding instead

[collapse]

  • There isn't even a whiff of betrayal in this (can you tell I'm annoyed by power hungry/scheming love interests that only realize their mistakes after they've made them?)
I'm glad I read this. <<less

I swore I wouldn't start this until after it was completely translated but dammit I have zero self-control. And now I suffer the consequences😭 the slow burn is so delicious and the tension between them is *chef's kiss*

EDIT: I couldn't resist and ended up reading the mtl which was surprisingly readable and HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS 😭😭😭♥️♥️♥️ definitely coming back to this once it's completed. Something really good to reread

Also note to self: MTL is missing the last 11 extras 😭

EDIT [Jan.6, 2025]: This is one of the best... more>> gifts for the New Year to myself lol. I finally got to reread after all the extras have been completely translated. THIS is still hands down one of The Best transmigration BL historical romance I've read. Just for the MC and ML, how their relationship bloomed, the s*xual tension, and the Extras 😭😭😭 I squealed for the one straight couple hinted at, at the end of the story, finally getting their ship sailing at the short but SWEET extra.

I'm coming back after another year or 2yrs to reread ❤️ <<less

I read the raws. This story was pretty enjoyable. It has a plot that isn't overly complicated and it was solved pretty easily, which I don't mind. There's not too much drama nor overly complicated entanglements. The reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars is because of some loose ends.

I mean, the main story did end, but it was never explained how MC suddenly transmigrated and what the consequences of him transmigrating would bring to his own world, if any. Not every transmigration novel needs an explanation about... more>> this, but the circumstances of this MC's transmigration in this novel actually open up the question but it was never answered.

I would've also liked for more details in the extras of how things would turn out after things settled down. Besides, the story was hinting at the possibility of another couple (straight), but it was never mentioned again. I didn't need full detail on it, I just wanted to know if anything came of it. One brief mention would've sufficed, but I guess the author completely forgot about it. <<less

Overall, this is a good novel although the characters drive more than the plot. I was convinced enough to read the original from the get-go. It is quite simple and I finished it quickly.

Plot:

It is a straightforward novel with like two ounces of politics. Not much world-building, drives straight to the point and it is a comforting read before exams. It has its fair share of court and palace drama. However plot armor just comes in most of the time. Realistic? No. Definitely not. Everything is toned down by a... more>> lot even they are doing things quite on a big scale as in government-politics y'know. But some parts really big-brained me.

Spoiler

when they mentioned that the 2 male concubines the original kept were actually advisors! Or helping hands. But either way it is a brilliant way to a keep a talented male individual if the ball is not in your court and people may attempt to siphon your power by removing ministers who support you.

[collapse]

Characters:

It's basically the reason why I read. I love the dynamics, the romance is well-paced (for me) and the side characters are quite well-fleshed out, even the main antagonist, until the last part where... as the other comment pointed out- some of them were forgotten. (And I went, where did they go?)

The two leads review:

I love the MC. Jiang Suizhou. He's cute and quite adaptable to situations I would cry myself in. He's realistic, as in he does make reasonable calculations and one can relate to him quite well. He really does grow to adapt to what he's thrown in.

Next the ML, Huo WuJiu. He's incarnation of a plot armor the type that you will grow to like afterwards because I'm eating sweets at the end of novel. I just love him and Jiang Suizhou's antics together. He definitely leaks martial prowess and he does grow as a character (emotionally) !

Overall:

4.5/5

Because two-thirds was great! The side stories included were very sweet. I ate a lot of sweets towards the end, but in return I didn't get an adrenaline rush as I did earlier and that everything seems to be solved at a flick of a finger. Some characters were forgotten but all in all, still fleshed out. Ending was a bit of a rush but still, it was sweet.

All in all. Please do read. I enjoyed the trip! Thank you for translating the novel too, translator-san! It's because of this I actually went to binge read XD <<less

Like another reviewer said, it's been quite a while since I wrote anything in this review area. However, I just wanted to state that this book has made me 'speed read' like I haven't done in MONTHS... I didn't get bored once and especially the romance is so incredibly heartfelt and tender. The characters are very much alive and this is noticeable in every single plot point. They don't just experience events in a book but make everything worth reading.

Hence, don't hesitate to read this as fast as you can!!

Oh,... more>> and what the reviewer below me stated about the MC being dumb is absolutely bullsh*t. He used his knowledge and insights about the future to strive to end all kinds of sexist concubine practices and was literally the driving force of the happy ending for the new dynasty.
Spoiler

and literally, the papers that he saved were essential to make HWJ's emperor uncle believe him about his son's treachery

It’s not as good as the ratings make it out to be. Beginning is slow and tedious, with too much repetitive writing about the setting. Nothing much happens over 100 chapters. Then the action bits is rushed and the dumb/evil emperor brother of MC dies so unsatisfactorily quick. One sentence death. Somehow he never kills a weak and sickly captured MC but conveniently delays MC death so that MC can be rescued by ML as the damsel in distress that MC is. Plot armor. Also long slow burn romance that... more>> I lost interest in them getting together and when they do, I find myself skimming all the “sweet” parts cause I just want to get to the end now. Rarely is a highly rated novel on here so disappointing to read.

This novel has a weak rabbit MC that never learns to bite when cornered. He is basically useless but we are supposed to find him endearing just because he doesn’t throw tantrums. Once ML is cured he does everything, and as soon as ML leaves MC side, MC becomes a damsel in distress. Disappointing. <<less

Very enjoyable! Reminds me of the setup of Golden Stage, but more subdued and less politics. Definitely sucks you in with the drama, but not it's not over the top where you find yourself screaming at the characters to just talk to each other. I usually dislike when misunderstandings drive the plot but it was definitely necessary in this case. I also thought it was cool how he's a historian who's an expert in the era, definitely a unique work-around for transmigrating to the past. I will say the political... more>> aspect is a little flat but, I'm someone who finds books like that confusing anyways so to me it's a strength more than a weakness. <<less

Phew! That was a long one😅

It was interesting. Good characters.

The romance is a slowburn, real slow. But the couple had chemistry, so it made it easier to continue the story. I don't think the cousin's character arc was necessary but anyways...

... more>> Not a fan of palace dramas but I was quite interested in this one.

It's nice. Just that long novels like these usually make me forget my feelings from the beginning and look forward to the end. I'm conflicted between giving it 3 or 4 ratings, so I'm just gonna leave it.

I read the translation through BookGen generated PDF and it was good, just some pronoun mix here and there but readable 👍 <<less

I've finished reading this story to the end via MTL (this story has pretty good MTL), and I think this story is amazing.

The political plot in this story is really good, although there may still be some armor plot bias towards the MC, everything is still within reasonable limits.

For the nature of the characters themselves, apart from the MC, everything is described quite well.

The character of MC itself has actually been described quite well too, but when the MC started to enter love line between ML, for some reason his... more>> character changed a bit roughly.

Apart from that there are also some other drawbacks in this story, where there are some side characters in the story who just suddenly disappear (MC Fake Concubine who is actually the trusted advisers that MC has).

I mean I understand that their roles are already finished at that time, but at least don't just disappear them without any explanation.

Even though at the end of the story they do get a bonus chapter that tells how their condition is, it still doesn't change the fact that their sudden disappearance leaves a bit of a strange gap in the story. Btw there is also a minor side couple in the story (when I say it's "minor side couple" it was really "minor side couple" It's all because their scenes are too few that maybe it doesn't exceed for 3 chapter even if we count it with bonus chapter) which in my opinion is very extraordinary, it's a shame that we only get 1 chapter of stories for both of them. <<less

I binged all translated chapters until 2am, no regret.

It's the same old transmigration trope but is well executed.

I came here for MC and ML dynamic but actually stay for the palace scheming plots. What I like best is the fact MC has no golden finger and solely relied on his braincell. The ML is ok. The side characters and cannon fodders are actually smart and has personality that's not copy paste.

    1. This is actually a light read (compared to similar theme like "The Wife is First" or "The Ugly Empress") so don't expect this one like that.
    2. Also, the way it's translated (seperated into two with cliffy) may give you illusion of high-tension story than what it actually is. So don't be too disappointed in the future

After all, the biggest charm in this story is not the plot but their relationship which are very sweet and healthy!

This story really lived up to the rating. There's enough of everything from drama, a little hint of comedy, there's the face slapping too it's executed pretty well.

Honestly the story is pretty stable. But the author kinda threw out some of the characters to the side, and the story just continue on to progress like they were never there in the first place. I think that's the main bad thing. I'm sure if this web novel were to be transformed into an LN the author would build more onto these... more>> side characters.

I really recommend reading this story, it's not too overwhelming but entertaining, also it's not a dumb story o (〃^▽^〃) o

Story: it's about a history teacher (MC) that was sent into the past, into the body of a cut sleeve prince. This cut sleeve prince was arranged to marry a crippled general (ML) . But MC knew that if he didn't treat ML well he'll ended up dead. So he protected the ML, a little too well, because ML fell for the MC. The two went on to fight the masterminds behind their misery so they could live a good life. After winning they lived happily!

Characters :

MC - is a history teacher he has a good grasp over the history of the time he got sent to. He tried to maintain the original history but he realized that was impossible if he wanted to be with ML. Also his way of face slapping is pretty good too. It's not harsh or anything it just left the villain living with regrets. I think some people might feel like he didn't slap hard enough ಥ‿ಥ

As for his chemistry with ML it's really good. MC didn't realize he loved the guy until they had to sleep in different rooms (/□\*)

ML - is a war General. A very strong man that's pretty much hailed as the God of war. But he got crippled and sent to OG Prince cause he's a cut sleeve. It's to humiliate ML. Just like the synopsis if MC hadn't time traveled and took the Prince's place, our ML won't really have the happy ending he deserved. He also ended up as a stepping stone for the villain.

He's the first to realize that he loved MC. But there's some misunderstandings between the two of them that's pretty hilarious. It also wasn't dragged too long and was cleared up really quickly. So, that's good. This couple truly complimented each other really well.

Villain 1 - he's an annoying old man. I don't want to write too much about him cause it'll be a spoiler. Basically he's got a s*upid emperor wrapped around his fingers. At the end MC made him regretted a little that he "abandoned" The emperor.

Villain 2 - he actually worked along with Villain 1 to cripple ML. His motive was revenge to ML since he saw that ML seemed to have everything, while he suffered. <<less
