Story: A-

I get some people from where they are coming from, the plotlines and such can seem to be a little repetitive at times, but for me, it is from a scale of bearable-- compelling enough to where you could care less, or that it is good enough to where it does not bother you, but I believe ATG shines from such plotlines. The world-building and its lore in this novel seem to be pretty good I have to say. It's not too big nor too small to where to... more>> story has nowhere to go to.

Characters: A

Now to get this out of the way, most of the villains are one dimensional. Most have a very cliche personality, motives, and uses. The side characters, for the most part, are pretty subjective, but for me they good enough to where they did not feel out of place, if not they could be pretty likable at times. Yun Che's Harem has something that I barely see in any harem genre WN in which that it has actual romantic development. The rating for me there is Good-- Excellent. Now there are some characters (names will not be mentioned) that may seem "annoying" to some people, but some of it just seems so overboard, as if it was some kind of bandwagoning that's happening here. As for the Yun Che himself. I would say that the man himself can be a lot of things. He can be kind, hateful, prideful, arrogant, loveable, loyal, intelligent, dumb, etc... It all depends on the situation and who exactly is screwing with him and his people. Some may say he is ruthless, but he has given people in the story enough chances to where he would not have to kill them, although at times it can be seen as very unreasonable. He is a man loyal to the people here cares about, and a demon to those who try to hurt them. Some say he is too OP, others say he is too weak in terms of pacing depending on which ark you are on. For the most part, his Yun Che's progression for me seems to be fine. Some people say he is a luck- base character, but that is pretty disingenuous as it is one thing to find these OP abilities, but it is another to earn the right to use it. For the most part, all the OP'ness that he gets is well deserved. The dialogue between the characters have been fun/interesting to read, except for the villains, but they are bearable enough for me at the least.

Action: B+

This is the most entertaining part of the Novel, or at least for me. Some battles seem to be too drawn out which usually the important battles, but all in all, it's still fun to read. Now I can say that there are times where the could seem like fights but with a bigger boom in terms of progression, but for the most part, every fight always has their stakes/ reasonings for why they happen. There are times when Yun Che out right annihilates his opponents, and there are times where the MC actually struggles, if not almost dies from it. I kind of like that as it brings variety to the outcomes of the battles, instead of being so one-sided all the time.

Summary: Even with the flaws that it has, ATG is a very good compelling novel to read. Good story, decent characters, and good fight scenes. Also excellent romance for the most part. <<less

Good read in the plethora mess of chinese novels. I have red many and this one definitely stand among of my favs. The story is engaging, the lore is well described, the author make the plot very clear with no mistake like some author wrote "this" in previous chapters then later forgot they wrote that and write a totally different "that" in newer chapters. But the main character turn quite dull later in the story because he has something to lose now[ family, kid ], so he can't risk anymore... more>> and become indecisive. Ah but well he lack a brain but Jasmine has a big one so she can think for him.

PS : Jasmine best girl, I think the author think the same by how much he made the main character suffered to meet her again and become a couple. Silly Husband and Witty Wifey combo
Spoiler

but at chapter 1518 she got hurt badly by a master of the realm [don't know how to call them in EN cuz I read in vietnamese] so they are temporary separated again =.= And this will be the last volume, author will start on a new novel very soon

This is a straight review without spoliers.

  • Action: 10/10
Do you want bloody battles and massacres?

Yep, this is the right place.

  • Adventure: 8/10
Do you want travels and a well built world?

Yep, right place.

  • Ecchi: 6/10
The novel does have ecchi but it's not the focus and it's really rare.

  • Fantasy: 9/10
If you came for this genre you will not be disappointed.

  • Harem: 6/10
Again it's not the main focus, and although the girls have well built personalities, with the time flow they are just left aside and become ornaments. Really sad.

  • Martial arts: 9/10
The techniques are well made and explained, the MC doesn't slack off. So you will be satisfied in this aspect. <<less

Ahhhh, what a waste.

At the start it gave me a new feeling that this is gonna be worthwhile.

But as the progression starts he doesn't learn from any of his mistakes, also how the author repeats the story it's making me aggitated

... more>> Tournament -> Accident -> Gets stronger -> New harem member -> Leaves to a new place then repeat.

I liked his thick-skinned personality but why can't he seemed to realize HE is a f*cking unique existence. Like they said he lacks ambition and what not but can you please make his EQ and IQ higher. I thought I was reading a sh*t on 1k+ chapter cause of his s*upidity <<less

So multiple rewrites later...

You have to read it yourself. ATG is a 5/5 at times and at other times a 3/5. It really varies and is entirely subjective.

Overall everything (so far) is explained and makes sense. Even changes in character that some people pointed out as negative. At least there are no glaring issues like in other Novels.

... more>> It contains the usual xianxia tropes: Arrogant/s*upid enemies, Tournaments, Heaven-defying legacies, etc.

Most xianxia novels you read will have different strengths and weaknesses, ATG is no exception to this. So only you can decide if you like it or not.

If you want a novel with great cultivation aspects (insights in universal laws etc.) I would prefer Coiling Dragon over this.

If you want a great comedy, A Will Eternal does it far better.

Since ATG got such a focus on the harem aspect I think it boils down to your ability to like the different women or ignore/skip-read those parts.

For me personally, it is at least in my Top5 but I can totally understand why some people don't enjoy it at all. There are multiple parts that I don't like either but in its entirety (so far) I can whole heartily recommend that you at least give it a try.

All I would like to say regarding many 1/5 and 2/5 reviews, don't listen to them. I really don't get the majority of them at all. Why read a xianxia novel if you have problems with the usual xianxia tropes.

Also regarding the plot-armour comments. There is literally no xianxia without. Either the MC is overprepared/OP and the fights are entirely boring, or the MC gets saved by a miracle/special person/legacy. In some novels the MC gets badly wounded and takes month/years to heal but this happens here as well so the "novel is garbage cause plot armour" comments don't really make sense considering it's like this in 99.9999% of xianxia novels. <<less

The overall story is interesting even though some arcs are somewhat repeated (like all people think MC dying and he come back very powerful) but its ok as u will not get bored and MC is persistent towards his loved one, and every harem member plays an important role in MC life, as for the heavy plot armour of the MC character it is due to an heavenly treasure in the story (Mirror of Samsara) as it tempers the cause of effect (karma) thats y MC luck is too good

  • MC is not s*upid but is very cunning if the situation is out of his control he is impulsive
  • Even though you ll get pissed with MC behavior (in volume 11) but its very temporary

This novel started with an intersting plot, powerless but smart MC with an extrem talent for healtcare. But basicly each arcs follows the same scheme after MC healed his powerless state c40+:

0. MC gets a god like power up out of nowhere (mystical creature or his Lolli girlfriend)

1. MC (still with the Loser LVL) geht bullied out of nowhere and without a logical reason because the villian is the son of the most powerfull clan/sect/family in this area.

2. MC found the love of his life, a „jade-like“ skined beauty... more>> (of cause the bully will smash her too)

3. MC talks big and start the fight with the villain/s

4. Villian want to kill MC (still loser LVL) because he gets beaten

5. MC kills or cripple villain

6. Change the Place (Loop)

The author starts with a intersting story but after chapter 100 it is clear, there is no red thread for a main story anymore. You get a image how the lvl-system works, until the author break his rules to let the MC shine more brilliant then others. Especial the author writes about, how OP the MC for his age is. But still much weaker than the villain. After some location switches MC-LVL isn‘t this outstandig anymore for his age group because in the new location have to be a new shining villain. <<less

Against the Gods isn't your typical sort of novel, whether it comes to cultivation levels or character development, the MC is shown to be a strong, powerful and ruthless MC who knows the meaning of exterminating all threats that appear before him, he has the true heart of a killer and shows no hesitation killing someone who is of no importance or a problem to him, cultivation wise I must say this novel did it right, in most novels you find the MC has this awesome cultivation technique that never... more>> seems to truly make them powerful, sure they can fight a few levels above them, but thats it, against the gods however shows the true meaning of a op cultivation method (and rightly so), the MC gains the cultivation of the *Evil God* through his blood and he becomes capable of fighting many levels above him and sometimes even a realm or 2 above him, this is very well done and I consider this correct as if you are practicing a cultivation technique made by and actual god who stood at the pinnacle and was only rivaled by another god or other gods (depending on number) you should be able to fight well above your rank as who else can stand against a god in the making?

Character development wise its good at best and not great, MC has luck like all other novels but he also comes across major setbacks unlike some other novels where its only a setback or 2 across the entire novel. The story becomes a lot better after he leaves his planet for a higher realm as in my opinion he becomes a lot less restrained in terms of killing people (His planet is not known by anyone since its very low ranked and very far away from most realms, so he can run away and his relatives/loved ones wont be in danger.)

The MC is a reincarnated MC so you can except some cliches like being skilled in certain areas from past lives (in this novels case it is alchemy) but this ability is not entirely formed from his own knowledge, its also from his encounters and an item that he has which helps him extremely well with his life.

Would recommend this novel to those who don't mind ruthless MC who has killed many people without regrets.

As of the latest chapters the novel has become pure garbage, there is zero development and the MC even managed to get himself crippled then magically becomes just as strong again, but is it useful? No because all his enemies are god emperors or around that and he isnt even as strong as their pinky finger, this has turned from him exploring, killing and finding out secrets of his blood to running, hiding then running to save someone he knows but he is so weak he just has to run away again after somehow saving them,
Spoiler

As of now apparently his home planet was destroyed by his wife (xia qingyue) and now the author doesn't really have to write anything about them anymore, how a god emperor was able to destroy a planet multiple true gods and creation gods called home and left inheritances on, I'm guessing it's either one big illusion for "plot" purposes or he'll just become a god eventually then revive them all with some evil god ability.

[collapse]
, best option honestly is to pretend that he never left blue pole star, his kid with wife was found and is safe (they are) and he cured little demon empress and jasmine came back and they lived happily every after, it just gets worse and worse as the novel goes on and he's just dragging it along. <<less

From my POV, Main is superbly awesome!!! OP but not too OP! Good person indeed. He's so cool and mystical, keep his cool to his best. Main is perfect. Girls are cute too. Main is intelligent and profound too.

Just this novel is predictable. Main always wins, at least that's the case up to chap 166. But I don't pay heed. In order for Main to be awesome, forget about the predictability thing, haha!

I love how the story was written and it's plot progession. The novel is recommended for those who like to think about the past situations that would affect the future. And there are a lot of mysteries that would make you want to read this. Though, the release rate right now is quite slow because of the author. It leaves you a cliffhanger and will give you a moment to ponder of the remaining infos give by the latest chapter. There are twists that are not yet answered and powers... more>> of the MC which he can't use at the moment but then will gradually awaken. <<less

My first xianxia and probably my favorite. What sets this xianxia apart from the rest is its sheer readability - everything is written in a very smooth and simplistic way and the translation is top notch. The novel understands its audience wants action and thus never are chapters wasted. sh*t goes down every chapter. This is in stark contrast to a lot of other xianxia novels, which waste tons and tons of chapters on leveling up, fight sequences (don't get me wrong these are fun to read... but if a... more>> fight ever goes on for more than 3 chapters it's too much), pointless exploration... all of this is cut to a minimum in ATG and the vast majority of the novel is character interaction.

With all this being said, know that the MC is super c*cky and a bit of a narcissist, literally every girl falls for him, and he's literally underestimated in every fight yet has yet to lose one. If these things turn you off you probably shouldn't read this xianxia. There's also quite a bit of misogyny in this novel which doesn't really bother me and fits with the novel being Chinese but can turn others off pretty quickly. <<less

MC is very likable, so as the harem members. Each has their personalities, neat backgrounds and even though it follows the usual Chinese novel format, the writing makes up for it.

The world building (cultivation, continent/plane explanations) is good and kept short, plot is one of the better ones.

Spoiler

even though he keeps dying

Give the first arc a try.

And most importantly, to Alyschu for translating this novel. Thanks for the hard work and fast releases.

Storyline is superv. MC is quite good, Harlem is lacking when the MC wants a girl he has her but then he goes to a new girl and forgets about the other there's like 7 or 8 girls!! And 3-4 are forgotten or left alone, but except that everything is good.

It's so so that's all. Nothing different from other chinese novels but it's still interesting even though sometimes a bit boring (:

One thing that I don't really like from the personality of the protagonist is... being way too arrogant. It's okay being arrogant at the right time but the MC is arrogant in a wrong way, I don't know what is he trying to fight for maybe he's trying to fight for his pet gold fish's parasite that has been eaten by a shrimp? Whatever. Most of chinese WN has... more>> this kind of MC personality and it's really degrades the quality of the novels. I don't know if being arrogant is part of chinese culture or whatever but I often read and noticed chinese novels to have arrogant MC personality. <<less

ATG is a very fun novel, where the protag is constantly facing enemies stronger than him, and finding means to become stronger.

However, understand that the deus ex machina is extremely real, and Yun Che has impenetrable plot armor. If you read this, you will understand exactly how extremely bullsh*t the level of "luck" can be

The story is fairly formulaic, but Yun Che's visible and gradual increase in power, and the introduction and development of various characters, makes it fairly interesting to read.

ATG is by no means a well written book.... more>> Like nearly all other Chinese novels, it features an unbeatable MC, numerous swooning beauties, and that one cheat ability they use to get through most of the story.

However, as I said before, it is fun. Very enjoyable to read, albeit extremely predictable. <<less

The worldbuilding is great. The story has a nice pace, a thick plot armor and sometimes really funny too but,

There's just TOO much luck involved here that it feels annoying at times.

The novel is full of one-dimensional, extremely beautiful, big-boobed, virg*ns.

... more>> MC preaches too much sometimes.

Jasmine is FAR TOO OP and at some times you can't even remember that she's even 2 years younger than Yun Che.

Anyways, there are a lot of things that are annoying but the story progresses nicely and the plot is somewhat good as well. For me it was a good read and it's quite good if you like traditional xianxia novels. <<less

People complain about the numerous cliches that are present in this story. Furthermore, they complain about how repetitive it gets, and how each new arc he enters he ends up doing the same thing: saving beauties, slapping the arrogant, surpassing the limits etc.

However, this story isn't about uniqueness or original plot ideas. Instead, the execution of these cliches is on an entirely new level, to the point where you can claim the masterful manipulation of emotions using unoriginal plot devices a unique point of the novel. Simply put, Against the... more>> Gods implements common storylines that possibly hundreds of other novels use, but Mars does such a good job of it that it's easy and fun to read.

Originality in novels doesn't mean sh*t if it isn't written well. I cannot count how many times I've read something interesting only for it to fall short because the author doesn't know what he/she was doing. He/She couldn't keep up the quality of each chapter and made sure information stayed relevant and easy to digest.

tl;dr Mars is a good author. He likes to make his MCs OP but it's still quite the emotional rollercoaster ride. Better to read a solid novel like ATG instead of a shitty one. <<less

I don’t get why people dislike the MC too much, I guess people are used to having MCs that are holier than thou characters with no cracks in their personalities or something. They hate the fact that the MC is too ruthless. Yeah, that’s what he’s supposed to be like. In his past life his master was killed even though he did nothing but cure people and the MC was chased and became a fugitive that he had to kill his way to survive. Yeah if that doesn’t make you... more>> ruthless, I don’t know what will. Yeah he wipes out a s*upid and arrogant clan, big deal.

The MCs psychology is easy to understand, he can risk his life for people he cares about no matter how insignificant those characters are, and he’s ruthless to his enemies who crossed his bottom line no matter who they are. And he’s passionate when it comes to women, and this is what most people gets sensitive about him that I don’t get. People forget the fact the it’s set in a heroic age where the concept of monogamy doesn’t exist. He appreciates beauties and flirts with them so what. It’s not like he r*pes them on first sight or force them to have relationships with him or chase other people’s women. People gets pissed when he make seemingly s*upid decisions because of a woman, but hell, v*gina is kryptonite to some men, and the MC is one of them, that's one of his flaws. <<less
