Apocalypse Survival: Starting with Potato Cultivation!

Rabbit hunger disease refers to the phenomenon where if people only eat rabbit meat during a famine, no matter how much they eat, they will quickly starve to death. This is due to nutritional imbalance. However, eating only potatoes will not cause this.

Potatoes are a rare food that prevents starvation, almost meeting all the nutritional elements the human body needs to sustain life. In simple terms: potatoes are awesome.

Qiao Xuejun, a recent graduate in agronomy, just started her job when she unexpectedly transmigrated to the apocalypse and bound to a granary system.

The apocalypse is imminent, with extreme high temperatures, heavy rain, floods, snow disasters, acid rain, and mutated creatures. Extreme weather alternates, disasters are endless, and humanity struggles to survive with scarce resources.

System: Hoarding grain can be exchanged for a shelter; the more grain, the more advanced the shelter.

Hoarding grain and farming? This is a perfect match, my specialty!

As soon as she opened her eyes, she was tricked by her awful relatives into buying their unsold potatoes.

What a coincidence!

The potato variety is Holland No. 15, with a short dormancy period, strong disease resistance, easy to plant, and easy to store, yielding ten thousand jin per mu.

With a large warehouse, Qiao Xuejun bought them all out amidst her relatives’ gazes of them being a sucker.

System: Congratulations to the host for completing the pre-disaster reserve mission. Mission Reward: Shelter (Primary). Only 1 day until the apocalypse.

I'm dubious if this is 3.5 or 4.

I'm mostly leaving it here because the two-star review doesn't realize she's leaving her bunker because while she has a system that can exchange things for things, she also needs material inputs, which, you guessed it, means she has to leave the bunker.

The antagonist is.. Honestly, part of the problem is that it's setup to create face-slapping arcs. And the antagonist is rather shameful. So, you might just feel the author is setting up problems to set up problems to move the plot.... more>> This is why I took a star off from what is a decent story. <<less

I do not know why the other reviews are calling the protagonist intelligent, this person is giga-ret*rded. Examples in the spoilers.

Spoiler

Protagonist has a bunker with food supplies and power that can expand and even gain defenses by just growing food in it. Outside is the start of the apocalypse where everyone is desperate and now there is even a zombie outbreak. The bunker is under the protagonists home and all her neighbors (who are very antagonist) think she is gone.

Now the protagonist hears on the internet unsubstantiated rumors that mugwort is effective in repelling zombies. Now these zombies won't get into her bunker, it's been stated while not the most secure, a normal person without specialized equipment could never get in and it's hidden. So what do they do? Leave to go get mugwort from the mountain. So she can hang it in the house (not the bunker) and let people know it's inhabited. A few bad things mostly related to exposure result from this.

First she runs into and kills a zombie on the mountain leaving behind a steel slingshot ball. Second she runs into government officials at her house and tells them where the zombie is, so she might get a mu*der charge and is exposed as being there to the local government. Third her neighbors spot her so more exposure.

What does she decide to do immediately after getting back? Well it might be useful to go get some wood from the nearby forest right?

Who in their right f*cking mind leaves the bunker for this shit. I get they want to add stakes but give her a good reason to go. A power failure that needs to be fixed, a water shortage, a family member they need to save. Not I could maybe use some wood at some point, that's good to have right?

I'm sure her collecting will come in clutch later but that is just not something I plan to read about.

This is an amazing! Apocalyptic survival with a side of agriculture and a tiny bit of marine biology. With some sprinkle of romance (later chapters).

Great work from the translation team. More kudos to the author!

You know that thing when authors try to make their MC smart but they lack research themselves so it turns umm... lackluster? Well no worries! Author themself is very knowledgable in farming. I feel like the author themself is an agriculture graduate.

MC is not entirely reliant on her own "system". She keeps in mind that she... more>> needs to survive even without the system. She's not too OP. She's all hardwork and knowledge.

There is an ML in here and the romance does slowly build up (sending home, exchange "gifts" etc.). Its pretty sweet. ML is decent in terms of apocalyptic novels. Cold blooded iron-fist but rational and decisive. He appears early but the interactions only starts when they become "neighbors".

OriFL as a villain is a bit of a dumbass probably because of being overly reliant on her own "system". Not really annoying cause she only appears every few chapters. Sometimes she not even a villain and more of a side character cause she's trying to complete her own tasks.

A lot of side characters are also given a chance to shine. MC's team are great. Same as other characters from ML's base. Not everything is solved by MC. She is just mostly a supplier, it is other people who think of ways to finish the problem. You can feel the appreciation of the author on other occupations besides the obvious doctors, soldiers, and farmers, i.e. carpenters, engineers, chefs, tailors and scientists.

All in all. An amazing read. <<less

This is so underrated, that is so unfair. I hope those who haven't really read this won't make the mistake of giving it a low ratings.

I have read so many apocalyptic related genre. And I would say, this one is detailed enough and engaging enough.

Give it a chance, although the novel is not yet completed and ongoing.

... more>> The translation is terrific.

The MC is emotionally dull and denial. So you won't find much romance, even at the chapter I am reading.

But nevertheless, her grit and determination won me over. She is not OP and not entirely reliable on her system.

So it is great! Give it a try :) <<less

(Review as of Chapter 282. I might give a spoiler update once I finish reading, but I think the novel is ongoing at this time.)

I agree with MikKieri's review.

This is a semi-serious novel about surviving an environmental apocalypse and the mutations from such catastrophe.

Our FL (25) is brave, resourceful, kind (but not a saint), and intelligent. She was an agriculture student who transmigrated into a family not too different from her original background—except this version comes without formal education and scummy relatives who stole her parents' insurance payout... more>> to support their equally conniving grandson, the FL's cousin. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Her character is actually quite consistent—some might say bordering on one-dimensional compared to the ML, but this consistency reflects her maturity. She's someone who acts with conviction and grit. She never backs down from a fight, especially when facing off against the oriFL and oriML, which highlights her strong sense of justice and determination.

One of her character flaws is her slow-burn feelings for the ML, which honestly frustrates me as a reader—because who could resist such an ML? But from a real-life perspective, this trait becomes a strength. It's refreshing to see a heroine who doesn't fall in love blindly, especially when the man hasn't been entirely forthright about his feelings yet.

ML (27) is a highly intelligent, ruthless, and methodical sniper whose military achievements and sacrifices earned him the rank of colonel at a remarkably young age. Early in the apocalypse, he foresaw the critical importance of agriculture and had a memorable encounter with the FL, during which we learn he possesses an almost instinctive ability to detect lies (presumably trained by thr army). This trait leads to a few comedic moments later on, as well as life-saving decisions.

He is a natural leader, deeply respected and even idolized by his soldiers. Importantly, he does not fall into the stereotypical CEO trope often seen in similar stories—so far, he's been all green flags. He genuinely values the FL's expertise, even though her body's original owner clearly lacked formal education. He also admires her courage—and finds her adorable, lol. Because ML's methods are so intentional and precise, I have a feeling he's using "boiling a frog in warm water" to pursue FL with little thoughtful gifts and making sure she understands she's important to him.

Spoiler

lol, one chapter later than my review (ch 283, the ML answers a question from FL that makes his feelings a lot less ambiguous. Even FL understands... so cute. But true to FL's character she makes up excuses and still doesn't fully believe ML's intentions.

[collapse]

The oriFL is, unfortunately, quite lacking in intelligence. While the FL carries a practical granary system, the oriFL is burdened with a favorability system—one she misuses due to her vanity and lack of critical thinking skills. Ironically, it's this very system that fuels her god complex, constantly affirming that she is the FL of this world and therefore can do no wrong.

As for the oriML, he's an unexpected twist—but saying more would spoil things.

This novel is nearly perfect in terms of storyline, but there are a few gaps—particularly in the explanations of certain technologies, the fates of some supporting characters' families, and why those characters seem to not mention them much. Perhaps the families will be addressed later on?

Don't go into this novel expecting comprehensive world-building, a fast-paced romance, or traditional zombie action. At its core, it's about the struggle to rebuild civilization in a world largely submerged by water overrun by mutated sea creatures, where the real threat lies in the fierce competition for scarce resources. In the beginning, everyone is fearless and strives hard to survive but reality, loss, and sacrifices chip away their resolve and sanity bit by bit, too. There are enough details and engagement where this won't be a quick and mindless read.

Spoiler

official relationship starts at ch. 330 :). You're welcome. The wait is totally worth it.
