Once celebrated as a war hero, now a guide bearing scars from past injuries, Kang Hajung.

Just a day before his discharge, Hajung is assigned to guide a new recruit, Kim Moohyuk, who has been rushed into the center.

“…If he doesn’t receive guidance, Kim Moohyuk will die.”

Hajung saved him simply because he couldn’t let him die, but in doing so, he found himself irrevocably tied to Moohyuk, an extraordinarily high-ranking Esper unlike any in history.

His long-awaited retirement slips out of reach, and to make matters worse, he’s designated as the pair guide for the much younger Moohyuk. Then, one day, he’s sent on a mission and meets his end, shot dead.

With a regretful thought of not making it to retirement before his death, he opens his eyes to an unfamiliar reflection—a stranger holding his own cheek, in complete shock.

Thus, Hajung awakens in someone else’s body, five years later, in the center. He soon learns that his original body has already been laid to rest.

Despite the chaos, Hajung quickly revives his long-deferred dream of retirement…

“At this point, I’m getting discharged before anyone finds out.”

The relentless struggle of a guide who dreams only of retiring.

Thanks to those positive comments, I decided to give this book chance. I'm glad I did it because it amazing. I love how the story started. I loved how Hajung's process his "new" situation and he blend in very well. There was no dragging plot lines and the pace was very good. I'm not good at giving reviews, sorry. Give this book a chance, you will love it.

Not related but, this is the 2nd book I read in 2 days that has an MC that is loved by his friends.... more>> I feel slightly jealous of these friendships. <<less

How is there no reviews on this one?!

It's very good. Lots of action and intrigue and pathos!

I usually avoid esper/guide stories because a lot of them seem super unbalanced. The OP Esper coerces the pathetic Guide into a one sided contract and stolkholmes syndromes them into a relationship sort of deal.

This one balances that out in a very surprising way. Age gap, but like with an interesting twist.

The younger ML simps hard, but is unable to get past the superior/apprentice barrier. Until the MC dies and comes back as younger than himself and with a lower rank in a different body. Even after ML figures out it's him though, he still waits for consent. Their swapping of hierarchy actually brings balance to their relationship. They've both had years of experience on the battle field now, gone through excruciating grief, and learned to rely on each other emotionally, even if they still have communication/trust issues.

Anyways, the chapters are pretty long and the plot is bopping.

Do I think there could be better world building? Yes. The author is relying heavily on it being a modern setting without explaining or showing how it's different.

Could the side character be better fleshed out? For sure, but it's not to the point you forget their existance.

Over all like a 4.3 rounded up to 5 stars. <<less

I'm surprised there's only one review so far. Adding a second one because this novel deserves it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one! It's primarily character focused, with enough intrigue/plot to keep a decent level of tension, but what really got me was the depiction of the MC's struggles with grief, his mental health, and chronic injury/disability. Even after transmigrating to a new body, these things are still treated seriously as things that continue to affect him.

Seeing how much the ML cares for and supports the MC, through tender domesticity and little acts of service, especially during the MC's more serious depressive episodes... it genuinely made me emotional.

(Also, for a guide/esper story, it was nice to see at least some world building that actually addresses some of the toxic aspects typical of the genre in a refreshing way. There's not much, since the author keeps things pretty simple since it's more of a real world setting, but it's still nice to see.) <<less

I actually don't agree with the majority that the esper and guide was balance. Although they each have their own functions, it is undeniable that they weren't treated as equals. I was disappointed that the colonel that was highly praised was actually beyond dumb in many situations. Although he is feisty, many times he walked into a lions den without a plan, while bragging in his own narration that he is going to throw hands... I just want to grab him by the collar and tell him that putting yourself... more>> in danger is not a plan. He only meticulously got out of them because ML conveniently happens to be there to save him. I just don't know how he is a seasoned and experienced military official. If this was real world, he wouldn't survive a week.

His "close-friends" are mediocre at best— not once they did anything significant of their own free way to show that they are good friends/characters. I wish we got to see more of what's made them good friends of his.

Spoiler

In the last arc, an incident happened and many guides were killed and everyone in military base was blaming him. His 'good' research friend knew this and still told MC to get lunch from the canteen by himself. Ofcourse the MC was humiliated. Keep in mind this is military setting and his friends are suppose to be in high positions. YOU THING they would have some brains. Also, they never went out of their way to even attempt to investigate his death--some friends they are. ONLY the ML did...

The MARs group came out of no where. Other than them being explained to be strong, there was nothing about them that made them memorable or likeable. How is it that a trained special forces group (best of the best) were like lost as chickens with their heads cut off just cuz their leaders in a comma— does not a single one of them have a braincell except their leader.

It would've been nice if MC in his previous life had a team of his own that way it would show more of his leadership and strong relationships skills with others. Getting moments of combing his team with the MARs for the final show down would've been more impactful.

MC is always contradicting himself too. For example, one moment he was going to seek his ex to get an explanation but when he saw his ex, suddenly he had no interest to listen. He cries over his ex partner for years... all suddenly he doesn't care anymore just cuz he has a love interest now (someone that he literally grew up with) — like hello... ? Also their relationship was so unbalanced. It would've made more sense to give MC the upper hand time-to-time because they had such long/deep relationship BUT nope, the ex just tr*shed him.

Spoiler

He was explained to be a good teacher to many guides. These guides never show up in the story. He also had an opportunity to teach some new B level guides in his new life but nothing came of that. It would've been cute to see him not being able to help himself and end up teaching them. Then in the scenes where everyone was blaming him, these students could've stood up for him and defend his character. If his good friend also put in a few words for him, than it would've feel natural for people to go "oh maybe we were wrong to jump to conclusions, he has so many people defending him."

I really enjoyed this story since I've read it's manhwa. The MC is an uptight military man and is also kind as a person if not gruff because of his experience in the corrupted military. He was experiencing depression and grief and was one step away from retiring when ML enters the scene. It was frustrating moment I tell you. But ML was such a puppy in those early days and then he grows into having nagging doting thug obsessed personality.... Depends on the person talking.

And it's always hilarious how... more>> OBLIVIOUS our MC is. Everything and all romance gestures are useless as in our MC does not understand his worth as a guide. As he really have only had 2 espers which both are very possesive of him. And he never noticed. He is aware of the possessive nature of espers but his 2 espers never showed him that side of them thus making him feel that is other people's problem. Let me tell you, I think that Moohyuk is already onto him early on as the Colonel, because of that changed behaviour towards the person who harrased him.

Overall this story is more to romance than that on ultimate plot goal. But it does have plot twists that makes it thrilling. Love this story. <<less
