When I first saw the story, I thought it would be another one of those generic isekai with a harem and a dense MC who would gather girls half his age like pokemon.

I didn't even want to give it a try, but I just happened to be very bored and did read it.

Boy, was I wrong. This story is amazing!

... more>> I guess it's a bit satirical and mainly focuses on comedy overall, but it surprisingly is capable of drawing a fascinating world a reader could immerse themself in.

The main attraction is the colorful cast of characters who all are memorable and interesting, unlike the flat cardboard copies of extras of novels of the same genre.

I'll first describe the MC.

The main character is tr*sh, both on the inside and the outside. His looks have been described as ugly, he calls himself a "middle-aged soy-sauce faced busaman". His personality is even worse: he's a pe*vert who lusts after little girls and has considered delusions of raping some female characters who have appeared.

Despite this, he is a rather smart man who can pull himself, and his companions together and lead the way out of many tough situations. Occasionally, he has a silver tongue as if he maxed out his speech skills like in fallout.

Basically, he's not a brainless monkey who thinks with his lower body but a person who can actually think of the consequences of his actions (though I think it begins to show more in the light novel version), which already sets him aside from most common isekai protagonists.

He also is a great friend. There were so many unexpected but touching bromance moments in the series, reading them was truly heart-warming.

I guess what I like a lot in the novel is that despite his op-Ness, he needs to work real hard to get out of the sticky situations he found himself in.

Then, other characters.

Truth be told, I got tired of describing the MC, so I'll summarise: the side characters grow and its not stuck in our faces but it shows and its interesting to see and the growth doesn't seem forced.

Magic noble
Spoiler

typical noble that treats commoners like dirt - > magic nut - > an actually reliable companion and friend - > a man in love who works hard to achieve his goal

[collapse]

Ester
Spoiler

typical tsundere, part of hero's harem - > assertive brat, pursues MC - > assertive pe*verted but reliable girl who actually isn't an incompetent baggage, pursuing MC with no success as of yet

[collapse]

Sophie
Spoiler

typical commoner bartender girl, seems like she'll either be an extra or become part of the harem - > a kinda scheming petty girl who's envious and fearful of nobles - > a kinda pe*vert, she's a bit pitiful, maybe will be a part of the harem? - > a girl who loves gossip, a closet sadistic pe*vert, a person who can do good work. I doubt she'll be romantically involved with MC at this point

[collapse]

Allen
Spoiler

a typical harem MC, an ikemen - > he's a shounen protagonist stereotype right? - >what a bro this guy is! I kinda ship him and MC a bit - > dude is so pitiful, but he's so bro

[collapse]

Etc...

He story starts off light, but little by little it deepens and thickens, becoming more interesting and subtly making itself more and more unique.

There isn't even harem there! Nor is there romance (though I can't help but feel sorry for that loli character pursuing the MC...) <<less

Atelier Tanaka.

It's an excellent novel and you'll hardly find anything alike it, normally you'll find your MC to be handsome and the author will make every possible means to make him as attractive as possible but here it's complete opposite our MC here is a ugly 36 years old pe*vert but that doesn't make it bad, infact it's make it even more interesting, it's hilarious beyond expectations, there were times were I have to take break in between, not because I don't want to continue, but my cheek hurts while... more>> reading it, I'll die if I read continuously, if you considered konosuba hilarious then it is at least ten times more hilarious but at the same time it doesn't hold back any punches it's for people who possess very dirty mind (not family friendly) but if you're one, you'll greatly enjoy this and I don't think you'll ever forget about it.

Despite being such a good novel, it got a lot of bad reviews, it's not because the novel is bad, definitely not, it's just that this novel is for certain group of people, like I said before it doesn't hold back any punches when it comes to comedy and that's why it's so good, dirty jokes, creepy stuff, plot, hilarious misunderstanding, POV, illustrations are very well done but if you're expecting something serious then you'll be greatly disappointed.

The best I can relate it with an anime 'The world were concept of dirty jokes does not exist" it's fall under this category, nothing serious, hilarious just enjoy it with a free mind. The good part is I think the 1st chapter itself will decide if you're into it or not.

Thank you <<less

Protag permanently has the idiot ball, and his actions are ridiculously inconsistent.

He's OP! Wrecks a dragon, knows it, and shows off a bit, then oh noes some random guy that he can explode whenever he chooses, he's like "I don't know if I can beat him!"

He gripes and complains about things he can easily change, but does nothing about it. When literally two pages ago the same thing happened and he did do something about it.

... more>> The other characters are no better. They're all flat stereotypes.

The authour just throws out threads that could be interesting, but lets them all flop nowhere. There's little continuity, it feels like he pulls everything out from nowhere.

You basically have to turn off your brain and/or repeatedly get amnesia to enjoy the shitty writing.

Which is quite a shame, as it has an interesting if somewhat cliche fantasy setting with a quite unique premise that suits my tastes. I like my darker fantasy stories, I love the gritty shades of grey.

In the end, that's my greatest gripe - this story could be so much better in any way you like with actually good writing. Without sacrificing anything, it could be funny, it could be emotional, it could be compelling, the characters could act outside of shallow stereotypes, the MC could develop, or we could see more of an interesting world.

As it is though, this story is wet cardboard; it could have been anything, but is nothing. <<less

The MC is both the best and the worst part of this series. He is why this series ia above average to me and also why it is not getting a full 5-star.

His monologue is really creepy. Really f*cking creepy. Yes, I know that people do have vile thoughts every now and then, but to this extend it crossed the territory from relatable to 'dude, you need psychiatrist'. His actions in the later part of the novels toward the blond half-succubus noblelady also kinda pissed me off, even though it... more>> is really in-character and fresh compare to most other LN/WN.

On the other hand, the guy is consistently good if cowardly. Reading this dude trying to be best wingbro for everyone asking warm my heart. Aside from all the creepiness, the guy has never gone out of his way to ab*se his power, trying to smooth over conflicts no matter who he encountered, and have deep-seated inferiority complex, which make him really really feel like his description as a 30-something wizard. I personally feel that the author did a great job in the 'show, don't tell' department, especially during the later part; it came through to me that the guy did all these things for his friends because he really treasure them as friends and would indeed fight to the death for their sake.

Still, this novel really need you to turn a certain part of your brain off to enjoy, but it is a good ride.

Also, the WN is not over. Somebody please fix, I soldiered through the broken MT only to see that it is not over yet. I hate waiting for new chapters. <<less

It’s certainly one of the most interesting non-standard stories out there. It is really weird to read MC’s random pe*vert thoughts, but, eventually, you get used to this. Plot and characters are really interesting except some borderline almost ntr.

the only drawback of this series is a very slow translation (1 volume in 8 months KEKW).

  • 5? To counter TROLLS
I have to be honest, I've use this site for years, but been too lazy to write a review until now. I can no longer tolerate the bias trolls flooding this novel with 1s. There are so many people who see the tags, decide to read the novel, but then complain about the story because of said tags? Then the other half who try to complain about the story, but only prove they didn't even comprehend what they were reading. This isn't a perfect 5? Novel, but... more>> there is no way you can justify giving this 1?

Let me start off by explaining, Atelier-Tanaka is a story that is a parody of itself much like "KonoSuba". The MC, Tanaka, dies and gets to be reincarnated, he expects be some handsome protagonist with his own harem like every other isekai only to kind he is still ugly. This is the running joke of the series.

I've seen so many complaints about the protagonist being worst than a beta male or genetic pu**y when this has been what makes the story so funny. The MC is so overwhelming over powered yet all he cares for is the most depraved perversity thoughts you can even come up with! Another parody of what you would expect from a usually isekai protagonist.

This novel does have its shortcomings, as there are more and more "filler" chapters the later the story goes, but this is a unique story that puts such a twist of what you would expect from a isekai after having the market flooded with them. For those who actually understand comedy I highly recommended at least trying the first volume. For all those SJW that couldn't understand the Dave Chappelle special, please just stay under your bridges. <<less

Want to hate yourself just as much as those NTR novels? Well this is basically the next best thing. Includes your favorite cliche isekai genre that you so love because let's face it you're about to kill yourself after reading this novel or at least that's why your reading to push you over the edge. There's also some generic pu*sy Japanese protagonist which you can all relate to like you're trying to become the next Jesus and live life for everyone else. Did I mention the fact that this novel... more>> actually lacks real r18 writing?
Spoiler

Honestly the protagonist could have just cured the princess w/o the potion and shouldn't recovery magic technically give back a girls v*rginity? Either that or maybe think "Time Magic" or "Transformation Magic" instead of flying magic at lvl 55.

Sadly I can't give this novel a 1 because It's meant to be a parody of what losers go through in life never getting over themselves and does it so most of you kept reading it. <<less

This novel is freaking bad.... more>>
Spoiler

the girls in this novel's are b*tches. The main protagonist looks like he's ntr'd luckily he dont have a feelings for the heroine sluts in here. And also the girls fell in love with him and then they have s*x with another man, literally a main heroine that is a complete failure of a kind.

[collapse]

Someone said it here in this comment section

Spoiler

The first s*x scene absolutely does not count because the girls were already in a s*xual relationship with Allen by the time Tanaka even meets them.

[collapse]

You have a point but main heroines v*rginity are all meant only for they're main protagonist. So this is really f*cked up.

Allen already has taste the body of the heroine's here and the main protagonist does not which is really irritating. <<less

I am glad to see this novel has been picked up again for translation. It is seriously one of the most funny novels in the isekai-genre, although to appreciate that, one has to be familiar with the usual approach to the genre.

I see it as more of a parody than anything else, but at the same time the main character is acting like a real person more so than the vast majority of his transported-to-a-magic-rpg-world brethren, and the world in itself is no less believable than that of other authors.

One... more>> fair warning for everyone actively avoiding anything to do with NTR (not really netorare here though) :

Spoiler

Potential heroines get introduces, but they either bang other people, or obviously aren't into the MC. He doesn't really pursue anyone romantically though, so as an NTR hater myself it was a little awkward at times, but it adds to the novels charm somehow.

[collapse]

I absolutely recommend this novel to anyone who has read at least one 'regular' isekai-litrpg novel before. <<less

This series is comedic gold and the author is a genius. This is like Konosuba on crack, and seldom does a reading a novel make me actually burst out laughing.

Just like Konosuba, the series isnt meant to be taken too seriously and is basically parody on the isekai troupe. The MC is an ugly middle aged man reincarnated into a fantasy world and is treated as the ugly middle aged man he is. He has to deal with the fact that he aint getting no Kirito treatment and tries his... more>> best to survive.

The MC is also a parody level megape*vert and the way he injects his s*xual fantasies into every mundane internal monologue is funny as heck. In fact, every character in the series are insane in some way, which makes the interactions extremely ridiculous and funny.

All of this the author somehow manages to wrap up in an oddly wholesome blanket of comradery and nation building, and thats what really makes it so legendary. Highly recommended. <<less

Well, this my first review in here so I apologized if it is a bit biased or not objective.

So after I see so many 1 star rating happened, I quite sure most of reader is too uncomfortable with MC inner thinking.

I admit that this novel truly one of the unique story with erot*c but comedic with a tinge of s*xual frustation of an old man that showed through his inner thinking.

MC is ugly even god give up to give him a handsome looks, instead god give him Max Level healing... more>> with enormous mana. Full of worst inner thinking of woman, you could say he is virg*n with s*xual frustation want to have a s*x with a girl but a virg*n ones.

He has 2 aims;

  1. Getting youth potion
  2. Have a s*x with virg*n
There is many potential female that like the MC but because the MC keep getting misunderstanding about them, especially about their v*rginity, MC didn't even try to touch them. And also most of the girl is Lolis.

MC is worst lo*icon but gentlemen. I admit the MC could hold his lust very good, and he only reflect his lust on his inner thinking. This old man is realize that he is ugly so he is a bit sceptical with his appearence and try to looks cooler with his action even thought it is not changing that he still ugly.

His conversation with other character show that he is the type that choose logical choice and has calm manner albeit in the special condition he choose the risky ones. But I warn you that every conversation he did with female most of it contain s*xual inner thinking.

I review this novel based on the MC as, the world building in this novel is, well, bad but not worst and also most of the story is from MC viewpoint. I remind you that after vol 9 above the world building is getting better.

This novel, honestly, not an anti to other isekai novel nor a satire for isekai. More like a unique story that evade any normality in isekai but choose to embrace the erot*c without too sexual.

s*xual frustation, erot*c inner thinking, and loli warning, is just a spice that make this novel unique.

The reader that already read from vol 1 maybe feel uncomfortable with the assault of MC erot*c inner thinking. Most of the reader thinking this is s*xual harrasment and degrade womens, but for me, honestly, I am man and understand about it when I watch p*rn or hentai. In reality, I, or maybe other people, after watching p*rn or hentai or other that incite such lustful drive, thinking about how I want to have a s*x like that with somebody or loved ones and how interesting the hentai. Its relatively normal.

But I remind you that MC has s*xual frustation, still virg*n until 30 years old, no s*x experience whatsoever, only beat a meat from AV and other erot*c media. The excessive s*xual thinking from the MC is one of the form of his frustation and his helpness to get s*xual statisfaction.

MC predator? NO

Potential predator? Maybe Yes

Honestly, this novel deserve more rating maybe 3.7, but not all reader like me so it cant be helped. <<less

It's a comfortable read. The MC, Tanaka, is humorous and down to earth. No unnecessary angst or baggage here. Just a man out to try and enjoy life.

This reads much like your typical Slice of Life with the occasional subplot or adventure arc to liven up the routine. The main highlight of this novel would have to be the demeanor and background of the main character. He's very genuinely just a normal person with relatable motives and a clear mindset. The side characters also fit into the story and are... more>> not just decorations like you see all too often in novels of this genre.

My main complaint here is the author's use of RPG mechanics/JRPG tropes throughout the storyline. It's just not very fleshed out or well-thought through. Then again, this doesn't detract too much from the main story since the focus is oftentimes not placed on Tanaka's abilities per se but rather on his daily life and occasional ventures and neither of the above interferes too heavily with the story at large. I wish the author would have put some consideration into this topic however, the read would have been much more enjoyable to me. <<less

I mean this is a good novel... with several big "IFs" after.

IF you don't mind cucked characters, don't mind NTR, don't mind s*xual tension (in a R-15 novel where nothing happens or will happen) and generally making fun of every single cliché MC on Japanese media... by taking the worst aspects of those characters and tuning everything to 11.

It's one of those where you reeeeally have to be in the mood for something that makes no sense, is generally doing things to end as the bu*t of the joke and... more>> relishes on injuring the reader for "expecting" anything...

It's a comedy, but a sadistic comedy, a painful comedy, an incredibly well done satire.

I personally found it both annoying and funny... it's a mixed bag, because the intent of the author is to NOT make a novel like "that", by doing a novel like "that" in the most ridiculous way possible.

The humor for me was a hit and a miss every other joke, and we always end up coming back to the single original gag, but it's not as if that's the only joke, there are plenty of jokes... it's just that the main one is annoying after the first couple of VOLUMES (and will continue that way till the novel ends and then it's not because you got a pay off no no no no no, you're too naïve, the gag stays and you're F'd if you expected any kind of progression)

It's too meandering, too obnoxious, too dragged on, EVERYTHING you've hated in all this novels is here and MULTIPLIED to eternity.

All this to make fun of this kinds of novels

I love it and hate it at the same time... because I understand the intent behind it, it's pointing at itself and screaming "LOOK HOW FRIKKEN RIDICULOUS I AM" to cast a HUGE shadow on all the authors that have written this kinds of stories.

So... reader beware, don't come expecting a "good" novel of this kind, come and see WHY all those novels are dumb because this one showcases every single aspect of those on purpose. <<less

This MC is everything that is wrong with Japanese MC. Brainless pussified to the extreme and apologizes for everything. It is a chore to sit through and read this through this awfully terrible written character's eyes. The god that resurrected him should have thought better and just let things be, maybe then this novel would have ended on the prologue.

Sorry for my English but this novel really turn from ok to bad because of protagonist contradict his characteristic too much and his s*upidity hurt my brain. (Prob as much as my English skill going to hurt your)

Protagonist seem to lack common sense, first of all he know that his male "friend" can't control his s*xual desire, but he let him get near his crush anyway even though he already saw what was happening while they were hunting a dragon. Maybe because he want a benefit from being with... more>> him, but then he refuse a noble daughter even though she's rich and by just playing with her, he can get his dream house in a matter of time but "no" cause she is annoying.

Then it come to his relationship with his crush, first of all. What's wrong with him!?

It's not like he has any moral standard or anything. He just keep thinking about s*x and other perversion.

He has no problem seeing women get r*ped because he understand "her perversion", he has a gut to buy hooker, he has no problem flirting with dark elf, and yet he can't make himself to flirt with his crush.

He risk his life to obtain that house, but he gave it away for s*upid reason, even though he can benefit from staying there. Since he want to learn how to make youth potion, he can live with teacher and ask her anytime he want, he will also have additional study time.

I feel like protagonist goal is pointless, from his position now, he can acquire everything he want in just 1 chapter, House + Wife and children, it would be better if it's a story of protagonist trying to protect what he earned. But no he just blow every progress he has in just 1 chapter for s*upid reason. <<less

MC wants to do le*d stuff. Criminally so. He even has girls throwing themselves at him willingly... Which he promptly refuses because they are not virg*ns...

He spends volumes trying to do something, then abandons it at the last step because the price is too high. His starting ability could solve that in a heartbeat...

Finally gets the go ahead to woo the main heroine. She gets instantly written out of the story, apparently permanently. She was integral to many things until now...

Meanwhile most of the text at this point is about... more>> what sort of depravity he wants to commit, but has never once done in 4 volumes so far... I have no reason to believe this will change.

It's a deconstruction of the standard OP isekai and beta male MC. The MC is OP but the beta male characteristics are turned up.

The author is absolutely brilliant and keeps stringing things along, throwing in surprise elements and tying things up unexpectedly in ways that work cohesively. Plot points aren't just forgotten and dropped, they in fact are all worked back in at a later time. That is the mark of a great writer, or rather one of the marks, and this author ticks off a bunch of them.

On a... more>> superficial first glance, it's a self insert tr*sh isekai. But the way the author keeps spinning Tanaka's thought processes and subtly performs world building in the background, he achieves that near impossible impression of bad writing or clueless self insert. But it's not actually possible to do that while being a bad writer, because writing it out that way actually requires being a great writer. You have to plan things out but make it look like none of it was planned. But obviously it has to be planned or else how would plot points persist and be resolved and new characters constantly being introduced and growing throughout if the writer didn't plan and wasn't capable?

There is a corollary in acting, where it's very difficult to actually pull off fake bad acting. Great actors are great actors, non-actors are just bad. But the non-actors miss out on displaying all the things that would express how bad they are at acting, they instead tend to become wooden and just aren't expressive. But a role that is supposed to be played off as bad acting requires emoting, a sort of wink and nudge of this person can act but is not acting well in this scene/role for a reason. So the meta is actually great acting to display someone that is bad at acting.

And so that is what we have here. It's played off as isekai tr*sh but it's simply too well developed and has too many themes and too much social commentary to be bad. So at the surface level, you'll have takes of "it's so bad it's good" or "it's pure tr*sh". But then if you critically read you start reading subtext and trying to get into the author's mind, and he does such a brilliant job of hiding things and making you really wonder.

I highly recommend this LN. I don't know that an ending can be written for something like this though, so as long as you can accept that, just going along for the ride is great. <<less

This story is freaking hilarious and oddly wholesome.

For some as*hole reason people keep giving this story a 1 star.

Like why? this freaking master piece of a good story that has some historical facts of human disgusting behavior etched in every page is a reality people should accept during medieval times just to get that good taste enjoyment due to how horrid it was...

I love how the pe*verted thoughts are awfully so unique that it speaks to the male audience quite well.

I'm MTL'ing and I can't stop, but I needed to make a review to have some time, since it was just too funny. Let me describe the appeal of this story for those curious about it. First, this novel is not recommended for those easily triggered by names.

First of all, this novel is a parody of the genre. You know the usual generic harem hero, he is bullied or is ugly, but he has a heart of gold, then he shows his power, he doesn't even try but gets all... more>> the girls? In Atelier Tanaka, the genre is subverted. MC is a 36yo man, he is a Wizard (30+yo virg*n), and quite paranoiac in regards to STDs, hence, he got healing powers from the god of isekai, he wanted to be handsome, but god refused. He is ugly, and has an even uglier heart, he saves the girl and expects a reward? But that doesn't happen.

So, he goes to an adventurer guild and gets partnered with a 1 guy 2 girls trio, when they reach the place of the first mission, the 3 were having s*x right in the next room. That's the sort of love luck he gets here. Some small spoiler from the start of the second arc, so you can have a small taste of what you will get here.

Spoiler

One of those two later gets in love with him, gets to his house together with former boyfriend and confesses her absolute love to him, in front of the cucked guy, but because he is a friend, and Tanaka doesn't want "used goods", he refuses, and tries to tie both together, but Lolibit*h is serious, and does everything she can to get his d*ck. Oh, the girl he likes eventually put her own pee on his tea as a form of harassment... He liked, and she kept doing it for the thrill.

[collapse]

In regards to power, MC got pretty much all the necessary for maximum healing, so his healing is Max, his magic recovery is Max, his MP is ridiculously high, and he has the INT to support maximum healing. The other undocumented cheat is the ability to earn and use Skill Points, so he can easily "learn" magic. To counter that, however, his Luck is terribly low, and with his bad luck in general, they should be related.

In regards to women, Tanaka is, of course, unlucky, but if we are talking males, males are usually very friendly towards him, but he doesn't care, he wants a harem, and he is a virg*n, so he is quite "easy" to entice. He has some unconventional ideas sometimes that somehow works, for example, the use of "Little Girls Network", where he gives some money to random little girls on the street, asks something and gets an answer (They are not always right), both allowing his to continue his search and "healing his heart". There are some crazy ideas for the most idiotic reasons.

The narrative is in first person, however sometimes the POV changes to Sophia (the maid, also the one Tanaka likes the most [Possible main heroine?]), and both use very personal ways of talking. Sophia is always stressed out, but trying to appeal to guys, while Tanaka is constantly thinking about who he wants to bang, and what he needs to get there, he always addresses everyone by a nickname in his mind, like Lolib*tch, Princess b*tch, Loligon, Loli Muchimuchi, Dark Muchimuchi, Loli Big Tits, Royal p**sy, and so on. (I'm not repeating characters here, each nickname is a different girl.)

Oh, MC is a lo*icon, not that he likes children, but because there is a better chance that they have their hymen intact.

As you can see, that's the level of Main Character we have in this story, but the other characters around can be just as crazy (or unlucky), and that's what makes everything fun to read. <<less
