After traversing to the end of the Yuan dynasty but just before the start of the Ming dynasty, Lin Yuan originally prepared to follow in the footsteps of his time travelling seniors. Invent tanks, cannons, and steam engines while gaining underlings and dominating the world.

However, before he realized it, Lin Yuan’s followed by a crowd of impoverished and destitute people——

“Follow after Boss! There will be food to eat!”

“Follow after Boss! No more starvation!”

The goal is to dominate the world, the tragic reality however is more about building and farming.

This is a story about a straight(?) Gary Stue protagonist ‘forced’ into becoming a male living Buddha.

Realistic yet idealistic transmigration novel. For me, the charm of this novel lies in the multiple POV of major and minor characters. It highlighted the impact of the major characters to the life of the commoners.

MC is like the in-between of a Gary Stu and a proper strong MC. If he was made to be more relatable, it would've been nice. But because of the position he holds, as a reader, he felt distant. The novel wants the readers to sympathize more with the commoners and their POV so it... more>> was reasonable for me. I think it was quite novel to relate more on the povs of minor characters who will only appear in one or a few chapters than the MC.

I've been looking for a novel like this for a long time. It's about continuous improvement. Truly, it's a wish fulfillment novel taken up a shot. I like how it took years to accomplish what Lin Yuan wanted. There are no wars fought without sacrifice and changes are not forced because he understands that the ancients have different values.

There were no real challenges in this novel. I know that problems will be solved perfectly. Although the characters' growth seems fast paced, note that it is told as if years have passed. I like how it never focused on romance. It's just part of it. Although, there is more room for growth in terms of conveying relationship development when it comes to writing this novel. The buildup of the romantic entanglements of the MC and ML were drowned by the various happenings in turbulent times. What they have is not a love full of burning passion common in romance novels and it is fine. But it would've been nice if I can see more sides of the characters.

Spoiler

My favorite character is Song Shizhao. I swear, he had more presence than the ML, Chen Baisong. He has a charm as a character and his end was more dramatic than Lin Yuan or Chen Baisong, which was not mentioned much. I cried when Song died.

[collapse]

Although the rating is 5, I think this novel will be a forgettable one for me. It did not take me to a rollercoaster of emotions. Whether sadness or happiness. What had me going is because I was invested in seeing how the commoners life will be better.

Note: Seriously needs an editor. But the problems are mostly typographical errors. The narrative is still understandable and well-translated if you're gonna ask me. <<less

fantastic kingdom building novel with a verrrrry small dose of romance. But absolutely love the novel for creating an awesome inspiring realistic emperor MC.

plot -> the story is pretty grand and it makes sense. MC advances gradually over decades from a small landowner to becoming emperor. There aren't any miraculous events, no sudden power jumps or dramatic events and it's steady progress through MC's efforts. The thoughts and feelings of the MC, the mass public, his subordinates as well as his enemies are also clearly explained so it's easy to... more>> understand why they all act the way they do (and again it makes sense that they act the way they do based on how it's explained).

MC -> the ideal emperor in my head. I really enjoy reading history and Chinese history in particular and he is basically everything I imagined a good leader (especially in ancient times) to be. Intelligent, cares about the masses, pragmatic, strong willed, disciplined and ruthless. And as an extra bonus, he's also a loyal and singleminded lover. So he's absolutely one of my favorite MCs across all the novels I've read.

Spoiler

I think I especially liked his ruthlessness. Even though he cared about the masses, if they disobeyed, they were properly punished in a way that inspired fear and improved discipline. With his officials, even people he knew from the very beginning of his journey knew he wouldn't give them any chances if they truly failed his trust. He could give them more opportunities because he knew them early, but he also wouldn't let them off if they failed him. That fear was also very conducive to his reign being peaceful and his officials being obedient to his radical reforms. He was definitely a tyrant but again it was completely necessary because of the turbulence in his era as well as the extremely radical reforms (for that time period) he wanted to carry out.

When I read about Chinese history, many of the most famous emperors were ruthless in order to achieve what they wanted so it was very satisfying to see an MC that does what is necessary and the whole situation isn't painted over unrealistically like no one will ever betray or let down MC.

[collapse]

romance -> there's barely any romance but I would just like to defend MC as a partner. Some reviewers wrote that ML is pitiful and make it sound like MC a wasn't a good partner and he gave ML the bare minimum. But that isn't true.

Spoiler

1. MC isn't actually as*xual and what he wanted from the very beginning was a true partner. -≫ He was unwilling to sleep around not because he HAS NO TEMPTATION TO HAVE s*x but because he wants to only have ONE PARTNER. It's different. It is way more admirable to me that the guy stayed single and CELIBATE because he didn't want to carelessly sleep around even though he easily could have. He wanted a partner he could genuinely trust and who he cared about, and who wanted him because of him and not because of his power and authority. And that person was ML.

2. MC is pretty calm and rational compared to ML but that doesn't mean his feelings for ML weren't genuine -> firstly that's just his personality from the beginning. Secondly, MC's focus in his first or second life has never been love and at the point that he and ML struck up their relationship, he was in his late 30s and also an emperor so yeah it's normal to not be head over heels and to be more clinical and level headed about his feelings for ML. But his actions show his love for ML.

    1. He didn't sleep with a single person (in his first or second life) until ML
    1. he lived the rest of his life with ML only
    1. he didn't bother to hide his relationship with ML (officials knew about it and his family knew about it)
    1. he admitted ML into his own family (he said his own niece and nephew are ML's as well).
    1. he ordered that he would be buried in the same coffin as ML when they both died because ML cared about it (even though MC himself wasn't superstitious and didn't think it mattered)
    1. He trusted ML with his secrets (like who was next in line to the throne)
    1. He gave ML genuine authority throughout ML's life (he allowed ML to keep his army even when ML was living in the capital. It's mentioned in the novel that ML returned to his training camp after he slept with MC. This shows he kept his army and his army was situated very close to or within the capital itself. And no other military general had this right.).

So yes he was cool and calm about his feelings but he also genuinely shared his life with ML and expressed his feelings in his own way.

3. They weren't equal in their dynamic in that MC is clearly the one in control throughout the relationship but again that doesn't mean their relationship wasn't genuine -> Every relationship is different, and a relationship doesn't have to be one of equals for it to be genuine, and it's ok for one party to be more dominant as long as both parties are happy with this dynamic.

And with MC and ML, their dynamic was unequal from the very beginning. Not just in rank but they weren't equals even in their thoughts or actions. ML wanted to support and protect MC, he never thought of himself as MC's equal. So why would it change just because they're now romantically involved and why must it change for it to be real? And it's not like ML wanted power or authority, he just wanted to be with MC, so why does it matter whether MC recognized him publicly or not? MC and ML had a relationship dynamic that was uniquely theirs and they were happy with it.
[collapse]

So yeah I think MC was a good partner and MC and ML's relationship was great. I thought it was particularly sweet that MC had one person he could really trust and live his life with after being alone for so long.

all in all, I love this book. It's a wonderful breath of fresh air and it's honestly difficult to find a historical kingdom building/ political novel with a plot that genuinely flows throughout. <<less

Honestly my favorite parts of the novel were the other POV chapters. The author takes the time to show how the changes/kingdom building impacts the citizens. And even makes you feel sympathy for soldiers/leaders on the MC's enemy side. It's realistic in the way that it shows the misery of poverty and war. But of course, unrealistic in the way the MC changes history and is extremely competent haha. You do see his character slowly change from an average person to someone who adapts to great power.

The romance is minimal,... more>> even until the last few chapters. I like the pairing but don't expect much romance.

I really enjoyed it but it is quite the hefty novel and characters that are introduced often appear again eventually so you shouldn't take too long breaks or you might forget who someone was. <<less

I laughed, and I cried, especially when Song Shizhao passed away due to old age."You are my one and only prime minister" OH GOD! This sentence really pieced my heart. I cried so hard on this part. I also wept alot when I thought back to the time when Lin Yuan first met all these important characters to where they are right now.

Every characters are likeable in his/her own way. Moreover, I really love Chen Baisong and Lin Yuan's relationship. Actually, I LOVE all the relationships between Lin Yuan and all those important individuals.

The journey has been wonderful! Words couldn't express how much I love this story, the MC, ml, and all the important people! Out of thousands of novel that I have read, I haven't seen a novel that can make me love all the characters like I did with this story! COULD YOU IMAGINE IT? Oh how I wish there were more extra chapters or chapters which all these characters could reincarnated in the modern world.

PS: This might not be your cup of tea and some parts may become a bit boring. However, once you started reading, I hope you enjoy reading it til the very end.

I came for the BL and stayed for the incredible world building.

This story is a true gem. Our MC has a believeable character growth that is only emphasized by how people perceive him and what his goals become.

He is also everything I ever wanted in a time travel protagonist. He has a modern pov, fights for equality and is not tempted by other people to go against his believes.

What I found most refreshing was ... more>>
Spoiler

that he refused to create a harem or have lovers. Maybe even thought of being considered an asexual.

[collapse]
at this point I was even very happy that the romance was close to non existent.

The romance. Yes technically this is BL since the s*x scenes are implied and the lover is male. But this is less of a true falling unconditionally in love with someone story but more of gaining respect of a person, trusting them fully and hoping that they will stay by your side story.

I should add that this story has over 40 chapters that could be technically called epilogue! I never had a story like this!
Spoiler

Where the MC finally became emperor and you could see his struggles and successes. I adored the last chapters where we saw what happend after our MC passed

[collapse]

This story also has a lot of POVs that realistically show the reader the hard and brutal reality of the people that are living in the time period. These made me tear up more than once and truly showed how cruel famine and war is. I think this made the story so much more believable. The Translation sadly is passable. There are quiet a few grammatical errors and many things sound kinda strange. It feels as if an Editor was missing.

Though I'm not able to read the original novel and can't judge if the original text wasn't written like that.

Don't read it for the romance, it is in no way the focus of this novel. If it wasn't labeled as such I would not be able to tell.

Lots of empire building stuff. The whole story is MC making his cities better.

Momentarily dropping because it got repetitive, like there will never be a surprising plot point. He just rules over another city and then another one dozens of chapters later. I'm not even half way through but I think I can confidently predict how it'll end. I love kingdom building... more>> type of novels and it's pretty good, just long and you wouldn'tmiss anything if you skim it. Feels like there's lots of filler would be the best way to describe it.

Think I'll finish this eventually though because I enjoy it. <<less

A good story that illustrates brutal realities and the tricks of governance without indulging in them -- a REALISTIC epic that shows research and understanding of economies. Not much BL, to the point that some homophobes were tricked into reading it. After all, you don't read books like this for fluff, but for perspective. Even so, it is easy to read, and the emotional line is there, a single bright thread gently woven in the second half. Meticulously done. Five stars.

I think maybe it because I took a break from reading any novel that make think that this danmei is really good. I enjoyed every chapter in this danmei. The way the MC have a progress on his character, the way the author use word in this danmei is very fascinating. But I actually wait for the romantic parts of this novel. It's take too long and quite sudden. Until ch 150 there still no romance. But I like the way they are loving each other.

review as of chapter: 45/191

Strengths

    • Incredibly resourceful MC, with a good heart and sly leadership tactics. Interesting to see how he grows to use more ruthless tactics for the greater good... MC is mature and acts like he should (having been an underdog officeworker who navigated office politics to go into exec management). MC appropriately utilises his historical knowledge to escape upcoming war and starvation
    • MC at times shows vulnerability and there's quite a bit of character exploration. E.g.
      Spoiler

MC is worried he is becoming overly ambitious and feels guilty when his villagers die, and feels extreme stress given the large scope of his responsibilities. Also nice how he acknowledges his modern way of thinking and how it conflicts with the ways of the past.

      [collapse]
    • Also interesting exploration of morality vs greater good when MC realises he needs to employ darker methods to remain in control as the effective pillar of his makeshift village
      Spoiler

MC realises that he needs to set effective examples/ punishment - e.g. chopped off heads of bandit leaders in front of their subordinates, kicking out dissenters, employing reward/bait tactics, rewards for reporting dissenters, and encouraging rumours that he is Buddha incarnate - as devout spiritual belief > loyalty and gratitude, raiding bandits, sparking rebellions, searching and seizing resources from wealthy households...

      [collapse]
    • Great detail and journey into how MC founds his own remote village MC constructs a dorm, bribes and purchases resources, gathers people, develops farmland and production lines (soybean oil, farming grains and grain storage, gunpowder and fake jade manufacturing, vine armour, blacksmithing, clothing...) and creates a cohesive military-like village composed of refugees, trafficked s*aves and bandits.
    • There are often snapshots of side characters and their lives - with lots of sad and grim stories involving starvation and survival tactics - children being sold, women r*ped, people dying of starvation.
      Spoiler

Most recent chapter had a short vignette from the POV of a salt miner who rebelled following MC's guidance, but then dies having not tasted any success/reward

      [collapse]
    • MC and ML don't get together immediately. In fact, ML initially refuses to join MC's village as he needs to take care of his bandit brethren. ML seems to be a relatively smart, strong with a sense of integrity and leadership.
    • Side characters are plenty and there is lots of teamwork, with some main figureheads
      Spoiler

(MC's blood sworn brothers) including a minor official (always used for negotiating with merchants, scouting etc.), a former loan shark (extremely loyal, trustworthy and the 'brawn' but dumb), a weak scholar (often consulted for tactics, knowledge of what's happening now, fan of darker tactics), and a peasant who is historically destined to be a military leader/emperor (currently being trained up in military tactics)

      [collapse]
Weaknesses

    • Zero sense of romance. ML appears in like 4 chapters out of the 45 I've read as a side character. MC's sworn blood brothers get a lot more focus than ML. Would like more ML exploration
    • Heavy/sole focus on MC's village undertakings and subsequent expansions, with some humorous injections - so if that bores you, look away. Reminiscent of the farm tenants/windmill building arc in To rule in a turbulent world and the initial doomsday prepping in Reborn otaku guide to the apocalypse
    • Lots of side characters, which can be hard to keep track.

I got hook right away at the first chapter but then the excited feeling just fade and I don't think it's my cup of tea ಥ_ಥ

It's a politic kind of novel with some world-view from author. A good food for brain I think. Those who know a little bit of history might enjoy this book.

If there is no ShonenAi tag I might think this is just typical m/f return to be king genre. There's no romance vibe at all.

The story has too many characters but except MC I don't feel... more>> like anyone important (。•́︿•̀。)

I also don't vibe with how author wrote the development of what MC has done in the passerby dialogue. Cause I just want to read about MC thought's process. It was like ((Time silently pass by and people talk about what MC did)) but how he did it?

I like the short story of commoner experience. Those unimportant character is used to convey some world-view that I might hate or sympathize with.

Spoiler

And tbvh when I first read it I thought MC would never take this route, since the title have a 'charity' I thought he might become rich dude who support the king and wisely can escape the tragedy of king's distrust. But look at the progress of how he started from farmstead to attack and acquire the cities (・ั﹏・ั) just say you want to be Emperor, ok?

Wild guess, I think MC must be working in HR department or something in his original life ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ

Rating 9 out of 10.

MTL completed, readable 90%.

It was a good read, MC was not an ambitious person, initially. His personality was soft but unyielding once he set a goal.

... more>> However as this was only a Shounen-Ai novel, his romance with ML was put on hold until the later part of the novel.

Ps: FYI, translator of this novel really loves to give spoiler in the end notes. So, if you want to feel the bittersweet feelings to guess the plot and who was the ML, I suggest you to skip the translator notes. <<less

A surprisingly good novel. I only gave it 4 stars because for something tagged shonen ai and yaoi, there basically no romance, but plot-wise it's really interesting. A nice blend of trying to use modern ideals to change a feudal society without it being so crazily different that it's unrealistic. There are many novels where a modern transmigrator changes the world through military tactics, through superior medical knowledge, through some kind of golden finger that makes them stand out. It's nice to see a novel where someone "conquers through kindness"... more>> and the pacing is good so you're always interested in what he's going to do next. Many side characters have some sort of development and their relationships change over time which is interesting to read. The author does these little snapshots of random people's lives which gives us more context to the state of the world so we can see how what the MC does affects other people, both good and bad.

Overall, if you're into novels with a good plot and don't mind a lack of romance, this is a good choice :) <<less
