Lin Qing He transmigrated into the novel and became one of its cannon fodder. The novel’s background is non-viable-1960s, time of want to eat but nothing to eat and want to wear, nothing to wear. Although the lack of supplies and life was monotonous, this wasn’t what she was concerned about because she got a small personal interspatial space, which is stuffed with supplies, so temporarily no worries about basic needs.

What she is worried about, if she remembers correctly, her three so-called sons will become big villains in the future, and their upright and cold dad will end up in an indestructible end.

Lin Qing He looked at the three future villain sons, eldest who was only five years old, the second child was only three years old, and the third child was only one year old, and decided to give them half a big white bun first…

This novel was the first C-novel that I read about transmigration into the recent past. Back then its translation had just begun. I felt it was interesting and waited for it to be completely translated to read it. Meanwhile, I read several other novels about the same period and now I see that this one is actually at the bottom in every sense.

It does not even justify its title, because it takes place in the seventies and beyond, not in the 1960s. And there is no farming, none at all!... more>> The FL adamantly refuses any farm work and she literally spends only a couple of months in the very end of 1969! And nothing impacts her at that time, she stays at home, bathes her kids, and cooks and sews and knits clothes. She could do the same in 1959 or in 1979 rural China and you won't be able to tell the difference.

The FL, a sales department manager in our times, transmigrates into autumn of 1969, the third year of Cultural Revolution. She becomes a 24 years old unemployed married woman, a step-mother to three dirty and emaciated kids living in a village separate from her in-laws. She transmigrates into a novel so she knows both the set of characters and events that will unfold, all its players, including the villainous OG and her nasty parental family, and she is from the future, well educated and skilled, so she knows what will happen in history and is not naïve. Her main goal seems to be to prevent her three step-kids from becoming villains and dying young and her husband's ill health and his early death 20 years later, in 1980s.

A month or two later her wounded 27 years old husband retires from the army and comes back home to their village on one snowy night bringing in an equivalent of ten years worth of his substantial salary, they celebrate New Year (1970) together with his side of the family and the events unfold from that point on.

Spoiler

She will eventually disclose her true identity to her husband and they will have a daughter together.

[collapse]

She is a modern university graduate and a professional woman with a sizable work experience in sales and office management, now is a barely literate housewife with three kids who spends seven years preparing (self-studying) for the first university admissions exam in China in 1977, while raising the OG's three sons aged 1, 3, and 5, and making money by re-selling meat in the black market and later becoming a teacher in their village school. Her husband becomes a worker in the collective farm also raising two piglets (for the collective, as a way to earm work points, not for the meat for the family) and three chicken at home.

It's an OK novel, but neither good nor great. Mostly, because it really is not about what its title promises. It is neither about enjoying village life in the 1960s nor about farming. It instead glorifies city life in later historical periods of economic reform of 1977, especially in the capital, university level education and big bucks made from sales, from ownership of the capital city shops, and the products from the later periods (the FL brings them with her in her private space, she has three days to prepare for the transmigration into the past!). Not only their family of 6 never does farming, or owns a farm, they all move to the capital and bring dozens of relatives with them, far away from the 1960s and even 1970s and from farming.

Other reviewers provide plenty of spoilers and criticism with which I agree. I thought it was a five star novel when I started reading it in the past, but when I tried to read it now, all I see is how poor and mediocre it is as a story, as a novel about another novel. Not worth my time. <<less

Overall

Ahh, such a journey. We follow the MC for so many years, for 700 chapters T^T It has basically almost everything I want in this type of genre. Some of the endeavours were detailed, some weren't, but so many were done that I couldn't stop reading. It is truly slice of life, getting rich with family and friends haha Yes, it's definitely not perfect and there were some forgotten people and foreshadowing that resolved quite fast at the end but I enjoyed myself so much binge reading everything. It... more>> was very satisfying to read them set up all the pieces to be wealthy in the future. I only wish they wrote more detail of them just enjoying themselves and more people exclaiming how rich they are to make it more satisfying haha I also wish the 3 sons were main characters in the 2nd half of the story, like they were back in the village. The further along the story, the more characters are introduced and the older the kids got, the less they appear. Really, it was only the third that kinda stayed until the very end lol. But ahhh, we followed until the end of the life of the main cp so now I'm super sad and need to read a fluffy story lolol

Translation/Writing

I read the translation by Explore, Maggie. It sounds like she only did it because of COVID isolation and made daily updates, so the translation isn't perfect or polished. There are careless mistakes littered throughout. But it is much better than mtl, they included pictures whenever needed and it was perfectly understandable all the way through. There are some name mistakes and a couple of missing words/plural to non plural/gender mistakes and so on but honestly, it's very readable. The flow was uninterrupted for me.

Plot

This is a slice of life story from MC at 20+ to 40 at the end. Then a summary of everyone's lives until 90 and their peaceful death. It really follows the title of the story, raise the kids at the beginning, then develop their families in the capital and/or other cities.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

Truly a properly realistic development from poor village level to mega-rich story. With so many chapters, the author can really detail step-by-step how the cp can go from a to b and didn't skimp on the variety. At the beginning, there is a raising the family with good food arc. In between that, how to actually get the food via the black market with all the coupon restrictions in the 60s. Then there is the studying part to get to university. Then comes the capital part, where they really start doing business and really get wealthy. In between, all the family connections are being deepened and helping the others raise themselves up too. And matchmaking in the last parts.

I love all the business parts, it really ramped up at the capital. But also, in the capital, was also when the cp started going off by themselves to date or make money. It's just this part where they don't go into as much detail anymore. I would like them to describe the real estate more haha But I guess since then there is a lot of them so no need. I like how the author will periodically tell how much money was saved or how much monthly income was made in total. It really helps visualise the scale up to there.

For the side characters, there are sooo many that were given love. It made things vibrant and heartwarming because they are all family. I liked seeing how they will treat each other to food and how they can ask for help and advice and it is given. We see many of them grow up too so it feels close.

I also want to mention the setting. It is quite vivid. This is China in the olden days so the temperament of the characters matches it. I'm Chinese, though not from China, so I am familiar with the beliefs there. So I have to mention that it does get a bit annoying to read about them giving gifts to each other and then the other saying, "Aiya, no need to bring gifts ma, just yourself is enough!" Then the demurring, etc., happens. Then the other party visits the other person instead, and the exact same thing happens. Gifts, saying no, etc., Sigh, doing this a few times and when done well, like when the relatives set up shops and the MC visited there for the first time, when they gave gifts to the cp and let them stay over, I could feel the joy and sincerity because their success and happiness were due to the MC. It doesn't feel like a poor person giving to a rich person anymore, but truly equals sharing their joy. It was heartwarming. Later on, when this happens with the newer, richer people, it just feels a bit fake, even though they aren't. I guess I just don't like the demurring attitude when accepting gifts in Chinese culture. Just freaking accept the gift and say thank you and pay them back in some other way later. So much unnecessary "no you don't have to pay, no we haven't finished what you gave before, nooo I can't possibly accept this expensive thing, no you don't have to give me this thing that I also have a lot at home." Lol.

The other thing is probably also a cultural thing. This was published in 2014 and was probably written earlier. The romance mindset is kinda a typical macho man in bed, just brute forcing their way through and it is romanticised. This is true with the main cp especially vivid in the earlier chapters and even in the extras for the 2nd's daughter. The attitude in normal life is all more or less okay, just the entitlement the men have to the girl's body.

Pacing

The slice of life tag is definitely warranted. With 700 chapters, you can also read it as part get rich activities and also like those tv dramas with the family drama haha Addicting. Some parts are a little slow, some parts a little fast but overall, very slice of life.

Characters

The MC is quite stubborn and domineering. One is and two is two and nobody can say otherwise. She has a big heart for people who are good and if they are bad, straightforwardly cuts off contact decisively and immediately. She's smart and a planner. As for the ML, I don't know if I like him in particular lol. I love how much he loves his wife, his brothers, his family and how he works hard to support. But in all other aspects, he's a typical male of this period. There are some bad parts, like the s*x attitude and the preference of a daughter over the sons.

For the bad guys, wow they can really rile you up sometimes haha. All of them contribute some nice drama for the MC to conquer haha I do find that for the 2nd sister-in-law though, near the end of the village arc, it seems like she was getting okay? But then, it felt like not enough drama, lets change her to a bad guy again. Lol.

Some things that I found imperfect

- Some characters that feel like they will be a bit more important seem to have been forgotten lol Like Wang Li, the university best friend. They promised for the child to be the MC's godchild, but the character was forgotten until hundreds of chapters later and then, it was only a summary.

- The progression of the godchild relationship when the MC got pregnant was way too fast for me. She was there for like four months only. Also, it felt a bit hypocritical of the MC in how well she treated them. The Jiang family very quickly suggested to each other if they wanted to create a godchild relationship for the kid and the parents were very willing to climb up this capital family. But the MC were also quite willing to let them. It kinda feels weird that this family wants to use the MC to raise up, the MC lets them so fast while others who are worse off does not because of bad character or something. Sure they gave a bad impression first it still feels a too benefit seeking for this Jiang family.

- The transmigration novel's plot didn't have much of an impact in this 700-chapter story. The two leads don't do anything. They don't have any role in the story. They were like only 1/30th of the story lol I wanted more from them. Maybe make them rebirth too and make them bad in character and cause some drama haha

if you guys are wondering, the MC got together around 70-80 chaptes. For the first 70 chapters, though FL doesnt have any feelings toward ML yet, she had good attitude with the ML

[collapse]

woah my first time read novel for more than 150 chapters! Never imagine I would persist read 700 chapters in 4 days!!

this one is more like a life journey of the FL started from her transmigration to the late 60's until she became successful and had a grandchildren

actually, there's nothing particularly special but you can see the FL really had a big heart hahah. She indeed helped most of the ML family to move to the capital and willing to do it

Spoiler

hoever im a little bit uncomfortable when ML really asked for daughter, like he pestered our FL all the way (though FL was willing). But, you know FL has ligation and in her late 30's yet ML still asked and persisted on having a daughter? Why? Somehow I just felt uncomfortable when this thing was described.

[collapse]

also, what is wrong with the second family? Why did the zhou liu ni and her mother really wicked?

i sometimes wonder, instead of feeling jealous and schemed against others, why people does not try their best to achieve their dream instead? I mean you can achieve great things too right? Why spend your time plotting something bad?

A good read but:

Spoiler

Honestly the pro-life stance shown throughout the book is understandable due to circumstances and stuff and abortion is also frowned upon in east asian countries like China. HOWEVER. I dislike how the author mostly makes women in the story to be shitty people (personality wise). While the men are shown to be more rational and more understanding. It is also shown that they get well more amongst themselves and the women are just 'complicated'. Tbh its very stereotypical though understandable but for some reason oftentimes the narrative is the women shitty the men good like??? Although there was still shitty men written, women are still predominantly shown to be the scheming, lazy ones (although there are ones that are not). But for the most part the men are shown to be the good ones with no problems.

[collapse]

Overall a decent read if you don't mind repetitiveness and like the poor to rich type of story. A good pastime I suppose. <<less

Its definitely a slice of life with a transmigrated woman who won't bow to her maternal or in family nor to society. Its different than majority of stories where the FL is soft hearted to the point she would skin herself to make others happy and just smile when they use and ab*se her. This FL has a plan and with her strong personality she accomplishes it. There is some face slapping which was enjoyable, not gonna lie with her sliver tongue I was hoping for more face slapping. [I... more>> can't stress how mich I enjoyed that she was a regular in the black market! Most FL don't even think of going outside of the law. This BAMF female lead did and did so smartly. A strong AND smart FL is rare] The space is more prominent in the beginning, but in the middle its only mentioned now and then, in the end? Not mentioned until the last chapter.

I loved the wrap up and sniffled when I got to the bottom of the page. All in all I throughly enjoyed this story.

But! Where was the farming! She hates farming and her space was small storage space. No farming. I was looking forward to her farming but not disappointed that she didnt. Just the title is a bit misleading in this regard. "Black marketer" is more suited then "farm". <<less

This is a good read for anybody interested in a super long slice of life novel. There's 701 chapters in this book and none of them are unpleasant to read.

This book is about the female protagonist and her husband working hard to give their 3 sons a good life. It perfectly shows the hardships and the good times that come afterwards.

A slice of life story about struggling from rags to riches. It's a nice read without too much drama, except for family drama, which consists most of the story. And it's way too long than it should be. The author went into too much detail with the nephew and nieces. It should have been better if they in extra story summaries. I would like to gripe that why is it the nephew and nieces' romance are better than the MC's 3rd son.

The story is also a bit unique. The MC... more>> already had the space cheat before she transmigrated, and also she received hints that she will be transmigrated. Therefore, she was able to prepare and hoard supplies. Sadly, she transmigrated the day before she could take the 500 buns she ordered. I would also be sad if that happened to me.

Everything was good until they moved to the capital and started their school life, then their business empire. Kinda unrealistic how it happened, though. The author made it sound so easy. But considering it was during an era where the country has just begun to develop again, it's plausible but still doubtful.

There's not much for comedy.

Spoiler

Except for the part when the eldest son broadcasted about his mother so that the MC's admirers would stop pursuing her. After he graduated, it was the 2nd son's turn. He just imitated his eldest brother by broadcasting.

[collapse]

As for family drama, you get a lot throughout the story. There are some characters who you think will just be side tracked, but actually you'll end up liking. You'll come to like the sister-in-laws, except for one. As for the mother-in-law, sometimes you'll like her, sometimes you won't. The males in the family aren't much to say about. They're all henpecked husbands. Whether it's the grandfather, the sons, or the grandsons, they're all the same.

Would I read it again? No. Too long and would be boring to read again. <<less

Great story, the translation is a little rough around the edges but I really enjoyed it.

The story does transmigration into the past in a way that works really well, the MC isn't some super genius but she knows how to take advantage of what she knows but it doesn't stray into stuff that feels dumb like revolutionising farming techniques using stuff you've vaguely seen on TV.

The story is all about the MC raising her family, whilst she isn't a saint she does a good job of looking after her family... more>> for the most part. One thing I really appreciated is that a lot of the villains didn't end up getting their lives completely ruined, there is a branch of the family who is constantly causing trouble and although they lead less happy lives the author doesn't make awful things happen to them to punish them like in a lot of novels. <<less

It’ll be a lie if I said, I wanted to leave the story in between but I persisted and I don’t regret it. It’s a very nice but yet somehow different slice of life story. I love how realistic the MC is, and even though she got trasnmigrated halfway and picked up instant sons, she really treated them. Slow pace, slice of life. A woman is transmigrated to be a goodluck wife in the black years of modern China. Do not expect any overt dramatic change. The FL is just the ordinary Chinese woman who values family, husband and sons overy everything.

The background is good, very good. Let us understand what had happened to China and her people of that long years, how they changed from dying-from-hungry society to this day Powerful Nation.

No romance. The FL+ML = 0. Eventhough her sons'romance could be developed the novel into the... more>> very romantic one. But the author could not do it. So sad.

Read this novel in your leisure time, to ease your tensed mind.

The (original) language is so nice and smooth. The translor is very able. Though the story is very plain, like almos-no-rice congee; in the end, you'll love it. <<less

This novel contains lots of things. Many wonderful and others redundant but just as enjoyable. There’s too much for me to really put into words a accurate review of my experience reading this. Rather than a critical review of it’s writing and composition, which I too often see while scrolling through “reviews”.

But what I can say without a doubt is that-

-It was fun. It was sad. It was funny. It made me laugh. “It was worth it!”, from start to finish.

P.S. The FL is amazing and really suits... more>> my taste in smart, strong, and independent female characters. The rarity of that character in my search of Web-novels alone could make this worth the read. <<less

I've been sticking to this book for almost a year long. It truly is one of my comfort reads.

I'm not very good at detailed reviews and such, especially expressing myself when reviewing books.

But, what I can say is, if you are looking for a mid-paced story with a penchant to relax you, this story is for you. It really is an amazing story personally for me. How the main character Lin Qing He is portrayed is very satisfying.

There isn't really big dog blooded drama, yes there are some spats, especially... more>> with Second Sister-in-law and the occasional bad neighbor. But Lin Qing He and Zhou Qing Bai just brush it of and keep spreading dog food.

Their family dynamics are awesome and sometimes comedic.

If you are a bit overstuffed with all the clichéd drama filled chinese novels, this novel is truly a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend. <<less

This is really one of great back to the past, transmigration story so far.

It's very detailed. I know some would drop this when reading the first chapters saying it was too boring or lengthy but it all made sense.

All characters and the plot as well are all well written. I like how the ending included the summary of what happened to each characters.

The ML and FL lived till 90 and was very successful, it has 701 chapters and worth reading.

I love this story! It's a slice of life that is not overly focused on farming. I like how the MC has worked through all the family drama and raised the family's quality of life. It's sometimes long-winded how stories seem to drag on but still fun. It's a good read if you want a transmigration novel that focuses on cultivation, kings, emperors, princes, and downright annoying political plots. The MC has space, but it's mostly used for business, and it's not as OP as other novels where the MCs... more>> have spaces with springs, mana, energy, other creatures, and other overly fantastical things. I like how the space is literally just a space for storing, hahaha...

I love how the MC and her husband interact. They are just too cute. The man dotes on his wife but not in an overly overbearing way like in those CEO novels. Their children are also great! I also like how the story not just focuses on the MC, her husband, and children but branches out into her other family members, too, like nieces, nephews, in-laws, and more!

I tried MTLng this, but I didn't like the result, so I'm just waiting for the author to update...

I really recommend reading this if you like a transmigration novel focused on the slice of life, but the MC is not too ordinary 'cos she still has her space! <<less

A very good story! Spend a week to finish and its worth it.

The MC is not hypocrytical. She has her own principle and stick to her own beliefs.

Everyone is not over exaggerated. Like a mary sue in other novels.

The ML is a bit dull for me. I want more interactions... Sweet ones I mean.

The three child have their own paths and I'm satisfied.

Wish there is a special chapter about what happened in the future.

It's a soap opera, but a good one.

Cooking, doing business, buying properties, matchmaking, marriages, childbirth, divorces, it got them all. A very relaxing read.

I had to read a few Wikipedia articles about Chinese history (about the cultural revolution) to understand the story better, and I'm glad I did.

The translation quality so far is good. I recommend reading it.
