So, when I finished reading the main story and started with the side stories, I was already thinking about what to write in the review. I thought of writing, word to word; "This story is so beautiful, so wholesome, so heartwarming! I can't rave enough about it! A fantastic read and I absolutely love it!"

While the above statement still stands firm, I couldn't leave it at that, after reading the side stories.

I'm just...... so sad and heartbroken right now. I could not bring myself to write a bright and cheerful... more>> review anymore. The world is so cruel to people sometimes.....

Anyway!

10/10 I recommend it 100 times over!

Fantastic read!

Talking about the basta*d 2nd ML, he shows some contrast to our caring ML. The stories of his married life with our FL leaves me super mad. Cried a little too.

The 2nd ML is too unworthy. Lowkey possessive, aggressive, and not considerate to the FL. Why keep FL by his side when she suffers so much? His love gives nothing good to our FL.

Imagining if this happens irl is bad for my heart too. Letting his wife misunderstood that he's entangled with another woman, not clearing the relationship with other woman. Saddddddd.

I DO NOT REGRET reading thing this book. The love ML and FL have for each other is soo good and pure and warm. They always supported each other on the lowest points of their life. The struggle shown was so real that they deserve every point of happiness in their life. Although the novel has ended I hope they are still living their living their life to fullest.

I read this a year ago and it / the leads have been in my thoughts since then. They're so supportive of each other, love with their whole being and truly good people. They also read closer to real people with varied emotions than most lead characters do in these types of novels. This is one of my favourite quotes from the book,

"No matter where you go, wherever I am, I hope you will be brave and strong."

"I love you the most."

It shows that love to them isn't possession... more>> and that they seriously only want the best for each other.

It was so good! Finished this in two days whew what a journey. Also I'm really glad to see the different culture in the 70s-80s. I think of how much we take everything now for granted while our ancestors were working so hard for a piece of pork 😭

Very satisfying read.

Read the reviews, saw it was highly rated, took that with a grain of salt but decided to give it a try anyway.

I’ve been burned so many times after reading the reviews praising some of these tr*sh novels to have and back, but I can say I was not disappointed.

Smart and charming characters, well thought out story line, fluffy, but not without reason. I really enjoyed.

4.5/5, highly recommend

Perhaps I read too much laid back novels recently that I had a washing eyes day as I read this novel. It's truly beautiful, and somehow gave me a bittersweet aftertaste at the ending. Wishing Songbai and Lanxiang a peaceful life forever after.

This is honestly such a good novel. Very emotional, the ML is not a cliche with no personality. This one needs to be made into a show or something. The MC/FL is a strong and emotionally mature woman. The past life stuff is so bittersweet. I would definitely recommend it to people who appreciate josei genre, it's one of the best works I've read from this genre.

PS: Vegetarians should skip the food discussion 🤣🤣🤣

Overall, I liked the story. I love the relationship between the FL and ML but there are a lot of things that left me unsatisfied with the whole story and one of it is the FL's relationship with her ex-husband. In her rebirth, the reason on why he fully gave up on her is not explained properly. While in the previous life I feel unsatisfied on how things ended with them and if the "other" woman and the ex-husband's family is even punished. Writing/Translation

I read the translation by Serena Love. The translation is not the best but not the worst either. Everything was mostly legible and any mistakes is easily autocorrected in the head while reading. There were some pronoun errors but it is fine. The only problem is that sometimes I feel like I don't understand what is happening (probably because it was edited from MTL) but you can usually ignore it or guess the meaning. Sadly, there aren't many footnotes or explanations of idioms. Luckily, this isn't an ancient China... more>> novel so while it is an issue, it doesn't affect the main pros of the story much.

Plot

The plot is slice of life, people working hard to improve the quality of life of the people they love. So there is conflict but it is smoothed over eventually. The conflicts that arise feel like they got stakes but it wasn't a too insurmountable feeling. I do feel that the choice to separate at just before the happy ending felt flimsy though. But we got through that part pretty fast so it is okay.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

Rags to riches, heartwarming scenes, earnest romance and supporting a downtrodden and beaten young man with life, warmth and good food. Achieved it all. The feelings held by the main couple were so sweet and filled with honey, you could feel the depth of it. The FL didn't really take charge of making money in reality as I expected from the synopsis but it was more she was there to support the ml's efforts by giving nudges, ideas, helping hands, love, warmth and comfort. Surprisingly, the food part was not even half as much in the story as in the Ancient Foodie. But it was nice to read about it. Ahh, the feels here were very good.

The time period also played such a big role in the story as expected of it being in the title haha. I learnt a lot about how things were back then in China. It was so different from how I have always lived. A fresh and eye-opening experience.

Pacing

Pacing was good, I didn't feel like anything was too long or too short.

Characters

I love the main couple and the ML the most! He's so rootable and cute haha. His feelings have touched me deeply. The FL is spunky haha. There's nothing much to say about her but I love her love for her old man and the changes she affected in his life. The side characters are all unique and relatable, which made me root for them too! Especially, the close friends and family. The main villains, surprisingly isn't the ex-husband (he's really kinda a minor one in screentime lol). The main villain wasn't really developed and is just really a plot device lol They were okay haha

Overall Comments

This story is really like reading honey! The romance or well, the feelings of the main couple weren't really like, I love her! I love her I love her! S*x s*x s*x like in other novels. You really read about how, yes, they love each other romantically but also how much you want them to live a good life and to succeed in life. How they will think and act in each other's best interests while living life. It wasn't a story about how to get into each other's pants though there is that, it was about how they could improve each other's happiness and wellbeing. It's very wholesome and sweet.

Fun story novel. Everyone should give it a try. ML and FL have a great chemistry, no major misunderstanding and they don’t hide things from each other. Like everyone has written in the reviews this story won’t let you down.

MC left the city and volunteer for that 70' Chinese countryside youth program (idk the name) not to chase her future hubby, but to prevent him from ten years of prison life and wasting his youth. Best girl, you go auntie

This story taught readers that you don't have to be that desperate and muddle-headed just to marry a man who might or might not be the version of the partner you wanted, but you have to put your counterpart's wellbeing and happiness first.

A very easy to read, inspiring and heartwarming story. No cheat, No OP-ness of the FL, just a very realistic slice of life but wrapped in the warm and drama free story telling. I love how they endure everything together especially all the hardships, and how they strive to keep their love. Love all the characters' development. Love how this story make me drowned in the sweetness yet crying from the heartfelt storyline, especially the looping love story of MC and ML. A must read if you love 70's theme... more>> love story with a family oriented focus point, no unnecessary drama but still have realistic plot. 💖💖💖 <<less

So so good. Absolutely so so good. ML is so good and MC is so good. They're both so good. I love them so much. The story is very well written but the translation may be somewhat off since it was only MTL'd. Still, did not take away the fact that it is very good, very heartwarming and bittersweet at times. I'm used to rich rich and rarely came upon characters who have to work so hard and take up odd jobs just to survive.

I really love the characters, ... more>> they're so good. The flow is good, the characters are good. The prologue is good too!

I just think it was kinda OOc for MC to leave ML for ex-husband to protect him without telling him. It would be more in line with here character to tell him, then poof. In the end, ML learned of Mc's rebirth too.

A bit hard to read, not sure if it's because of too literal translations or it was originally like this from the raw source; But I felt so fulfilled after I finished this. I can't express with words at how satisfied I am from finishing this. Superb execution, great ending and epilogue, amazing bonus stories. If you love fluffy slice of life/romance/drama and can bear with slightly hard to read sentences, then please by all means try to read this until the end. It is very satisfying.

sweet but stressful.

Author fully explores what it was like living under communism and obviously it was bad. So the fluff and sweet moments were good but also, the constant dread of being caught by the authorities was exhausting and a little too real sometimes.

Well written novel but slow burn to success. If the tags appeal to you then you'll probably like this story.

The translator did a great job in choosing this story.

The author incorporated all the right elements in the characters.

A headstrong, intelligent, and resourceful FL with just the right amount of sass. She's very loveable.

On the other hand, the ML's endeavors and how he triumped over them made this an enjoyable read.

I learned a lot of lessons and I can clearly see the values of the author in how all the characters were presented.
