There has been a lot of gossip in the upper circle of capital city lately.

Rich anonymous 1: I heard that the abducted daughter of Mayor Chen’s family was finally found, it’s rumored that she was sold to the deep remote mountain area and had suffered a lot.

Rich anonymous 2: I heard that the daughter of Mayor Chen’s family is a fool, she claims that she can see ghosts everyday.

Rich anonymous 3: I heard that the daughter of Mayor Chen’s family forcibly kissed Minister Lou’s family third son.

(Everyone with frightened faces: She dares to provoke Lou Ming?!)

Chen Yu pushed Lou Ming onto the sofa and kissed him for a while.

Chen Yu said: “Don’t worry, third brother; I will be responsible for you.”

Lou Ming was stunned.

Chen Yu secretly thinking: “How long will I have to wait before I get to kiss third brother again…”

Completed main story.

This novel took a while to get into but you'll be in your a ride if you end up sticking with it. The novel is not heavily base on romance between the lead so you won't get too much dog food, but, it was the past romance that give suspense and depth to the novel. this shouldn't be a novel that you'll regret reading it. At least for me.

The novel can be divided into two parts. 1st: a ghost hunting slice of life with a slice of comedy,... more>> 2nd: the meaty part of the plot, sprinkled with mystery and action throughout.

This is one of the novel that I felt intrigued by the world and the side chara (xiang nan and lao wu TT). The metaphysical setting were a treat to read about since I have been on a modern binge recently, and the side character + the ghost story we get to see was quite a treat as well. This aspect kinda reminds me of the author work 'rebirth at step civil bureau'. I think if the author delve more in the other side chara story, it'll deff be better.

as for the leads, I have nothing much to say and they really didn't stand out to me. My fav charac somehow became the FL grandpa. I felt like there was suspense about his background that was slowly unraveling plus being an esport grandpa... who can say no? (His tsun tsun character is also cute ><)

one small pet peeve of mine but what is the lead exact age? Like only FL exact age was given (i thought she was 19 early on in the novel but she was 18??) and the ML was touching 30. <<less

Pretty attention grabbing just be aware that the ch are weirdly put on here. The first tler didn't count ch the normal way, and so ch 71 (or 2 I forget) isn't the actual correct number, it's ch 50smth and is marked that way on the 2nd tl site, so if u read on a pirate site -which is sorta inevitable bcs there's 10 or 20 missing ch in the beginning bcs of a dead link- when going to sleepy tl just chose the first ch they have posted, bcs... more>> that's the correct one.

Very MC focused and has some tropes I usually find irritating but I was very meh about it reading this and it didn't bother me. Pale skin complex is very much thrown at your face, not by the MC, but by the people around her. Mention of skin whitening products, which are def not smth anyone should use but which is very wide spread in some parts of Asia. There was a super big focus on MC, as said prior, so most of the side charas were just used as garnish.

Some parts contradict each other, and the background is a bit lacking, we never find out some facts that are very much part of the plot. Like
Spoiler

how she got kidnapped or how they first met

[collapse]

Somewhat abrupt development in the last parts of the story, but other than that a very easy to digest novel. <<less

It was okay. However it wouldn't be pleasant for those who are looking for cold, mature, and lowkey FL. The FL here is childish, naive, money-grubbing, and loud lol. The ML was also okay. He's levelheaded and doting, not at all the usual domineering CEO type.

What I love the most about this is the grandpa. He stole the show lol. I love his banters with the FL and his lackadaisical attitude of only being present when the going gets tough. I actually cried at the mountain scene (hint: drought demon)... more>> but immediately laughed at how his life went from then on.

It's an okay choice for a light read. If you're not being picky and just want something entertaining enough to pass time then this is okay. <<less

One of the best laugh out loud Chinese webnovels I've read. FL was endearingly hilarious, while ML was adorable. My only gripe would probably be
Spoiler

that I wanted more fluffy moments between the leads. We didn't even get snu-snu.

Read it. The high ratings are well-deserved.

This story is really fun to read. The plot wasn't boring and quite engaging. MC was likeable; she's cheerful, funny, and brave. She also wasn't afraid to take initiative to pursue ML first. As for ML, he's less memorable than MC but what I like the most about him was he always tried to be there for MC and didn't hesitate to save her even at the cost of his life.

As the ending, it's quite satisfying. I especially love how Elder Wu also got his own happy ending. It's just... more>> that, I hope I could see more of MC and ML's life after their marriage.

Spoiler

They reincarnated together for several lifetimes but wasn't able to get together for some reasons (mainly, it's caused by ML's evil qi). So when they're finally together in this lifetime, I wish I could see more of their life after that. It's a pity though because the main story ended after they're married.

Note:

I was aware of the dissatisfaction of some reviewers because of "white skin is beautiful while black skin is ugly" belief in this novel. I didn't know whether the author tried to be racist or not. What I knew was, it's true that most Asians saw the white skin as the mark of beauty and this belief was already rooted and hard to change (just looked at those whitening skin care ads on TV). So I really couldn't blame the author for pointing this out in her/his novel because once again, it's fact that many Asians had this belief. Is their belief wrong? Maybe yes for the onlooker's POV but for them? Maybe not. <<less

Great novel!

Love both the money lover MC and the Silent but kind ML.

Very interesting on how MC is the only one who can be near and have contact with ML, where as with others they get sick when they are near him.

Believe it or not, this novel really caught me! 10/10, love everyone, very low on drama and high on fun. Totally recommended, I mtl-ed most of the chapters but it was still very easy to read.

The translation here though is absolutely excellent, kudos to the translators!

Some highlights of the novel to me were the female lead's personality, the romance, and the humor. A must read and I can see myself re-reading this in the future!

I truly enjoy most of this author’s works and was excited to pick this up! It’s such a light read and truly a gem. I’ve read a lot of novels where the characters perform spiritual things in the modern world - and they tackle this one brilliantly!

It's an okay story. I feel like, it's thought about well enough on how following scenes would unfold. There are some points that with rationality makes part of the story there just for plot, but the whole background of the story itself can be considered made up. Depending if you believe in ghosts or not.

The love was gradual, which was nice. I don't consider it a slow burn. I'm a bit bothered by the age difference of 12 years, but that's a personal preference.

How the plot unfolds was enough, in... more>> the sense that the story wasn't dragged on too long. The FL wasn't OP, and the ML would support her where possible. I like FL's that aren't damsels in distress. Additionally, the ML is thoughtful in the kind sense. <<less

It was a cute and fun read about a female exorcist who was finally found by her family after she was kidnapped and a sickly but loving man haunted by evil spirits. MC's personality is very lovable and I liked MC's and ML's relationship very much.

4.5 but rounded down.

A very nice supernatural romance that focuses on a badass MC and her quest to save the man she loves.

This is genuinely one of the funniest stories I've read on here. I'll admit that some of it is a little juvenile but it just works with the story. Of course, the story gets more serious (and mildly depressing) as it goes but there are still jokes tossed in regularly.

Spoiler

There is a female pe*verted ghost who was shy in life but decides she wants to take advantage of handsome men. These men end up sticky and slimy. Take from that what you will (I admit, I giggled like a thirteen year old).

When the MC encounters a bad Celestial Master who destroyed her talisman, she helps beat him up with a ghost. Her brother shows up and this leads to an awkward moment where she can't think of how to explain. The pe*verted ghost literally shouts "Say he mol*sted you!" and it's pretty hilarious. *Please note that I don't condone false accusations in real life but this is a story and that being the first thing the ghost thought of is what makes it funny.

There is another instance where a couple want to reincarnate together but the City God of the Underworld informed them that they watched too much dramas and that it didn't work like that. Eventually, he agreed to allow them to reincarnage together as animals. Specifically pandas. All because they had done good deeds in their life and the fact that he was getting creeped out by their lovey-dovey acts.

Another example is her Grandpa nonchalantly telling her parents that he used to send her out alone on New Years to exorcise evil spirits. Really, anything with the Grandpa is just hilarious (except that one part), even his pursuit of his love in the Underworld was funny.

[collapse]

The MC is a college-aged student who was stolen as a child. She was rescued by an exorcist after being abandoned at the foot of a mountain. From there, she grew up studying and learning how to be an exorcist like him. She's smart, kind and rather money-driven but she does have a set of morals. A bit naive, it takes the actions of a pe*verted female ghost to help her understand her feelings for the ML and she is the one who begins the pursuit.

Spoiler

She's got a special physique that prevents her from being harmed by evil energy but it also lets her absorb the energy. Which she uses to seal up the ML's evil spirit. And yes, it is by kissing at several points. It's also this kissing that makes her realize she likes the ML as the pervy ghost tells her that if she "kisses someone and can still picture kissing them again, that it's love".

[collapse]

The ML is a slightly older weapons genius who has an evil spirit trapped within him. His whole life has been him staying inside his courtyard with a rotating group of guards (as prolonged contact with him can drive people insane). Upon realizing that the MC is both unafraid of his evil spirit and capable of sealing it, he quickly begins to develop feelings for her. However, he does hold off on acting on his feelings because of his circumstances making it difficult for anyone to live with him. That and the age gap between them. All that goes right out the window when the MC begins to chase him.

The story begins with the MC returning to her family after being raised in a small village. There are some minor little road bumps for her getting started in her new life (like the typical mean girl going against her) but her adaption is relatively quick. It also switches straight into her ghost-busting and interactions with the ML so there isn't much about her school or home life in the story. We do get to know that her father and brother are workaholics while her mother is a bit on the emotional side.

Most of the rest of the story revolves around the MC's interactions with the ML. Even the parts that start without him will end up dragging him into it. This story really is all about the two of them and how they work together. His evil energy is beneficial to her and she's looking for a way to cure him. There isn't a 2nd ML in this story either so it's just them. That being said, their combined backstories are kind of depressing.

Spoiler

Turns out they have both been reincarnated repeatedly over thousands of years. They would find each other and try to solve the ML's problem but he would always die young (before 30 was mentioned at one point in the translation) and the process would then restart. Which is made even more depressing when we learn

The MC was destined to reincarnate into a wonderful life after their initial life but meeting him had changed her fate. The new fate was a short life and then her soul being scattered. Thinking he could prevent it, he broke up with her but that failed.

She was a princess and chose to become a corrupted being (Drought Demon) because her people were slaughtered. To save her, he sealed her power into himself which killed him and set him on the reincarnation loop.

[collapse]

I laughed quite a bit reading this but then things get a little heavy towards the end. We learn about the MC's Grandpa's first (and only) love, the bond between the MC and ML and then an emotional rollercoaster that provides a happy ending.

I enjoyed this but it's definitely not for everyone. <<less

Pure comedy. This is hilarious.

The FL is absolutely shameless, she is witty, petty, money lover, oblivious, cheerful, with just the right dose of naivety, and she is just so pure in her pursuit of the ML.

The bodyguard/assistants are the best wing men I've read in a long time, actually giving good advice and having good assists.

The brother is so comical, and the reactions are priceless.

I love the Grandpa he is awesome.

Love the whole story. 10/10 would recommend.

It’s a 3.5 it’s a cute novel with a silly but still smart FL and a devoted ML. Its quite cute and fluffy. The romance was a bit slow but warmed up quite fast. It’s not my favorite book from the author but it is dealing with a different genre.

It's not bad but not totally outstanding. What I mean is, it's enjoyable but not enough to keep you thrilled. However, if you're looking for a fast read and a funny one, then I guess this story will also do. Tbh, I actually thought that the FL will be OP, but she isn't. She's smart but not overly smart. She's pretty but not a stunning one. She's talented in metaphysics but can't be considered as a genius. In short, she's talented but lacked in many aspects which made her more... more>> realistic (at least compared to my usually liked OP FL's who can do everything plus is a stunning beauty). Honestly speaking, I don't really acknowledge the FL's talent in metaphysics that much. I mean, don't get me wrong, she's indeed talented but I just feel like that whenever she's in trouble, there'll be always someone to rescue her, either her master of the ML, which made her not that likable compared to the ML. I mean, in real life, ofc, if you're in danger and can't solve it alone, ask for help. But anyway, my mind is a mess and I have a high requirement for my FL, I know. And speaking of the ML, he's the real OP but not the domineering and cold type. He's a genius which created an imbalance between him and the FL.

Anyway, I don't know but although the characters are funny, none of them can be my favorite. However, I'll emphasize again, THE STORY ISN'T BAD. IT'S FUNNY AND ENJOYABLE but sometimes, you'll get bored too. I also feel like there's a spark between the ML and FL but rather than saying that they're the couple full of tension and passion, they more or less belong to the wholesome and fluffy type of couple. Anyway, it's 8/10 for me since the good translation quality is also a plus. <<less

Kinda wandering between liking this novel and feeling bored with it.

I’m new with the metaphysical stuff and ngl it is interesting. Somewhat. Tho I do feel like I just kept getting forcefully spoon-fed sometimes. I still like it tho. (sounds masochistic??)

But I find the writing kinda immature. Like, I think it’s very fast paced, events after events keep happening one after another, but considering the plot, of which until now (more than half length of the novel) I can’t get a clear view of. I’m guessing it’s about... more>> stripping off the evil off of ML but as I said until now there’s not a glimpse of it. So I guess it’s all gonna be cram packed in the last third part of the novel and I know I’m not gonna like the fast paced x2 kind of storytelling.

Same with romance by the way, till now I see no chemistry aside from MC being able to be near ML without getting harmed. As in not a single hint of chemistry.
Spoiler

Yes, even when they already kissed twice which is more like CPR. There’s no dokidoki.

[collapse]

Aside from those, the biggest variable for me is the characters. As with the fast pace of the story, there’s no time to really appreciate nor time for the author to really shape up any of the characters. It’s practically like getting labeled with a sticky note like ‘this character is like this’ and that’s it. Not even just for the side characters, the protagonists are also the same, you can see it in the first 10 chapters.

Speaking of the protagonists, ML is like a foil, maybe a light reflector, to make the MC shine more. He’s very flat. An unfortunate, self-sacrificial gentleman. You won’t see any other sides of him aside from that.

Spotlight on the MC, I like her unwavering self-confidence and kindness. But she’s very much like a 10 y/o. That’s it. She’s confident and kind and a 10y/o. If it wasn’t mentioned she’s in college I would’ve continued imagining her as a 10y/o. And everytime her being in college is not mentioned my image of her keeps going back to 10y/o.

So aside from the metaphysics that is fresh to me and the little bit of comedy. There’s nothing really interesting in it for me. <<less

Very interesting metaphysics plot with sweet love story tying it all together and a happy resolution of age old danger.

Vhen Yu the FL is adorably energetic and pure and her helping the ML Third Brother ‘stabilise’ his evil qi is hilariously blatant. No angst bt leads just an old inherent danger that they had to resolve. The side story of her Old Grandpa is also a hoot.

May be worth re- reading to understand plot line better

This might fall flat for many people because the main character's a hot-tempered, hit-then-ask/think, unapologetic type of person, not excessively so, but still to the point that it can bother you.

On top, the age gap between the main couple spans over a decade (M30, F18). Romance and school life are sub-plots.

So if you don't like these types of MCs and have problems with more prominent age gap couples, this might not be for you. A shame, considering that the ML, for a rare turn, is a caring, warm, tender, thoughtful... more>> type of ML.

The story excels in making the side characters and their own story shine, though, which in return, dims the main plot, turning it flat messy melodramatic clichés.

Without the comedy that was the glue holding everything up together, the moments shared between the CP were awfully boring. The supposed highlight towards the end (for about 30-40chapters) was a laborious track uphill.

The author dangling exposition in front of the reader's noses, giving some bread crumbs here and there was rather irritating than intriguing.

Mostly also because it spanned over too many chapters. Like walking half a step and pausing for 10 minutes and that on loop til the end.

The mini theater and side character's love life most certainly stole my attention away and I couldn't be bothered about how the main couple's life played out.

Spoiler

There was a scene where someone had pointed out how fed up they were with the whole, you live, I live; you die, I die/Romeo-Juliet kind of braindead romance.

Ironically the main couple's relationship is exactly that.

They went from hanging out casually at home (at times not even in the same room) to making out, playing the suspension bridge effect card here and there and boom, ML loves her so much he can't let go and has to marry her, they'd risk their lives for each other.

The narrow options for ML def. Don't help MC's case:

She's the only female who's not part of his family and can deal with his physique. Otherwise, there was no way for him to get to know other women or interact with other women of suitable age. ML believed for the longest time he'd be a short-lived single dog and he wasn't about to sacrifice someone for his solitude.

Conveniently, a lively, outgoing, and evil-spirit-aura-immune girl of age appears right before the lonely, sickly martyr.

Entangling their previous lifetimes into this whole situation when they barely had any proper romantic progress other than making out and spending a lot of time under a roof, it's a little bit of a fast shot, to say the least.

Nice for the supernatural plot, yes, awful for the romantic side. Not to mention the darn plot twist of the main plot is based off of a late 90s blockbuster. Kinda lazy.
