Buddha-like Rebirth

Only after dying did Fu Zhiyu realise that the world he lived in turned out to be a novel.

No wonder he devoted all his life to loving Xie Ke but Xie Ke didn’t even like him. After all, the protagonist’s journey was to the sea of stars, while he was an indigenous cannon fodder who bit the dust halfway, just blindly delaying the protagonist’s career path.

Fu Zhiyu, who woke up: What is love? What is power? The world in the novel is all fake, I don’t know what they are fighting for there (disillusioned_and_opting_out_of_the_rat_race.jpg)

He deeply reflected and regretted his previous life that was really baffling. After being reborn, he immediately decided to let go and become Buddha-like calm, not bothering with anything and living his life as a happy cannon fodder, the farther away from Xie Ke and the main plot, the better. But he didn’t expect that he was not the only one who had changed in this life.

…It seems the protagonist became strange too.

Fu Zhiyu: General Xie, please follow the script. Now let go of me, I’m tired and want to go back and lie down.

Xie Ke [gentle smile]: I will accompany you.

Fu Zhiyu: …?

well I couldn't put it down and read it in 2 days.

I enjoyed it. I was sad for the MC and ultimately an explanation for why it happened that way in the first life is given. But the MC doesn't just forgive, even with a reason it doesn't erase the hurt he experienced.

Happy ending and eventual resolution between MC and ML. But like it's like if you meet decades later and you want to try again and aren't even sure if you can kind of eventual.

Ohhh God, a really nice and beautifully written novel.

When I first read it yesterday, I had a vague feeling of having already read it to certain extent, I didn't know when may be last year or a year before that, but idk the reason why I dropped it at that time so I read it again and thank god I did it.

The author did really a very great work in the story. It's very nice and warm.

The title "Buddha like rebirth" Really suits it too much, as the... more>> MC after rebirth is basically a budha.

It's a very calming and peaceful, mesmerizing story, which would left u soo engrossed in it.

I liked the story a lot, my heart ached for ML but I suppose it was the best for them.

MC after rebirth let go of almost his all feelings he had, his ambition, his love, his friendship everything and just wanted to live peacefully with few of his close relatives.

When I read about ML regretting, suffering, trying so hard to mend their relationship despite MC being cold and indifferent, my heart ached a lot for ML way tooo much, but I think it was best for them.

I enjoyed reading it a lot, I loved it's storyline and it's plot. It was just a bit long for me, and in between a few chapters felt plain to me but I guess they were it's essence.

The extras and last few chapters were just sooo good, cause I was really looking forward for MC and ML being together. So loved it.

I highly recommend it to you all, and I can assure u all that u will like it.

Thanku author for ur effort and the translators it was awesome translations done by u. <<less

Ratings - 4.5 / 5.0

First of all, I really want to thank the translator for their monumental efforts in finishing this work in such a short duration. It was very good to read and hardly any mistakes could be found.

The plot line went awesome, though there really wasn't much romance. The aspect that I really like a lot was the author hadn't gone into depth about the sufferings of MC in the first world setup, yet managed to arouse hatred for ML from the get-go. At first, I pitied and... more>> empathized MC but later on pitied and worried more about ML.

Due to misunderstandings solely, the pure love between the leads had taken a worst turn. I started rooting for ML after knowing about his side of the story. I could understand that ML was really at fault and MC's heart had changed. It would be what would have actually happened in reality too. Still there is a tiny part in me that I couldn't help frowning at the way MC treated him indifferently, even though ML's redemption was too deep.
Spoiler

Xie Kie had unintentionally hurt Zhiyu badly, infact causing his death. Finally Zhiyu had believed he was truly not loved by Xie Kie because of this scene. Rather when Zhiyu had done the same, Xie Kie had hardly stopped loving him even if his lover wanted him to die.

[collapse]
The author depicted the flaws in the character of both MC and ML beautifully.

ML's love was really naïve. He didn't know he was doing it wrongly at the beginning. His possessiveness and obsession made him feel that there was nothing wrong in his behavior. However, when he realized Zhiyu hated him further for those traits, he tried to change them.

My only regret is to not be able to visualize the romance blooming between them. Sure, the author had mentioned, but rather in a couple of paras, not as a story or rather deeply. So I deduct 0.5 from the overall rating. It should be slow romance, but I felt only heartache for ML more than MC in this story. Nevertheless, kudos for the author - 苏怀荒 and the translator - YunYun for their great works. <<less

✓ past regret

✓ MC is smart

✓ ML (questionable) yandere

... more>> ✓ wife chasing crematorium (ish)

✓ historical

✓ a mild palace intrigue

✓ angst (a lil bit)

✓tragedy (sort of)

✓ a very sudden QT out of nowhere lol

It hooked me good enough to binge finished the story, and I thank you for the translator for the fast translation publish.

It will be even better if there are more tragedy, and angst on it.

Hopefully the dear translator can find a novel that ML is so s*um like Shen Qun from Sissy but doting his wife fiercely afterward like Jing Shao from wife is first 😂😂 <<less

A wonderful story. While it was a romance story, to me it was more so a story about FZY’s (the MC) and later XK’s (the ML) individual healing processes, as well as the healing of their relationship.

Personally, I also liked the progression of the novel. There were multiple time skips but I don’t feel as though they skipped over anything vital to the plot or that I would’ve been interested in because I wasn’t looking for a very world-building, political story when I started reading this.

I felt their relationship had... more>> a very natural progression (especially considering the various time skips) and developed from being toxic af to something calm and lovely that I could honestly see them both being happy with for a very long time. This progress also reflects their own growth:
Spoiler

FZY’s growth from being super self-sacrificial and over-accommodating to the point of being taken advantage of; to being apathetic to the world (and likely depressed) and holding negative feelings (fear, anger, etc.) to XK; to finding purpose in life, and no longer being effected by XK/acceptance of his actions; to positive emotions towards XK (gratitude) ; and finally a healthy love with XK. XK’s growth from being the typical toxic Chinese ML that’s obsessed with the MC, wants to lock them up, and forces themselves on to the MC; to realizing just how selfish his “love” was and giving the MC autonomy and respect while still trying to help them behind the scenes; to losing his memory and having a purer relationship that is free of expectations (I actually loved this memory-loss thing because it showed that XK treated FZY so well even without reason— like he didn’t remember his past and feel like this is the only way to get FZY to love him, etc. XK just genuinely felt that FZY being by his side and happy was enough. He didn’t need FZY to like/love him or any physical relationship. XK was happy to love FZY without any expectation of a return in feeling, which I felt really hammered in his character growth.) ; to regaining his memory, dealing with his guilt and insecurities

It's one of those "wife-chasing crematoriums" where essentially in a previous life the ML is complete s*um to the MC and the MC runs away only for the ML to realize his errors and does everything to get the MC back.

I typically get a bit annoyed at the genre because usually the original mistake or issues are not handled very well (I would normally get frustrated and want the MC to just cut their losses and move on 100%) but this is one of the better ones in the genre.

The... more>> author truly takes their time for the ML to grovel and also for the MC to really come to himself and find a life and purpose beyond the ML/outside of the original love. Which is very rewarding to read.

In the end

Spoiler

it takes multiple lifetimes for the ML to get forgiveness from the MC which kind of makes sense especially if the MC was someone that disappointed in the ML

Overall story was really engaging, there was plot and progression outside of the romance, and the translation was fantastic. <<less

A bittersweet story with a nicely written ending. With these type of bittersweet stories, its really easy to go off and mess up where theyre trying to go with the story, but this story had a really good flow and not plot holes. And the growth of the characters makes sense. The characters logic makes sense. The way the got together made sense.

Out of all of the wife chasing crematorium novels I've read, this one would have to be the most realistic. After being slighted by the ML and having his entire understanding of reality be destroyed, the MC's is realistic. He becomes dispirited and indifferent to his life once the world is rebooted, truly just wanting to laze around and do nothing. Still, he keeps his distance from the ML and those who hurt him, but can't find it in himself to be angry anymore.

I would say most of the novel follows the MC's eventual healing and being able to accept the truth of his reality. He finds new motivations in fixing the society of land in his possession. And while at times this did cause the story to drag, I though it was very much in character. Especially how, even when the ML disappears, he isn't liked "I'm still in love" -- he's calm and, though shocked, more interested in getting answers as to why the ML sacrificed everything for him.

The ML is also an oddity among WCC novels. At the start, he's obsessed with the MC and refuses to leave him alone, assaulting him and stalking him. But, once the two characters finally reveal their secrets, he realizes that his love is too oppressive and would prefer to suffer by himself than make the MC unhappy. He even goes as far as to erase his existence to save the MC's, displaying what I'd call true love. "If you love them, let them go." He certainly would do anything for the MC.

It was so nice to see their love life after the events of the original novel. I liked how the author didn't turn the MC into a love struck idiot and kept his character strong through the entirety. The ML in the modern world was also a fun take, especially as it demonstrated how his love crosses even reality itself. But, I'm glad he was given a complete romance at the end.

The reason I rated this four and not fave stars was because a major part of the novel centers on the MC and politics in his kingdom with no ML present. I felt like the story kind of deviated at that point and it went on and on. It was a bit boring but I also understand why it existed. It allowed the MC to make up for his previous life's failures. I just disliked it, personally.

Still, this is a very good BL novel thats different, in a good way. The author accurately portrays character development and reactions to trauma.

Wife chasing angst. My only complaint is that they sure didn't make the ML likable at ALL in the beginning. I only rooted for him cause I knew he was the ML. Be warn the MC is very steadfast about rejecting the ML all the way up until chapter 90 ish (is this spoiler? Idk). Like FIRM rejection. I'm talking MC doesn't want to see ML ever again.

First off, I prefer romance focused novel to fill the void in my life. So, I was not having a blast. There's extended... more>> amount of periods where the ML just doesn't show up at all. I'm talking about sometimes it was 25 chapters straight where he isn't mentioned. Personally, that's not my cup of tea. I wanna see interaction, angst, and romance between the main characters. This is just a small personal want. Read if you like to see a different side of trauma in danmei that actually affected the MC in a profound way. The side characters are also very well written and the MC is very clear headed and smart

Don't read if you want fluff breaks in the middle of your angst cause that's not gonna happen. It's all in the last 10 chapters ish. It's straight angst with political struggles in between until then. <<less

This is a story that does a really thorough exploration of what it's like psychologically to basically go through a toxic, nasty, f*cking nuclear break up, and the way it's explored is using this rebirth, system plot device as a metaphor for that. The lead up, the aftermath. Feels clever. Also a bit of a deconstruction of the yandere archetype. I do kinda wish it had stuck to its guns with the concept at the end, but I could easily hear out an argument that says the ending makes perfect... more>> sense so 💁🏾‍♀️ I think it just wasn't for me exactly, got tired by the end, but if this is in many people's top 3 lists I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Really really really sensitively written. Fun read. <<less

If this is a physical novel, it is a total page-turner. So many twists and turns that you can't help but want to continue until the end.

It is a bit slow on the romance side but it is understandable considering what the MC went through. I kept thinking as I read how the MC and ML will get together and I was no disappointed.

Very good setup and first half but suddenly! decades have passed, the writing turns into more or less a recounting of events and the main couple both die without the MC redeveloping much feeling for the ML. There's a very quick modern arc that has no relation in tone or emotional development to the first life, they die AGAIN and then they're reunited and in love and living happily ever after as the head of the system worlds...I'm sure MTL was to blame for some of my confusion with the later plot but I still think that the author is better at setting things up than she is at finishing them

I just had to write a review because I feel like ML was dealt so much injustice. Personally, I disagree that this book is one of the best.

Am I saying that MC deserved what was coming?? Nope. You have already heard it from other reviewers, I'm not going to go on a rant about it. The whole point of this review is the ML.

The fact that you don't see the 2 in love until the last 10 chapters (not even 10, the love story starts at 95-96) is bonkers to... more>> me. MC spent 90+ chapters torturing ML and treating him cruel emotionally, ruining him to become an insecure man who doubts his self worth and devotes his entire being to MC. Did MC get empowered? Yes, but what about ML? Idk about y'all, but idt any of these counts as a love story if it's just onesided love the entire love. MC said his love disappeared, it shouldnt come back after 90 chapters and a whole life of saying that. How the hell are you 2 still in love when y'all ruined eachother until like that??

I agree with ScarlettOhar and all her points. It's hard to take this novel as a great love story when the cruelness of the MC was stretched out. Adding onto the fact that ML had no choice, and still had to go through everything, and even went so far to reboot the world and sacrifice himself. Was MC treated badly in his first life? Yes, but did ML have a choice? No. I feel that it's s*upid to blame everything on ML. I don't think everything that happened warrants a ruthless and cruel MC who treats ML like utter shit. If it was shorter I could still accept it, but MC was told this entire that ML loves him, didn't feel anything, and only when ML disappears, he feels something?? Idk man, this feels absurd to me.

People question why this novel only has 4.2, and it's exactly because of this reason. 3 stars for the angst, 2 stars down cause it ain't worth it. The ending was anticlimactic as f*ck. <<less

the story is good. well written. the characterisation is also pretty good.

my only probable critic is the ending. it felt too rushed. as if the author remembered at the remaining 5% of the book that this was supposed to be a happy ending danmei i.e romance between the MC and ml.

the ml, xie ke spends the whole novel atoning for his sins and it results in barely any reaction from the MC, fu zhiyu until the last 3-7 chapters.

a significant theme of the novel is fu zhiyu's apathy especially towards... more>> xie ke. he literally does not give a f*ck. the author makes it aware throughout the novel. even when he harms xie ke, he doesn't bother with remorse or worry because he's indifferent towards him. cannot even afford the energy to show detest. and with that being an inherent aspect of his identity, you'd think he'd absorb himself in a buddha-like sentiment in regards to his romantic life. but the author remembers wait... im supposed to give the MC and ML a happy ending so they rush to figure out the logistics of the narrative that would make them end up together. their ending is as sweet as the author could make it be in 3-5 chapters. they get together and have lots of s*x and they love each other. but maybe I would have loved to see more yearning, the way fu zhiyu slowly falls in love with xie ke again. dedicate a good portion of the novel to see a well fleshed out romantic dynamic between the two. cause we are shown throughout the novel how xie ke loves fu zhiyu but we are only told that fu zhiyu loved xie ke (and briefly alluded to how he supposedly shown it in the novel's preface). we literally get xie ke on his knees in the mud begging for a crumbs of attention, and for fu zhiyu we can an epilogue of him going "mmmmh, maybe I do kinda like him"

Spoiler

also! the way he falls for xie ke can also be interpreted as him "paying back" 'cause he mentioned that he does not like owing people. so who can say that him deciding to "give in" and let himself fall for xie ke again wasnt to pay xie ke for the suffering he endured on his behalf.

[collapse]

if you're here for the romance shenanigans you will be disappointed. at a certain point the novel reads more like "fu zhiyu's attempt at atoning for his failures in his past life while also not give a f*ck" and it's summarised like a quasi historical text. the point you even forget there was supposed to be a romantic relationship lol. I feel like the author should have stuck with the buddha-like sentiment throughout the novel. additionally I didn't really get or enjoy the whole lord god and system-like plot. at a certain point it felt unnecessarily convoluted and as a way for the author is solve plot holes without requiring realism. <<less

Crematorium novels are fun when the s*um gong deliberately hurts the shou. It's only when he is truly scummy that the atonement process is fun and the redemption arc feels well-earned. But when the ML unknowingly does scummy things, it's a misunderstanding. And when a misunderstanding is stretched for 60 chapters, it makes the characters look wooden, s*upid and mind-numbingly obtuse.

Another thing that bothered me is that the author tells us through a one-chapter synopsis and some flashbacks about what happened in the previous life. The key point here is... more>> the author 'Tells' us and doesn't 'Show' us. The ML hurt the MC and so the MC turned indifferent. Must we believe this? A good story is presented, not told. A good writer creates a world, fleshes out characters, crafts dialogues and adds conflict. The reader then draws inferences and takes sides and forms opinions. That's when a reader is involved. That is when a reader is invested. When a writer simply tells you such and such thing occurred, it's not easy to get involved. It feels like a forced narrative.

I felt forced to sympathise with the MC. I felt like I couldn't completely hate the ML until I learned his side of the story. And that reveal happens 60 chapters into the book. It's aggravating to be forced to take sides without full information.

Now, some may argue that the ML
Spoiler

poisoned, deposed and killed the MC and that is enough information. True. But, the ML is pitifully repentant and desperate to explain himself. He has also clearly rebooted the whole world for another chance with the MC. As a reader, this makes me sit back and think, 'Hey, there is something missing'. The MC dismisses all this as 'guilt' and asserts that the ML and some other characters are atoning for their own peace of mind.

[collapse]

It is ridiculously stretched out and the MC's indifference
Spoiler

doesn't justify the hurt he puts ML through. And I say this purely because I do not know what the ML puts him through. It's not detailed.

[collapse]

I can sympathise with an indifferent MC but not a cruel one.

For instance, in thousand autumns
Spoiler

Shen Qiao treats Yan Wushi with polite indifference. Not with cruelty. Not with vengefulness. But pure indifference. And when I say this, I talk about the emotional aspect of their relationship. He cares about him as a human being because Shen Qiao is a good person and would care about anyone who needs care.

[collapse]

This novel is ironically named 'Buddish like Rebirth' and so I expected the MC to display the tenets of Buddism through his actions.
Spoiler

But no, he feels obtuse and cruel and goes as far as to do to the ML what the ML did to him. Except, The ML doesn't do it intentionally or does it without knowing the extent of his actions. But the MC does it to make him feel pain. Is this indifference? No. This is vengefulness under the guise of indifference.

[collapse]

The ending was ridiculous
Spoiler

and they shouldn’t have ended up together. They’ve both hurt each other beyond repair and I don’t think transmigrating into a modern world solves the past hurt. At least, the ML atoned. What about the MC?

I wanted to love this. And I did at first. I rarely enjoy wife chasing crematoriums because I'm usually left unhappy with the ML's redemption and the MC's too easy to get forgiveness.

This looked to be the perfect one, with an MC who stood by what they said. Who stayed indifferent to the ML, the complete opposite of love. I could appreciate how ML got a dose of MC's suffering. The translators also did hell of an amazing job.

But. It got to a point where I didn't like MC anymore.... more>> Where their post rebirth fog was everywhere. Like he was numb.

I understand why. I empathize. The amount of time MC spent without proper healing after he first died and the amount of trauma he went through contributes a lot to how he is in his second life. But that didn't mean I could enjoy reading about it.

It got to a point where I wanted them to get together already until I stopped to think, why tho? We're never really made aware why MC should love the ML. ML fell in love with the MC who loved him. But all we know is that MC's reason for loving ML was love at first sight and that he was saved. That's it.

All in all. I just got tired. I'm sure if I was a little more patient maybe I would have gotten to the satisfying ending. But really why waste time on something I'm already starting to slowly get indifferent to when I still have a huge list of TBR and life is honestly too short.

DNF but I won't rate it because it wouldn't be fair. <<less

Not a fan of it (translation's absolutely wonderful, but the story not so much - I'd give it 2 stars just for the translations but the story is really too much for me)

Came here for the story since it was my first time reading a 'wife chasing crematorium'. But... I really am sick and tired of watching these two.

Spoiler

I didn't comment on the ML much since I haven't reached too far into the story but I can tell it's not something that will improve later down the line so I promptly dropped it.

Am I the right person to speak on this? Probably not since I haven't read the whole thing, but believe me when I say I truly am frustrated to the point that I have put out such a bad review. You can argue that it makes sense because of this and that, but I'd beg to differ.

This next paragraph is my entire thought process as I read through the story. For some reason, I just couldn't get it out of my mind -

Everything is just a set of data, it doesn't matter anymore? Then why do you care about this rebirth, your mother, the royal family, ML, any of it? So you feel nothing for ML, huh. Okay, well, you have seen all those actors in their worlds and have any of them ever "rebooted" the world? Of course not, that's why even "Lord God" was shocked! Why are you not wondering why he did it? Ah right, my apologies, you simply do not care about him anymore, is that right? Well, doesn't that conveniently excuse you from never letting him explain himself and any of his previous actions (you know, like a reasonable adult with an in-depth understanding of the 'system' would) ? This type of selective indifference makes his character inconsistent and just overall nonsensical.

The overwhelming sense of dread I get throughout the entire novel is more of a "Why am I even reading this? Is there something about these characters that I like?", rather than "What the hell?! This ML is a jerk, let's see how he redeems himself!". The reason for this is mainly because of the MC. He is, in every sense of the word, lacking. Unpopular opinion but I genuinely would prefer reading in ML's perspective more because it at least wouldn't be as dreary as MC's.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The biggest problem I have with this novel is its rather paradoxical concept.

For a moment, try to imagine a setting without ML in the rebirth entirely. Now, what exactly do we have here? Putting it succinctly, we get a protagonist with a lame motive with no strong plot/setting to back it up, bland characters, and chapters that are disappointingly less entertaining than fillers in slice of life anime. Sure, it may not be fair to say that when it's literally a slow-burn BL novel. But, this story is written in a way that it makes it seem as though it wants MC to be strong and independent of ML.

Yet, what's leftover in the end is a pile of lukewarm... stuff (?) once the ML is gone. Their 'love' already dissipated, there is no chemistry between their interactions, and there is very little satisfaction for the reader to get even when it is rebuilt.

To be honest, the way MC fell in love to this extent with ML in their first life didn't even make much sense to me. It felt more like the author wanting us to feel bad for poor MC who fell in love in first sight only to be betrayed. I understand what message the author is trying to convey, but it just (imo) lacks wayyy too much substance to work. However, I heard this is actually a common trope amongst this particular genre so maybe I'm judging this novel a bit unfairly. Nevertheless, it is very, very weird how it all started.

[collapse]

You may find my review seeming kinda harsh, but I'd recommend reading it yourself to really see what I mean. Also happy to see any differences in opinions, but either way, there's nothing I personally have left to gain from this story.

Apparently, they will do even more world-hopping and they have not even made up in the first world... amazing.

I wanted to read this but the ending really doesn't suit my taste. I don't want the MC to be with the ML again. : ( The MC should be a brilliant character, I can already see from reading a few chapters but the ML is really not ideal.

Spoiler

and the ML is outrageous enough to steal a kiss when MC was unconscious and still unclear of his situation. Big red flag. Anyway if he's powerful enough to reboot a world, he should have some means to convey his meaning to MC in the previous life without hurting him so much.

I just really hate the ML from the get go. I simply don't care what reason he has to do what he's done to MC. Anyway he's a scum. And that's that.

Spoiler

Yet another MC who lost his basic common sense the moment he got lovestruck due to ML. And suffers and endures everything passively and gets tired of life.

So the already laid back MC gives up everything after knowing about reality if his world being a book. And becomes an indifferent unbothered Buddha, deciding to stay away from ML and plot which of course won't happen eVER.

If you are new to this trope, then you might like it. Like it seems okay as far now. But I am so sick after reading n number of novels of this trope already, both in Bg and BL.

Spoiler

I don't get it. Every single f*cking time, they have the MC become s*upid and reckless after falling for someone or ML and he dies pitifully. And then in next life, he finally grows up a bit. Phew! At least gets some basic common sense. And then becomes even more laid back than what he was in previous life. And then acts magnanimous and let goes everything and everyone for logic that's beyond my understanding. Without any interest or pursuing the evildoers in his life. Just takes some teeny tiny childish revenge on them and then that's it

Gets pushed around by obsessed or already blackened ML despite being indifferent for some reason and as per the requirement, sooner or later gives in and falls in love again..... well I can't go on reading this.
