Rating: 4/5- Really captivating story with lovely characters.

I enjoyed the jianghu adventures the MC experienced more than the love story. It’s not as well placed as some other novels in the genre so read it more for the plot. There’s not a lot of romance so it won’t really take away from the reading experience.

Very well written overall with interesting characters and a nice solid plot. I genuinely enjoyed reading this and found it unique. MC is a solidly likeable character and really owns his decisions and views. The ML... more>> is sort of like a side character really, it’s mostly about our MC and I really enjoyed that. He was well written enough to start and carry this story to its end.

Definitely recommend! <<less

This one was a beautiful story with beautiful characters and relationships.

I love how they portrayed the characters and their feelings and relationships in an almost subtle way most of the times.

It was also really enjoyable how on the journey all arcs kind of tied together with the main story.

Spoiler

The way the author first of shows similar plots where the misery of the characters was displayed, and then shows how lin rufei and gu xuandu experienced the same pain on a even more serious level, rlly portrays the struggle in an indirect way.

For example, Fu yu giving his life for his village is comparable to the heavenly ruler sacrificing his flesh for the people. There is also an arc of loving a sword spirit as a partner, what gu xuandu had to do to keep his lover.

I rlly love the indirect telling of how gx would forever wait for lrf like in the jiao arc. The longing and yearning are being hinted at and that just makes my heart cry out quietly.

[collapse]

However in my opinion this story couldve been longer and a lot of the ending could ve flowed better. The story at some point like someone just describing it to you as a third person.

Spoiler

The way that lrf and gx build his body with a lot of difficulty couldve been at least made into one big arc. I kinda missed where lrf suffers because gx is gone.

I also didn’t understand why lrf wasnt super powerful after getting his old body or why gx got his body back but the heavenly ruler didn’t.

How wu ao played the villain also was very short and somehow it felt like his end wasn’t tied together well enough.

Another thing I couldn’t look past is that lrf is essentially a groomer and fell in love with his adopted son??? I could look past it a bit because he fell in love again as an adult.

Some things felt missing like the cat or how the monk knew them. But that are just tiny details that aren’t that important.

[collapse]

I rlly love the character of the ml. Just all the things he pays attention to is so heartwarming.

All in all a very beautiful story that kinda reminds me of tgcf in almost every way just less sad. Some tiny details were a bit lacking in the storytelling but it was still very enjoyable to read. <<less

At the moment where I finished this novel, I really don't want this to end.. I want more. More of their love, more of their warmth and more of their story. I don't want to bid farewell at all. But as our beautiful cherry blossom Gu Xuandu says " there's no banquet in this world that doesn't come to an end..", so this is the end..

What a great story I got to read.. The plot was so amazing and I was literally living with them, experiencing their adventures, the challenges... more>> they come across, the longing, the love.. This story had one of the purest love story. The Mountains, rivers, beautiful sceneries were described so nicely that I felt like I was accompanying them in their travels and experiencing them myself. The characters were nicely written by the author. I have to say sometimes my eyes got wet beacuse it was too sad but sometimes because of the warmth I felt. The author had done a great job writing this amazing novel.

A big thank you for the translator. They have worked really hard explaining some unique terms so that we readers can understand and get the simple meaning. Thank you so much for bringing this story for us!

Highly recommend! <<less

I don't really write reviews but this story is so beautiful & sad at the same time.

My only complaint is that there were some loose ends. I know not everyone gets their happy ending but I wished they had. They deserved it.

Still rating this five stars because I did enjoy reading about the adventures of Lin Rufei (MC) with his two little maids and Gu Xuandu (ML). I think this novel had the potential to go upwards to 150+ chapters and not be boring because the author has written this piece very beautifully, but it was still disappointing that the novel didn’t completely tie the ends together. The ending felt rather abrupt, but the author still made it work.

Spoiler

There’s not so much written about our MC becoming an overpowered character like how his former being used to be. It’s up to you to appreciate or be disappointed with that, but personally I do appreciate that although Lin Rufei is the reincarnation of the Heavenly Teacher (I forgot what the title is, exactly), when it got to the point where this was revealed the author still maintained Lin Rufei’s identity.

Overall, it’s a good read. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a historical novel with martial arts, adventure, comedic undertone, a dynamic MC, and, of course, a green flag ML. <<less

I really enjoyed this, but I feel like it needed another full book to explain what happened in the time skip. Also, it's really sad not knowing what happens to the jiao in the end because I really wanted to see a follow up, actually for all of the side characters.

I enjoyed this novel a lot. MC, Lin Rufei, is kind, sickly but also powerful. Sometimes he is smart and sometimes he is naive. I liked MC more than ML, Gu Xuandu, for most of the novel. ML has a black bellied streak and loves to tease MC. It annoyed me when he doesn't answer MC's questions directly but it's revealed later that he has good reasons not to do so. So I ended up liking them the same. 😁 The mystery solving part of the novel is fun. Although some of the cases are sad, it is still interesting. I would 100% recommend this story if you have the time. It doesn't seem like a long novel but the chapters are long.

I won't give the spoiler for each of the cases. This is the spoiler regarding their relationship, which was revealed at the end.

Spoiler

MC and ML knew each other over a thousand years ago. At that time, ML was MC's eldest disciple. MC had saved ML when ML was a child. Later, ML grew up and fell in love with MC. ML did not confess to MC but showed his love in thoughtful ways. MC ended up falling for ML and confessing to ML first.

However, MC was the Heavenly Ruler. He was the real Heavenly Ruler. He saw the common people suffering due to the invasion of demons. So he created a formation to protect the continent. The problem was that the formation needed a special formation eye. MC's body became the formation eye and he told ML to pretend to be the Heavenly Ruler after MC was gone.

MC's soul should've gradually dispersed after his body became the formation eye but ML was able to protect it by placing MC's soul into a sword to nourish it. MC's soul became like a toddler and had no memory but ML was happy that at least MC's soul was still by his side. Hundreds of years later, ML's cultivation level reached level 10 and he could ascend. He wasn't interested at first but later he heard a rumor that the Heavenly Realm had a method to allow a sword spirit to have a physical body.

But there was a problem during ML's tribulation. The lightning strikes were more ruthless than expected. ML wanted to let the sword containing MC's soul fall to safety but the sword unsheathed itself and took the lightning hit for ML instead. The sword shattered and ML could've ascended but ML chose to preserve MC's soul at the expense of his body. MC's soul entered the reincarnation cycle and ML's soul parasitized a cherry blossom tree on Kunlun Mountain. ML waited for years and years for MC to be reincarnated. Until MC was born as the young master of the Kunlun Sect.

In the end, they were able overcome a lot of obstacles to finally be together. ☺️

[collapse]

Of note: The novel does leave me with some unanswered questions but I'm not too bothered by it.

" MC however, knew the name of that madman. His name was SC1 and he was once a very good chess player. Only later, when he lost the most important bone in his life, did he go crazy''. This f*cking side agst story just to brewed MC opinion on malexmale romance. For the mystery part.. If u're an old novel reader u actually can really guessed 40% of it after ch 25 or so bcs they always mention it, agree with someone who say that author and ML like to be ''mysterious'' is a bit annoying look at this ''ML could have said it directly, but he chose not to.'' Thing.. Or this “It’s not that I don’t trust you, it’s just that I don’t even know myself so how can I explain it for you to understand?”-hmm ML, your excuse is so lame, isn't it, plus we have more than one support character that also being mysterious, author and them are refuse to open the box although they already give the box in front of us this author I have to say that they really have such a dark jokes on their bone that make me feel guilty to laughing at some arch, but what pissed me off actually not just the way of mystery unveil but our MC is kind of dumb in critical way, want to say that this novel is beautiful but I keep remember the dumb mystery thing, really want to cry and laugh at the same time

If I could only use one word to describe this book, it'd be "beautiful".

I haven't read that far, but I'm hooked. The novel reminds me on TGCF in an alternate universe (not in a bad copying way). It's calm and enjoyable to read, without the intense plot twists and turns like many other books.. Atleast not yet.

I love the interactions between MC and ML. Seriously, I'm constantly looking forward to them talking and when they do.. The chemistry!!

There hasn't been a boring chapter. I seriously recommend you to read it... more>> rn!! <<less

This novel is absolutely amazing, Throughout reading this, it always interested me and never made me bored. I agree with the person who comment on how reading the novel felt like a dream cause it actually does. The different stories/arcs happening in the novel kept me intrigued and I never got tired of it. The twists and turns of the plot and arcs were good. Its just that I find it regretful for the novel to only be 92 chapters, I feel like with more chapters, it will definitely be... more>> the best and have more depth of the plotline and arcs in the novel. The arcs were very well balance. Some arcs were pretty big and let MC have a huge discovery of things and very complicated. While the others were easy going with a little but of a twist but not too horrific. The final rising point wasn't that much was a huge turning event like I hoped for but that's okay since it equally balance the arcs and not made the other arcs become not important at all.
Spoiler

i also hoped that the author would've give more details about MC past life when he was the Heavenly Ruler.

[collapse]
it was pretty slow and calm and didn't show much romance but more teasing of love lol. I still wished that the author would've wrote more of their romance before the rising point but its just my opinion. Though the storyline and plot was good there are still some plot holes that leaves me with some questions. Im guessing the plot holes does not involve with MC and ML story and is other side characters stories and so MC and ML wouldn't want to know other's business and stories but I do lol. But beside that I love this novel. It's one of kind and definitely a recommendation for others to read :) <<less

This was such an interesting story - with many mystery arcs and an overlying mystery (that is a bit obvious but still sweet). The novel is also written where the ending extra gives a different perspective on the beginning, which is such a beautiful idea.

I love the various side characters and side relationships in this story. Also, the author notes were so cute - the small theatre is full of funny little cartoon-like imaginings.

The characters are vivid and relatively sympathetic. I guess if there's a theme in this story, it's... more>> love and how hard it is to grasp sometimes. And how it thrive there there's respect for each other's decisions. How everything has a cost, great good means sacrifice by someone. <<less

So I've read a review about how this novel is " meh" and, "passable", "forgettable" even. I kind of agree. I like the stories of the characters MC meets, don't get me wrong; I just feel like something is missing. And I didn't finish this, ended in the 90's or stuff; coz I got bored. Like I knew there were more adventures, but really nothing to look forward to.

And OMG the romance is so... Dead? Idk. The author could just change it to being a bromance and you wouldn't see... more>> a difference. No chemistry at all, so much so that eventually the author's "little theater"s just becomes annoying. Like bro, please just stop pushing it! They're acquianted friends at best, anything beyond that is just gonna be annoying. I'm embarrassed just reading about it... Geez. Imagine if you had to become a couple with anyone that was nice to you during some boring ass adventure.

Characters? Meh.

Writing? Blah blah blah blah blah

Translation? 👍🏾 <<less

The Lin Family is the best I love them so much also I love how the author have a good sense of family. Majority of the books I read family members are always fighting, So I appreciate the freshness with this book.

but, idk why the last ark in this book leave a sour taste in my mouth maybe it’s the treatment one of character gets from the MC and ML I feel like it was unjust

This story was so beautiful and heartwarming! ❤⃛ヾ (๑❛ ▿ ◠๑) The plot is intricately woven with a story within a story, lovable main and side characters and a sweet romance– it was beautiful, heartbreaking, and hilarious all at the same time. I'm honestly sad to see it come to an end.

The story is quite predictable but because of the side characters story, it makes you wanna read more and know what will happen in the end. Different arcs will give you different feels and I feel that there's no... more>> actual villain in this story, only circumstances that pushed them to be in that situation.

What I love most about the story is how the Lin siblings loved each other dearly. They are very doting to their youngest brother and tried their very best to protect him at all costs. And there's no political or power struggles between them.

Also the translation is very good and the side/foot notes. Lol

Overall, highly recommended!!! ٩ (๑❛ᴗ❛๑) ۶ <<less

Cultivation setting

The premise is the fourth child of the Lin Family, Lin Rufei is a sick young master who would get sick juat because the wind is a bit too cold. One day, seemingly a spirit emerged from the cherry blossom he planted and asked him to revive his body and Lin Rufei agreed. He sets out, along with the invitations of Kunlun Sword Competition. Along the way, he encountered mysteries, old friends and new ones, foes and forgotten memories.

I absolutely love the mystery unraveling. Not even just the main... more>> plot but also the one of each arc. And from what I observed, all of it have something to do with love, platonic, filial, and romantic too. The characters are also very grounded and feels fresh in a way that I haven't seen in a long time in fiction. The novel's somber, melancholic tone enterwining with soft happiness is just *chef kiss*

If there's one thing Im not satiesfied is that I kinda wanna Chi Yu and the second She to get together itll be hilarious af <<less

Reading some of the reviews before and after I read the story, I would like to address the criticism that the ending is rushed. I can see where this is coming from, but I can also see why the ending the author's choice makes sense. After a slow-paced plot, it would have been untenable to delay the ending further than its current status. The author dedicated herself to a kind of closed-episodes mini-series plot structure, so there wasn't much to explain in the end apart from a few clarifications about... more>> the tragic past. But it's also true that this clarification could have been better paced, perhaps sprinkled more throughout the novel instead of kinda info-dumping it at the end.

Plot: 3.5/5

As I mentioned, this plot is slow paced. This is not a criticism, but actually a compliment. The main plot is mystery in nature but when I think about it from a post-read perspective, the mystery plot turned out to be quite simple. In order to draw it out and get a novel of a respectable length, the author stretched it whenever she could. And tbh, I don't blame her. The way she stretched this plot was not boring to me. Using an episodic system made each arc stand out beautifully. You get a nice sense of closure after each arc, and then find out that the arcs were still connected through the fil rouge of the main plot. Although it is undeniable that the main plot, from a post-read perspective, is quite simple and you can clearly see that it has been stretched out to the limits in order to fill up the pages.

What I didn't like was the romantic sub-plot. There's a lot of teasing and no release. I get censorship, I do get it, but why tease so much if you're not going to write something under veiled meanings or euphemisms? It would be best, of course, if the author did something like Musuli, who uses such beautiful sensual descriptions that skirt the line between fade-t0-black scenes and rightout p*rn. But if this author can't or won't do that, then tone the teasing down a notch, like in Thousand Autumns for instance. As it is, the romantic sub-plot really falls flat in the end, which is such a pity. In contrast, I absolutely f*cking loved the romantic sub-plots of the side couples. Best side-couples I've read in AGES! Characterisation: 4/5

In terms of characterisation my vote is divided into two: 5/5 for like fourth fifths of the novel, and 3/5 for the ending. The characters are, in general, well-rounded, but with the ending revealing all the facts about the main chracters' tragic past, having a coherent idea of them by the end of the info-dump is kinda hard, so by then I felt like that they fell short. I also preferred the MC pre-ending rather than post-ending because, and I know how absurd it sounds, I think the MC is more well-rounded, reletable and believable before that big event during the ending chapters. IRonically, things were better when they were worse basically. I think that after the ending MC assumes a veil of artificiality and flatness, whereas before this change he truly felt like a travelling companion to me and enjoyed stuffing myself with the He family, skirting around the drama of the Bai family, indulge in the weirdos of the Mo family, and turn my nose at those [swearword] of the Fu family. While, after the big event of the ending, there's a sort of veil that detaches MC from his peers, consequently I felt detached from him too. Now that I see who the author is, I recognise this feeling. This is the exact feeling, maybe worse, I felt at the end of Kaleidoscope of Death. It's like becoming fond of a travelling companion, then at the end the person becomes the tour guide and stays ahead and looked behind benevolently at you like a god on mortals. If you like the shift, good on you, I don't. <<less

I regret I invested more than 10 chapters in this novel. The character and storywriting was sadly really shallow and superficial. The only thing the writer did well was writing some "beautifully" sounding lines, but thats sadly the only quality of the writer. If you want to drown yourself in some random good sounding moments, then its for you - if you expect a creative, complex and deep storyline and characters - better don't waste any time here. 2/5 from me.
