Counterattack of the Cannon Fodder Chambermaid

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

First of all, this is not a story where the cannon fodder chambermaid counterattacks and gives the main wife a beat-down!

As a lowly s*ave who had been sold a total of six times, Xiao Hua has long become apathetic to her situation.

In her past life, she was a cannon fodder chambermaid who was beaten to death. In this life, she decided to turn over a new leaf and live honestly, yet in the end still ended up being sold off.

This prince’s estate seems to have pretty good benefits? She could be released at twenty-five, and they’d arrange a place for her to live under their jurisdiction? They’d even get rid of her s*ave records?

Great! That’s great! Xiao Hua thus decided to stay in the Jing Prince Estate and do her job properly. It’s a shame she could never overcome the whims of fate….

The master she serves is a “mute boy”, with several influences above him watching like tigers eyeing their prey. To say she doesn’t want to be pampered is definitely a lie. This is the road to survival of a “discreet girl” who clings on to her master’s leg and is solely pampered, yet feels that he never pampers her.

The road from a cannon fodder chambermaid to a beloved imperial consort is a little long….

So good. I read it once many years ago and I enjoyed the re reading.

Both leads are interesting. Many side characters have stories that are fun and moving. Even some villans 😁

This one is one of my favorite novels of this genre

Xiao Hua's journey was way too long and tedious for my liking. Having a taciturn male lead didn't help either. Congrats to the writer for being able to carry this book from the female lead's point of view without too many lovey-dovey moments. What I like about this book is the side characters. Their story was more livelier. I guessed I got what the writer wanted to share. Different couples in different situations and how would they face and handle them.

Xiao Hua for example, wanted a quiet life after being... more>> reborn. She never set her eyes on anything higher than her. But, once she tasted it, she wanted more. And one day, she realized she was being too much with her behavior and spent days thinking about it. This was one thing I liked about the way the writer processed the story. She wanted readers to know that humans could be like that. But, that didn't mean they were greedy or needy.

Thank you also to the translator. The journey took us almost a year and it finally ended. <<less

I usually like rebirth stories more than transmigration stories so I was pretty excited about this one. At first I really liked it. The female lead wasn't over the top and was steady. I feel like the author was trying not to give her too many cheat codes and I really appreciated that. And I wouldn't have minded the read so much if only the author wasn't so repetitive in their writing. Seriously, you would be reading about how handsome the ML is in one paragraph, and barely into the... more>> third, the author would beginning explaining it again about how only the ML can have such beautiful phoenix eyes. And I get that the only life she known all her past life was the life in the courtyard, but she is constantly bringing up the same old things that she had already before in past chapters or paragraphs. I mean I liked the plot, it is different and I loved that she wasn't some 21st century transmigrater that is automatically smarter than everyone else, but a person who was born, raised, and had to live through the teaching of that time but still able to develop a mind of their own. However my one pet peeve is just how repetitive the author is with their words. If they fixed that, I think the overall chapters could have been shorten by quite a few chapters. If you don't mind repetition., go ahead and read it.

I feel like the author did try to not make the villain's so one dimensional

Spoiler

When the ML was recounting his past death, you see that it was the Jing Consort who betrayed him and eventually delivered the poison wine to him. She insulted him and all, but you also can't help but pity her at the last moment when she eventually tears up, asking him not to blame her because she only had the one son left, and she couldn't let him die too. Some people might say that she was the one who started it first and/or that if she has just stayed put he would have protected them anyways. But knowing his communication style, I doubt he told her anything of his little plans. And also, you place these people in a competitive field and expect them not to worry and scheme for their lives? Does everyone look like bodhisattva to him? And when she mocks him for thinking that his inner courtyard was harmonious, you could hear frustration in her voice. I mean if it was me, I would be so f*cken annoyed too. You create a competitive environment and then expect people to get along all jolly and happy. You get to live a life of oblivion while everyone else has to live life on constant edge. If he didn't even have to smarts to notice that people were killing each other behind his back, then I would understand where her frustration, disappointment, and eventual betrayal came from. He not only proved that he was incompetent once, he proved it more than twice. He said so himself, that in his past life, whatever he did, the crazy new emperor was out to get him and every other prince. I really think she felt like it was a last resort for her as well. Honestly, it would have been interesting to see a short story from her perspective in their first life.

It's weird because it seems like the author themselves know that this is pretty logical, but because the ML is still the main lead, they could only circle it back around to say that, in the end he is still the main lead so she is the ultimate bad person here. But to compromise, they added in the little insert saying that, the ML didn't like her, but he couldn't bring himself to hate her either after seeing her cry. So basically it's like ML also knows himself that she had it hard, but still wants to hold it against her because he still feels wronged even though he was the one that forced them into that position.

[collapse]

And I know this is historical and that back then it was like this but

Spoiler

it's hard to get rid of the 21st century mindset here okay. When you think about it and it kicks in, doesn't it weird people out that she is literally 14 or 15 years old and he is this 25 or 26 years old when they did it. Like I know, I know that this is historical and that this was normal back then, but just thinking about it... she was a kid and he was this grown ass adult. And also, why do the FL always have to be kids. I know the authors can tweak some things a little. Like make them older and say that that was their disadvantage. That would have been interesting to see. Its like they are basically saying that younger is better or that only young people are attractive. That's kind of...

I wouldn't have minded it so much if their little awkward relationship had lasted for much longer where they both began to understand and trust each other more and she got older. His record as an apathetic obstinate monk went down the drain too quickly. If it took just that for him to get off then I don't know how much to believe him when he says he wasn't the type to be active in bedroom affairs. Maybe it wasn't that he wasn't interested in bedroom affairs, but that he really was just more attracted to younger people...😬😬😬

It would have been nice to see that she was more involved in his schemes too. And by that I don't mean like his strategist or right hand man with a halo, but someone he trusts enough to send out for messages or for small but also important tasks. Instead, she is just stuck in the courtyard waiting for him to come see her. It's disappointing because you almost see no new growth in her. All that you see now is the things that she learned and brought over from her last life, but what about this life. What new things did she learn in this life time that have developed her even more as a person?

I'm not gonna rate this as I haven't read it and I don't plan to with all the reviews I've read from this.

I gather that this book was realistic and may not agree with some readers moral views. So take this as a warning that if you want your ML to be clean, respectful and loyal then this ML was not for you. So steer away and let's not rate this low when in fact it's unjustifiable to rate a book based on expectations you wanted when it's initial intention... more>> was to portray an opposite view and goals from what you expected. This book wanted to be realistic about how women were treated in ancient times and if we're being realistic here, it's hard to find a decent men during those times, they exist but they are real. That does not mean that all protagonist written there have to have one. This book never intended to be fluffy but to provoke and challenge a thought or your views.

I hope you reconsider reading this first if you're not comfortable with a s*umbag backward thinking ML. <<less

Entertaining enough but the author definitely improved in the follow-up novel with the fierce consort. The court intrigue bits without the MC and ML are boring because connections with royal characters were not established as well as in the fierce consort novel.

I read this to pass the time since I had read the Yun Prince side first. (Lofty consort is too fierce) and thus since I know the political throne snatching bits already, those I skimmed through.

The harem fighting part was also pretty dull.

What I honestly enjoyed was the FL’s struggles at the beginning of the novel when she was still at the Ruan household and when she was a chambermaid trying to live. Those were interesting and then it was more about FL and ML’s affections for one another.

My favourite... more>> part that made me cry is honestly the extra about Qiao-shi and her initially wayward husband. Now that is a hella epic story and the way she conquered her facecon husband in the end is BOSS. If you just want to read the extras, read the beginning of this story till FL gets sold. And then this spoiler:

Spoiler

Due to Ruan Siyi’s mother being greedy, she leaks some rumors about FL being a sl*t climbing the bed of her son to be a concubine and then was sold. She wanted to sully FL’s reputation since she’s the Emperor’s favourite concubine. After some trials, she is ordered to hang herself by the Emperor for spreading slander and lies. Ruan Siyi’s family falls from grace. Qiao-shi’s plan was to make him love her and then leave him brutally. Heh. Read the extra to find out what happens. It is so good.

I loved the story and got invested reading halfway. The first half was promising and I liked Xiao Hua's journey on how she ended up as a concubine to the ML. I liked reading about her struggles, her loneliness, and her conflicting views basically her struggle in opening up to the ML and adjusting to her new position. But once she secured the ML's affection, the tone and flow of the story kinda fell through.

Specifically how the story shifted from the inner harem to the struggle of succession.

Even tho the way the miscommunication happened was kinda s*upid but it was a good plot to hook me back bec it gave the FL who's so dependent on the ML a chance to widen her world outside him instead of only being the good obedient mistress and have a chance to live for herself and her children. It also gave the children a shot at having a normal childhood with other children to play with and also introduce wise older characters that serve as a good guardian and teacher to the FL which I noticed the author is good at whenever the FL is in a new environment (Granny Wang, Nana He, and the old commoner lady next door). Definitely a plus point in my book since I love these kinds of tropes that serves as a plot device and calls out the protagonists flaws and help them better their character.

Overall, I liked the East Yuling alley arc next to Jing Estate arc. It was nice but could be executed better. The FL and ML making up wasn't satisfactory enough, there really wasn't any substantial change in the two protagonists power dynamics aside from better communication/no secrets between them. The ML still treats the FL the same and the FL is still heavily dependent on him.

Her character arc of relying on herself, respecting her emotions, and making her point was basically thrown out of the window once the ML finally told her what's happening and then collected her back.

Afterwards it goes meh from there. The plot moving forward was actually okay but it lacks depth and the FL and ML became one-dimentional, flat, and uninteresting. At this point, it's no different from other romance stories where both the ML and FL are so harmonious, they receive all the good things without struggle, there's no conflict between them and all those that comment or oppose are harshly rebuked and dealt with.

There were so many opportunities in the capital arc where the author could have deepen the FL/ML's character but sadly missed. The execution of the story and the other characters could've been handled better imo.

I've mostly felt morally uncomfortable on the latter half of the story once the rear palace conflict started.

It's starting to seem like a story about a good mistress and a righteous husband conspiring together to overthrow the evil main wife.

The FL is becoming too much of a white lotus her personality is getting lost in her portrayal as the good trusting wife and mother of ML's children. She doesn't even dare to have thoughts and just shoves things at the back of her mind or shoves them to the ML to handle.

Where's her agency at this point? It's like once she secured herself she became a blank character again which was a pity as if she reverted back to her unguarded self in her previous lifetime.

My main criticism is how self-absorbed the FL and the lack of empathy and understanding towards other women. I guess this is the drawback of being pampered and spoiled and failing to see other people's struggle outside of her own.

It's as if she lost herself once she reached favor imo. While she's no longer impulsive, arrogant, and learned how to be careful, I prefer her personality pre-concubine.

It's human nature to be empathetic to the underdog. And the FL had long stopped being the disadvantaged and pitiful once she became the favored concubine. Which I guess explains why I lost interest along the way and discontent with the way the FL (lack thereof) handled things.

No matter how you pretend to be good, it doesn't change the fact that your position is still a concubine who has robbed the main wife her rights. Which doesn't make you innocent. The author may justify it by painting Xiao-shi as a "bad" person in both lifetimes but it's clear that the ML and FL aren't any better. It's just irritating to read them act hypocritical and the other character's fate is just too cruel.

It doesn't hurt to admit that they've also wronged other people even if they never physically harmed them.

If the situation was reversed a lot of people would surely have been raising their pitchforks to the concubine that hogged someone else's husband.

I would've preferred the FL lead to have been empathetic towards other women. This is why I rated this below other novels like To be a Virtuous Wife mainly bec how other FLs treat other women in the harem. Ironically I guess it's too much to ask for a traditional woman to be tolerant of her husband's other women. And Xiao Hua is a very perfect definition of a traditional woman. <<less

I loved the ML.

Although I kept reading comments complaining about him, I still feel he was completely justified in the way he treated his main wife and the rest of the concubines.

This a romance story with a bit of political struggle, just enough to keep things interesting but not too much to become heavy or stressful.

... more>> The fun moments, the loveable interactions, the author's notes, the pampering, the slightly more modest slapping face, the moral dilemmas and all the cannon fodder were extremely entertaining.

5/5 for sure also, the side stories are amazing 😍 <<less

Honestly its kinda werid bc usually I dont really like maid tropes MC, plus she aint transmigrated person or having any golden finger, no OP at all.

But this is the charm! Giving such a realistic thoughts of a women during that ancient shitty time. She could be vicious enough but she still thoughts of life very dearly and would not kill you, she has kind yet weak heart. There's one event where I thought she's so annoying but then again I realize, she's not a modern person, she aint a... more>> cultivator nor having golden finger, she's just a chambermaid and living her entire life in ancient times, ofc she had those thoughts!

She's not a baddie. She would rather endure than strike back. Most of the time passive but sometimes she can bite your ass.

She's rather bland for me since I like those fierce lil baddie, but her chara is likeable tho, cute and daring esp in few event.

But I really like how both FL and ML showed their way of interact? Someone surely will not agree but idk man they feel peacfull to me. Both of them were a quiet type, esp the prince since hes rarely talk but I like it where it shown that ML likes to stroke FL hair while FL likes to hold his fingers, and both of them would do so quietly while doing their own business like reading a book.

For the r@pe parttttttt then again this setting take in ancient time.. She's a sl@ve, and the other is her master. She reject = she die, story end! This is the most yikes part in ancient setting story, we will (mostly) encountered such an event in those kind of ancient time setting, plus the title is chambermaid..... Idk man...

Spoiler

Dont worry for the segs scene. ML didnt viciously make her couldnt walk for three days, couldnt blame him for everything since he saw everyone in his mansion as his own which is he could do anything to them since that what its thought to him for sure, hes a prince anw. And again he would stop when FL said its painful, and he learn from those mistakes by learning from somebody LMFAO so yea in next segs, FL said she really enjoy it 🥴btw FL aint passive in segs, she even teach him some ways to make her and both of them 'happy' 🤫 for the r@pe imo its in first till second segs (?) bc she enjoyed the rest (iirc) and ML always said he cherised her b4 making out :)

[collapse]

SUGGEST : dont ever read ancient setting novels really you will mostly encountered r@pe part

Btw oot but at this point I dont even yk get weird ass confusion if this story telling a maid turned into empress. I mean in ancient time everything could really happend tho, as long as you have those requirement esp beauty and emperor favor ofc.

AND ALSO for Qiao shi and Ruan siyi story, dude could've write better ending for that poor woman. Why would she end up with the person who disgrace her, humilate her, trampled her, and making her insecure maybe almost gone crazy for years?!

The first time line even worse, bc RY still live gracefully, QS life was no better than dying, and even when she died she have no child bc that poop rat RY would not touch her jst bc she's ugly :)

I hate this idea. She should've end up with a man who loves her more than anything instead of some douche who realize his wife worth after his family misfortune making him a commoner lol, and he start noticing he bc she loses weight....... Mmmm wtf.... <<less

4/5 Prequel to The Lofty Fierce Consort. Thankfully not as melodramatic, and in fact quite sweet for the most parts. Still quite draggy but at least it's mostly not from harem struggles, or at least not directly. FL is understanding and ML is silent but not cold, and quite direct when he needs to. Overall an ok read.

This is one of those rare novels where it truely feels like it takes place in ancient times. As such. You have to keep in mind the customs of those days, and only then will you appreciate how the story goes. Some are upset the ML isn't "Clean", but it truely suits the story (it would be crazy if he was at that age according to the customs). And the way their relationship progresses is naturally satisfying.

I am honestly slighty disapointed that he did manage to raise her that... more>> high given her status, but I guess fantasy does need a bit of ompf to it, and at the very least it was done in a logical manner.

I sincerly reccomend the story to all, and the epilogues are satisfying.

Please note this story has major spoilers for the two other books in this universe. <<less

4 stars, but only because of “The Lofty Fierce Consort”, which I enjoyed more. If I hadn’t read LFC first this would be a 3 star

Its an OK story, but too much mention was made of the ML father’s palace intrigue, which was interesting in LFC, but didn’t add anything to this story

Rate 3.5/5 for me

This is not the kind of novel for me. I did't see any counterattack, not so much face slapping, mostly are trying to survive and avoid problems.

Kinda like slice-of-life novel with lots-of-good-things-for-MC.

... more>> Some issues that should be detailed, but have just the summary, some issues that should be summarized, but have too much details. Some chapters look like existed there just for the NC scenes.

Some parts are boring and I keep scrolling pass, some are quite funny and readable.

The MC is ok, not so annoying, the ML is cute in his way.

I didn't like the side stories, I think the novel should end shorter and left the rest to be imagined.

If you have some free time then read it, if not, it's nothing you missed here. <<less

I love this novel. I cannot stop reading it. I bench read it for 3 days straight.

It's cool how the author bring you something shocking just when your about to lose interest.

The translator did a great job at translating the novel that they even included all the author notes. Thank you very much Translator-san. I love you!

I recomend this story if you want cute children, funny side characters, shocking small events, right amount of sexy time and lovely lead couple.

I love this story. Even there was a harem drama but with a man who love you wholeheartedly and do anything for your happiness it was a dream for every women.

Who doesn't want man like this. You don't have to put an ounce of energy to fight other women who want to be a third party. He deal with it I like it.

In many novel even the man love the woman deeply but still the woman to think how to counterattack the other party. If it happen to me it... more>> really tired me out. Like going to war. War in the real balltlefield is more easy than war in backyard. So much brain cells to use. <<less

Well, how should I put this... It's like a 🎢 ride and I unconsciously finish this in 2 days.

The ML being the most rational and picture how an ordinary MEN would act if they have power and money. Meanwhile I love how the FL, although her fate seems rather tough and rough, she learned how to stand up for herself, even though again the ML being a MAN he is, stands behind her all the time.

I just hate how fckng realistic the author made the ML to be. Like theyre... more>> living in monarchy era, where woman's dignity isn't as high as knights' horses. Where the FL only got the attention of the ML through their "relationship in bed".

But somehow it's also unrealistic how the ml, although have a harem, chose to live monogamously with the FL. Like that isn't how it should be. If the author tried to portray him as some realistic character of male in that era, should he also sleeps with his other wives?

But yeah, it's fictional after all.

Well it's a good read and 5 stars worth tho ✨ <<less

Tldr the title does not fit the novel AT ALL. There is NO revenge being taken nor any face-slapping.

.

+I feel like upon reflection, it's important to keep in mind this is the author's first or one of their first works, so honestly can't blame them too much, but it is what it is.

Note that the author really cares for ALL of her characters, antagonists or no, so if you're like me and can't stand the antagonists who ab*se the MC being written over and over as being morally grey (as in they have their reasons bla bla bla for you to feel sorry for them), this is not for you.

About the MC - tldr great, but role falls off eventually

Spoiler

MAJOR SPOILERS - The MC is great at first. She's strong in her own way but relatable in the sense that she can't fix everything and the world (ie author) WILL NOT bend to her advantage like in other novels. I still prefer the latter than stories that are overly realistic because why would I want to read depressing sht when life is already sht. However– and I can't fault the author too much considering her role as just a concubine– she becomes a background reacting and taking care of her children for the most part.

[collapse]

-

Finally decided to drop because the author's storytelling and mindset just isn't doing it for me. What they found funny, what they thought was logical.. The main characters were fun to follow when they have their sweet moments, but the conflicts thrown at them and the way they react to it.. Just isn't it. Too much pandering trying to make readers not hate all the characters. Just not it for me. I would reccomend to give a try because the translation is FANTASTIC (thank you so much TLer), but the writing just made it a slog for me to get through. <<less

Really good and very much worth it!

There are some things you have to forgive though. Mainly its the age the heroine is the when the hero gets her into bed and the the hero’s initial inadequacies in bed that make it painful for the heroine at first.

One of the major character developments in this book is the hero realizing that he is not good in bed and that he has to fix it. This whole situation can technically be considered r*pe but the heroine doesn’t look at it that way... more>> and the hero is not some evil guy who ab*ses young girls on purpose either so I didn’t focus on it too much. I was very relieved when he figured things out though.

Most of my good rating is because I just like how the hero dealt with the politics. It takes a lot of maneuvering and a lot of time for the heroine to end up his wife in the and most of that maneuvering is done by the male lead. I liked that. It wasn’t the heroine scheming to get to the top it was the hero scheming to put her there! Very nice! <<less

The novel's quality is good but I won't return. It's one of the countless other novels where I read once and wouldn't be bothered to reread a second time. Why? Because it is generic.

First of all, realism, slow romance, good character development, good novel quality does not make it an extraordinary novel. It is great but not extraordinary because there are other novels that have the same characteristics. When I look at a novel, I want something new that other novels haven't tried.

A female protag being forced to adapt to... more>> her situation and historical circumstances is realistic. She is what you could expect for a good protag but there are countless like her. Her story is therefore generic.

All the grievances she felt for being shoved into the path she didn't want, being forced to fight with other for a man's favor, being treated as a s*x toy and birth machine, those are true for women of her time but I know this from the countless Asian historical dramas and comics and novels already. Did the author do something to make her story different from what I had already known? No. The female protag is still that damsel who by circumstances had to swallow her own grievances and then in the end lived a life like any girl of the time would live (secure the continuous favour of her husband, birth a heir, support her heir, fight back other heirs and concubines). While it 's true that not everything I listed there existed in this novel like the fighting back other heirs but if there is they would unfold the same way. They are the same. Then why do I have to read it? Honestly, I just sought the spoiler and I got the same level of enjoyment out of that. It's the same as my city has 200 bread selling stores. They are breads and they tasted the same so why do I need to choose a specific store if they are not cheaper or closer to my house?

I was hoping that some things would be different when I read this novel. A change is what I want. Like the male main characters realised it in some way and he did some things to change things for her. I didn't get any of that so this novel is great and in good. Quality but generic story-wise. <<less
