On that day, the fog blocked everything.

On that day, he became the captain of a ghost ship.

On that day, he stepped through the thick fog and confronted a completely subverted and fragmented world— the old order had vanished, strange phenomena dominated the endless seas beyond civilized society, and isolated island city-states and fleets of ships challenged the sea that had become the last ember of lights for the civilized world. All of this while the shadows of the old days were still stirring in the deep sea, waiting to devour this world that was about to die.

But for the new captain of the ghost ship Vanished, there was only one question he had to consider first — Who knows how to steer this ship?!

First, warning: the linked TL kinda sucks, a lot of the complaints are caused by it. It's extremely flowery and imo reads like when you really need to reach a word count, literally doubles the length of some paragraphs compared to MTL (and even adds some new ones). Some people like that style, but it isn't the author's.

The story itself is really good at first, but it makes the mistake of MC being too OP and benevolent for the serious parts to hit. Great comedy and eldritch horror, and even... more>> some of the serious parts are great... but then you think "why doesn't MC do the thing he did in the first big arc" and bam, interest gone.

It feels pretty inspired by 40k, and Google TL even calls the "subspace" the Warp sometimes. Priests swing incense to bless machinery, and there's a warrior nun that shouts "HERESY!" while slaughtering heretics with a sword and machine gun... many other things too.

Even though I'm probably not going to finish it, I still recommend reading this. Really interesting mysteries, great slice of life parts (my favorite honestly), and some drama that manages to make you really care about some random side characters within a few chapters. The OP MC thing bothers me later on, but it clearly doesn't bug everyone! <<less

This novel is absolutely riveting. Especially if you're a fan of the SCP universe. I'm not quite sure if it was a deliberate choice on the author's part or not (since most of the similarities are subtle) but the are a lot things that remind me of the SCP universe. The biggest and most obvious difference is that everyone is aware of the supernatural and the struggle to remain safe and sane is a part of everyone's life. (And the world setting is wildly different from Earth.)

The world building... more>> is absolutely fascinating and very well done. At this point at least, I have noticed any inconsistencies in the world building either, which always nice. No author is perfect, but obvious inconsistencies are irritating as hell.

I really like the MC. He's still struggling to understand his situation (and that is one of the most intriguing mysteries in the novel) but he becomes more confident of himself and his power as the novel progresses. All of the side character's are also very well written. The only one that kind of feels two dimensional is the MC's talking dove that is mostly there as comedic and as a plot device for resolving certain issues. Even there though, the author keeps us guessing about how intelligent it is and lays in hints of deeper mysteries involved with it.

The rest of the characters feel very 3d, with realistic motivations that match their character and circumstances. The side characters actually get a fairly large amount of "screen" time, but it always serves to drive the plot forward.

I definitely plan to keep reading this novel. <<less

This is awsome.. I had read LOM and reading it's 2nd part but this book is not same as LOM.. only similarities is that both have lot of mystries.. This novel have more myterious than LOM with appropriate amount of comedy.. MC is op from start but his power is simple.... and MC is very very smart more smart than any other mc's I had ever came across... he doesn't even miss a single weird thing that may come back to bite him... and best thing is that he shares... more>> his finding with other unlike most MC who just depend on luck to solve mystries he use others.... Best chinese novel and there is no arrogant character... zero arrogant character and people's act very similer to reality... but the world is way too fking mysterios.. and yeah world is 1900 year era of our world but more advance in some field due to the nature of world... and rightious church in this novel is actually good unlike other C.N where all church are either hypocrite or evil for the shake of evil.... It become by top 3 novel... I had read hundrends of novels. <<less

This is a Lovecraftian tale of a ghost captain. The world is awesome, the interactions are funny and the story is convoluted and mysterious.

The author unfortunately doesn't manage to blend these elements (the story is either mysterious or funny, not both at the same time), but still it is very enjoyable to read.

Really fun story which builds a really interesting and engaging arc, just finished the first story arc and would recommend everyone to try it out. Also lacking the some of the more repetitive tropes that most light novels possess nowadays :)

Characters are quite unserious. The mystery is fine but it feels like the author tried to make every character and scene comedic for no reason.

I'd say that it's good enough to bring me back after leaving it. My first read was till c59, and since then I've left it for 2 months to bulk up on chapters. Getting back on it was easy, the book still intrigues me even with the 2 months of absence, and even now I'm still waiting for more translated chapters to come out.

As some said the first few chapters are rather slow, but it's all good after.

Thanks to the translators who've brought one of the best I've read in... more>> this genre. <<less

The story is well executed and the world building is amazing. Most of the mysteries is interconnected and has a clear foreshadowing. (Unlike most webnovels nowadays which churned out mysteries out of nowhere and then quickly forget it).

This novel is a lovecraftian horror tale mixed with SCP. The world in the story is like a dying ember that can be extinguished at any time, plagued by many unspeakable and terrifying thing. MC understands the urgency and proactively investigates what is happening to the world he lives in.

My only biggest gripe... more>> with this novel is that sometimes the author spends too many paragraphs over-explaining very mundane things. Basically unnecessary over-exposition for information that has no use to the story. Even so, this doesn't happen very often and it's not a big deal in term of story, but still greatly impact on the reading experience. <<less

I can only say - Deep Sea Embers really sets my blood boil! The thrill of every arc's chapters and how everything is connected. Very good foreshadowing. The setting, as other readers stated already, is grounded on "Lovecraft setting" and Lord of the Mysteries (also loved that one, too) to which I personally like, the mysteries are properly laid out.

For me, the story is well executed. Enough for me to marathon read all existing chapters in less than 3 days.

Pros:

  1. Completely unique world building which is gradually unveiled.
  2. Morally good protagonist who also doesn't hold back against evildoers.
  3. All characters are generally competent and not nerfed to make MC look better.
  4. Misunderstandings do not linger for long because MC is really good at communicating.
  5. Has pretty good horror every so often.
Cons:

  1. Chapters can be a bit repetitive and overtly descriptive.
  2. Mysteries are sometimes layered way too much before finally getting resolved.
Overall recommend reading especially if you got tired of reading template isekai/xianxias.

My assessment could be a little biassed, considering I enjoy novels set in Victorian period.

As the novel is in its earliest phases, I don't really have much to say, everything I say will effectively be a tiny spoiler.

There are Visions, Anomalies, subspace, churches, hidden organisations, gods... which provide a lot of LoM feelings to me.

Pacing is excellent, and translation is properly done.

Rating: 9+/10 (take it with a grain of salt, as I've only read 100 chaps)

Translation+writing: 9/10

As a horror novel 'deep sea embers' is more developed on the gore thriller part rather than the supernatural yet it manages to slowly mix the three into something that might develop into one of the better horror stories we can find around this site.

What I highly appreciate in this novel is the world that is not overly described as we rather start exploring it with the protagonist. Little by little many mysteries starts converging on top of the Vanished and as questions starts pilling it seems like the goal... more>> of this novel is not to bring simple and straightforward answers that would fulfill the instant curiosity of the reader but rather build up the anticipation for some grand reveals later on that might not be the best case scenario for the MC.

I would recommend this story to anyone that enjoyed the slower paced but way better written Lord of Mysteries that is focused on what the character has to prepare before facing dangers rather than being fixed upon the concept of strong will and emotional attachment. <<less

The story is great overall. It is very engaging for all arcs except the end. The story is a mix of adventure, mystery, and a bit of eldritch horror element, also with some action. There are some comedic moments in the story too. Although action and eldritch horror element is reduced after arc1 and arc2, the rest of the story are still interesting. Even if there is less action in the later arc, the mystery and exploration event makes up for it. I was a bit disappointed with the last arc, as it is very evidently not well polished and was rushed to end the story. I understand that the author wanted to end the story to write another novel (From what I understand anyway, might not be true). But I felt like this novel's plotline still has many plot points that can be expanded.
Spoiler

Example plot points - more city states like the cold port, more cultists action, flame bearers, the signs of the world's failing, city state intrigue, and subspaces

[collapse]
Arc1 and Arc2 were so great, especially the finale. It is such a shame that the story ended without exploring the plot points.

Characters (5/5)

The novel's characters are done well for the most part. The personalities, character development, and interactions. What I felt was that while it is indeed solid, I think there should still be more interactions and development between the main characters.
Spoiler

Like, relationship between duncan and tyrian could be another arc of their own. More insights into nina and her sun identity. The relationship between the two agathas. Etc.

[collapse]
Nevertheless, the characters are done well enough that I don't feel irritated with any character.

Translation (5/5)

I read bcat translations. There are very few errors. The words were well chosen. There are times when I felt like some part of the story is missing. It might be because the translator forgot that part or the author really wrote like that, but I only felt like this very rarely. Solid 5/5 translation. <<less

For now the story is interesting, it makes you wonder how the world ended up like this? I was very struck by its concept, especially its 'sun' and 'night'.

The theme of the sea is also very interesting. For me the sea is beautiful but, clearly only what it shows on the surface, even if you don't have thalassophobia you know that the depths of the sea are dangerous and unknown, something really scary and that's what I like.

I actually imagine the world like One Piece but in a twisted way.

It's... more>> like LOTM but instead of seeing space (above) you see the sea (below)

(This reminded me of the intro of Pacific Rim, great movie ❤️)

There are also characters that stole my heart, without a doubt it was the doll and the inquisitor. Although I admit that it is somewhat annoying that it has more female characters than male ones.

I understand that the author likes beautiful women (who doesn't?) in LOTM he shows it in the same way. While I know this is another novel that doesn't try to be like LOTM and doesn't have romance and harem, I would also like to see some young male characters. 😮‍💨 <<less

It's an Epic Sci-fi Fantasy.

I can even say it's epic that's roughly at the same level as LoTR (perhaps I'm exaggerating, but it's purely subjective POV ngl).

If there's one problem.... Is how there's not enough epilogue content, otherwise it's amazing read, well except the second city-states arc, which is still good but mostly at the beginning and end.

... more>> Anyways it's an Epic of Humanity, it's warm story.

Try it, I prefer reading it raw with Google Translate, because it seem the translation have some minor change, example some Chinese-esque comedy is somewhat changed for English reader.

Anyways try it, it's amazing. <<less

Neat worldbuilding and mysteries. This is one of those stories whose quality is made apparent by the comment section on the chapters. Every so often some random commenter theorizes a wall of text, or there's a comment chain pointing out subtle hints or intricacies in the story. This is also one of the rare series that (as of CH666 at least) consistently puts in a good dash of good humor every so often. One moment I appreciated was having a chapter end with characters on land discussing the terror of... more>> Alice Guillotine, and the next chapter begins with a goofy Alice on the ship.

In all fairness I don't like that some characters have a formulaic interaction with MC (i.e. MC and Shirley's interactions are mainly repetitions of the "do your homework" gag. MC and Nina is just Nina hugging him smiling), and I'm not a fan that overall every new character follows the scared of MC before realizing otherwise and ending up in warm sappy relationship with him.

The mystery plots are also a bit loose. I don't always feel completely "satisfied" with how everything is resolved. There are also issues such as the story making a huge deal about a key revelation
Spoiler

the nun's mu*der occurring earlier than expected

[collapse]
, but the revelation doesn't have any significance.

However, this is a good enough series that I don't care about the flaws. I'm excited to read the rest. <<less
