In order to fulfill his lifelong wish and graduation project of researching merfolks, Desharow, a student of Biology Department of Russian Maritime Academy, went on a long distance voyage with his mentor, Rhine, and caught a special species of male Merfolk in Iceland. Little did he know that this mysterious dark and evil creature had long since regarded him as his “prey” (cough cough spouse) and had been invading his body, leading to an unexpected trigger to a thrilling conflict.

In the end, can the merman’s instinctive desire prevail or not, and will the research of Desharow proceed smoothly under the obstruction of his mentor with the same misguided idea? What is the real purpose of the investigation that seems to be hidden in the presence of military forces when a terrifying conspiracy dating back to World War II begins to emerge….?

With the development of the research and the frequent occurrence of various dangerous incidents at sea, emotional struggle, and instinctive love, Desharow soon discovers some incredible connection toward the evil black-scaled merman and how his body has undergone some unique alteration.

I really wanted to like this, mostly because I heard good things from those who'd gotten past the unsavoury topics, but I couldn't do it. One of my biggest turnoffs is public s*x and exhibitionism, and Desharows violation and the recording of it by the scientists put me off this completely. It's not often I read something that leaves as bad of a taste in my mouth as this, but I'm going to throw in the towel now.

5/5 for the writing though

If you're willing to lose brain cells you may read this. Too indecisive MC. He was said to have strength from ML but he still kept getting push by mere humans. Things wouldn't have gotten worst if MC just had a tad bit more IQ and logic reasoning. I don't even know where they are sometimes, translation I guess.

Rhine lived too long through the series and they had so many opportunity to get rid of him but of course the author need him to advance plot. I don't know author-san where your logic is.

Omggg this is so fresh !! Awesome! Cool story. I really like this novel, the plot is exciting and easy to understand, the writing is full of suspense, the translation is great, the characters are well developed too. I love the consistency of their thoughts and behaviours, the pace of the plot is just nice, and this is my first time reading a bl novel about mermaid too, so cool.

I used to be a fan of werewolf and omegaverse theme, this novel just have the same vibe and thus receiving... more>> lots of love from me, really 🥰 <<less

It’s not horrible, but I do feel that the s*xual aspects overshadow the plot and worldbuilding.

Someone else said that this could have been shorter, but I felt like each arc could have been it’s own more fleshed out novel. As I said to my partner reading, I was disappointed at how little was in this.

I’ll talk about each arc and my personal feelings about it. I will be using the character’s names here.

Spoiler

Arc 1: Rhine, Agares and Desharow

Rhine needed to be less... Rhine. There’s no build up. He throws out s*xual assault as a punishment and consistently exists afterwards as a Yandere interested in Desharow. There’s little building of their relationship and I wasn’t convinced they had a student/mentor relationship reading it. Sure. It was said they do, but the actions towards each other wasn’t reflective of this.

Agares could have solved a lot if he spoke to Desharow immediately. But he didn’t. Honestly he’s interesting as a species, and the reason I continued Arc 1 anyways.

Desharow is an idiot. Like. Point blank I’m surprised he didn’t die in the first arc.

I loved the mind control and erasure that occurred. The way it builds Agares as a manipulative creature.

I would have preferred if there was more biology involved with the Biologists. Like clearly Rhine isn’t one but you’d think that would be reflected more in the plot.

This arc establishes the s*xual relationship between Desharow and Agares. With blink and you miss it foreshadowing and character introductions. Of characters with minimal involvement. Honestly my second favourite arc. 3/5

Spoiler

Arc 2, Back to the Island.

Tell me why you introduced a predator species, and never expanded on it. Between the fact that Rhine and Sarakos’s military involvement could have been better handled, and better revealed. The pirates were discarded as immediately as they came in.

Desharow’s still enamoured by the merman. The merman is still violent and manipulative. Rhine is still a rapist who is 1 dimensional.

The entire Arc is to build Agares up as some powerful entity. I was majorly disappointed in this arc. But c’est la vie. At least there was an attempt to expand on the universe. 2/5

Spoiler

Arc 3: Island, na*is and Cannon Fodder

na*i plotline is used to make Agares look better. Otherwise, useless. So bloody useless.

Does anyone remember Lia (?) Davis and the others? No? Because they hardly got screentime, we’re meant to believe that they’re important to Desharow and then yeah, they kind of only move the plot forward.

The promise they’d all succeed against the na*is was s*upid, even counting they had military training, that wasn’t going to happen.

Desharow attempting to run away when he’s in the middle of mutations made me scream. I wanted to rip my hair out.

Yakimura. A sweetheart. Still jack all about him as a person even in later arcs.

I wish we got more about the island and the culture that the Merpeople have with it. We don’t. Ant then a hurricane comes and destroys everything and Desharow stares into the abyss. Oh and merpeople are aliens? Never expanded on. Fairly certain we learn Agares helped raise Desharow in this arc. And is, in merculture, his biological father. The in*est doesn’t end here. 1/5 I couldn’t stand this arc.

Spoiler

Arc 4: Amnesia, Mafia and Transdimensional Merpeople

We start this back in Desharow’s diary. We learn he lost his memory and after regaining it, he desperately looks for Agares but eventually disregards it all as a hallucination.

Literally all in the first chapter. We get told this. Rather than the chance to explore it. I hate amnesia tropes but give me that over the diary stuff. I want to see him connect with the crew and deal with his issues over time.

Then we land in Venice. He apparently is friends with Nick and the salvage girl. Again. Nothing reflects this really. A bit of banter but then they are irrelevant until the author needs them again.

Captain of the ship lost his hand? Eh no big deal.

Agares mutates and feeds on people to have a human form. How? He can randomly develop mutations.

Desharow and hum f*cking reverses it. Do they stop? No. Does it get them in trouble. Yes. Oh and Agares is infected with dark matter and could kill Desharow.

Desharow, the king of learns nothing. Kind of just keeps deciding to do dumb things. Like run after Agares onto the na*i ship where he saw Rhine.

It’s all good he was disguised. Rhine still recognized him but Agares rescued our poor damsel.

By this point I was a bit fed up between their dynamic and Desharow’s personality. But the dark matter stuff pulled me in.

We get Yukimura and his Asura’s backstory. Then Yukimura dies. All in a few chapters.

Oh and Rhine KNOWS it’s Desharow now and is again, threatening r*pe. Desharow manages to get into the dive to the Hiroshima bomb (cause of the dark matter and destruction of Atlantis.)

Mutant Merpeople merged with mutant spider crabs. Terrifying ordeals. We also find out Desharow was first r*ped by Agares as a teen. Which was either a plot hole from the author or a lie from Agares. Given how badly the plot is structured, I could say the former.

Desharow is sent through the wormhole/portal/time-tunnel, with a scale to change the past and prevent the destruction of Atlantis.

Oh yeah and his new friends also die.

Without the interesting plots around the dark matter premise, and some lore about the Yiola, I would have dropped the book here. But because of that, I’ll give a solid 3.5/5

Spoiler

Arc 5: Alternate Dimensions, Reincarnation, Child s*xual ab*se, Disappointment

I probably won’t finish the last chapter, but man this kind of s**ked. First off we are captured as a merman on Yukimura’s ship. Turns out he’s working for his evil scientist father, Shinichi, who genuinely matters the most in this arc, for 10 lines, maybe a little more. Shinichi, Sarakos and Rhine are the major villains by the way. And they suck at it.

After escaping, this leads into Desharow finds alternate Agares, can’t figure out how to give the scale in his chest to them, comes up with the idea they f*ck to do it. Blatant just throwing s*x in there because we can. s*x doesn’t work entirely at the start. Need to do it a few times first.

Then we’re also thrown into Asura and Yukimura’s plotline as well. Saving merpeople from the Imperialist Japanese army.

Levjet, Desharow’s grandfather, is a prisoner of war here. Oh wait. He’s also a merman. And sent to join the humans as punishment for not agreeing to a world domination plan. Wooo.

I cannot state, this isn’t an exaggeration. This is the plot. I’m not mentioning every bit, but I’m structuring it the best I can. Because there’s so much with no substance.

Rhine, through Shinichi’s meddling, becomes a merman for the sole purpose of trying to r*pe Desharow. And then kills him by ripping open his tail.

Why does that matter? Because Agares has been healing Desharow since like? Act one or two. With his tongue and saliva. And blood worked better later. But yeah, Desharow dies half transformed fade to black.

BUT DO NOT WORRY THE STORY CONTINUES.

Back to the journal of 14 year old Desharow. Who joined NATO’s Army in repelling the Merpeople invasion. Yup. Agares went through with his plan. And Desharow, the little genius he is, was let into- not a military academy- but just the military at 14! Wooo! My suspension of disbelief died 80 chapters ago.

He joins a military operation, immediately gets captured by the merpeople. Agares attempts to f*ck him.

These attempts keep happening until Desharow regains his memories from his alternate timeline self. He is still fourteen.

Levjet remakes an appearance, as a young good looking man. And surprise. He’s Desharow’s father, not grandfather.

And another human descendant of Agares shows up to try and steal the merman away, not that it works.

Levjet is punished for going near Desharow, and eventually controls Asura so that he can steal his son away.

But wait, actually he just wants to f*ck his kid and gain control over Atlantis.

This plot lasts for like 6 chapters. Then it’s all over.

Desharow is revealed to be an ancient merperson due to dna manipulation and has dorsal fins allowing him to fly through the air.

He saves Agares, they kiss, he’s havily wounded, they go back to Atlantis/Where merpeople are born for Desharow to heal. Time passes and Desharow wakes up and Agares has dorsals now too. Bigger than Desharow’s of course. 0/5 I hated every second of this arc.

[collapse]

And I dropped the novel here. Right near the start of 115. I cannot continue. Not with everything that happened.

I’m disappointed that this would could have been built so much but was traded in for s*x scenes instead. I think the story has potential. I’m probably not a target audience. But it is... mediocre at best. Better than some other things I’ve read for sure. 3/5 is generous but I did make it to the last chapter before throwing the novel out the door.

I think if you break the novel apart, it’s building up to each s*xual encounter between the couple and besides that, it’s not meant to last.

I wouldn’t take the novel seriously, and maybe it would be better if I had read this casually with no interest in worldbuilding aspects presented to me.

The lore is presented in heavy lore dumps when they occur, so it leaves the feeling of being dense, with no substance to it.

I think if I ever come back to this novel, it’ll be with some alcohol and a friend to just have a loose time with it.

I have so many gripes with this novel, I wish it was for me or I understood the appeal, because frankly it has so much I would have loved. <<less

I sadly had to drop it at chapter 69 because I got frustrated over the lack of communication between MC and ML.

Something specific happens in the few chapters before 69 where I was hoping MC would actually get a little mad at ML. But ML didn't even have to defend himself because MC just ignored the issue by saying "ML was busy." So now I am still mad at ML but MC just put it under the rug so I don't know what to do with my frustration and at... more>> that exact point I lose all interest. I read a few more chapters hoping for the issue to be brought up but nope. Now I'm gonna have to find a webnovel with a good revenge arc to get this energy out 😩

The translation is very good, the smut is decent a little too frequent for my taste but it's ok, the world building is awesome. I actually enjoyed this quite a bit up to that specific point. <<less

Great story, Desharow (the mc) is the definition of book smart but not street smart, hence his s*upid decisions when encountering the ml. I really wish the author delved more into the topic of the ML learning of human values vs mermaid values instead of two chapters at the end of the story. Plus I’m still left wondering if Desharow can ... more>>

now switch back and forth between somewhat human and merman because how else would he get by in Atlantis with two legs and wings???

[collapse]
. As for the romance, I really liked it. Ofc there was r*pe in it but considering that the ML is a literal beast, he wouldn’t understand human values. I loved the devotion that Agares has for Desharow, it really highlights how special spouses are for mermaids. Also, we never got to learn what was the purpose of female mermaids... other than those issues, I liked how the MC warmed up to the ML and began to understand his way of thinking. Would definitely reread! <<less

First of all and as always, thank you so much for translating♡ although there were some typos here and there it was a nice read and the translator always took their time to explain things to confused readers! Even summarize some chapters that some readers may want to skip, wrote a warning for NSFW, questionable scenes, gore or others in several chapters (I felt babied~)

Definitely a plot ridden story, several fluff moments that were oftentimes followed by more crazy plot so it was never boring; although the lore may... more>> be a little heavy for some since it's sci-fi and does have all the things the tags say it has (please DO READ the trigger warnings so that you don't get caught by surprise lol)

The MC isn't the weakling some comments say he is (he IS naive but that's not being dumb, wouldn't we all be the same if we were in his crazy situation?), it's easy to misunderstand his character since a lot of people are too used to overpowered MC (me included) who are always one step ahead of the villains, always scheming the perfect infallible plan. Instead, Desaro is realistic about his decisions, since he can't predict the future and is constantly hit by new information and serious revelations throughout the story, which makes him uneasy. He's serious about the people he cares and often tries to reason with himself in his head, all questionable things some readers may not be happy with (i.e. Desaro's genuine love for Agares despite... all things) end up being brought up by him and addressed by the end of the story which left me pretty satisfied.

This is a 1v1 (
Spoiler

neither MC nor ML had interest in other people, never fell for others nor did the deed with anyone else even though there's an or*y tag lol which is also crazy since Merfolk are kinda described as hypers*xual creatures

[collapse]
), HE, with some angst that made me cry and sometimes made me sweat cold for MC. Maybe it has too many twists and turns so if you want a vanilla, sweet walk through the garden type of novel I would not recommend (remember the HORROR tag ppl, it's there for a reason), but it's definitely an interesting read, 100%.

It only took me a couple of days to read even though I took many breaks, I'm glad I made it to the end and I'll wait for Chrysanthemum Garden's translation to read the extras~ (I MTLed the last chapters). <<less
