In a Mary-Sue novel, the readers all liked the Devil Venerable, the second male lead who devoted himself whole-heartedly to the female lead. However the female lead only loved the male lead who ab*sed her physically and mentally.

Readers: Why doesn’t the female lead like the Devil Venerable?!

Devil Venerable: This Venerable also wants to know. But what I really want to know is why I even like the female lead at all.

In order to understand why the female lead wasn’t attracted to him, the self-conscious Devil Venerable brutally interrogated the entire cast of characters from the novel.

Background characters: I have so many things I want to say but I don’t dare to say it to his face!

After obtaining the book, the Devil Venerable discovered that the book described the world he lived in. This book said that after he sacrificed himself for the female lead, the fourth male lead, his silent and loyal subordinate Yin Hanjiang, blackened and attempted to kill her as a sacrificial offering for his lord.

Devil Venerable Wenren È: Yin Hanjiang, this Venerable wants to know why you wanted to kill the female lead.

Yin Hanjiang was silent.

Wenren È: If you refuse to speak, this Venerable will cut out your tongue and have it with alcohol!

Yin Hanjiang: …

Wenren È: What the hell are you blushing for?!

If there is only one thing I regret about this novel, it's that I hadn't read it sooner. I guess the synopsis didn't hook me that much but I really am glad I ventured past that. It might not be the very best novel out there but it's definitely one of the better ones. It really felt like a breath of fresh air and the characters and plots seemed to differ from a lot of the others novels while being written/translated in an engaging and interesting way. Definitely a satisfying... more>> read, might even go on my reread list.

Mc's translation is really reeeally good.

I think another reviewer also mentioned this before but I will just repeat it. This is not a mind-blowing novel to the point you are unable to think of anything for days.

BUT it is a novel that has a damn good and solid plot with interesting characters. If you are looking for intense romance or steamy scenes then I guess you will have to be disappointed but if you are looking for a story that doesn't require you to lose braincells with likeable characters and unpredictable twists then this is... more>> for you. It's satisfying, unique, and has good storytelling.

The character developments and the thematic transitions while the protagonists find out the meaning of love, duty, honor, and respect amidst some sprinkling of lighthearted comedy kept the novel well balanced.

The world building sometimes felt a bit.. Monotonous to me for example, a character would be doing something and then the author start explaining about certain parts of the world and it feels odd. But otherwise it has a natural nice flow which keeps you hooked to know more. <<less

This book is okay. It is kinda interesting for the first half but only truly gets interesting in the second half so it feels tedious when you start reading it. The romance is not overt and is more like an overarching theme than anything else. Which is to say that not much time is spent describing how they feel or talking about how they feel or even being affectionate.

This is a really chaotic story in a good way, mainly because all the characters are chaotic, unique, and unpredictable in a good way. Because of the synopsis, I thought that this novel would be a comedy without a plot, but I was wrong. Nor does it have a beautiful plot, but it is well written, with a lot of plot twists and interesting characters. Sometimes, when you expect it less, it gets really funny, but sometimes it gets really sad too. What's most impressive is that this novel has... more>> many words of wisdom about life, love, friendship, the importance of being yourself, equality, etc. One moment there is a hilarious scene where side characters cause trouble yet again and you can't stop laughing, and next, unexpectedly, there is a passage about life and equality, which is really enjoyable. This novel shows that the world isn't divided into black and white. Apart from that, the author has unique views about cultivation and its impact on the world and humans. For all those various reasons, the novel is beautiful and special.

As I mentioned, the characters in this novel are really interesting; all of them are amazing, weird, and unique; you can't help but love them. MC is a demonic cultivator, but he is the most upright person I have read about in cultivation novels. I don't even know how to describe ML; he is vicious, loyal, a little bit crazy, and cute (those are MC's words, not mine, but yes, sometimes he really is cute). The side characters are hilarious, and how they interact with each other is priceless. I really regret that I didn't read this novel sooner, but the synopsis was really misleading. I'm glad to see that this novel has a high rating because it deserves it. I would recommend this novel to readers who love this genre. It is a wonderful and unique novel. <<less

I was a little skeptical starting this one but it's definitely shot to the top of my personal favorites. The plot twists and pacing were thoroughly entertaining and I actually wasn't sure how it was going to resolve all the twists, but I loved every moment of it. Definitely reading it again!

I read from mourningcrow because the other site was using comic sans for the titles smh and their English was so much smoother. Also saw another review calling out ontimestory for MTLing.

As for the story itself, maybe I was expecting some kind of masterpiece based on the reviews, it didn't seem all that unique and phenomenal but it's a good book.

It's just a work that bashes the typical mary sue and stallion novels, the people who read them, and introduces other factors into those cliche non-sensical tropes so they make... more>> sense. It's refreshing and entertaining, especially after you're read too many of those bad books, but it's not without flaws. For me, what annoyed me a bit was when in the latter part of the story, the author brushes past the fourth wall and hints what we're reading is yet another version of a story about them; we just live in a different world from the characters in the book and those commenters from the two books. I've always hated that kind of thing, it's such a cheap move imo, the first time I saw it in a book, I thought it was cool, the second time, it became meh, and after that, I started hating, idkkk I guess I would've liked it if this was the first book I read that used this device.

One minor plot hole that never got resolved; how come they couldn't see each other through their eyelids too if they could see each other through walls and regardless of the distance between them?

Aside from these, I did enjoy the story, especially the part where Wenren E thought the readers from Abusive Love make more sense, making a dig at the mindset the stallion novel readers tend to have, and that pirated book part. <<less

I really like this kind of novel that's reasonable. In fact, this story progresses because MC wanted explanation for other character's unreasonable actions in the "original book" he read. Little by little, he understood things. While reading you will also think the same as him and say, "so that's why".

As for MC, I really respect him and would agree that he's indeed venerable.

Spoiler

MC cultivates thru war calamity. I remember Protector Yin explaining Venerable's way (The Path of Slaughter) : "The path of slaughter can be a sword that slaughter's people or it can be a sword that protects the world. Kill to stop killing, stop killing with force, this is the path of Wen Renhe."

Because of his way of cultivation, Wen Renhe join many wars between humans, sealing his cultivation and disguising as a normal soldier and later on becoming a venerated general (PS, he is also a general in his mortal life). Unintentionally, he accumulated the power of faith and respect. This is the reason why he so strong and can even kill fake immortals even though his cultivation is lower.

[collapse]

PS. Came back after finishing. Ugh! Really. Worth. My. Time! And still, this is the most reasonable story I've read so far. I couldn't help but think that author-san is really a scholar. If I'm a cultivator this book will surely help me soar to the nine heaven because of the abundant enligntenment that I gained. <<less

The only thing I regretted is that I didn't read this amazing novel earlier. This has a lot of good reviews but I don't know, maybe I just don't want this to end up as being overrated that's why I kept on delaying. And it's my fault that I'm late on discovering this great novel!

What can I say? I loved almost everything about this. I said almost because the only thing I don't particularly liked about this (aside from being so short lol) is the s*upidity and naivety... more>> of Baili Qingmiao. The first part was full of her brainless self. I admire her character development at the end, though, and it revealed by then why she acted that way.

I loved that every plotholes and illogical events presented at the beginning from the perspective of the books were gradually uncovered by Wenren E (MC). Everything was answered before the novel ends. There's also this war part between the righteous and demonic sect (which was usually shown at every xianxia novels) and there was a clear explanation on why the war was needed every once in a while. Reading that explanation, it didn't occur to me that waging a war like that was significant, especially on the mortal world. That was actually a really good reasoning.

I also freaking adore the relationship between Wenren E and Yin Hanjiang (ML). The sincerity and angst were balanced. It's a slow romance but the transition of their relationship from being master-subordinate to lovers was tender and warm but painful at the same time. As an individual, Wenren E is a demon lord of a demonic sect, ruthless and cold, but he never involved or harmed innocent mortals. He's a really great character. Yin Hanjiang is Wenren E's most loyal subordinate and he actually saw himself as his Venerable's sword, and actually voluntarily acted like one. He was like a puppet who always answers to his Venerable without asking or giving any opinion. And that attitude actually affected his mentality at one point and from their, a lot has happened to him and his relationship with Wenren E. Their development as an individual is amazing, as well as the development of their relationship.

Apart from the MC and ML, my most favorite character is Zhongli Qian. Since I always loved smart characters, he really got my attention. He's actually the smartest and most observant (aside from Shu Yanyan) and you just have to give him few hints in order for him to know the situation. He's a gentleman but he's not overly kind and naive. He's also not hypocrite just like those righteous cultivators. Even Wenren E respected him a lot and Yin Hanjiang even trusted him with the management of the sect. In the sect, he's the most rational and decent person with no underhanded tricks and really has the sense of responsibility. Poor him, because of that, he handled all the stress inside the sect LMAO

I'm telling you, this novel is really worth the read. It deserved to have so many good reviews and ratings. Amazing, from the plot to the characters! It's so great and everything really satisfies me. I highly recommend this novel to literally everyone! Please pick this book up, I'm pretty confident you won't regret spending your time reading this! <<less

This was such an amazing read. I went in not expecting much at all but it left me captivated. I was browsing for a long time trying to find a good danmei novel to read and this one perfectly fitted my taste. Although the novel didn’t focus on the romance for the main CP, each and every lovey-dovey scenes were just so teeth rootingly sweet.
Spoiler

The MC (Wenren È) follow the Path is Slaughter so it took him a while just to even figure out the concept of love. But once he realized his true feeling, he didn’t waste a single second going after the ML (Yin Hanjiang). Speaking of the ML, he is just too precious! The way he always dedicated fully on his Venerable Lord, caring about nothing other than him and how he’s always so terrified to disappoint the MC was so sweet yet heartbreaking. It took the MC some time to talk him out of his insecurities, leave behind their master-servant relationship and instead stand together as equals. The way they both care for each other so much was amazing (TAT)

[collapse]
.

The plot was also incredibly interesting. The author took the typical cliques and morphed them into a intriguing and unique plot line. The side characters were definitely a plus. Everyone had their own personalities and goals and even the villains weren’t brain dead at all. Even if some characters might seem to make illogical and completely s*upid choices, the reasons were always logically explained afterwards. And I just LOVED the subordinates of the Xuanyuan Sect. Each character was more chaotic than the next. Their conversations and trains of thoughts were just so ridiculous I almost died from laughing multiple times.

All in all, 1000/10 novel. Definitely recommend reading.

You don’t know how impressed I am by this novel... It’s not life changing but certainly worth reading.

The plot is fast paced but not rushed which I absolutely loved— 20 chapters in and we already have so many good fight scenes!! As a reader who loves action and danmei, I am absolutely inlove with this one. This novel also helps you build your 3rd world views and the reason why orthodox sects and demonic sects have war from time to time was well explained!

The comedy? The angst? The plot? The... more>> romance? It is all, chef’s kiss*

The MC is a demonic sect leader, the ML is his most trusted subordinate, but even so, there is no power imbalance here, they’re equals and I LOVE IT. I really love this CP ah... Their love was so natural and the way ML’s inner demons were cleared really hit that spot in my heart. Their love is so enviable, everyone wishes to find the love between these two.

The characters are well fleshed, the plot was well made, each intentions and motivations were reasonable, everyone is a protagonist of their own story. The way we get to see different perspectives of two protagonists (abusive romance) and how vast the difference was... was truly impressive.

The lines that Wenren says... him asking whether there’s a book about them.. makes me feel like they truly exist, perhaps if they do, we will never know.

Go read it! You are missing out if you don’t— ignore the negative reviews you see, you’ll love this one for sure!!

I'm so glad I started this novel without any expectations, because I ended up enjoying myself WAY more than I'd ever thought.

Angst, suspense, fluff, crack, this novel is perfectly balanced in all aspects. Even the characterization, which I initially thought was lackluster, ended up becoming truly good. I can tell the author put so much patience and care in this work, and the translator took their time in delivering a high quality, consistent translation. I'm very thankful.

The MC's characterization surprised me most of all because I initially thought it was... more>> the one that had changed the least, the one that was seemingly never going to change, but what I didn't realize is that the novel is set when the character has already changed. After reading his past, he also became a solid character that I throughly empathized with.

The ML started terrifying and pitiful but turning up to be super cute. Hangjiang-ah, my baby, I'm so happy for your character development!

I also loved the unique starting concept this novel has. I've never read a concept like this, it was very refreshing and interesting.

Overall, a great novel I really enjoyed and recommend. <<less

Ah, this novel was a joy to read. Mourningscrow did an excellent job with the translation and it really really works as a comedy with a heart. And when the main couple inevitably gets together, it is absolutely believable and there's no weird power imbalance or sobbing of "but I am not woooorthy".

So if you're in the mood for something light that will make you chuckle at the characters (and sometimes at yourself when it exposes silly romance tropes that you might enjoy), go for this. It delivers. :)

A plot-driven xianxia novel with slow-burn romance

You should read this novel if you enjoy the following.

... more>> Hilarious romance harem/stallion parody

The novel started out as a parody as MC is assigned the task of fixing plot holes of the original novel, in which he is a love interest. It did a great job deconstructing tropes such as Mary Sue and harem setup. In doing so, the book brought up the discussion of love vs obsession/idolization/infatuation.

Since our MC is clueless about romance, hilarity ensues when he attempts to understand love, and "cure" OG! FL of her infatuation. His approach to matchmaking is definitely the most unique out there LOL.

Refreshing, plot-driven story with complex world-building

The novel told a mystery/adventure story spanning different realms. It has heavy Buddhism elements - karma (cause and effect), and reincarnation cycles. A large part of the story focuses on cultivation as characters advance, struggle and reflect on their paths (Dao).

Since the majority of the cast are demonic cultivators, who enjoy bickering, scheming, and competing against each other, it's refreshing. It's hilarious to watch them form alliances while backstabbing each other to overthrow the Demon Lord, only to get crushed, and forced back to submission + scheming again. Not to mention their eagerness to develop or use their demonic arts, it's almost cute.

Unique and well-rounded seme protagonist

The MC is a cold-hearted and rational Demon Lord, who cultivates the Path of Slaughter. His approach to problems is to face them head-on, and employ no-nonsense, result-oriented methods befitting a demonic cultivator ie. Violence and torture.

Despite his path and Demon Lord status, our lead is a compassionate individual. His actions are driven by the desire to protect the common people. It may be best to summarize his philosophy by this quote, "the Dao was dispassionate yet held compassion." The MC philosophical outlook is definitely what makes him fascinating and unique among danmei + xianxia leads.

Unconditional love

While the romance is subtle and slow-burn, it's very heart-warming. Both characters are the type to show affection and dedication through their actions. I wish there are more fluffy moments between them though.

Colorful and well-developed supporting characters

Maybe since both leads are neither cute, I'm very much in love with the side characters, particularly the OG! FL and her (forced) found-family. Their companionship is heart-warming despite differences in moral compasses AND intelligence (lol).

In particular, I adore Zhongli Qian as the brainiac, morally-just character who is forced into babysitting, and running errands by/for our MC (lol). The novel also has excellent female characters, who are ambitious, independent, ruthless yet hella loveable. Promise they will grow on you!

Conclusion

If you enjoy a plot-heavy story with a sprinkle of romance, well-rounded characters, and comedic undertone, definitely check this novel out!

P/S: Recommend reading mourningcrow version. <<less

Ok. I didn't go into this thinking I would like it so much. It dragged a bit around chapter 40 or so for me, and I was worried, but it picked right back up!

This author is just.... Really good at tying seemingly mismatched loose ends together, and then you realize that huh.... The loose ends DID match! This is somehow lighthearted despite the huge amount of mu*der lol. It doesn't fall into the pit that a lot of cultivation novels do where they start to get too stuffy.

I started reading this without really knowing what to expect and, boy, I was not disappointed!

The "change some things to avoid a bad fate" trope was handled in a totally different way than I anticipated and I was so interested that I completed it in no time! The plot's good, it's not heavy and there are a lot of great comedic scenes. At some point I noticed that the romance part quite took its time, but looking at the story as a whole, it fit just right into the picture.

I... more>> wasn't sure what to think about Wenren E because there was something to him and I couldn't put my finger on it but later he turned out to be quite an interesting fellow.

Yin Hanjiang, this poor boi, made a 180 degrees turn. Docile weapon without his own will, mad demonic maniac, calm puppy in love - it was so amazing to see the changes he underwent. I personally think the thing with the mask and his emotions were a great way to depict his oppression of his feelings.

I also loved those last chapters when
Spoiler

Wenren E showed Yin Hanjiang his past in order to tell him that he's also just a human being and not some invincible deity, and that way resolving YHJ's 'I'm not worthy of my Venerable' problem

[collapse]

I have to mention the side characters too. Without them the story wouldn't be the same. This is one of those rare novels where there are enough side characters who have an actual personality. At least those who are more important.

Some things that I hoped for didn't happen (Baili Qingmiao x Que Congxue) and I really wouldn't have complained if there were a bit more romance between the main two, but I'm generally happy with this novel! <<less
