In a Mary-Sue novel, the readers all liked the Devil Venerable, the second male lead who devoted himself whole-heartedly to the female lead. However the female lead only loved the male lead who ab*sed her physically and mentally.

Readers: Why doesn’t the female lead like the Devil Venerable?!

Devil Venerable: This Venerable also wants to know. But what I really want to know is why I even like the female lead at all.

In order to understand why the female lead wasn’t attracted to him, the self-conscious Devil Venerable brutally interrogated the entire cast of characters from the novel.

Background characters: I have so many things I want to say but I don’t dare to say it to his face!

After obtaining the book, the Devil Venerable discovered that the book described the world he lived in. This book said that after he sacrificed himself for the female lead, the fourth male lead, his silent and loyal subordinate Yin Hanjiang, blackened and attempted to kill her as a sacrificial offering for his lord.

Devil Venerable Wenren È: Yin Hanjiang, this Venerable wants to know why you wanted to kill the female lead.

Yin Hanjiang was silent.

Wenren È: If you refuse to speak, this Venerable will cut out your tongue and have it with alcohol!

Yin Hanjiang: …

Wenren È: What the hell are you blushing for?!

Forgot to write the review of this one.

Probably the best novel I could have ever read.

Wen Ren E (MC) is the gong/top of the novel. He's the devil venerable (smth like sect leader nickname). Before he get the "book", he appear as a stoic person (because he can't trust no one). After receiving the book that reveal the information of their current world, he now know that there's 1 person that's willing to die for him and take revenge for him (ML). From then on he took care of ML.

Yin... more>> Hanjiang (ML) is the shou/bottom of the story. He's extremely loyal toward MC to the point in the book he's willing to torture the FL and avenge his lord (and die for MC). He has unrequited love for MC but he hid it to the point even he himself didn't know that he like MC.

Relationship between MC and ML:

Spoiler

Their relationship is slow but interesting. MC once rescued ML from a pile of corpse when he become the general in human world to train himself. Since then ML see MC as his savior and is willing to be MC's sword (weapon). MC got the book because he's the rank 1 popular supporting role male lead from the book.

In the novel book (i forgot the name but it's something about sadomasochism?) MC get, ML and him are 2 of the supporting male leads that always help the FL (Baili Qingmiao). The og FL is a love fool for the main OG ML, still forgive him despite being a s*umbag. In the book, MC died to protect FL and ask ML to protect FL. At first it's shown that ML indeed protect her and even reach higher popularity than MC. But later it's shown that ML actually is the villain that always use ghost mask to torture FL (like a pe*verted behavior). ML sworn that he will light a lamp for MC by using FL.

Ever since knowing about this, MC attitude toward ML change. He help ML to breakthrough, bring ML everywhere. At the fight when MC got injured, he entrust himself to ML (know what will happen from the book). ML sacrifice [something] so that MC can be healed (his meridian is injured or smth, I forgot). Which caused ML to be injured, when MC wake up he start to heal ML and even turn himself into blood demon (blood demon is a taboo). Since then their relationship get better.

ML bring MC to a place where the statue of general Wen Ren Wu (MC) is enshrined. All this time, ML always disguised himself to pay respect to the statue. MC never know this side of ML. When they get back to the sect, MC told everyone that from now on ML words/order will be on the same status of importance as him.

I forgot the detail of the rest but here:

MC fall into the sea of blood in the hand of that sht s*um of ML I forgot the name which caused ML to go rampage. Since then ML took over the position as sect leader and have a heart demon in the form of MCs. When MC finally get out of the sea of blood, he saw ML drinking alcohol while hugging his robe. MC come to him but ML act cold toward him (he thought that's his heart demon). [Infamous scene] in MC's bedroom, they argue because of the rob (just ML arguing). MC already know ML like him, he told ML that he's still alive.

(Skip many scene)

MC disguise himself as Baili Qingmiao (og FL), he discovered yet a new side of ML (ML hate Baili so he acted a bit rough towards her) and think he's cute.

Ending: MC, ML, and FL succeed in getting rid of the s*um OG ML. Both MC and ML then ask for a book from MC's subordinate (dual cultivation book), they went to retreat for a long time.

[collapse]

Note: I read this novel 2/3 years ago so some names and scenes are forgotten

The side characters here are written good, especially MC's subordinates and FL's growth.

Best MC's subordinate is probably the girl with purple gauze, good at seduction, and is funny (forgot the name). There's also another girl who's an elder in the sect, she cultivate in ghost path which caused her body to look like a skeleton. Later because of FL she turn back into human body (forgot the name). There's also the white hair guy (another supporting male lead in the original book), he originally isn't from the devil sect but later he got kidnapped recruited by MC and hit it off with the purple gauze girl, everyday his hair start to fall out because of the chaos in the devil sect (forgot the name).

I like the FL. At first I really dislike her but later on reading her growth really feel nice.

Spoiler

She's a disaster innate deity or something. The reason MC in the book and the current one help her is because of karmic relationship (she's like the mother?). MC try his best to make her see the s*um og ML true face so that she can enter the chaos path and awaken her divinity.

Baili Qingmiao is also taken in by one of MC's subordinate (the ghost cultivator elder girl one) and make her as disciple. FL saw many things along with her. At the ending she awakened her power (that s*um of ML is dead already if I remember) and went to travel (?).

[collapse]

Overall everything from the plot, MC, ML, the side characters, even the villain (the s*um og ML and the other "righteous" sect) are all well written by the author.

Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know took me by storm. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. Initially, I was reading it like it was BL, and it is! But like what someone in the reviews said, it felt more like it was rich in story with hints of BL in it.

I won’t lie, I didn’t read the tag and was patiently waiting for some extras with spice LOL—but I think the story is just fine without it. I initially read for some BL and whatever cute ships would... more>> come with it, but instead, I found myself reading more for the plot than the romance after a certain point. I would read it for hours on hours solely to find out what would happen next.

  • Wenren E is an amazing character and is someone I enjoyed reading about. I felt that he had been well thought-out and created.
    • Somewhat contrary to the summary given about the book, he is a lot more chill. It felt he had some sort of kind soul mixed in, unlike how typical characters of evil sects are portrayed. He really isn’t evil, he is simply a man and a cultivator with hella power. The more you read it, the more you see that he is quite a lenient and loving man to the male lead. It’s cute and it really does make him more enjoyable to read about.
    • The way he leads his sect is also admirable. He doesn’t expect loyalty from his subordinates, just competence. He seems to make plans and takes into account how his subordinates are and touching on that, I like that the author didn’t make him some genius, or ambitious. Instead, he’s just competent and thoughtful in his actions. He felt realistic.
I already mentioned it, but the story really is rich. The side characters were well written and didn’t feel like they were just background characters. They had a lot of involvement and contributed to the story’s development consistently. It didn’t feel like they were just conveniently there to progress the story. The plot never got boring and it felt like there was a consistent purpose behind the story.

I will admit, there weren’t very many times Yin Hanjiang was mentioned at the beginning of the story, but eventually, you begin to see just how he is. His personality begins to show and you see that, in a way, he is an endearing person. You get to see him grow and become his own person while facing his problems.

It’s not the type of story to make me sit and contemplate how I feel incomplete without the book LOL, but it definitely is one that I will reread. I can’t express just how well-written this book is and I loved every second of it. <<less

This is my first novel that I feel truly annoyed reading most of the time. I almost give up reading. But I think it gets better at chapter 50 till the end.

Plot was unorganized. Author just dumps in information, explaination like it just suddenly thought of. Generally the plot and story is quite interesting but it needs further and better development. It feels like the author is just writing whatever comes to mind as they like it without really planning earlier.

Writing style was awful too. Kind of boring explaination style.

I... more>> do like the characters though. They are refreshing. But they could be better with better writing.

Sorry, but I don’t understand why others give 5 stars. 😅 <<less

I really liked this one. I appreciate that a part of the romance storyline was about Wenren E recognizing what he had before him (Yin Hanjiang's constant loyalty and love), and Yin Hanjiang maturing emotionally and moving past his blind idealization and adulation/adoration of Wenren E. So, growth from both sides, which is rare in romance, and it is something I like a lot. I am also SO relieved that the female characters are NOT written hatefully.

The main difference between this novel and other novels is that even though the ML came to know that he was just a cannon fodder in a novel, he didn’t become hostile to the FL immediately.

He analyzed the situation logically.

I am really glad that the FL wasn’t ruined at the end of the story. ^_^

Pros :

It's a refreshing read. The MC and ML characters are okay. A kinda cute couple.

I definitely like the side characters, they are soo funny. They are from the demon sect afterall, kinda weird if they're not eccentric.

... more>> I don't know why but when BaiLiQingMiao first appeared, I thought the author will pull out the 's*um man backyard is on fire' aka FL ended up w another girl of s*um ML's harem. So that was weird.

Cons :

The pacing at the end.. Ugh. It feels rushed. There isn't a lot of lovey dovey moments like I thought it would.

It's not a bad read while also being not a great one either. But I still finished this in one day. So it's a good one to past the time. <<less

The Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know is a story that thoroughly and enjoyably deconstructs the tropes of cheesy male-centered power fantasies and abusive female-centered romance novels to rationalize and humanize the world and characters within both stories. It's an interesting novel that reminds me a little bit of the Akutagawa short story Rashoumon, since a large part of the story is about how perspective and framing can alter someone's experiences.

For example, a romance from a female character's POV where the ML constantly cheats on her might seem unhealthy and... more>> abusive to the readers. Meanwhile, that same story from the ML's perspective might be a wholly typical harem plot with an annoying, overly jealous and immature wife. Whose perspective is correct? While the novel does take a stance, it also openly acknowledges that its own stance hurts others, and that everyone will naturally have different understandings of the world. It's a novel that is fully willing to embrace the grey space between "good and evil." The characters we root for are terrible people, but so are the villains. Who's in the right? Naturally, we say our protagonists are, but objectively, everyone sucks and a lot of people lose. It's a refreshingly nuanced take.

The novel writes a compelling main character: Wenren E, whose perspective we just so happen to take. And it's an interesting perspective! Wenren E, as the leader of the demonic sect, has a really intriguing worldview that is at once selfless and selfish, thoughtful but a little oblivious, proud but also very humble. While normally this would create a weird amalgamation of overly convenient character traits, his traits make a lot of sense given his upbringing and harmonize very well with his position in the world. He has a lot of understanding of the way the world works in conjunction with Heaven and the Dao, and I really appreciate how much time went into fleshing out the work's philosophy along with the plot and characters. I also really like how it mixes elements of transmigration and regression without being fully transmigration or regression, allowing both for Wenren E to keep his personality and for continued suspense, since we only ever really get one side of the story. The only gripe I have with him is that he's a little too smart at times, and it's a little alienating.

Personally though, I found the ML, Yin Hanjiang, a bit more interesting than Wenren E. He's the cold but feral kind of ML who would happily burn the world if that meant his lover could be happy. Think Luo Binghe but much more respectful of his partner's boundaries, haha. I really liked how much time went into softening up Yin Hanjiang and humanizing him. I will acknowledge that the romance between Wenren E and Yin Hanjiang is a bit hard to get into due to how subtle and a little understated it is (Wenren E is pretty oblivious), but the tender moments are terribly sweet and very easy to cherish. It's the kind of romance that feels very one-sided until the other party finally realizes their feelings, but the reciprocation feels natural and genuine because there's a lot of hints towards it in the beginning. The pacing can put some people off though, which is fair! If you really hate the "very slow to make way for the plot until the third act where everything blows up in your face" kind of romance, you might not like this one very much.

The rest of the characters are great. The side characters are absolutely hysterical and super well fleshed out. All of them have their own quirks and though most of their ambitions are very similar (power, what else?) their tactics, relationships, and worldviews are more than unique enough to lend them all a personal charm. Something I also really liked is the prevalence of women in the side cast. Between Shu Yanyan, Baili Qingmao, and Qiu Congxue, the webnovel really loves its ladies, which is pretty rare in a BL. (I was actually hoping it'd turn into a GL partway through, hahaha. In my heart, it's a GL!) Of course, the side male characters are great too. Su Huai is wonderfully straightforward, and Zhongli Qian, please take a break...!

Regarding what I disliked, the pacing of this novel is a bit too fast for my liking. Everyone is an immortal cultivator, so it's a little forgivable, but plot beats I'd consider important might only take a chapter to complete, when I feel like it should dwell on the details a little more. This is mostly because the length of the novel is so short. The plot is straightforward but still rather winding, but the chapter count is only 80 + 2, and even though the chapters are long, that's still too few for such a long plot! I only wish there was a little more time to breathe, haha.

The characters are well-written, but I also feel like the antagonist party feels immensely dumb at times. I do appreciate that it's not a "the righteous sect is all secretly evil" kind of twist, but He Wenzhao's party suffers at times from an IQ that makes me raise my eyebrow. And while I did praise the webnovel for its nuanced take on morality, it would have been much more strengthened if the protagonist's party consisted of slightly better people. Seriously, why are they all s*umbags? Sure, it feels great to tear them all a new one, but not a single character is remotely forgivable...? The nuance moreso comes from the fact that the main character's party is also all kind of cruel, but at least they're funny about it.

Overall though, Devil Venerable is still a super solid read. It's entertaining and thoughtful, and my gripes are ultimately pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. The writing is also surprisingly great: my kudos to the translator, mourningcrow! (Don't read the other translation.) Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a good xianxia danmei, and doubly so for those readers who also like baihe. <<less

One of the greatest things I’ve read so far. MC is funny (depending on humor and most of it is situational) and manipulative but he keeps a clear head. It’s a bit of a detective novel as MC follows the plot line before the actual story takes place to make improvements. I’m just happy this wasn’t one of those ‘kill the original protagonist’ and drive them into insanity. It was more of a uncover their true face and make them fall into a trap of their own hubris. So good... more>> novel <<less

This one's a masterpiece. Literally what an amazing protagonist, so smart, talented, amazing. I had this on my reading list for over a year and it's a good thing I did, because I wouldn't have been able to make it through some of the other stories I've read when comparing them. Just the novel to read when you want to recover brain cells. Highly highly recommend.

So, this was not what I was expecting (in a very good way).

I was expecting a comedy with a lot of fluff and a tiny dash of plot and Xian Xia.

But this was plot and heavy Xian Xia with a dash of fluff and comedy.

... more>> MC (you can imagine him as a Gong, a shou, or a switch. it's not really clear, and I love that) is worthy of his venerable title, unlike all the other demon venerables in every other novel.

He is, ready to die in a heart ot heart honest fight, since he knows the his spiritual energy will help other life prosper after his death. He actually, genuinely cares about the life of innocents, and controls the demon sect so that they can't harm mortals.

He's even merciful enough to not harm the soul of his enemies (since he thinks that a soul always have the potential to be better in another life)

But he's not some white moonlight. He treats every life equally. The life of an ant is equal to the life of a man. They are both life.

This novel has a very refreshing take on a cultivation world, engaging fight seens, actually well written female characters and 'good' and 'bad' people in both demonic and orthodox sects.

Alos both good and bad poly relationships. (Original Male lead has a harem but he's the only one who's okay with it, his wifes all hated it. The left protector on the other hand clearly cares about consent and only takes in men that are okay with the arrangement, even if she probably thinks of them as boy-toys)

Of course there are some things I didn't like about it but it's a 5 star overall

Spoiler

I loved Baili, and her acr was beautiful. Seeing her slowly emerge from her cocoon and carve out the bad influences in her life was an amazing journey.

But, I get that she is the primordial goddess and cultivates the path of indifference but her shift in attitude after receiving the divine blood was a bit.. too quick?

We been seeing her slowly change throughout the whole story and I loved that. That's why it felt like all the things that made her herself were stripped away in a single chapter.

I still love her and there were still hints of her original personality but she felt like a totally different person.

But maybe that's just me...

BEST NOVEL! Masterpiece!!

This novel is such a breath of fresh air! It makes fun of all the cliche tropes in stallion novels. All characters have real growth and development. They each have their own goals and distinctive personalities.

Yes, Happy Ending! Very satisfying! With all the mysteries explained. No unresolved issues.

... more>> This is one of the rare danmei that has STRONG female characters who play significant roles. All the female characters in it are powerful and no they don’t die out or only there for romance.

The love of the main cp is the healthiest, most supportive relationship you’ve ever read!! WRE and YHJ respect each other thoroughly, they COMMUNICATE openly, and their journey is to understand each other deeply even though they’ve already known each other very well (life goals, personality, even mood).

I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer so here’s my counter points if you’re reading and hesitating.

Spoiler

YHJ never suffered Stockholm Syndrome. No character in this novel suffered it! YHJ has never ever been held against his will. WRE saved him and brought him back to a private sect so the child can grow up. WRE left him to go to war, not exactly abandoning but just busy! The novel will explain later why.

I’m just going to point this out and say it’s WONDERFUL that WRE left YHJ to grow up alone for 10 years because there is ZERO chance for g*ooming or anything else fishy or creepy going on.

I hope you have stronger reading comprehension (than previous reviewer) and get that not only WRE but basically there are always reasons behind every character’s feelings and actions from the Abusive Romance script.

[collapse]

This novel sets up GOLD standard for how a healthy, strong romantic relationship should be. Only green flags! WRE and YHJ always support each other in everything. Due to straightforward communication, the drama and the angst do not get dragged out! No filler chapter!

Wish I can give this novel unlimited stars!! Highly recommended!! You won’t regret it! <<less

First of all, I usually don't read novels with a gong MC. But I am glad that I gave a chance to this story. It is rare of me to give 5 stars. But this story was fun to read.

Like in the description the master of demonic sect finds a dog blood romance novel written by a female author. He soon realizes that it is not some tr*shy romance book but about their worlds future. It is hilarious when people look at the book title and misunderstand his taste.

After reading... more>> it he is confused, why would he fall in love with someone and even sacrifice himself for her. He is confused about many plotholes and "s*upid" things on the book. Still decides to help the protagonist of this book because he knows her true identity after reading the book. Also he wants to learn more about his world, about characters in the book.

The only problem is the ML of this novel (novel that he found) so he tries many ways to separate him from the heroine. Some of his methods are good but some hilarious because he has no knowledge about love.

Later he finds a second book which was written by a male author and it is a harem story with strong male protagonist. Here ML of the first book is the protagonist and MC of the first book is just one of his many wives.

Devil Venerable is not some cold hearted, calculative and malicious villian. He is more like a monk? He is really a good person who wants to protect people. ML, his guard is bit obsessive, but it is something that he has to solve in the story. He is not that beautiful and feminine shou. He is on the same level as MC. Strong, loyal and overprotective. So this story doesn't give that much gong shou dynamic like other typical danmei novels. They feel more like a verse?

Side characters are all well fleshed out, none is truly evil or good. They are just humans with feeling, jealousy and ambitions. I really loved the devil sect members characters. They're so fun and cute, life is never boring in devil sect. Female characters are very likable unlike some danmeis. First I thought I wouldn't like the female protagonist of the novel, but she wasn't just some braindeath girl.

I specially liked the ending. I am giving it full 5 stars because of that ending. It was well written, and then explained everything nicely. No plothole I would say. That book is not there just for the sake of this story. Nicely done! <<less

I see why this novel has such high ratings now.

I was always dubious about the content since the summary didn't appeal to me, but after years of seeing people reccomend this and how it didn't drop from the high ranks, I decided to pick it up and I feel s*upid for avoiding this the whole time.

Its okay. Plot heavy. Gong-centered. Painfully slow romance with a somewhat abrupt reciprocation from MC that feels forced.

I've actually abstained from heavy plot novels, I didn't know this was one of them. I also didn't know that it was gong centered. Though I did get a hunch halfway that it was gong centered.

For me, I dont like novels with the leading person as the main character. It just doesn't feel right to me (probably because I dont consume shounen, seinen kinda trope) so I lost interest the moment I learned... more>> MC was the gong (I was 77 chapters in but I persevered hahaha) .

From the start I didn't really like it, I couldnt get myself invested in it that much because it was heavy plot and the appearance of ML is small. To others this is good, which it actually is but for me not really. Couldn't handle it too much.

I like Zhongli Qian's serious bullsh*t though, it made me smile. <<less

Finally finished reading the book, didn't stop reading the Mtl until the end, and despite the grammar bonking my head I admit this book is one of the best books I've read in a while and one of the very few endings I actually loved! I'm not kidding the ending is just perfect and it kinda makes me sad that such a good book was over, although I'll read the new translated chapters it still makes me a little sad, and it's a good change to have actual decent female... more>> characters in a BL book, it amazes me that there is so much story with everyone.

Aaaaalthough the ML (Yin Hanjiang) annoyed me a little with his obsessive nature, I didn't hate him at all, infact I understood all his feelings

Over all this book is amazing, you wont regret reading this, it is slow paced (kinda) but it's all about the plot and character development, trust me y'all this book is dope! <<less

This novel is essentially a deconstruction of the typical romance/harem xianxia novels. The story pokes fun at all the hackneyed tropes and instead gives an alternate and often hilarious reason for what happened in the ‘original novel.’ The devil venerable and the entire demonic sect, with their lack of common sense, turns the OG story into a comedy of errors.

I love the cast of characters in this novel. The dedicated righthand man archetype has been delectably cooked to perfection. The romance and the main cp’s dedication to each other is... more>> great, but my fav part would be all the side characters, especially the party of three that only have 3 functioning eyes between them, and the only person with brain cells is the blind one. 5 stars, if I could, I'd give this 10, 000/5.

This one just felt so freaking poetic; it makes you really think about what destiny and fate really are. I had to take a break from reading for a couple of days cause I needed time to process what I'd just read and that's so rare for me. Just a precursor though, MC is very OP, almost undefeatable, but somehow we still get moments where we're unsure if he'll make it, and that made me like this even more. MCs character... more>> is so very in line with my personal tastes for MCs and the author does an amazing job of developing his story in a way that feels organic. The story itself is very focused on cultivation, with the romantic progression being an underlying part of the main story which gradually builds up and that is beautiful. It reads more like a shounen male protagonist story with a male love interest rather than a purely romance story, which is something I'd been looking for a long time and am pleased to have found. The side characters are so fleshed out and powerful. I especially liked how the female characters are also strong in their own right and have personalities that aren't copy-pastas of each other; they also play a significant role in the plots. I'm so in love with them! I'm not gonna say that every single plot point made sense/was amazing, but it was pretty close, and this will forever be one of my all-time faves. <<less

OMG, WTF?!! How come I hadn't written a review?!!!! I'm totally flabbergasted rn. From the time I've read this novel, it has always been in my top favourite ones and I always thought that I must have left a review but now I'm finding out that I hadn't left a review on one of the best cultivation novels ever and I'm just devastated.

The only explanation for this is, I must have read this before I made a NU account. Therefore, I didn't review. Cause brooooooo, when I say I love... more>> love love this novel! When I was reading it, I hadn't known wat a true gem I had found out.

This novel is just so amazing with such smart characters and such an interesting plot, it's really rare finding these kinda novels which r new and not same old stuff.

It's a pity I can't write wat I had felt when I reached the ending but the only thing that remains in mind is that this was a spectacular danmei and I would like to recommend this to everyone to read! You won't regret reading this gem, so do give it a try!
