In a Mary-Sue novel, the readers all liked the Devil Venerable, the second male lead who devoted himself whole-heartedly to the female lead. However the female lead only loved the male lead who ab*sed her physically and mentally.

Readers: Why doesn’t the female lead like the Devil Venerable?!

Devil Venerable: This Venerable also wants to know. But what I really want to know is why I even like the female lead at all.

In order to understand why the female lead wasn’t attracted to him, the self-conscious Devil Venerable brutally interrogated the entire cast of characters from the novel.

Background characters: I have so many things I want to say but I don’t dare to say it to his face!

After obtaining the book, the Devil Venerable discovered that the book described the world he lived in. This book said that after he sacrificed himself for the female lead, the fourth male lead, his silent and loyal subordinate Yin Hanjiang, blackened and attempted to kill her as a sacrificial offering for his lord.

Devil Venerable Wenren È: Yin Hanjiang, this Venerable wants to know why you wanted to kill the female lead.

Yin Hanjiang was silent.

Wenren È: If you refuse to speak, this Venerable will cut out your tongue and have it with alcohol!

Yin Hanjiang: …

Wenren È: What the hell are you blushing for?!

4.59 Stars

Date Read: 15/3/2025

Personal Enjoyment: 4.4/5

... more>> Quite fun. I didn’t have much of an urge to read if I stopped for the night but when I am reading, it’s so enjoyable. Quite funny haha. The characters are so serious or legitimately brainless that it comes up in hilarious situations. But it still becomes heart wrenching. And the slow unveiling of the mysteries and inner intentions of the various characters always made it so there is something new and curious to learn each chapter.

Plot: 4.7/5

Very good. It’s surprisingly thought out. Lots of mysteries to discover and the addition of the original reviewers/comments made me feel so seen hahaha. The story is a slow learning by the characters of what love is and why it makes people do what they do, regardless of rational thought. Using a wonderful plot device of the original book.

Writing/Translation: 4.5/5

The translation I read is from mourningcrow. Quite good. No errors that I noticed. Though a few bits were a bit hard to understand but I think that was all the xianxia jargon and concepts lol.

Pacing: 4.5/5

Good pacing, I never felt that it was slow. I did feel that the romance acceptance rate was a little fast. Not the unveiling, but the characters accepting that the next step. But compared to the vast majority of light novels, this is actually a slow burn lol.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4.7/5

Actually quite detailed and makes sense. I love the multiverse concept and how the various cultivation realms are connected. I also love how this is all a huge component of the driving force of the story. It’s not just flavour text but part of what drives the story forward.

Characters: 4.8/5

Just good. All of them. Everyone.

Romance: 4.5/5

The romance is quite good. I love the 2 MC and ML. And the MC’s exploration of love.

If you're in a reading slump this will feel like a refreshing cup of tea. There's the inherent comedy of trying to herd (demonic) cats, different views and outcomes on love vs lust, unexpected friendships and finding your own way thanks to the support of those who care for you.

And that's without even getting into the relationship between WRE and YHJ, which is hard to accurately summarise. Just trust in the author and the HE tag and enjoy their emotional journey, you won't regret it!

The translator did a fantastic job... more>> overall, even explaining puns and interesting tidbits, so though they might have to take it down someday, do give thanks to mourningcrow! <<less

The novel is a nice take which pokes fun at a lot of the tropes commonly seen in a lot of old web novels, which adds much more depth to the characters, particularly the side characters which are rather endearing to me by the end of the novel.

Much of the focus of the novel is not romance focused, and is more plot driven, but it incorporates the budding relationship between the two main leads pretty well, making the transition from their original relationship to romance feel natural in the latter... more>> part of the story. The other reviewers would have said it better, so I'll just stop here

Overall quite engaging, might re-read again someday. <<less

    • Good Male AND Really well written Female side characters (It's really rare to have well written female side characters in a novel where the main couple is BL)
    • Good dynamic and development of romance (not rushed, weird, or forced)
    • Satisfying epilogue
    • No dragged out scenes or arcs, the novel is the perfect size, not unnecessarily long or abruptly short in any places
    • No dubcon or noncon
Overall a 10/10 novel!! It's so good, not once did I have to get over an ick to keep reading and not once did I feel dissatisfied with what happens to the characters.

I especially love a certain dynamic among the side characters:

Spoiler

Two of the side characters (Shu Yanyan and Zhongli Qian) who have romantic feelings for each other did not end up together because of differences in what they want in a relationship! They both admire and hold each other in their hearts but know that ultimately they are not right for one another. I feel like that is such an important and refreshing dynamic to acknowledge, and it's even more refreshing when it's not the main couple being used for that dynamic in the story.

One of the best transmigration Danmei novel I have read. Transmigration/Isekai genre is never my thing. I only came to like it if it has a lesson attached with it and not only comedy romance. The supporting characters of this story are surprisingly fleshed out.

I love loyal bodyguard trope so its easy for me to love the romance here. Yin Hanjiang can be a yandere but he fits right beside the honorable yet ruthless Wenren E. The main couple might be antiheroes from the exterior but I appreciate how morally... more>> gray they are. They don't really bully the weak humans and only fight with fellow strong cultivators like them. Wenren E believe good and evil need to coexist for world's balance. Too much evil is bad and too much good is also bad. They can be ruthless though hence why they are demonic cultivators for a reason lol

Even if the premise sounds like a joke. Aroace sect leader of demonic cultivators found a book that says he's in love with a girl so he start to learn romance with it. The message of the story is definitely why its such a great story. It explored Media Literacy. In the story, we get to see different type of fans from different books with specific demographics. It tells you to expand your horizon and try different genres. Don't only use one book to learn about romance and the said book is Abusive Romance lol Its okay to read it and enjoy it because after all, true art can comfort and disturb minds but don't use it as facts without questioning it. You need to be involved with people and talk with them just like the cute relationship between Wenren E and Baili Qingmiao where they talk about not revolving oneself in only romance. Some book just exist to challenge you to think criticially and shouldn't be a guide in your everyday life. It don't mean these books deserve to be erased in this world but more like to expand your understanding about the world you're in. Get it?
Spoiler

So I really like that in the ending, they just burned the books and live happily together as immortals. Symbolizing them moving on and not relying to romance books anymore.

[collapse]

I think the only thing I don't like about the romance is
Spoiler

Wenren E entering YHJ's dream/consciousness to persuade YHJ for their romance. I prefer my romance when they confront each other to fix things and actually communicate instead of relying to fantasy element but its understandable because YHJ is harming himself so yeah. Can't be helped. This is just my preference though.

I was surprised to realize I never left a review for this book, especially since I read it about a year ago or so. My memories of the story were a bit hazy.

I did recall feeling pretty satisfied with the story, roughly 95% to 97%, which is saying something, given how picky I can be about my reads. I didn’t remember anything that really bugged me, and even if I couldn’t recall the specifics about the main couple, I knew I’d recommend it. So, I decided to give it another... more>> go while I was at it.

As I reread, memories started flooding back, and I found myself pleasantly surprised by the story all over again. Even though some things came back to me, I still wanted to finish it to confidently give it the rating it deserved, especially now that I'm more familiar with the genre.

The characters are really well done, each with their own unique vibe that makes their development throughout the plot engaging and enjoyable to read about. There are some intriguing twists that keep the story interesting, and themes of personal change, friendship, and self-acceptance really stand out. Plus, the translation is excellent; it made the read even more enjoyable!

The pacing is mostly good, but I felt there could’ve been a bit more depth in certain areas. I loved the diverse characters, too; they added a lot of richness to the story, and it was cool to see aspects of the cultivation world that you don’t often encounter.

To be honest, I’d rate this novel more like a 4.7, but I might be biased since I loved the side characters a lot (they were more memorable to me than the main characters). They really brought the story to life. So, a rating anywhere from 4 to 4.5 stars makes sense to me, depending on how critical someone is and how familiar they are with this type of danmei.

I genuinely want people to give this book a shot. Go in with an open mind and try not to overthink it; it’s way more fun to just experience it! That said, it’s not without its flaws, as I mentioned earlier. It feels like the author had a ton of ideas they were excited about but didn't have enough space to explore everything, which made some scenes feel rushed and certain parts of the story feel empty.

Overall, it’s a captivating read, but I can’t help but feel it could’ve been even more powerful with a bit more room to breathe. That element of rushed storytelling here and there left me a little disappointed, as some intriguing subplots and ideas didn’t get the attention they deserved. Because of that, it falls a bit lower on my favorites list.

That said, it’s still a good journey to embark on. <<less

It's so beautiful Q^Q you can't hide it,

But seriously >.<

I mean: an actual Power Couple, well-written and layered characters, healty relationship where they become equals, and their badassness... on top of that, the plotline ^W^/

And somewhere along the way the whole sect gives to that with their chaotic energies and it's just... and combined with the mystical vibe AWW CX

It's too good

Also, it has kind of a Heaven Officil's Blessing-like vibe in it's beauty, with a hint of Mo Dao Zu Shi... hihi *giggles like an addict*

It was okay! An entertaining story, likable characters, interesting and fun plot. Having said that, though, it did not meet my expectations. I was honestly close to dropping it in the middle because the romance was too secondary and slow for my liking. The world-building felt poorly planned sometimes, like the author established rules and limits but then the MC somehow easily pushed through and achieved the unachievable. Ascending in cultivation levels is supposed to be really hard but all characters progressed like it was nothing? I know it's supposed... more>> to make fun of common tropes in web novels but I think there's a way to write satire without pulling a deus ex machina and making your own MCs seem irrevocably indestructible (SVSSS is a good example of this, in my opinion). I still finished it because it was an easy read and I got really hooked on the romance near the end!

BQM becoming an independent career woman made me really happy too,

I would probably say this book is more of a 4.5 for me, but I decided to go with a 4 rather than a 5 because as some people said it’s not necessarily a “mind blowing” novel. However, it’s very funny, the characters are great, and I’m always a fan of genre satire, so I really liked it!

If you're someone like me wandering through hundreds of crappy cultivation dameis looking for a hit of dopamine, definitely read this! It's been hard chasing the high that some of the more famous ones I read first gave, with most just blurring together at this point. This one was such a pleasant surprise! It creatively subverts a lot of common cultivation/fantasy ideas which was refreshing. It also keeps a logical, well-paced plot while avoiding frustrating tropes like misunderstanding. The characters are delightful and funny, and they even do yandere well.... more>> I'll definitely be reading more from this author. Really good translation too!

Edit: I'm rereading and forgot how funny these idiots are! Constantly cracking up. I also forgot how much I liked how the relationship developed before the romance does, and the fact that a lot of the cultivation aspects are explained logically instead of just hand-wavey. Still 5 stars for me. <<less

One of the best danmei I have ever read. I was invested in every single characters, ML and MC are very 3D. The author does an incredible job in delivering the story, there wasn’t a single paragraph that I skipped because I was that invested. The chemistry between the main leads is amazing. Although it’s slow romance, the plot is not. So it kept me captivated to read, and in no time I had binged read the whole thing in 2 days.

Both sweet and hilarious. I love the MC to death, and the ML is also pretty amazing. The entire demonic sect is amazing, tbh, and I love how everything that seemed nonsensical brainrot at first ended up having a logical explanation.

Only cultivation novel I have given 5 stars to. I’ve read this a long time ago and I came back to re-read it. Still amazing.

Absolute masterpiece. Although the romance only begins towards the end of the book, the plot was so good, most of you will probably not even mind it, I assure you. The MC in this case is actually the gong, so I was pleasantly surprised on that change as most MCs are shous. The book is also so funny I’m not even joking. Each an every character... more>> has so much depth to it and most (apart from a couple, but I won’t spoil) are super likable, including the original book’s female protagonist, she’s so dumb but in a funny way yk.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book if you’re looking so a light romance with a hella of a good plot. (AND NO PLOT HOLES HURRAY) <<less

I've read this so long again yet from the depths of my memory, I had a good time. There was a solid plot that was followed throughout the story, and the characters had good development; the translation was one of the best I've read in a long, long, long time. It definitely also has a uncommon couple dynamic that I feel most novels of this kind don't have. Please do give it a read ^^

Definitely not a romance focused novel and I live for it. It’s very unique and nice power/skills building and it doesn’t feel like info-dumping. The two main protagonists tho, ohh boy this two... I swear. This book is the best description for slow burn and action-pron. I LOVE IT! It doesn’t overly feed you with romance sub-plots and just gives you action and highly intellectual fight scenes, back to back to back! I love it very much!

I had a hard time to finish this danmei. It was a good and fun ride though. Yin Hanjiang, what a loyal man you were towards Wenren E. The slow burn romance captured my heart in a second the moment MC realized his true feeling. And even all the side charcaters (mostly Xuanyuan Sect) gonna makes me missing them after this. The cunningness, petty arguements and peak comedy that they were showing lol. Still a good novel and kudos to the translators!

HONESTLY, this was a good ass read. I loved this novel and reading it was not a mistake at all. But tbh I wished I read it earlier T-T. When reading it for the first time last year I wasn't really interested because I didn't understand the story depth that much by the summary and so when I first read the first chapter I was pretty confused. Thankfully I found the novel again and after seeing people's review on it I finally understand it bit more and so I read... more>> it. Honestly the story is such mwah chef kiss bruhh 😩✨ Tbh I think this was my first time reading a slow burn romance ngl and it was pretty AWESOME. The plot was hella intriguing and kept me reading and me interested in it. Honestly the romance between MC and ML was the spice of the story. If there wasn't romance in this, the story would still be pretty good but its more better with the romance being the spice of it all. Honestly MC and ML relationship is so complicated and is to tied up into multiple of knots. Just when I thought they finally understood each other, there was still more into defining each other's personalities and emotions wirh one another. It didn't have angst and tragedy like 2ha and YuWu but the plot I would say can almost be the same level as it but only almost, not same. After thinking it back the romance wasn't like any other romance I seen. Probably because its my first time reading a slow burn one I didn't felt that much heart ache for the love of MC and ML and all ngl but their dedication towards each others makes me think they are more like platonic soulmate. But the romance still pretty badass to define. They went through life and death together so its understandable for them to bond and be in love with each other. The side characters were pretty well written as well. Each has their own important tole to the plit and is greatly appreciated and used well in the novel. My favorite is definitely Zhongli Qian. He's soo fking smart and wise bruhh wished he was real man. He's a really well written character and I love his development during the story and intelligences. Him being the love counselor for MC and ML is pretty funny to me lol even if it was such a short time.
Spoiler

i also I am sooo glad that the author finally, finally gave Baili Qingmiao who was originally the FL in the book of the world MC and ML was living; finally gave her a redemption.. FINALLY BRUHH I was waiting for her character development. I kept hoping that the author didn't abandon her and let her have character development, forget about the tr*sh original ML and have a chance to redeem herself from her s*upidity.

[collapse]
I also like Protector Qiu's straightforwardness ngl. Pretty refreshing and made me have a couple of laughs lol. Tbh I kidna hoped for more to see ML more true side ngl. But I dis get to see it that much since it was nearing the end of the story. Yk like I kidna wished that ML realized his true self and desires which the author could've been more depth about since most if the time ML sees MC as someone superior as a god and didn't belive he was Worthy in having his live and standing by his side. He only realize when its kinda nearing the end of the story. But I like how the author didn't make the MC OP and invincible in the beginning ngl. I like how the author gives out how even if MC is the strongest in his sect, he still is a human and has weakness and is bound to have deadly injuries occuring. And MC was able to grow stronger as well which is pretty good. Tbh I really got confused on the time skip but I was not expecting like 10 or 30 years skip in the story 💀. Cause like in my mind I was like: after that much years pass aren't the characters gonna grow old and have a old appearance 😭so I was hella confused because I had a slow mind. But after finishing reading it and thinking about it some more I finally understand that they didn't have an old appearance because they are cultivators and so they their appearance would slowly grow to be old and will still have a young appearance because of their powers of being a cultivator. Honestly idk why this thought didn't appear while reading it lol but appeared after. Idk why I also didn't question how MC is 300 years old but aint old and have a good looking appearance lmaoo 😭. Should've realized from the start 🗿 <<less
