Initially, I was all pro Ji Wu Jiu, the spoiled emperor who never had to work to get laid be on a conquest of experiencing the taste of first love. The banter between Ye Zhen Zhen and him was cute. I found the whole 'walnut grab' at night cute yet a bit unsettling. What finally brought me here to rant about the book is chapter 41. I can try to understand Ji Wu Jiu for his unforgivable actions but I honestly don't want to. He saw her clear discomfort with... more>> all that intimacy but still proceeded. I want to rage quit this book because of this one-sided development. Never was a fan of one-sided love. I think I will continue reading, though. <<less

This novel is pretty decent, there are some illogical events and constant drama-scheming but it's overall a good read. I also like the fact that it's relatively short. You won't feel like you wasted your time even if you end up disliking what happens. I think 4.2-4.3 would be the perfect score for this novel, not bad but also not mind blowing.

Now about the plot and things I disliked. Male lead is kinda s*upid, he has placed so many women around him from different factions that are constantly creating trouble... more>> for him. There's your usual jealous women fighting over which one of them, the MC likes the most. Another semi-important character his old mother which is pretty much an annoying hag. Romance between Female and Male lead is done quite well and never really cringed with their interactions. He's also only commited to her after a certain point. As I said previously he can't easily punish severely his other women so there's trouble lingering around at all times which is kinda whatever. I think what kinda ruins the story is the perfect timing they have with each other when it comes to escaping from sticky situations and the last 15-20 chapters which were unnecessary. I'd prefer a slightly less adventurous ending and perhaps 2-3 more chapters similar to the last one. <<less

Romantically, it is at best a potential romance. For political reasons, the main character becomes Empress, the main wife (of many), at 17, while the emperor is young, energetic and with limited common sense (apparently, quite intelligent). They do not like each other, but slowly, they start seeing each other better sides. Rather than romance, there is a lot of intrigue and occasional mu*der. Since "police" cannot enter the Inner Palace that is formally ruled by the Empress and men have no access (with one exception, of course), she is... more>> responsible for solving the mu*ders, or her unloving husband will add "negative points" to her evaluation. He is getting ready to replace her, and he has the bureaucrats to convince her, which in ancient China is no joke at all (unless you want to be case as "the wicked last emperor of his dynasty"). However, as the Empress stays aloof from the intrigues and solves the mysteries, it will be harder to find someone better to play her role (bureaucratic, not as bed mate) .

That does not sound overly exciting, but there is a lot of humor. <<less

The prime minister’s grand daughter and the emperor are forced into a marriage that neither want. Both are pampered and head-strong, with low expectations for each other and their marriage. Starting on the wrong foot, they go out of their way to make things difficult for each other, before developing feelings of mutual respect and affection.

The story’s narrative isn’t the best but there are enough cute and amusing moments to sustain it and to make it an enjoyable read. Although I wasn’t too impressed with how the author decided to... more>> showcase the female lead’s intellect, giving her access to historical cheats... and the image of her dancing around on the roof shooting guns... Or the horrible way she ab*sed Da Hong Pao tea (as milk tea T.T)... that’s like someone adding coke to your best bottle of wine and comparing it to goon OTL. However the biggest issue I had with the story was

Spoiler

the dub-con scenes where the male lead took advantage of the female lead in her sleep then later forced himself on her. While technically spousal r*pe wasn’t an issue back then, it still left a bad taste, even if you factor in the fact that the male lead was repentant, that the female lead didn’t seem too scarred and the whole clumsy first love thing. At least it was the turning point of their relationship where the male lead started to care more about the female lead’s feelings rather than just what he wanted.

This was also an issue in her other series (The Rice Pot Next Door) where the female lead didn’t charge the second male lead for attempted r*pe since the roofie didn’t work... And a point was automatically deducted for how both these series just shrugged it off, otherwise they’d sit comfortably at 4/5. The other point was for the fate of my tragic tea ;n; It hurts even though it's fictional.

[collapse]

The series is not bad, though there were a few uncomfortable moments and glaring weaknesses, however it left a favourable impression overall, while the characters and their relationship did improve over time.

Additional Note: for some reason I feel like Wallace Huo is the perfect person to portray the male lead (petty but just hot enough to pull it off and have people tolerate it). <<less

I felt a bit like I wasted my time reading this. I had nothing else to occupy my time so I chose to finish it but it was honestly kind of boring. I don't know if its the translation but the story felt kind of really immaturely written. The FL is super annoying and I found myself feeling bad for the ML even though he's like the tyrant emporer.

I generally really like such harem stories but this one was just not written well and its not very engaging and the... more>> side quests just made me roll my eyes and I found myself skipping chapters because of how its written. <<less

If there is one comedy themed costume drama I would like to watch, it would be an adaptation of this book. To be honest, out of the so many comedy themed costume dramas that currently exist, most of what I have watched have bad scripting and bad plot lines.

With just the right mix of politics, romance, imperial family struggles, and a whopping scoop of humour, this has to be one of my favourite stories. And the humour here is done so well, I was questioning how did the author do... more>> it, because when I try to do humour it just turns out lame. I laughed till my tummy hurt, and probably some of my neighbours heard it in the middle of the night. Bless their souls, I am not a ghost.

Ye Zhen Zhen is full of mischief, and while it does tick me off sometimes that she does just the most absolutely reckless things ever, it fits well into the humorous theme of this story. I love her, and I love Ji Wu Jiu, poor guy was sacrificing himself for the country. They were an amazing unconventional pair that worked out, cause honestly I would have not been able to put up with either of them in real life.

Overall, happy about this whole story's left a huge great impression, left satisfied, nothing to complain about. Actually it was my second time reading this because I forgot I had read this before. <<less

Amazing palace romance between a smart Empress and an even smarter Emperor. FL was a smart stubborn woman. She is inexperienced and thus made a few mistakes here and there, but overall, she deals well with the inner palace women and all their shenanigans. Emperor ML was powerful and initially stubborn as well, but he wasn't unwilling to admit his own mistakes. Although he didn't like FL at first, he was not mean to her beyond reason, and even respected her intelligence.

Unfortunately, there was a r*pe scene, which is not... more>> surprising considering it's a historical palace novel, but if that puts you off, here's your warning.

Other than that, ML and FL actually got the time to slowly get to know each other, and their mistrust was slowly ebbed away by time, patience, and some luck. FL is a but of a free spirit and not vengeful, which is new for a palace novel. ML is as typical, a jealous man, but as an emperor, well, in some ways that is his "rights". But he was very supportive of FL's interest. FL, too, understood the hardships of being an emperor even back when she did not like him. That mutual respect was what built the relationship later on and I felt that it was really sweet.

The main plot is based around many inner palace schemes and even some external ones, as well as a little bit of warfare (not explicitly explained). Overall, very interesting, sweet, possessive and barely angsty novel. The plot wasn't overly common and was interesting to read, and the characters were likeable as well. <<less

This is actually the second time reading I'm reading this and I still can't find the heart to stop reading it.

Spoiler

The interaction between the couple is so adorable especially how Ji Wu Jiu always caters to Zhen Zhen. So much SMUT (not complaining though hehe).

The side story is interesting as well though it's sad that the author didn't mention the life of their 3 more kids, especially their daughter, which I think would be so adorably irresistible.

This is so refreshing!!!

The humor wins everything! I laughed so much since the beginning, and the romance is sooo fluffy~ love it!

Right now I'm tired of the super perfect FL & ML, tired of reincarnator & transmigator, and this is none of the above.

... more>> Well, FL & ML are still kind of OP, but the author made so much fun out of them--to the point their OPness is balanced out.

Perfect, perfect, perfect. Not too heavy of a story, not too heavy schemes, there are loopholes ofcourse (even harry potter has plenty of them) but it's not detrimental to the laugh factor.

I have forgotten the last time a romance genre could give me such fulfilment: mystery, romance, humor. Will bookmark and re read!! <<less

It was great in the beginning, funny and interesting. But the relationship between the two takes really long to take off and the plot is weak. The empress’s attitude towards her husband, the emperor, was annoying, immature and quite unacceptable. She even puked from having to have s*x with him? Overreacting much. I stopped reading after that chapter. It shouldn’t drag on that much.

Mismatched royal pair that somehow ended up loving each other. I love how ML cleaned his hougong for her as some novel would just leave it be lol.

ML is prideful but for her, he lowers himself just to please her. MC is clever but dense, dim-witted in the field of love, good thing she realized her feelings for him. There were some parts that were quite frustrating but they resolved it easily which is why I like it v much.

Novel is funny as well! Which is a plus! You dont... more>> see that often <3. Basically just romance w little scheming which is juts my cup of tea. <<less

Indeed, a nice novel to read. I like how the story developed and how the characters matured. Not overly dramatic and not overly sensual. A subtle balance of humour, romance and intrigue. Too bad there was only 2 side stories tho. Nevertheless, a good ending.

Loved this bickering couple.

The ML is almost realistically portrayed. He’s the emperor so of course he’s cunning, ruthless etc. But he falls for the FL and becomes the sweetest husband. FL is smart but naive at the same time. This couple loves looking down on others a lot. Lol

The side characters are also decently fleshed out.

A fun read.

Really a fun read. Although I am not fan of harem life however I can understand the ML's circumstance, he was born to be an emperor and naturally women just keeps coming in his palace and of course, he is also a man as well as bestowing favor to those women (especially the women related to officials) was also some kind of duty in a way but I am glad he eventually learns the right way to love because of our FL.

I love both of their characters. FL is definitely... more>> someone that just attracts you and can't help but love, she might be unruly at times but that is also her charm. She is straightforward, honest, kind, free-sprited, unconstrained, full of warmth, courageous and clever ('very clever' as said by her lol). She is simply full of sunshine that you can't help to be attracted to her light. ML on the other hand is your typical ML that we love, he is handsome, very intelligent and cunning, although at first he was very apathetic to other and even our FL, it was understandble to me, he is the emperor and he is very self-aware of it, he knows that people don't simply interact with him without intention or something they want from him so him being heartless would be something unavoidable. I am the same as FL, I also sort of admire him, he's a good emperor too.

To be honest I came here for the smut but unexpectedly I what I got was something with a decent plot with the snu snu here & there. What an unexpected treasure find. :D <<less

Even though I had enjoyed the first half of the novel, I'm sooooo very disappointed on how the author put this kind of situation that really destroyed the characterization of the MC:

Spoiler

That time when Zhen Zhen runs out from the palace and was causing problems behind her without thinking her position as an empress. *Sigh* Also she didn't get punished or get scolded amidst her childish act, do you know why? Because she found out that by only touching the d*ck of the emperor would really stop his anger real quick. *Face palm* I can't find the clever/cunning empress but a little girl who just wants her way no matter what.

[collapse]

Earlier I really liked her because she was portrayed by the author as a clever woman but I really can't make myself to read any further. <<less

I like the female lead. It's quite difficult to like the male lead at first with all his concubines of course. But when he started to recognized his feeling towards female lead, he really loyal to her. One of the things that I appreciate about our male lead is he respect his wife and never wronged her. If I have a complaint it will be the ending. I feel like the ending a bit rush.

This is a pure romance novel and is a lighthearted, easy read.

Depite being set in ancient China and specifically the inner place. There are no deep or complicated political schemes, revenge, traps, and generally no killing or torturing.

Schemes in the harem are simple and are just plot devices to make things happen. Enemies are enemies in name only and are easily crushed. In short, all that we would expect from a novel set in inner palace are not present in this novel. The novel focuses soley on the Emperor and... more>> Empress' interactions and relationship development.

However because of the nature of such a novel with no actual depth, not much can said for character development. While having some it is not a substantial amount. The same goes for the plot. Events, laughs, and hurdles appear but they don't hold much substantial significance either.

Furthermore, the characters are not complex and 'smart' either. They are relatively simple and frustrating. Especially, the female lead (but what else did we honestly expect? Its always the FLs, I say natural selection is outright poor in novels).

The female lead is a prideful, spoiled, naive, and a little bit narcissistic. She is also smart and clever; but at the same time dumb and outright idiotic. And I dont mean it in the IQ and EQ sense; although it does somewhat hold true in that context as well.

The ML on the other hand starts off alright albeit extremely petty. And then after falling in love essentially turns into a brianless idiot.

I find that both characters are difficult to like.

Spoiler

Around chapter 50, the FL wanted to 'join' the war. The ML didnt let her, and so she escapes the palace. Fakes an identity as an general and essentially frolicks around army camps and plays around the town like a nouveau riche (and somehow didnt think it was easy to catch her).

So yes, is she downright s*upid? Yup.

The country is at war, you go frolick around the frontlines and run amok in all male army camps (poorly hiding the fact she was female too). The FL knows some martial arts and weapon usage. But are you honestly kidding me? The fact that she thought she could participate in the frontlines without telling anyone (neverminding that she is the empress) or that she could potentially lose her life.

What's more frustrating is that the ML never punished her or reprimanded her afterwards. Just continued to dote... and then she escaped again, actually participated in the frontlines and gets captured by the enemy. And when she gets saved? More doting.

[collapse]

Honestly, after the ML realizes he is in love with the FL. There's not much else that goes on. Just fluff, more fluff, infuriating moments (because love lets you get away with everything) and more fluff. I would say once you hit chap 50-60 theres nothing to read. It's plain fluff all the way to the end.

To sum up:

Did I enjoy this novel? Debateable

Did I like this novel? Decent read in first half only

Was there humor? A little bit

Was it actually funny? Not really

Is it good enough to reccomand? No

I would give this a 2.5 stars if I could. <<less

To be true, I don't like to read this type of novel or you could say, I'm avoid it. Firstly, maybe because I don't like when there's sooooo many concubine because it so depressing when I read it. But somehow, I still read it as I just when to change my taste.I could say that this novel really worth it.

The FL is a straightforward girl as she always said what she when and at first, they always bickering. But somehow from early chapter, I could see that the emperor (maybe)... more>> have attract to her as he always like to tease her. There's not many of misunderstanding in this novel as well and their misunderstanding is not drag to long.I could say that I really love how they communicate. They always solve their fight straight away and not drag it to long. This novel is full of funny scene and also as they got to know their feeling (it begin when the ML knows his feeling, FL is a dense?), there's many of their dual-cultivation and nose-bleeding.. <<less
