Lu Heyang x Xu Ze

Xu Ze had thought hard about it, and the only thing he and Lu Heyang had in common was that they were both alphas with the highest pheromone level in the Union Preparatory School.

Apart from that, the two of them had no resemblance or relation whatsoever.

Very much liked this novel from the get go. The MC has had it very rough since his childhood and is pretty much detached from everything around him except when it comes to the ML, then he becomes a little fool. They have such a great relationship. The ML is very supportive as he knows the MC has his way of doing things and just quietly helps him. I’m glad they got their happy ending after so many years.

Well... this one’s kinda hard for me to rate because I loved the characters and their relationship but kinda wasn’t really sold on the plot.

The whole book is full of cliched tropes (not necessarily all bad) and although it starts strong with the buildup of Xu Ze and Lu Heyang’s relationship and actually manages to pull you in, it completely lost its depth and believability for me the moment drama started happening... usually I’m all here for some good angst but a lot of things regarding the execution of the... more>> main conflict in this book just felt either unrealistic or forcefully put together with a lack of foreshadowing. This kind of left the book with quite a few plot holes and I simply had to look past those for the sake of enjoying the couple’s relationship, which is probably the only thing about this book I don’t have many qualms about. Although, I have to admit that the way author ‘coincidentally’ kept bringing Xu Ze and Lu Heyang together in the later parts of the book felt kinda heavy handed... but I’ll take what I get.

On the account of characters, I actually really enjoyed Xu Ze and Lu Heyang’s dynamic and both of them grew on me both as individuals and as a couple. It was equal parts heartwarming and painful seeing them grow and navigate their complicated lives and I’m glad they got their happy ending. I also enjoyed the side characters, although they haven’t been that flashed out and maybe deserved a few more lines... oh well, guess I’ll have to check out author’s other novel to get more.

To sum it all up, this novel was alright, dare I say enjoyable (although more in a guilty pleasure type of way than anything else) and would’ve probably been better if I managed to toss away critical thinking while reading... unfortunately, it was hard to ignore some of the gaping plot holes and certain questionable little things that surfaced here and there.

Rated this 3 stars on NU but would probably rate it closer to 3.5 stars if I could. Even though I was not blown away by the plot, it was still somewhat balanced out by the characters for me. <<less

A very well written novel. Translation is also very good. The Characters, the plot and the pacing.

My main issue lies with the MC's character. I don't know... he just doesn't feel human. How can someone be so detached and indifferent all the time? It's like he has no emotions whatsoever. I can't help but wonder if it's because he witnessed his mother's su*cide and has been through one hardship after another since childhood—like seriously, the guy never catches a break🥲. But the author never really clarifies this or gives us... more>> any proper insight into why he's like that. (I love him the most though)

He does seem to show some emotion when he's with the ML, but even then, it's frustrating. What really gets to me is how he never knows how to say no to the ML. That constant "Yes, sir" attitude drives me up the wall. I just wish he would, for once, harden his heart, step back, and give himself a little peace. Let his heart rest, you know?

The schemes, plot, and villains feel way more intense in this novel. It's technically set in the same universe as the other one, but the villains are way more entangled in the main characters' lives this time.

The whole Amnesia thing was stressing me out. It was driving me crazy.

And why does this novel doesn't have any smuts but the other one has. 😭

But despite all this, I enjoyed reading this. It makes me feel things, even when I want to scream at the characters. It's frustrating in the best way. <<less

How good is this novel? Well, I re-read it 3 times within 6 months... and I'm a slow reader so every read took me a week. It's actually a short read-- I'm just busy with school. Anyways, I found that no matter how many times I read it, it never gets old. The yearning, the heartache, the feelings that didn't't have anywhere to go for years due to unexpected circumstances, they all hit me right in the gut. I really love how this author writes, their portrayal of the character's... more>> relationships is so painfully beautiful. The leads like in many other works are rich, yes, but they're not portrayed as invincible, and you can see how their strongest backgrounds are not only their biggest support, but also also chains that hold them back, trapping them.

The line that I think best described this novel and it's MC is:

Spoiler

"Lu Heyang had forgotten him for the second time, but it didn't matter as long as he (Xu zhe) remembered."

It's actually very sad-- because later on, the ML (Lu Heyang) actually does admit that if he had never met Xu Zhe again, then he would never have tried to regain his past memories, and his life would have just continued on as always. Meanwhile, Xu Zhe never forgot him, and throughout all those years, his heart never stopped yearning.

6/5 stars. Slightly cheating as I perceive this as part of the Shared Universe story ''Imprisoned in Eternal Night".

I'm enjoying this story so much. Quite sophisticated plot.

I get some people don't comprehend MC's passive melancholic nature and trusting naivety towards their significant other. But I do. Those who know, know.

... more>> I am so glad for the second half of the story. The first was just leaving me on tenterhooks as I knew their youth wouldn't end well.

I'm so glad MC got a better adulthood even without ML.

This does have some of the most beautiful wordcraft.

Spoiler

"If I hadn't met you when I returned home last year, I probably would have gone on living the rest of my life with eighteen years missing from my memory. Over time, maybe I wouldn't have cared anymore, wouldn't have felt the pain."

"But every time I saw you, I'd feel both curiosity and regret—knowing you were someone special, but not being able to remember why. I kept realizing what I'd lose if I truly gave up those memories... "

Side-character He Wei is absolutely superb oblivious provoker.

On re-read, start at c72 to skip school-life.

Please do read the Shared Universe story "Imprisoned in Eternal Night". It is more conventional wife-chasing plot, and it is done well. <<less
