From infancy to maturity, what Ye Zhou dislikes the most was “two”.

The reasons were: he was ranked second at home, he had been forever ranked second at school, no matter how diligently he worked and tried, he couldn’t shake off that “second” curse. What was more exasperating was that, at University, not only was he ranked second, but even his appearance that he was proud of had to be classified as second best!

Why can’t I obtain the first place!

The eternal second will rise!

Then, Ye Zhou, after his vigorous efforts finally rises and the result was… the first became his boyfriend.

This is the story of a man who has been forced to be “second” and how he became the first, most popular.

Waaah!!! 😍😍😍 After long time I read a whole story in one go!! Why?

Because it was so fun reading, I laughed out by my self looking at my phone so many times it wouldn't be a wonder is my sis gave me 'she is finally gone mad reading too much' look😑

Not just fun the flow of story character build, distribution of emotions, rational and some irrational yet funny (like the Shang Ye religion) and really enjoyed it whole. It my cup of tea with my favorite cookies along.

You shouldn't miss... more>> out other characters apart from the main characters, there friends family everyone plays role in the development and completion of the story it made more approachable.

I really want to recommend it to as many as I can but reading my review am not sure if it can make someone want to read but if it did it makes me super happy 😄

Thanks for such an wonderful story author 😍😍 (I don't know what else I can say, thank you and love ya)

And thank you so much for the translator for even when medium changed I felt every single bit of the story through your work thanks for the hard work 😍😍

PS: I rarely write reviews so sorry if it too bland and formal, but can't help I just love the story!!! <<less

I finished this in barely four hours, which shows how addicting this book is.

I can't say it's very outstanding, or very deep plot-wise, but it's quite a cute novel, with a light romance and the occasional chicken soup. The romance isn't really in-depth, and the plot at most, is "better than average". However, there's no shortage of dog food, the moments they spend together are quite fluffy, and it's quite nice to see two people with a large yearning for family love come together and build a new family.

A bonus... more>> is no IQ lowering after getting together, no impulsive decisions like "throwing away the gift he gave me because I confessed to him but he rejected me but in reality he likes me back"or really unnecessary drama. The whole parent ordeal is and dealing with coming out is quite realistic, I suppose. Makes me wish people could understand other people and be more tolerant.

Of course, not every one would like this novel, but I'd recommend it anyway. Sorry for the bad English and have a nice day. <<less

Honestly the start was really difficult to get through because I felt the situation was more humiliating than funny. After all if you tell your friends something and they don't believe you, at a certain point it stops being funny and becomes ugly. MC has a lot more patience with his friends than I do, because there were multiple times that I was so furious that I almost stopped reading. His friends basically thought he was a liar till the end. I don't care what the school thought because you... more>> can't control rumours, but the friend behaviour was a bit condescending and intrusive. Although the story does tell that the MC has a problem of being too lax with his friends, I still wish there was a moment of realization that you shouldn't take advantage of someone's good will.

It is a short-ish story though and I know not everyone would feel this way. After all this kind of 'misunderstanding' trope is very popular so if you're like me just keep reading because overall the story is okay.

i AM glad though that all misunderstandings were cleared between MC and ML. The relationship build up was good and the characters were well-fleshed out, on both their good and bad points so they felt realistic. I liked the implicit understanding and the sense of connection between them. They make a good couple. <<less

The characterization has depth. The seemingly cold ML is just careful about his actions. The "naïve" MC is actually reasonable in dealing with the people around him. The group of friends who are considered meddlesome are supportive idiots who has their own interpretations. Those who accepted them but not their sexuality and those who accepted them fully. Those who do not care but gave offerings just to pass their exams.

Their relationship started with a misunderstanding and strengthened into friendship before they became lovers. They actually TALK about their problem. The... more>> ML give the MC some space to think. He's not arrogant or oppressive, the usual gong we see in Chinese light novels. The MC face the ML with his real feelings.

No unnecessary drama!

Sweet, lovely read and a beautiful touch of slice of life. <<less

(The rating is my genuine score, I never up- or down- score based on others' scores - everyone's perspective is valid, so it's OK if the overall score doesn't match my personal evaluation.)

I have issues with the start of this story, but it was worth bearing with. The rest of it is exactly what I wish more translated RomCom novels (and BL in particular) were like.

Cons:

So, the first 10-15 chapters feature everyone around the MC misunderstanding him, misinterpreting everything he says according to their own ideas and deciding... more>> everything for him. It's supposed to be humourous and I think many people enjoy this kind of humour. For me, stories like this are nothing more than frustrating, irritating, painful and infuriating. I really hate it when the highlight of the story is supposed to be that nothing goes right for the MC and nobody takes what he says seriously. It's the humour of "Love Stops Rumours", which I had to drop, but others loved. If you are not like me and enjoy that kind of thing, then you will find the beginning really funny instead of excruciating.

Pros:

However, if you are like me, don't be put off by the beginning. Once I waded through that, this completely became the kind of BL RomCom I was hoping for.

The MC and ML's relationship develops naturally and comfortably in an everyday way. It's written with a gentle, humourous, lighthearted but sensible tone. There are no overdramatic problems, but instead issues arise and are dealt with promptly and reasonably (which is like a breath of fresh air).

The writing of this story is fairly simple, easy-to-read and never boring, but I felt secure and relaxed and enjoyed the ride. This is a story where you enjoy the humourous tone and thoughtfulness and in the end feel like there's a sincere and satisfying relationship built.

I LOVE that this isn't the typical OP/overbearing ML x innocent and boyish/girlish MC I find in too many Chinese RomComs, especially the currently translated danmei/BL. The ML does initially appear to fit the stereotype of the too-smart, too-rich, too-handsome, cold-to-everyone-else Chinese ML, but the story instead shows him as a very normal human (well, a very handsome, very intelligent, normal human) and is able to show more of a balance between the main couple - which I've felt starved for recently.

A small nod for the other characters, too. It's not a deep or serious story, but it shows not only lively fellow students (although they are initially infuriating), but also the positives and negatives of the main couple's family members, which in turn makes the main couple have slightly more depth.

The translation is very good and the story is highly readable and enjoyable. I was really glad I'd persisted through the excruciating beginning. <<less

I can see where the readers who couldn't get into this danmei are coming from.

But honestly I feel like this was a very good read and to an extent, even realistic. I did get frustrated at MC's friends but I have seen worst from irl guy friends so I wasn't exactly bothered by this. MC and ML both had their shortcomings and it was sweet how they both came to acknowledge them and care for each other.

It's worth to give it a try. And definitely deserves no less than... more>> 3 stars. <<less

This story is very cute and very much a comedy. For me, it was perfect but it's definitely not for everyone. A lot of people might find the misunderstandings frustrating, and at one point so did I but it didn't dampen my experience too much, and I still enjoyed the novel quite a lot.

I liked the humour and the lack of drama in the way of the main characters' relationship. Some people might find that tedious but it gave me space to relax and go with the flow. I also... more>> really admire Ye Zhou's character, being able to stand up even after being knocked down. His sense of pride is very much like mine, and some of his words really resonated with me.

I rated it five stars because I liked it a lot but you don't have to. If you enjoy sweet, funny slice-of-lifey comedies with a hint of misunderstandings, you can give this one a go. <<less

Truly a hidden gem.. where is the shang ye alter for us to worship ah...

This is one of the very few novels wherein the reviews truly do no justice to it, for those who’re wondering whether you should read it or not, this review is solely written for you.

PLOT:

Let’s get this clear, I assume most people here are doing uni or have finished uni, so I don’t see where the confusion is, perhaps it’s a cultural/regional thing but nothing regarding the behavior of xiao zhou’s friends overstepped any... more>> boundaries, this kind of thing happens in our school all the time, the best way to put it is- harmony. All of us students know each other, playing jokes and having fun is really okay, showing a classmates photo gallery around for a laugh? Who hasn’t done it? I really don’t know how schools are outside Asia, but really, no one goes too far. It’s also clear that xiao zhou himself was just exasperated, not resentful. Why are you feeling resentful for him? And Shang jin teasing him? Oh, I know I would’ve done the same in his position, we’re all mature students, this isn’t middle school. Xiao zhou really has the cutest friends, this switching dorm hahah, really experienced. If xiao zhou wasn’t a popular student and just a student who took pictures secretly, no one would really care, no one would make a fuss over something they know isn’t appropriate. Moreover, it’s only in the first 20~ ish chapters wherein you’d feel embarrassed or laugh at xiao zhou, but he’s really too cute.

CHARACTERS:

  • Ye Zhou is a very very well written character, someone who’s stubborn, doesn’t like to be taken care of and has that slight inferiority complex- but more than anything, he builds friendships and connections because he gains that feeling of amounting to something, he’s a very beautifully written character and throughout the book, he shines and he makes others (Shang jin) shine too. He’s very mature but just a little s*upid, and it’s not uncanny considering how hard it is to break out of certain thought processes or viewpoints unless someone directly splashes cold water on you.
  • Shang Jin is extremely relatable to me, we’re pretty much two peas of the same pod, might as well call myself his alter. His behaviors, his way of approaching things, you can see deep down, despite that nonchalant and carefree facade, there is a deep regard for the future and meticulous planning, he’s shrewd.
  • The side characters are actually very sweet, none of them want to make Ye Zhou feel uncomfortable and stop when they see he’s upset, yeah sure, from our omniscient point of view it may look annoying but that just means your immersion is lacking.
ROMANCE:

Beautiful. What I love about this book is how we’re given two imperfect characters who impart on their own experiences and learnings in life to grow together. For Shang Jin, from the beginning we can see he hates nosy people but doesn’t mind Ye Zhou, this isn’t because he ‘liked’ him but simply because of what his dislike about it really alludes to, and it’s really well written. I won’t go into too much detail but since this is personal interpretation anyway, Shang Jin dislikes those who assume things and have preconceived notions on something, which is why rumors don’t affect him and what people say are nonsense, because he really can’t bother looking down. Truth be said, he really is on a pedestal, but the reasoning and the details linking all these factors together is written extremely well. Ye Zhou on the other hand, due to his inferiority complex, feels rather wronged, but he knows that he doesn’t really have any rights to feel this way, which shows that he’s already mature in how he’s developed, a rather rare feature in danmei zeros hahaha. When these two people with similar but different viewpoints exchange gazes, learn and assimilate, it’s truly beautiful. A wonderful romance.

Overall, a beautiful book I highly recommend. These two are really really wonderful. I want to also mention their family conflicts and our older brother but it’s not too relevant to this review.

Personal : 3.5/5 overall: 5/5 <<less

This novel isn't something different than sth classic and silly, but loved the way it was written by author. It's cute, fluffy and sweet. It story will be started with a misunderstanding, which will grow with the time, not sth new, but you cannot do anything except loving it!

Comedy and second-hand embarrassment of novel is great, I like his silly roommates and friends, so like always we have a sunshine MC and moon like ML.

READING THIS NOVEL WILL BRINGS YOU ENJOYMENT AND SWEETNESS :D

Read almost 3/4 of it.

Immature writing. Slow pacing. Nothing happens.

I can say that I was intrigued at first, it seemed like a novel I would enjoy, so I did my best to be patient for the story & its characters. But the novel kept it's mediocrity until the last chapter I read.

Story ended up going in circles. MC became annoying again. AND, yet, nothing remarkable/of worth happened. I get it's a slice of life novel that it's supposed to be filled with foolish misunderstandings and a s*upid amount of fluff.... more>> Despite that, I think the author could have done more with the setting, plot and characters. It was right there, but alas, failure.

Slice of life shouldn't mean a brain dead read OR boring.

I did read the other comments and I do understand why they liked it. And I am not here to debate anyone. I do want to say that if the summary and tags appeal to you, go ahead and give it a try if you know yourself an enjoyer of mindless romcom fluff. <<less

Cute, simple story with many misunderstandings.

MC is not typical native shou who depends everything on ML. He is a cool and characteristic guy.

ML is not typical cool president guy. He is genius but lazy guy who doesn't even bother to clean up his own desk.

Although their friendship starts with a misunderstanding, their feelings are mutal.

What I like about MC

Spoiler

When they were drinking and MC complaining about his second eternal place. ML said he will give him first place and MC was mad because he is not so pitful that he need to rely on other people's charity to get 1st place. He will take 1st place by his own efforts. The next day, they have a cold war.

Best part about this novel.

Spoiler

"Ye Zhou.” Shang Jin suddenly called his name.

“Yeah?”

“You’re not the eternal second.” Shang Jin pointed to his own heart and said, “Here, you will always be the first.”

It was quite nice relationship in daily school routine. All of their friends really supported and ship thim as a couple. There were some trouble, but never big enough to make big quarrel.

Bit draggy in each episode, I might say. Till 44 chaps, already passed the half of novel, these two still maintain their status quo as friend, eventho there were some sparks, ambiguous moments, but it was tiny, so not enough evidence to ignite the romance.

Anw, still good for light reading, but gonna camp in other novel first

A cute little slice of life story ONLY if you can tolerate friends that are meddlesome. At first it infuriates and frustrates me when the MC's friends decided to take into their hands the matter concerning MC's "affair". Believe me when I say I am already on the verge on giving up on this novel because of that ლಠ益ಠ) ლ, so I understand where people are coming from when they decided to drop this.

BUT because these kind of friends are the very reason how the ML and MC... more>> becomes closer and were able to know each other better. So please be more patient with the MC's friends becuase it'll be worth it in the end. (ღ˘⌣˘) ♥ ℒ♡ⓥℯ That said, this is a short easy to read novel, it's cute but nothing special. 4.5/5 for me. <<less

If you're looking for a light read, fluff, non-angst, this is the right one for you. The development between MC and ML is really good, in my opinion. So natural, and very believable.

MC and ML are well-established characters. Since they're both intelligent, things move quite well, leading to little or no misunderstandings at all which makes their development quite smooth.

They're both very likeable in my opinion. MC is a good person but he's also strong-willed and cannot be pushed around. ML is one of the most respectable MLs I've ever... more>> read.

Most of the struggle they have is more personal and in relation to their families--
Spoiler

including coming out in the latter parts

[collapse]
-- which I think the author executed the matter well.

Storytelling, plot is pretty solid. A bit too slow on the first 30 chapters though, but it really set a good foundation for the relationship of the two which made me fine with it. Not much twists and turns, plot is pretty much straightforward and linear moving, so others might be bored but since I am in the mood for such light stories, this is really great.

Oh, though IDK if it's the author's writing style or how it was translated (which I don't think is the case since the translator seems to be really good), but some parts are a bit confusing, misnamings, etc., but it's just a few instances and won't affect your reading experience that much.

Spoiler

More on just my personal non-plot related thoughts that the novel made me think of:

This novel honestly made me hope that more gay couple/people can have the same will and inner strength as the MC/ML cause the world is obviously prejudiced.

A BL novel more on the realistic side, I can almost relate to most of MC's struggles. Struggles with family, goals, etc., were realistic I may have gotten a lesson or two on how to handle these things better. Just the lack of a partner like ML is missing 😂

Also, their first s*xual experience was one of the most passionate firsts I've read maybe hahaha. I felt like I've been force-fed by their sweetness ><
