Fake Slackers

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

After class placements were decided, the school’s two infamous ‘problem youths’ not only shared the same class, but the same desk.

They’re clearly good at studies, but pretend to be slackers. Fakers from head to toe who just keep walking farther down the path of their performance.

Heard through the grapevine about the two big brothers who always fight over the last place in class.

Basically, this is a serious comedy. About the little matters of growing up.

This story is basically all about daily school life. It has a refreshing vibe to it. This is a first slice of life I've read, not regretting it a bit. Author has has done a great job by both highlighting the real life instances and the relationship development between the protagonists.

It's simplistic yet light hearted approach towards eveyday situation is refreshing.I liked the protagonist and the love interest's interactions and their relationship development.

The side characters appear almost at every paragraph. Which I found a bit irritating.

The ML is a gentle... more>> character, and MC's a fierce and silent one. Both are badass. <<less

Had high expectations but in the span of seven chapters, I have put this off like five times. It's that boring. I was waiting for the story to start but seven chapters in and we're hardly ever in school.

The start was poorly established to me. It wasn't able to showcase the core of the story or what it was really about. All I got was him going with his life and I couldn't care less about it.

It felt like the author was unsure where to carry the story at first,... more>> and so they daddled with random stuffs, add some snippets from unimportant (yet) characters before even focusing on the MC and adding more words than action.

And so I was really bored. It has high ratings, raters and reviewers but it's not for me. <<less

I can't give it five stars with my conscience intact... Sorry ?

This is your usual slice of life novel, where nothing too exciting or dangerous happenes. Enjoy highschool life as well as the budding romance between MC/ML. It gets old at one point or another, but even as a slice of life enjoyer, even I need something.. high-stake-ish to happen... But there was literally nothing going on all the time except their relationship, so when that got boring, I dropped it

MC: cool and stoic with a soft heart archetype. Some... more>> people here seem to think it's unique..? Well, I've read enough cold duke of the North's to be bored with this by now... Haha... Not to mention, I didn't find him likeable at all? Nor particularly smart, despite being told that he's intelligent all the time and that he can solve these really hard problems, but he doesn't act very intelligent in his day to day life, and his EQ is about rock bottom, too. He lacks empathy and has a "not my business/I don't care" air that doesn't dissipate much even for people he likes. I thought he was very rude/mean/tsundere?? To the ML, and god, I've had enough male tsunderes for three lifetimes already...

ML: honestly solid. Looks scary but is a total golden retriever. Yeah, he's not unique either, but I'm not as bored/exasperated by golden retriever bfs as I am with tsunderes. He's a bit of a bleeding heart and very empathetic.

Premise: they're both secretly geniuses, but hide it. Both of their reasons turned out to be beyond s*upid in the end. This novel held out on me for so long just to give me these bullsh*t reasons. Spoilers ahead

Spoiler

ill be short and sweet - MC, the "intelligent guy", really couldn't find a better way to deal with his father in law and protect his mother? And how was he planning to "make life easier for her" when he just makes her worry all day? Honestly this was so poorly thought out... That I think he didn't put any thoughts into it at all ?! And the father in law, like an npc, saying "my son has to shine" for his s*upid son, and his son hating MC for seemingly no reason, everything is unreasonable. MC going along with it is nonsense. MC's friends from blackwater street being kept in the dark also alludes to MC's lack of humanity - he doesn't have a solid relationship with anybody, including his bf, mother, and best friend.

Moving swiftly forward to ML. ML blew up a lab from an experiment and his friend got blamed and kicked out of school for it. Yeah, that's it. So ML decided to be tr*sh to atone?? I'm. What? It wasn't even his fault fr, but he blames himself so much? He's a bleeding heart and his reason is even more nonsense than MC's. I low-key thought this Lei friend that got implicated DIED or something, that's how much he was traumatized XD. He's also emotionally unstable. He has these burst outs that are really unjustified in intensity for the situation.

Also about MC's apathy: his bf is next to him, visibly distraught/traumatized, and this guy's like: tsk, here, have a lollipop or something. But I'm not doing this because I like you or anything!! (Leaves)

Me: no, you don't have to like him, just be a decent human being...

Yes, MC is considered "not a decent human being" in my eyes. He doesn't gaf Abt others or even consider them friends. And it's all part of his lone wolf aesthetic. Cold duke of the north, this isn't your genre, in real life, people would hate you for this.

ML isn't unloved or touch starved - his father is very supportive - so why is he digging MC's hot and cold behavior? I really don't get it. He even finds it cute. I guess tsunderes are REALLY not my thing, because I don't get it.. lol

[collapse]

Anyways. The maturity in this one is very, shamelessly low, and while it's a light read, it's also a bit boring.

Ah, the side cast? Well... They exist. What else can I say? Our MC doesn't pursue friendships with any of them or really have any interest towards them so we get their personalities in passing mentions. Frankly none of them are very important. The plot could've well progressed without mentioning a single one of them.

As for the mother, best friend, and few classmates, as well as the two guys from ML's old school, yeahhh, they're all plot devices. Either there so we can learn more about MC/ML or idek. Why are they there again..? Filler? Other readers seem to think the side characters are fleshed out.? No..? I have to disagree... Maybe I've just read actually fleshed out side characters so this really doesn't amuse me.

Erm, so I did drop this, but I don't have much hope for the future chapters, including the spoiled

Loved it, was worth reading. If you're in high-school yourself or have just graduated, its the perfect one for you.

For many, this book might not be relatable whether its because of their mental age, or just anything else. But for me personally, as someone who just graduated from a highschool that emphasizes studies, the plot was very realistic.

I could literally resonate with it. I've found many novels where I felt that my emotional maturity is insufficient to go through with it, the plot line is too annoying, too much of... more>> angsty misunderstandings that make you want to drop it. But this one was none of those. I enjoyed the fluff, their fights, their interactions, the characters both main and side, their studies, and their innocence. Saying that they would stay together for a life time was I suppose one of the few rare unrealistic things about this book lol. After all, highschool sweethearts are almost never your life partner, not the right choice.

Then again, compared to impossible things (in real life) like rebirth or transmigration, high-school sweethearts is pretty real.

Love you author, thanks for this great book. I enjoyed it

PS: I re-read it thrice in the past month haha <<less

I absolutely love it!! Reading the novel was definitely the best idea I could've made, and the fact that it was more than 100 chapters was very enticing from the start. I really love the main couple, and their dynamic. Xie yu is quiet yet needy and He zhao is just too cute with him lol. Even though highschool wasn't too far ago, I feel so nostalgic like a grandparent watching their grandkids grow up. It's a very easy read and if you have the time, please consider reading this... more>> if you really enjoy fluffy scenes and comedic moments! I really can't explain how much dog food I was being fed while reading this.

Goodluck to whoever is considering reading this, it's a masterpiece! <<less

Recommended to read! This novel seemly very ordinary, but still was able to leave a deep impression.

MC and ML are both well known to be tyrants in the school, are put into one class and it marks a new beginning of a memorable school year.

MC is cold and aloof, very stingy with words, saving his warmth inside for the few people he truly cares about. ML is very outgoing, witty and likes to go bullshitting always. Both of them have their own back stories which have led them into their... more>> current eternal firsts from last. From the annoying the other and being annoyed relationship, the MC and ML find themselves already fallen in love. After they solve their problems, they come back with their glorious marks regaining their lost selves, carrying the hopes for a better future with each other. The supporting roles played an indispensable part in the novel as well.

But the plot had some parts where it was not concluded well. Some things were left unexplained. Except for that the novel was great with loads of fun. <<less

3.5/5.0

It kept me entertained; it's just a fluffy high school romance novel. At times it even caused nostalgia due to how similar some parts were to my actual high school experience.

I lost a bit of interest near the ending because it focused way more on the side characters and the class dynamic as a whole instead of the romance, but it didn't crash and burn at the end like a lot of Danmei so there's that.

After the MC and ML figure out that they're both fake slackers the romance basically... more>> stagnates and the plot just keeps wandering aimlessly, throwing unnecessary subplots at you (i.e. Random Basketball arc) that don't even have romance and instead aim to give more screentime to the rest of MC's classmates. Even the extras include the classmates butting in every time MC and ML are going to have a private moment together lol. <<less

It's been a while so I'm sorry if I somehow mix this up with something else. This is also biased because this was the first bl I read (as a novel) and the reason why I have dove into the rabbit hole.

The story was pretty fluffy and funny. Although it's been a while I still remember how MC and ML came to know each other's intelligence. It was a pretty memorable scene. ... more>>

3.5, I read this because people kept recommending it to me, but I think I'm just too old for this novel. It is a high school slice of life romance that was trying to be deep, but was actually superficial. I guess I'm a cynic, but the idea that a hormone infused first love will last forever seems too far fetched to me. Also all the high school slice of life wasn't for me. The basketball competition and the dance part, I found boring and skipped a lot.

I almost dropped... more>> it at chapter 28 as the first 50 chapters were hard for me to get through, but after chapter 50 the story picks up. The fake slacker aspect is carried on until around chapter 100, kind of drawn out, but not too bad. I will say the author ended the story at a good time, right when I was starting to get really bored. The last extra is a must.

The MC was not my favorite, typical rebellious, angry teen. His "tragic" backstory was too weak to justify his attitude and how he treated others. Honestly if the MC hadn't been such an angsty teenager, he got a different backstory, or lived in a different situation, I would have liked this novel more. The ML was a bit too shameless, but I really liked him. His tragic backstory made more sense to me of why he pretended to be a slacker. Their romance was cute and the MC wasn't always a cold jerk, you can tell that he really loves the ML.

The real gem was class 3 and the teachers. I think they were some of the more interesting side characters I've read in a long time and I appreciate that they didn't do a class bullying or teacher bully route (I know the original teacher kind of was, but she didn't stay around long)

All in all it was written okay, most of the characters were interesting, but it's just not for me. I can see however, how others would really love this novel.

I tried reading the manhua first, but is on hiatus, manga/manhua high school stories are usually okay for me so tried there first. <<less

The novel is light-hearted and hilarious, filled with chaotic youth energy and innocent love. It has a rather slow pace but if you enjoy slice of life, it shouldn’t be a problem.

(Most) characters were likeable and I love the classmates so much since some of them reminded of my friends as well. The dynamic between MC and ML was fun as they relentless competed to see who was the worse delinquent (but it didn’t go pass the moral line since they just pretended to be lazy and bad at... more>> studying, not went around bullying people or some shits), and as the time went by, they started to feel affection towards each other, caring for one another. The MC and ML also struggled in their own way, having to deal with their personal issues and learn how to overcome them. It feels so natural and it warms my heart.

Highly recommended. <<less

I love this novel. This is a highschool dormitory and slice of life novel where Xie Yu and He Zhao are seen as tyrants of the school but are actually just undercover smartasses for their own reasons.

Xie Yu is the kid in class that's seen as quiet and scary so no one dares to even breathe too loud and He Zhao is the energetic kid that would hype people up. Both of their reputations are as a tyrant of the school, the ones that beat people up.

Throughout the novel the... more>> class gradually warms up to the both of them and they aren't seen as tyrants anymore, although it may not be the same for the rest of the school.

The side characters were amazing and added a lot of chaos and humour, although there might be one or two misunderstandings. I've honestly read this novel so many times and the manhua adaption is also amazing, the art is really great. I recommend you read it too. <<less

Another one to add to my favorites list. Can't believe I waited so long before taking this off from its permanent spot on my to read list.

This story was so adorable. I appreciate that the MC was so strong and remains strong throughout, even in the relationship. Both of my boys are the cutest, and there's so much dog food before they even actually get together. I love that the MC takes no shits and says everything directly, going right for it when he realizes that he likes the ML.... more>> He's also so sly and teases the ML and is quite forward, which I appreciate. The part where they're both hiding their OP brains lasts a bit but ends right before I get annoyed by them going in circles around each other.

Love it. I've been finding so many sweet BLs lately, this must be heaven. <<less

When a person graduates from highschool, they can’t help but look back and have a sense of deja vu whenever they do something similar when they're older. And then, they'd realise that they're still a pure child at heart, still themselves at the very end.

Fake slackers is an amazing, emotion invoking and simply beautiful novel. The author has a way of writing colourful characters that seem to perfectly jump straight out of one's adolescence and, paired with various relatable scenarios, the author paints an expressive highschool experience. At the very... more>> least, it was a story that was very, very touching and similarly, very tear-jerking to me.

I personally love MCs like Xie Yu, a seemingly cold but just awkwardly kind-hearted boy and MLs like He Zhao, a seemingly brave and suave yet soft-hearted person.

This novel conveys its message perfectly: enjoying your youth's happiness and sadness, laughs and cries, embarrassments and frustrations, longings and amazement at how it just shamelessly breezes past. Time always runs, but our memories will wait for us to catch them every once in a while, all we need to do is look back.

If I had to pick a phrase to describe this novel, it’d be: Youth’s beauty.

Truthfully, I couldn't bear to read the 3 extra chapters simply because I didn't want this journey to end, but I prevailed and I'm happy I did. After all, I got a few more laughs and tears at midnight like a highly emotional teen. Only to abruptly realise, yes the novel has ended, but for Xie Yu and He Zhao, their life's journey has just kicked-off.

I'll miss these characters, definitely will re-read in the future! <<less

Ok, so I don't know what to say so I'll be short, I'm still reading this and to be frank I love it. It's slow but I'll bear with it for a while. I'm interested in stories like this and can't wait to see how the relationship between the MC and ML will turn out, I am always fond of tropes like this and I am enjoying the story so far. But how slow it is just can't compare to my patience but I'll continue to read it.

The novel itself 3/5.

The plot line is almost non-existent. I understand the focus is on school and for a slice of life novel there's not much room for intriguing elements like magic or monsters and the like, but I was hoping was a solid background for the characters, for very interesting, dramatic reasons of why they are the way they are. But it wasn't the case for this novel. Which is unfortunate, because I sense a lot potential in the author's barebone characterization and worldbuilding.

The translation 2/5. Some notes refer... more>> to things that can be inferred while many, many things are not translated properly, some are left in pinyin and not explained, which used to be a big no-no in Chinese novel translations 5-ish years ago but now it's become a terrible plague. And some things are translated but because they're not explained properly, they fall falt. In other words, when monikers or expressions later become puns or jokes between the characters, the meaning is lost because they were not handled great before.

Ethics 1/5. When I read somewhere that this translation is pay-walled I thought it was like suika & Co that have a form when you need to attach receipts of JJWXC chapters you purchased. But this is a translation that requires payment, like a license. But it's not licensed, because otherwise it would have an ISBN like every other novel in existence. If there's no license all the money is going to the translator and not to the author. And that's just... Let's just say that He Zhao is not the only shameless person around here. <<less

One of the best danmei ive read so far. I read the manhua first and I liked it so I went to find the novel. I love the main characters and how funny they are. I like how the side characters are part of the novel and not just appear once in awhile, they weren't there 99% of the time but were there enough for me to love them. Even if people think its repetitive to some people, it's still an amazing read and you will love it. This was so good!! I especially like the fact that there were no misunderstandings in their relationship (if you don't them misunderstanding the others iq 🤣).

I also like the side characters, they're funny and interesting. And the fact that their whole class still stayed in contact with each other like; my class could Never 🙄 😂 but other than that this is definitely a must read!!!
