Lin Qin was a low-key new film Emperor who didn’t even go to receive his award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Recently, he accepted a love reality show, just because his partner would be the male god – Meng Chao.

Meng Chao was a legend in the entertainment circle, he went to the pinnacle of his career right on his debut and was a tall, elegant and aloof male god in the eyes of fans.

For some reason, he accepted to participate in a love-reality show.

The moment he saw his partner, Meng Chao only felt his heart that had been silent for more than two decades, moved…..

The last recording (of the reality show) was by live broadcast and was at Meng Chao’s home.

The camera aimed at the movie emperor’s big bed, where Lin Qin sat up from the bed, staring blearily, as he softly called “husband” at the movie emperor.

[Before I get started with this review, here's some advice to anyone who wants to read about a cute gay MC with social anxiety: please avoid this terrible novel and try '2D Otaku with Social Anxiety Also Wants to Date!' instead. I could 100% relate to everything that MC went through, emphasis on feeling awkward around "normies"!]

First off, this novel is on my reading hiatus list. I want to keep reading it in order to give a better review here, but it made me so angry that I'm not sure... more>> I can stomach continuing to read. Rated 2 stars because this is one of the most naive, erroneous and misguided depictions of mental health disorders that I have ever read. This is an example of how an author's ignorance can ruin a perfectly good story. The author clearly has done zero research regarding the key issues of trauma or social phobia, both of which I have plenty of personal experience with. So I can tell you honestly and clearly that this novel made me angry, disgusted and sad. Because the way trauma and social phobia was described in this novel made it seem like you can "get better" without real medical treatment. There is no cure for either PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder, the illness you get from trauma) or social anxiety disorder (the acronym is SAD, aka social phobia). Period. No cure. You can't get rid of it with some feel good romance and positive social interactions, or even real medically monitored exposure therapy.

Chapter 36 made me angry enough I almost vomited blood:

Spoiler

"It wasn't that Lin Qin didn't want to let go, but that he didn't know how to. No matter whether he was facing the staff or the guests who were participating in the recording, his performance was still the same.

Nervous, trembling, sweaty palms.

These were all symptoms of social phobia, and the director had long suspected it, but didn't say it.

He could see Lin Qin's efforts, trying to accept the people around him, trying to come out.

It was clear that Lin Qin's efforts were effective, because today he had done very well. When he played the game, he completely let go."

Completely unrealistic, not to mention untrue, the author's view on SAD is just plain wrong. Social anxiety symptoms don't happen because a person doesn't know how to interact with people. Social anxiety can't be cured by "learning how to be a gregarious/outgoing person"... it's not a problem of lack of techniques or skills, and it's definitely not a problem that can be overcome simply by "trying/wanting to put yourself out there" and "getting better by willpower alone"... a huge misconception of the disorder. This is an actual mental disorder (even ordinary phobias are also mental disorders). Mental illness that is a chronic disorder with a genetic component can never be overcome by "learning to be more social" or "using willpower to overcome inner fears"... this author is too ignorant, and is promoting a huge misunderstanding about the disorder. Any doctor will tell you that this disorder can never be overcome entirely by increasing the amount a person interacts socially, because it's really not just about being shy.

For instance, later in chapter 36, it describes the ML Meng Chao as seeing significant improvement in the ability of Lin Qin (MC) to interact naturally with members of the crew on their variety show. [But... he didn't take any meds or go to therapy, so getting "cured by a relaxing environment" is highly unlikely to the point that this plot can't be believed at all.] Not only that, but Meng Chao said that Lin Qin would be cured eventually from his illness:

"Looking at Lin Qin's carefree smile in the video, Meng Chao also smiled.

However he knew that this was just the beginning and that Lin Qin would gradually get better. Like normal people, he would be able to accept public scrutiny, favor, and accept the focused attention of others."

What kind of nonsense is this? SAD is a chronic disorder without a permanent cure, it has a genetic/physiological component and even with medication and therapy, you can only lessen the severity of symptoms and not remove the illness from its root. As for treating the illness simply be being around nice people in a relaxing environment, I'm sorry but things like love or prayer cannot cure mental illness. My family members shower me with love and affection, but they will never be able to cure me of S.A.D. And when they expose me to dinner parties, mixers, and chaotic situations with a ton of face to face interaction with strangers, no matter how much my family loves me, they cannot change an ounce of my chronic avoidance and fear of social contact with strangers! Basically, only medication and therapy has a lasting effect, in combination with good sleep, diet and regular exercise... it's pure nonsense to say that a family member/lover/friends can cure someone of SAD by exposing them to happy social interactions with strangers. That might actually make a SAD person more anxious and cause that person to hate/resent their loved ones for forcing them into a situation they hate.

After reading further, it's clear that Lin Qin has primarily PTSD with SAD manifesting because of a traumatic experience with bullies (his problem stems from trauma). His cousin Chu Hong said that before the bullying incident, he had a carefree, confident personality... it's normal for people to develop social anxiety after childhood trauma (s*xual, physical, religious/spiritual or emotional ab*se encountered in bullying by peers or ab*se by family, etc). In addition, scary, humiliating, or overwhelming experiences can cause an individual to develop a fear of rejection and other human beings. My problem at this point is that the plot may be slightly feasible (in terms of the reasons why Lin Qin rejects being close to strangers and is anxious in social situations), but that it's obviously written from the perspective of a healthy/no social fear author. I really can't empathize with Lin Qin even though I've been suffering this kind of illness for so long. Compared to other novels that describe a person with SAD, Lin Qin comes off less as a socially anxious person and more as a shy person who endured some trauma. Because a SAD person can't just cure himself by trying to "put himself out there"... especially because of his trauma, without addressing the trauma he should probably always have some anxiety symptoms.

Ch 43:
Spoiler

Another erroneous "exposure treatment" plot where the author claims Lin Qin's illness is entirely due to anxiety (not related to trauma), and that SAD can be completely fixed with exposure therapy that isn't even coordinated by a real medical professional (ugh, it's a medical condition but no doctor has appeared so far, but the ML actually thinks he can cure his bf without any interaction with therapist or doctor... overconfident much?)

"In the treatment of social phobia, there was a type of exposure treatment, that is to put the patient in a variety of environments that could cause anxiety and fear and to cause anxiety indefinitely. Until the patient, in such an environment calmed down his emotions thus serving the purpose of the treatment."

It's true that exposure therapy can be helpful for certain situations people with SAD face, but it has its limits (often therapists dislike this treatment because it doesn't address the nuances of the illness, and it's not effective on every patient with SAD - you can go search on the subreddit for social anxiety as proof). Such as, exposure therapy for public speaking is quite helpful. But exposure therapy in and of itself (and isolated from other forms of medical intervention such as medicine and counseling) cannot completely cure a SAD patient of the inner urge to avoid social situations with strangers. It can basically only reduce the level of symptoms for certain high stress situations, but it doesn't treat the root of the illness. Modern medical science simply has no complete, permanent cure for SAD (that also works on 100% of patients, 100% of the time) due to the distinct lack of knowledge about the human brain. Well, due to lack of knowledge about the brain, medical science has no cure for any chronic mental disorder, which is why countless people will be miserable for quite some time to come.

I'm not much of a skilled reviewer and haven't done so in a long time. Love love love this novel and definitely will repeat this.

this is a story about an actor with social anxiety due to a traumatic past (bullying) and a easy-going but not easy to fool seasoned actor.

MC have a crush for a long time even b4 becoming an actor (even becoming an actor just to be able to be close to ML) tbh a bit weird but if you read the backstory it feels rightfully so.

this is... more>> kind of a lighthearted novel and for me doesn't aroused much emotion other than giddiness and laughter. (Plus anger)

if you think about it, it is weird by how the ML likes him on the spot but if you think again. That is probably the ML's personality alone

as he is introduced as someone with a high EQ and can easily communicate with other people without having them feel distanced by the politeness nor disrespected due to the humor.

it's probably only after the ML interacted with the MC that he become fond with him.

the romance plot is very quick and both of them are aware of what they want and communicate clearly. (Ofc initiated by the ML). There's NONE of the dogblood stuff nor misunderstanding, both of them are also VERY trusting of e/o.

and the MC, despite being afraid to communicate, he is not afraid to try and overcome the social anxiety/phobia for the sake of his beloved people and even though he is afraid to talk doesn't mean he is afraid to stand up for himself (with the ML by his side ofc) but tbh ML only offers the MC his mental support instead of doing everything for him and even the ML himself encourage and try to make MC to communicate and get out of his shell

I also love how they approach the mc's traumatic past and reveal what power and money could do to your life.

Every villain n minor villain got the karma that they deserved but the main antagonist (the one who is the traumatic past) part got me hollering 'YES' at 3 a.m.
    • i love how the ML respect and didn't pry about the past to the MC. (Even though he did ask about the general thing to his cousin)
    • how the cousin didn't reveal everything as she feels it is not her place to say and only MC have the right to talk about it when he is ready
    • how ML and everyone try to encourage MC to heal
    • they have a side couple but not too focused on them
but still there are some things that I am not fond about:

Spoiler

how they have their first time after the MC got SA by his highschool bully. Even after the ML said he didn'twant to do it only because the MC wants to forget. But ig he got through something traumatic again and needed the physical assurance and plus there's consents from both party

[collapse]

AND HOW ABRUPTLY ENDED THE STORY WASS

i need the wedding

i need the honeymoon

how about the ML's brother and his husband?

what about the MC's parents????

A short but cute story. Might be a lil strange due to how the ML just fell in love at first sight and immediately became obsessed but as a BL enjoyer we ignore that. Not much to see here, basically just the MC slowly overcoming his childhood trauma with the help of the ML. Thanks to his condition, we don't see much relationship intimacy but the tenderness from the ML is blatant throughout. Not much depth to it but the process of the couple getting together was very sweet. Add... more>> in some cliche antagonists and some drama and that's about it. <<less

MC such a soft bun and he will gradualllyyy overcome he's traumas. Doing his best and now with ML beside him. Villains come and go and got their just justice. Wit MC facing the wall in his heart due to his past and facing the future more positively. Story was mainly more on variety episodes together with mc's healing journey. Finally MC and ML being together and having each other~

If you’re looking for fluffiness then this is it. I love the MC and ml, they are cute and sweet. The love is also amazing. I just think the ending is bit too abrupt for me. Could do with few extras

the MC and ML are really sweet together. They came together pretty quickly since the ML is the MC’s salvation. The ML was always very gentle with the MC. The ML slowly brought the MC out of his shell from his social phobia and he learned how to trust and be happy again. Lots of face slapping too. Nice read.

So Fluffy and So Lovely so far!

It's the Early Romance type of story where when ML and MC meet, they just click and didn't take them too long to be Close and have the Good feeling.

MC is Quiet and Very Shy but still Cute and Caring. ML is observant, Caring and Helpful. He want what's best for MC. Really Sweet Couple!

... more>> The story so far is Great. Nothing heavy and just Light and nice. It does have a Face slapping though. Not sure if they would have more.

The main theme is just Sweet Love and really Gentle !

Pray so hard the rest of the story is as Good and Satisfying as well!!! 🙏 Finished at 4 April 2024:

For the Faceslapping all was Necessary ones. Because honestly, most of time I want to knead the Villains into a ball and throw it in the Fire pit.

Love how the MC keep having positive progress and in the end he can handle the problem with Calm mind because everyone who cares about him is there to support him. That's the most important!

Also most of time the novel was so Fluffy that I forgot both MC and ML haven't married yet. Lol

Anyway this novel is Really Wonderful and I Love it SOOOOOOO MUCH FOREVER ETERNALLY AND BEYOND!! <<less

Saw this a long time ago and wanted to read it but put it off because tbh wasn't interested in reading an entertainment book centering on a variety show (personally don't watch variety shows). But this was a really (really x 10) sweet read. The variety show aspect wasn't as strong as I expected, only featured guest coming, some drama (and minor face slapping) and then romance progression.

MC has some serious social phobia that's understandable with his past but he's very dedicated to his profession. At first I wondered... more>> how he can overcome it in his job but he does it by immersion. And over the course of the book, he slowly comes out of his shell with help of a very supportive ML.

There's almost no conflict in the book, it's really just full of sugar (some external conflict but comes with swift face slapping) hence the minus 0.5 but an excellent read if you want a fluffy book. The relationship is just goals. And even if it's full of sugar and smooth-sailing, the book hits certain dark parts of the entertainment business like
Spoiler

the struggle of getting famous (some people choosing to do it by hanging onto a golden thigh), the struggles of that group of child actors trying to stay relevant.

[collapse]

Overall the sweetest and most supportive CP. There's a side CP but for once (as someone who loves side CP), there's not much chemistry there but I really do like ML's brother. Maybe there's extras for them? Will have to find. Otherwise the side CP seemed to pop out of nowhere and then they were together. Still a good read with a great HEA. <<less
