Before the age of 27, Ning Zhiyuan’s name was Cen Zhiyuan. His family was wealthy, and he possessed both capability and means. With ambitious aspirations, he single-mindedly aimed to compete with his elder brother, who was the designated successor of the family business. This continued until a paternity test overturned everything.

As it turned out, from the very beginning, he didn’t even have the qualifications to compete.

With this change in identity, the first person to extend a helping hand to him was none other than his elder brother, whom he had always found disagreeable and incompatible.

Cen Zhisen had always felt that, aside from having a good-looking face, his younger brother had no likable qualities. He was overly competitive, scheming, and frivolous. From childhood to adulthood, their relationship had always been at odds, deteriorating to the point of hostility over the family inheritance. However, when he saw the usually composed man, upon learning about his true parentage, suppress red eyes and briefly reveal a moment of confusion and helplessness, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy.

His s*xual orientation leaned towards men. The former Cen Zhiyuan was his unpleasant younger brother, and now Ning Zhiyuan… Having restrained those confrontations and sharp edges, he was surprisingly appealing.

—He became the object of his interest.

Cen Zhisen x Ning Zhiyuan

Mature rogue x Playful character

The receiver is a wealthy family’s fake young master, not blood-related to the aggressor

I was hesitant and thought I would be uncomfortable, but surprisingly liked it. No crazy drama about real/fake kids except for some annoying relatives, but the central characters are understandable if not generally likeable. Novel focuses on MC letting go of some of the past and resolving some misunderstandings w/ ML, and the MC learning what love is. Most of the side characters are very much on the side, and thus are quite 2D, but it fits very well since the focus is very much on the MC. A lot... more>> of the things I was concerned about ended up being perfectly fine because the author made them fit so well together XD. <<less

One of the novel that hooked me from start to end!

What makes this novel so different with others is the depths, the unusual love, and not too over dramatic yet allows us to get deeper in their innermost tension.

They're both equals and mature, despite each of them are problematic. But that's how they're fit in to each other.

... more>> And their parents! Super awesome the way the writer describe their struggle to understand their unique sons (if not being seen as sinful to other) and gradually accept them as a couple.

This novel is worth to read, trust me! <<less

I would say I love this. It’s not the typical fake young master trope so it’s truly refreshing. I also enjoy how MC quickly recover from the truth. I do still think they need to see therapist, but otherwise this is good and I love it.

Especially the s*xual tension between them.

Also have to disagree that just because MC became the shou then he “lost” or something. No, I actually think it’s equal for both of them and MC also loves to tease ML many times.

MC is a bit of a s*umbag toward the ML, to not say a lot.. Although I understand his mindset I can't cope with all his teasing. I felt frustrated for the ML. However despite that the love story was really sweet with not much of smut but enough to arise appetite. It might sounds crazy but this toxic relationship with both of them dead set on each other give a green flag vibes... I don't know if it's make sense.. well... readers may have to read it to understand... more>> what I meant x) <<less

I came across this book coincidentally and lucky me I found a gem.

The first half had me kicking and squirming. It was palpable tension. The ambiguousness, the subtleness, you can readily feel that by reading. While the second half, was both sad and happy. The gradual change in the relationship, the realizations of what love is to both characters felt real. (THE SMUT WAS JUST A BONUS)

It's also rare to come across such stories of swapped birth where the original and the fake aren't fighting. But there's barely an... more>> interaction with them in this book. The plot mainly focuses on the MC and ML's relationship.

Don't be bothered really with the fake that they were brothers before the reveal, they grew apart mostly and estranged than close knit families. And I get what ML said to their father to acknowledge their relationship. They would've cultivated familial bond and stayed as brothers despite the reveal if they got the love and care when they were children.

It's such an interesting novel to be honest. It feels raw. Kudos to the author! <<less

I liked this novel. At first I wasn't sure about reading it since MC, Ning Zhiyuan, sounded a bit jerkish but I'm glad I gave it a chance. The novel has a slight melancholic flavor as MC's and ML's, Cen Zhisen, relationship changes from familial to romantic. The past is remembered, with the hurts and at times the good things that MC had forgotten.

MC and ML did care for each other but a wedge had grown between them over time. MC misunderstood ML's actions and motives as the years went... more>> by. In summary, it was a good that MC's true parentage was discovered since it allowed MC to retract his protective spikes and let ML care for him.

Spoiler

MC never hated ML nor wanted to destroy him. He just wanted ML to pay attention to him. He was obsessed with ML since they were children, even wanting to be ML's wife when he was a naive child.

But when he realized that one day ML would have his own life and family, MC pushed him away. He was jealous of everyone around ML and wanted ML only for himself. When he found out that ML was gay, he was happy cause he wouldn't have to fight with ML's future children for his attention. Yep, truly obsessed.

So although ML was the one who persistently pursued MC at first. ML was actually pursued by MC from the very beginning.

Score: B-tier plus

This story is about 2 people whose lives entwined with each other due to "fate", the classic and most common troupe in any kind of novel. The biggest difference? They were raised as brother and found out later on that one of them is a fake one. It's quite simple, even with the mature theme, it's not too complicated and too lighthearted for the supposedly kinda dark theme.

What makes me give it B-tier:

1. The characters. Cen Zhisen and Ning Zhiyuan (formerly Cen Zhiyuan) are 2 very straightforward people.... more>> Too straightforward even, which makes the plot become too simple. Most of what they are doing explained so straightforwardly and it left nothing for the readers to imagine.

2. Plot. The summary makes it sound like a dog blood drama, but instead it's just about 2 people being extreme and fell in love with each other. Most of the "villains" kinda fell off near the end with little explanation. The evil stepmom written off so quickly with a divorce and the evil uncles/aunts just your classic meddlesome people with no real backbone or even the capability of being evil. They're there to fill in the gap in the story on how to make the dad accept his son's relationship and to give somewhat pitiful background for Ning Zhiyuan.

3. Ning Zhiyuan's obsession towards Cen Zhisen. I feel like the author take this too lightheartedly it makes me wonder why there's even this setup. In the beginning, the reader was told that Ning Zhiyuan did some self harm due to his obsession towards his older brother (which the reader know later not his real blood brother, but none of the characters know about it at that time). Ning Zhiyuan even went as far as hating everyone in Cen Zhisen's life who is not him. This obsession is treated as "loving him too much" in the end with almost no mention on whether he even try to seek help to handle it. I was initially interested and keep reading due to this aspect but in the end, it was just brushed off as something romantic, which I think kinda misleading and dangerous in a way.

4. Misleading tag. It's not a smut novel. It's a mature one based on the content and the s*xual tension throughout the entire story, but it's not a smut.

I do enjoy most part of the story. The conflict is so minimal and even the resistance of the parents towards the 2 (non-blood-related) brothers also very abysmal. The author spent an entirety of 3 chapters to discuss about this topic and that's it.

I still think it's an enjoyable read. It's also fast paced and didn't really dwell into a conflict for too long. Everything resolved quickly and smoothly. Not the best but also not the worst either <<less

I don't know.. I feel like there's something lacking and not enough. I read miss/ma'am lazyonegirl review and I agree with her.

This is a novel with undeniably beautiful writing, but beyond that, something about it just feels lacking. The emotions should be there, the pain and struggles should hit hard, yet I was left feeling empty.

A big part of my frustration comes from the male lead. I can’t even fully explain why, but he just irks me so much. There’s something about him, his attitude, his actions (or lack thereof),... more>> the way he handles things sometimes makes me feel like he doesn’t deserve the MC at all. The MC goes through immense hardship, both mentally and physically, yet the ML simply lets it happen, as if it’s justified by what the MC once did to him. But their suffering isn’t even remotely equal. The ML was irritated, maybe hurt, but the MC was completely drained, carrying the weight of hatred and exhaustion simply because of his connection to the ML. And despite his calmness, I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was holding something in, something he never truly got to release—even by the end.

That’s why this novel left me feeling so empty. The MC deserved better, not just in love, but in life. Honestly, I think he would have been better off alone, finding love in different places like his family, his friends, his passions, rather than being tied to someone who never truly matched the depth of what he endured.

The writing is great, but without a satisfying emotional payoff, it just wasn’t enough for me. <<less

Did not like it even though it's fine.

Firslty, thanks for the awesome translation.

Then, I would like to say there are no big problems with this novel, it's just that it felt... flat ? to me.

Maybe it's becauseI don't understand why the ML suddenly like him, or bc I just can't imagine a passionnate relationship when it seems they only see each other once every two months due to their jobs or maybe there's too much talk about their past relationships ... more>>
Spoiler

seriously they can't even get to a place without meeting one of their exe

[collapse]
or even bc it's alot about s*x and the romance is slow in a manner uninteresting to me ?

Honeslty Idk bc it all seems like details, beside that I like the tension between them but I'm just not into it.

Still recommend it.

P.S : sorry for the grammatical mistakes, english isn't my primary langage. <<less

The pacing is just appropriate, not rushed nor slow. No unnecessary dialogues too. With just the description of their actions, it could make you visualize what is going on inside the scene. It was fantastic. Sometimes it prickles your heart and sometimes it warms you up.

Moreover, their relationship, all I can say is the tension between the characters is strong. Their chemistry is very fiery. It is not the type of tug and pull that makes you impatient for the development and build-up of their romance. It was such a... more>> tease.

Overall, I would reread it.

I love it: superb tension, realistic aspects, forbidden romance all in one novel. It’s a psychological novel that explores all the intricacies of a matured, forbidden love.

The characters aren’t particularly likeable— you know, one is promiscuous and the other is indifferent, but their relationship was described fantastically. I love it so much.

However, I do feel that the author sort of rushed parts of the story to get to the romance— it’s like there are missing parts to the story; the switch from the MC still resenting the ML to being... more>> interested in him was a bit abrupt.

I also found that there were extras the tl didn’t translate which I find a shame, but oh well.

I like it, but I feel that there's something missing.

The s*xual tension if off the charts! The relationship of the protagonists is mature and in some way complex. There's no angst or too much fluff. There's no actual villains in the story, I really don't consider the aunts and uncles as villains, they are more of narrow minded people and just loves to covet money from the ML's family/father, no challenge for both the ML and the MC to deal with them.

The family on both sides actually surprises me as... more>> they are very considerate and accepting, although there's a little resistance at first but they don't push the ML and MC to separate. It's just natural especially when they are considered "brother" for 20 plus years. Also, the real brother of the ML is good, he's not someone who fights for the inheritance, he's low key.

The story actually focuses only on the ML and MC and the others are just side dishes. Lol

Overall, if you want a short mature story, this is for you. Also there's a little smut here and there but nothing too explicit. <<less

I absolutely loved this book! Really emotional and well written. Some of their past events were revisited briefly and they both realize how much they misread certain situations. Love their interactions and how they tease each other! Translation was very well done.

The difference in the MC and ML's life is heartbreaking. They both grew up with wealth and privilege in the same household, but that's where the similarities stop. You'll find out why when reading the novel, but it's absolutely s*upid. For two reasons, the MC's life has to be so upended that he doesn't believe in love of any kind.

It's a slow-moving story that focuses on the progression of their feelings for each other and how the MC comes to realize all his memories may not be as he thought.... more>> Once he begins to open up, it's a lovely tale of self-discovery.

And, no, I wasn't bothered by the 'brothers' becoming lovers. Once their DNA was uncovered, none of that mattered anymore. Especially since they hadn't been close in a very long time.

Note - My rating would be a 4.5 if it were available. <<less

I have not been able to finish a single novel so far this year. I’ve been yearning for a story that could completely pull me in, one that would drown me in its world and refuse to let me surface. This one was such an unexpected find. I’m not even sure anymore how I came across it, but it has stayed with me like no other.

What I love most is how this novel drenched me in the love shared by the two people at its heart. The layered metaphors of... more>> the port project and the realization that home is not a physical place. For the protagonist, who has spent his life feeling aimless, searching and longing for somewhere to belong, his harbor was always this one person.

The novel gently walks us through the protagonist’s journey as he asks, one by one, “What is love?” Each step brings him closer to uncovering what he—and we—already know but struggle to name. And then comes the poem by Neruda—“Here I love you.”

And if that wasn’t enough, it also ruined me with its beautiful usage of Canon in D, weaving its melody into the emotional journey, leaving me completely undone. <<less
