This is a slice-of-life novel with some fantasy elements (a golden finger and some mysticism) and strong poor-to-rich sentiments. These kinds of things just so happened to be just my type, so I ended up enjoying this both during my first read and during my second read (which is now! I left the old review at the end for reference).

SUMMARY:

Yu Xiaocao woke up one day and found out that she had transmigrated into the body of a fisherman's daughter in ancient times. This little girl's father was extremely filial, and... more>> as a result, had been used and ab*sed by his stepmother for most of his life, leading to a rather pitiful life for him and his branch of the family. Yu Xiaocao, the transmigrator, was the hardworking type who supported her family by working constantly in her previous life. So, even now, after ending up as an 8-year-old girl with no backing, she dares to dream of a better future for her current family. Fortunately for her, she transmigrated with a golden finger -- a divine stone that can produce water that can help ripen the growth of crops, increase intelligence in animals, promote better health, etc. -- which allows her to smoothly build a legendary life for herself, her family, and later, her husband (the ML, Zhu Junyang, who was plagued by inner demons since he was a child.)

THOUGHTS:

To be perfectly honest, this novel has quite a few flaws. The author was a bit careless when it came to developing the worldbuilding settings at times, and there were constant inconsistencies (thankfully, the translators pointed most of them out, but there were even more that I noticed that just slipped the radar.) It also introduced so many events and so many characters that many were forgotten until the end -- while I understand that the reason for this is to increase the pacing and allow the story to keep moving forward, it's a shame at times when certain interesting concepts would be introduced and quickly forgotten -- it would be best if they just weren't mentioned in the first place LMFAO.

But, well, these many flaws aside, taking account of my own personal enjoyment. I still rate this novel quite highly. Last time I read this, I stopped at around the 500s. This time, I persisted and read till the end, but I agree with most reviewers that it got a bit boring and repetitive by that point. What I recommend you read this for are the characters and the satisfying self-indulgent plot development. Here, one can say that the FL is definitely super OP. However, because of her personality, she never comes off as a complete Mary Sue. There are hints, for sure, but for the most part, because the author did a great job building her character in the beginning, she ended up being rather likable -- which made it easy to enjoy the story as it went.

OH. BTW. If you're looking to read this for romance, I don't recommend it. Although I loved the bickering couple, it takes a while for them to get there (the age gap is quite large, and they don't marry till she's of legal age). So, it's best to start with the intention of enjoying the slice of life, poor-to-rich aspect first, and just enjoy the unique romance in the middle.

RATING: 4.2/5

Although this rating should probably be lower (at least, if I based it on the quality of the writing itself), it wouldn't be too much lower. XD. I was even tempted to make it round up to 5 stars -- simply because I enjoyed it so much. But, ah, it's not meant to be. This novel is definitely not for everyone, but I think if you have similar tastes as me, it's one that's impossible to forget.

_____________

OLD REVIEW: C523. 4/5!!! [Transmigration, Magical Spring (of sorts), Poor to Rich, Slice of Life] This was a lot better than I expected initially. It's a bit weird cause the MC starts of as 8yo and the ML 15yo (?). She's mentally over 30 and the attraction between the two is mostly pure until she's like 13 — at which point there are some chaste kisses, but it's still weird! The initial premise is that a woman is transmigrated into the body of a poor and sickly fisherman's daughter. As luck would have it, she has on her hand a mystical stone that acts as a spiritual spring, and with this, she has a certified golden finger that can help her run businesses and make lots of money.

I feel like some parts of the universe are a bit shaky and underdeveloped, but the characters are all pretty good and likeable. I wouldn't say that the story is perfect — the slow pacing is hell sometimes, but I enjoyed reading it. I stopped because I slowly began to run out of interest. The life of the MC is good now and even if she and the ML weren't strictly together together, they were already a sure thing — it's just her age keeping them apart... she was 13 and him 19-20 at the end. m (._.) m Worth rereading for the slice of life and poor to rich aspect. <<less

The story is nice with good development. Slice of life with a bit of fantasy. I like that the story is not much redundant. After I read it I feel good about the story. The first chapters are a bit frustrating but as the chapters goes you can find the changes and development.

Entertaining, and it stays slice of life - most stories of this length set in ancient china tend to be full of drama and ridiculous characters, but this one was fairly wholesome. No messy concubines everywhere. Filial piety was way overdone for quite awhile - really, before her ... more>>

father nearly dies and they split from the rest of the family,

it's pretty infuriating to read. You might skip to chapter 60ish if it's too much. The parents are foolishly doting, but completely ineffectual at protecting their children (it's great that you want to defy your mom to bring your kid to the doctor, but maybe you should work harder at preventing the kid from being starved, ab*sed, and overworked to the point they need the doctor..?) - many people disliked them, but I think at least part of it can be explained by cultural norms and upbringing. Many people in abusive families don't really realize it or break away because that's their normal. Filial piety is no joke in ancient times. I found the MC a little annoying at times in the beginning, because she can be rather rude and bratty for her mental age. She settles down a bit, but I do think the author forgets her mental age.
Spoiler

I liked the setup of having earlier transmigrators pave the way and bring some modern ideals (taking care of the people, equality, later marriages, etc) to this era before she came. This helps do away with some of the more realistic problematic aspects of suddenly being tossed in ancient times, where most modern people would probably get executed instantly. She maintains a fairly modern view throughout, and is considered a little eccentric but also inspirational to her friends and family. It's also funny how those other transmigrators love that she brought modern recipes with her, and run to eat at her house. I thought it would be interesting if in the end they also reunited in their modern world. The author apparently forgot that the emperor emeritus actually realized she was a transmigrator almost immediately - from a modern tongue twister she recited and her recipe.

[collapse]

You have to overlook inconsistent or illogical details. The author has zero grasp of money or weights - when you look at the random costs for things, it makes no sense. It's like if I said $100 is enough for a frugal family of 10 to live on for a year, then a few minutes later said $150 will last that family a few months, btw an apple is $15, and a plate of food at a restaurant is $1000. A family of 12 wants 100 catties of vegetables DAILY or 500 catties are needed for a restaurant to serve a single table. And people are on the edge of starving to death, but apparently don't eat offal or any of that until she comes along. It's also pretty obvious that the author couldn't juggle very many characters at once. Important people would vanish for a while and then pop up suddenly as if the author forgot them. Sometimes their names would change, or little details about their family would be different. She has a pretty powerful cheat, but it's not around much during later chapters. Thanks to her knowledge of the future, she is able to make a lot of money (the author neglects to realize how much this should have impacted history). Then there would be some stuck up nobles, or it would go on about how you can see the nobility bred in her bones - as if the author forgot that the current imperial family and most of his officials were peasants until the retired emperor conquered the country. Despite the fact that the author explicitly said that at one point, then went on to talk about these nobly bred families again 🤦🏻‍♀️

Some things that might offend people:
Spoiler

I was very unhappy when she introduced dogfighting as a money making endeavor to her acquaintance. C'mon author, that's not cool. There was a bit of anti-Japanese sentiment, but not too much. Although there was clearly a preference for "tender white" skin on women (this is a cultural thing but I know offends a lot of people), they also mentioned "wheat" and tanned skin as being attractive, particularly on men.

[collapse]

Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's not a masterpiece, but I liked it and it didn't infuriate me like so many novels do. The family (s) were doting and kind, and there wasn't a SML mucking things up. I rated it on the higher end because of the contrast to other novels with messy relationships and drama.

Spoiler

Zhao Han's apparently enduring love for the MC was a waste of the bonus chapters. I think the author did that to add angst for no reason.

I love this heartwarming story about farming family. Reading it feels like your heart is healing. I like how the author make the family become rich step by step, from selling cheap food at the harbor to building beauty salon and spa for aristocrat in the capital. The only downside is that the female lead adventure in some part is unnecessary for the overall story, and also illogical, for instance when she met the mermaid. I mean, is the aim for meeting mermaid under the sea in just... more>> to make up for the word count? Nothing happened after that meeting.

However, the overall story is excellent and it deserve rating 4.3 at the least. This is the best family-genre story set in ancient time that I've ever read so far! <<less

Well I do enjoy this story. I accompanied since it have a few chapters. It's basically a slice of life in old times with a hint of xianxia.

I like how the MC is, although she is a bit s*upid and naive and get a lot of troubles.... if wasn't for the ML and steward shu she would probably have a bad end (well not totally because of her cheat). I like how she was able to change fates not only from her family but also of all people around her... more>> (closely related or not). I confess I was a little curious about how would this world be developed in the future.... Because we don't have only MC who transmigrated, we have more people too, and all of them changed a lot the story of this world, with their actions.

ML I think he was quite good, if we take in consideration that this was ancient times, ML and his family was quite good to MC. Yes, he is childish and pettysh, also I fell like he want to monopolize her to much to be healthy.... but he control his urges quite well.... His father and brothers are the same so is probably a trait from his family.

I also saw people saying about pe*ophilia and I doesn't think it's true in the mc/ML relationship. Yes the ML took interest in MC when she was too young (like 10 yo). But he didn't convet her in a s*xual way, he even told her a lot of times that her young body didn't peak his interest and she should grow first. He likes her because it's her we can clearly see this in the spoiler I will let.

MC also is not useless without her cheat ok (also will put in the spoilers) she just lost her confidence because she was too dependant on it (even ML thinks that she shoul use her cheat less).

Spoiler

First: what made the prince look to MC first was: he couldn't read her emotions, she had clear eyes and he could fell calmer around her. Later he found her maneirism different and funny and start to fallow in love with her. He also respected her greatly, he was willing to take her probation period. He did pamper her and wanted to put a "mark" that she was his fast because he wasn't confidant to truly have her.... we can see that a lot of young lords have interest in her specially because she acts out of norm from normal girls in that time, and MC family also doesn't likes him because of his status, MC also was reluctant are first because she though he was just using her as plaything and because of his status. The two of them only kissed when she was 16, before they would only high each other or held hands (don't think this is the mentality of a pe*ophile). Also although MC had an adult soul I also doesn't think its pe*ophilia in her side because I think in this novel soul is immortal, they don't count the age of the soul and MC andp was a soul matching. Huge spoiler in the end she goes back to her old body and world and ML also transmigrate.... She is an hospital and he is her doctor, he reconize her immediately with the few hints she gave him about her past life, but decided to wait and see if it's truly her (in other to not scare her). In the end she calls his name when she saw someone with almost the same looks as ML in his previous life and he decided to tell her the true.... Yes MC is a sucker for good look people and this came from her last life lol. Although except from ML she look at the others good looking man as a fan girl look to their idol.

Second: after 670 ch we have a plot where MC and ML went to develop a rice plantation in the south.... but we have traitors who want to kill her because of her achievement is a stone in their way.... In this trip the divine stone officially could break his shackles and goes back to his world. MC stay really worried because she thinks she is not good enough without her cheat but ML tried to dissuade her because he thinks even without her cheats the food she cooks is really tasty (her hard work in the previous life wasn't for nothing), the medicine she makes is also quite good).... Later she was kidnaped (i told she was naively s*upid) by one of the traitors and was forced to produce a "immortal pill", she is starved a bit and had to work hard for many days to make. the pill (the divine stone reached her how to. make before he left but without his help it was harder to make because she had to pay attention in a lot of things that the stone helped her). After some days or month she is able to. sucefully make the pills without her cheat so yes she isn't useless just her cheat took away all of her confidence. She also is injuries in this ark and if wasn't for the Divine stone returning (with a hint of his goddess) she would be done for lol. It was one of the few chapter that actually described the ML torturing people.

Also we have few chapters in the end about her children... although MC is soft her son is black-bellied to max level and doesn't let pass the small grivances lol

Overall it was an interesting story, I like it. <<less

It's so difficult to find a good novel with female lead. Most just follow the standard formula - OP MC with 100 cheats instead of just one, then prince appears in Chapter 2, and then it's kind of all about him.

The only reason why this novel does not seem to follow the formula at first is the distinct lack of MC OP-ness, wrapped in a family drama arc that's dragged out way, wayyy, wayyyyyy too long (well over hundred chapters). MC could have relocated her parents and siblings early on... more>> (as soon as she had money in her pocket) instead she allows her hard-cheated money to be taken away and family suffers near death experiences. Even when they move it's just to the other side of the village so the family drama arc is not even over at this point.

And then when you finally think the story can start for good, it just falls back to the formula instead.

The farming / cooking / hunting makes it somewhat bearable to read but not by much. Still better than some other female MC formula novels. <<less

Not bad..

The FL not too OP.

Step by step.. she controled her 'cheat' the magic-stone.

There's also another transmigrator character the the story, so.. together they help each other.

There's quite few refreshing comedies scene/lines which didn't plagiarized from others.

Other than this... the down side of the story was the ML and FL's-Younger-Brother behaviours. At first, its was 'ok'.. but.. as the story flow.. they both getting more and more annoying🥱😴

Enjoyable story, a bit too much filler as the chapters are LONG. Some funny comedic moments. It's a josei novel, but certainly accessible to guys as well. I enjoyed the ending. Recommended.

A few things:

  • The translation is superb! They even have annotations at the end of every chapter for Chinese terms we may not be familiar with

A very heart warming story with an OP ML and even more OP FL, quite a few family drama at the begining but it lessened as the story unfold. A lot of characters are big foodies, their interaction will make you smile. All in all, the story is full of positive energy and sweet, good to uplift ones mood. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND ! Thank you the TL team and the author for letting us read such a wonderfull story! I am gonna miss Xiao Cao and co ! (TT-TT)

reading HunnyBunny 55's review turned me off this novel. Family drama and the demand for filial piety even though your mother/father or grandma/grandpa is about to sell you off to prostitution and s*avery takes too much heart to take and forgive. And then if you don't show filial piety while the entire bunch is happily waving you off to a lifetime of misery, you're the one bad apple because you don't follow your elder's advice and since you're this unfilial and evil you don't deserve happiness or pity anyway. Puhlez.

well,... more>> the good news is that there's actually a C-novel very much like this who has a very ruthless and OP MC who at the first page of the novel, attempted to mu*der her sister's trafficker. She was seen by the ML so the sordid mu*der did not conclude to its satisfying ending but the mere fact that there was a witness did not bother this MC at all. She sashayed out the ditch where the attempt took place, look the ML coldly in the eye then airily and gracefully walked away with nary a batting of her lashes.

then she proceeded to teach her evil grandma a lesson, slapped her aunts and uncles' faces like they're mere pancakes, then when she became a prince's consort, totally ignored her future father in law's sovereignty by mu*dering his beloved consort first by putting poison in her makeup then by torching her withered and decaying body in a planned arson attack. Then to top all that, she put a man's dead body besides the concubine's carcass, hereby not only putting the adulterous title on the whore's name but also putting the title cuckold on the emperor's poor head.

the title of this very engaging story? My Crown Prince Consort is a Firecracker. <<less

The story is more on the slice of life genre with a hint of romance set in ancient China. The difference with this story is that there are multiple transmigrators in the story, and does not necessarily focus too much on the class difference. The story is not as tightly based on such. In some aspects, the story may be a quite slow especially since it talks about new dishes being introduced in ancient China which the MC creates or new crops which the MC helped grow with her mystic... more>> stone. While she was talking about the process of making century eggs and popularizing it, I honestly went to buy some century eggs at the store the next day because I suddenly craved it.

MC is a mere commoner born in unfair circumstances even within their family. Her ability to rise through hardship is detailed, with the steps she took to earn money and help her family is written down step by step. My only complain about this story is how slow it is. It's very detailed, and it can get a bit boring when you want to focus on the romance aspect when the author finally started working on it. The romance is quite slow with the story, especially since MC was not a white flower or Mary Sue that a prince will fall for her tears and weakness. It's enjoyable how the ML was chasing his future wife when he realized how he felt later in the story. I personally did not mind the age difference here, because the ML liked her for very pure reasons and he voiced how he was willing to wait for her until she was old enough. Also, MC was already 30 or so in her past life. She's strong willed and was already old soul-wise, thus there was no g*ooming or anything bad about it. <<less
