**Main story completed.

This is what I call a gem!!

Honestly, I have no idea why it is not more popular. Good story, well-balanced, great character development and relationship building. A lot of action scenes, and also the romance written beautifully. The main CP interaction and connection is shown so wonderfully. 💕 The effective storytelling kept me engaged from start to finish. The writing style is really outstanding, it gives off that unique, dreamy, nostalgic, back-in-90s feel.

I spent 2 days binge reading this.. All I can say.. What a breath of fresh air, and oh all the hell these 2 boys went through!

At first this seem like a normal BL with little angst, but soon, you'll feel some foreshadowing.. The angst. And lets just say, when you get a breather, the storm comes back even quicker and harsher. Ahh!~ I cried quite abit, especially in the later chaps!

But between the MC and Ml's relationship, it's really too good!! They are really equal! They both want the... more>> best for eachother, they will do no matter what it takes, even giving up their life, and love for the other, just of the other to be happier than them, end up better than them. It's really emotionally touching, yet harsh, because reality hits them hard, and they are forced to mature.. Especially the MC..

Anyways, Gold Class Fighter, is truly a hidden gem! Even if it is written more than 10 years ago, the feelings and emotions, and characters feels so new! I truly recommend this!! <<less

Perfection!

Feel of the 80s and 90s brought by the author is too good. I loved to see this cultural backdrop. Especially the songs. The way this novel is written and translated, it gives a melancholic vibe. It flows smoothly like poetry.

One of the few novels where I had to stop just to immerse myself deeply into the story and emotions. The characters and the way they behave is very consistent and well written.

This is one of the best and most realistic romance developments I’ve read in BL/MM fiction. It’s a refreshing and nuanced take on the "enemies-to-friends-to-lovers" trope. The story follows two "tough, " initially straight men who fall for each other but struggle to express their feelings due to societal pressures. While they care deeply for one another, there are many understandable reasons keeping them apart.

I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must be to go through this, especially in the 1990s when homosexuality was stigmatized and even considered... more>> a disease. The setting just added to the emotional weight of the characters’ journey, making their conflicts feel both heartbreaking and deeply authentic. This book truly put me through an emotional rollercoaster. The slow build-up and aching pining to the heartfelt confession, raw angst, and unwavering, unconditional love, every aspect of the story was beautifully crafted. The love between the MC and ML is so profound that it left me at a loss for words. It was simply beautiful. On top of that, the smut scenes are incredibly intense, sometimes I would need to pause for a minute to just breathe.

While anyone can write about obsession or lust, it takes real skill, experience, and creativity to craft a story that conveys such deep, soul-stirring love. This book accomplished that beautifully, and its impact will stay with me for a long time. <<less

This novel has smut. The plot is their relationship and the thinghs they have to go through so they can be together in the 90 when it was also taboo for two guys to be together. Also is rare and interesting that MC is the one who realizes that he likes ML first and he goes thru a lot to open up ML for a relation of something more than a brother. I also like how MC always communicates with ML about misunderstandings or things that bothers him.

This novel is... more>> realistic about how life is in general and how time can change you. I felt like I didn't read a part of their life or about their relationship. I felt like I read their entire life. I love Yang Lei so much (MC) and is unfair how much he suffered. ML kinda annoys me a bit when he thinks he knows more well what is good for MC future and he only just hurts MC. He is also a bit hypocritical. Is not like I don't understand ML, I do, but even so ML also suffered a lot so I forgive him. They both deserve their happy ending.

All in all, this novel is really good. Is it a very beautiful love story. <<less

Added to my favorites. Best storytelling. Best main couple. It's more like a growing up story. And stories like those are right up my alley. I love the type of stories where they really make you appreciate youth. The nostalgia when they grew up is strong with this one too. I loved it.

It's seriously so good.

I almost didn't read it because it starts off a bit slow and takes a lot of time to build up the setting and explain the area and time period. But, reading this novel is absolutely worth it.

It's sad, and painful, and it hurts, but that's what makes it so real. The author doesn't skim over things if they get too painful, instead she really explains the feelings that come with those terrible things and how much happier everyone is once they work through the bad experience.

Read it, or else you're gonna miss out on learning something new about life. <<less

This story is equal parts passion and pain. I swear I have never cried this much in my LIFE. I literally can barely breathe my nose is so blocked. The fact that there's a full translation of this. I'm so grateful. Truly a beautiful novel, and it definitely deserves so much more love. The amount of heartbreak and hopelessness I felt reading this story is unmatched.

Both of the main characters are so compelling. They're both so self sacrificing, and the love they have for each other... literally just thinking about... more>> it is making me cry again. The depth of their feelings for each other is something truly special. They go through hell together, they support each other, and they would both willingly give their lives for each other.

I also love how there's no power imbalance between them. They're both powerful in their own ways, and they fight to stand on equal ground with one another. The bond they have is undeniable, which makes it even more heartbreaking when their reality is so bleak.

I felt myself just holding back dread the entire time, as the author likes to sprinkle in little moments of foreshadowing throughout the novel, something that I probably could have done without. Honestly the constant foreshadowing one liners were the only issue I had with this novel, but I'll definitely be rereading for all the sweet moments. Because trust me, there's plenty of beautiful scenes between the two leads amidst the despair that the novel eventually leads you to.

This novel made me care about literally every side character too. The mob bosses in particular had a special place in my heart. Also the women in this story were mildly annoying at times but also strangely sensible— they knew when to finally back off and actually acted in emotionally mature ways.

Also just in case you're worried this is a HE!! No tragedy tag over here! Only nitpick about this novel is that there are some lines about them both being men and super manly that are a bit cringe ngl, but I can overlook it lol <<less

Excellent storytelling and the translation is superb! I am so in love with this story and this will forever stay in my heart!♡٩ (^▿^) ۶♡ Beautiful, poignant, angsty, warm and a good amount of smut in between. And yes, a HE!❤❤❤

Yang Lei and Fang Yu will forever be one of my favorite BL couple! They were realistically portrayed by the author. Their journey to being enemies at first, then becoming gangdom 'brother's' to slowly realising their feelings, their growth from teenage years to adulthood, their struggles and dreams, it all... more>> beautifully unfold before our eyes, it's like living in that exact moment with them. You feel the pain, the joy, the longing, just about everything!

Hua Mao, my heart hurts for him!

Special shoutout to the whole gang! I feel sad when one dies, but it's the reality of gang life during that era, and glad that the evil ones all get their retribution.

This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! If you don't mind vivid description of gore, then you can skip them but please don't pass on this novel just because of that! 4.6 rating is no joke and I believe it deserves higher than that! <<less

One of the most well written novels out there. The emotions depicted are so real and complex that I could feel them as I am reading. The characters are so dynamic that growth and development can be seen as the story progresses. This book is a hidden gem and I am so grateful that the translator took the time to share this masterpiece with everyone.

I spent a long time looking for a novel worth the time, and I feel very lucky to have found this gem. What's more surprising is that it's a novel from 2011, but it feels so current. A story that I will definitely reread in the future!!!

I feel like that's all I need to say, but I'll go more in detail. The two main characters are amazing in their separate souls, and their dynamic is amazing. The side characters have depth, instead of just being there. I couldn't ask for a better translation. Must I continue?

it's how the romance in this novel is originally based on a physical relationship with a gay man and a straight man, and then the realization that the straight man became bis*xual is triggered by that physical relationship. I've disliked that forever because it implies that the physical is the core of the relationship rather than the actual people themselves. It's also weird because sexuality can't actually change, but it's a commonly used trope. In this case, though, I can see that the straight man was never actually straight because that epiphany was not only caused by lust. Also, the time skip hurt my heart so much. They broke up. QAQ.

This is a real gem.

It's been so long that I find a novel this interesting, so so long. I'm afraid it will end. It's so beautifully written and the story is so beautiful and heartwarming.

A total recommendation from me. I want to give more than 5 stars to this novel if possible.

This novel is too good. I could literally visualize all the characters, felt their love, pain, desire, hate, desperation... everything... what really hit me hard was the concept of being "normal" and being accepted by the society... as if we all are robots that needs to be function obnoxiously like others...

Anyways I never liked to give a review that will actually reveal anything about the plotline... Everyone has their own opinion... but it should receive high rating from all... honestly very few novels let me felt this realistic and moved... more>> me so deeply...I can easily place it beside SAYE, A certain someone, Tail hook etc...

After just one chapter, I was hooked – this story's a total masterpiece. Set in the late '80s and early '90s, it delves into the gang culture and the lack of awareness around homosexuality during that time, as our two straight guys navigate their exploration and acceptance of it. Yes the journey isn't easy but it's a beautiful depiction of love.

The writing style really grabs you. Author has a way to pique interest u think u get the plot but u don’t u will always be surprised. Plus, the foreshadowing?... more>> It keeps you on your toes, always guessing.

I loved the songs in between thanks to the translator for sharing the links it really sets the vibe listening to them while reading. The intimate scenes are also detailed and well written. Although I'll admit, there were moments where the gang violence got a bit too much for me – but hey, you can always skim through those parts if it's not your thing.

Verdict? A Gold Class Novel. You gotta read it. <<less

This is indeed one of those rare to find gems. I have a soft spot for star-crossed lovers, and Yang Lei-Fang Yu were exactly the type I love. The pining, the separation, the passion, the angst, the love, this had it all. While the writing style was definitely in a way, strange, and perhaps even sometimes annoying, this never deterred me from the overall sheer enjoyment this novel brought.

As for our main pair, they have the chemistry! (And lots of s*xual scenes). It's hard to see such unconditional, passionate and... more>> raw love in most romance novels nowadays. I was even greatly taken back at their constant sacrifices and gestures of romance.

This novel really had me contemplate a lot of broader concepts, and I experienced a lot of melancholy and sympathy for characters like Hua Mao, Ding Wen, and by extension Yang Lei and Fang Yu, and how difficult it must have been for people like them back in the 80s and the 90s. Definitely a novel to read, even if just to encounter the onslaught of extremely raw and powerful emotions. <<less

Good story. It's very much 'tell' instead of 'show', but in this novel it didn't really bother me. The main characters are written quite realistically, their struggle with their mutual attraction is engaging and heartfelt.

It's nice to have a BL novel where both top and bottom are two actual adults, with flaws and strengths, and who have apirations and lives that don't just center around their love life. The depiction of the gangster world in the 90s and early 00s, while seen through a nostalgic lense, is enganging and doesn't... more>> shy away from the sinister parts, but also flesh out the world so it becomes believable why these young men become gangsters and why they are all so dedicated to each other.

Lots of steamy scenes and again, it's nice that both gong and shou are written as adult, masculine men with multi-faceted personalities. No weak shou vs strong gong, they feel like real people. Maybe a bit dry or boring at times, but the ending is earned and satisfying. One of the better danmei novels out there. <<less

BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL. Good things need to be said three times. Honestly this story is definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotion. The happiness, the pain that they went through. Their sacrifices to each other are just so beautiful. Their journey is not easy but that what makes it special and meaningful. I'm sad that it's finished but I'm glad that I read it. I hope one day I can find someone like Fang Tu..

i wish I could give more than 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Simply a masterpiece, well written, well translated, full of drama action love. Characters were full of realistic approach, twists and turns kept me hooked on.

best part was reconciliation of ML and MC plus Hua mao finally finding love.

Its really difficult to find a good read after such excellent story.
