The notorious imperial court lackey and the meritorious military general were well-known for their mutual dislike, a pair of arch-enemies set in stone. Who could have foreseen the unexpected change in the winds of heaven: the general injured on the battlefield, both legs disabled, and even forced by the emperor to marry his nemesis.

With one marriage edict, two people with mutual hostility are forced to marry and live under the same roof. Yet after these long days together, they come to the realization that this fellow is not truly devoid of any saving grace/unattainable and high out of reach.

So I finally finished this book after picking it up and dropping it at least twice lol. This is mostly court politics/intrigue-focused. The main couple was really cute. I've read a number of politics-focused novels so I skimmed parts of the book because the tropes and arcs become a little predictable.

This was such a joy to read. There's plenty of novels out there that rely too much on miscommunication tropes and slow buildups to keep the plot going. Golden Stage has your mains get together fairly soon, and has am entertaining plot outside of the romance. Both MC and ML are independent of each other- there's no dependency issues here, no big age gaps, no toxicity or unnecessary angst. All in all, a very wholesome read!

The 1 star I'm taking away for: Prose flow-though likely due to translation. A few... more>> plot points were way too convenient, so much they made me laugh. These things I don't really care for, but as others have said I didn't enjoy the

This story made me hella mad! Why my boys have to suffer so much T.T Actually, it was my first historical novel that also had a plot about politics. It was really interesting, but it made my heart hurt.

Every time when main characters had to separate, I was really sad. I know that it is logical, but I hate it... Can't it be just peaceful and they will stay together happily? Author had no mercy till the end. Even at the end of extras you think that maybe in the future one of them will die and I feel so bad.

Overall, it is a great novel. I liked it. <<less

I've adored this novel from start to finish.

Can you believe that the main couple actually likes and cares about one another?!!! When there is misunderstanding, it's not contrived and actually resolved?! What is this trickery? :D :D

It's not all tooth-rotting fluff, though. There is conflict and drama, but again: NOT CONTRIVED.

10/10 recommend!

Spoiler

I also really enjoyed the "you know what, all these emperors are kinda shit" aspect of it. Very refreshing.

this is my very first historical danmei and im not disappointed!!! The way the author weaved the story and how the translators thoroughly translated the story is just soooo damn good!!! Not to mention the very realistic characters of this story that made me feel like im inside the story itself.

P.S - I noticed some comments that said the story have a slight slow start and it really is. But once you get through 1-3 chapters it will be okay. This story deserves its rating

i am so glad I came across this randomly one day and decided to read it on a whim. It was definitely worth it.

Golden Stage is about raw politics, war, betrayls and so on as expected from a typical political historical fiction. At first I had my reservations as to whether I would even be able to read through this particular genre because most of these (according to my own personal opinion) tend to drag out so much that the reader loses interest halfway through. But Golden Stage is one... more>> such bl that sets each arc perfectly neither letting it be too boring nor too draggy.

Another reservation of mine with this was the romance aspect. Usually the entire plot is so fixated on politics and other similar sub plots that the romance aspect of it gets pushed back. But GS really proved me wrong as there is a significant portion of romance involved and that too healthy romance between the MC and ML which will make you honestly long for a relationship like that.

One of the most important aspect of this is the MC and ML. Both of them are a pair of strong people with strong convictions yet at the same time they're so loving and caring towards each other it'll make you melt. The couple has such a strong bond and healthy communication, they can overcome anything tbh.

Golden Stage can be depicted brutally but at the same time it is basically a healthy combo of everything and this definitely should be read by everyone who is interested in such genres. <<less

I have watched BL set in historical settings, but I usually avoid reading them. This was my first time reading and I have to say that I have been missing out on a lot. The golden stage is a very wholesome work of art.

I don't like reading pure romance so I very much appreciated that there was an actual plotline outside of romance. The history was quite technical, but the plot was very interesting and realistic. The romance was also quite satisfying-sweet, but not overbearing and passionate without being off-putting.

However,... more>> I had a few problems. One of the problems is that the characterisation was a bit unclear with regards to the MC and ML. I also felt that the MLs character was a bit short-changed in comparison to the MC.

Another problem is that
Spoiler

the ML was maliciously exposed to an addictive drug and had to endure withdrawals for an year. Granted that this is contained in less than five chapters, but I have a personal bias again drug ab*se in romance novels so I was quite uncomfortable.

The issue is however not big enough to mess with my overall enjoyment of the novel.

It is worth reading. <<less

Another very good "married a male wife" novel. This novel has romance at its core but the main couple are both intelligent and capable men who are dedicated to their goals, their men, and their country. So the romance is there but takes a back seat to all the politics and in-fighting that occurs at the imperi court and on the battlefield.

I like the realism of the plot, that sometimes bad things happen to good people and there's no way to get justice for them. The cast of supporting characters... more>> are well-developed and the plot has a good, steady progression that mixes romance with comedy and suspense.

Definitely recommended. There's a happy ending! <<less

I think my expectations were too high because I saw people raving over this online. It was pretty well-written, good characters, and had a alright plot but it just wasn’t for me I guess. Too ’political’ and not enough romance, there’s some good mushy lines but overall there wasn’t anything in the novel that could leave a deep impression. To be honest it was hard to keep reading, I could easily drift off and get bored, it took so long to finish because it just couldn’t keep me invested. Too... more>> bad, I wouldn’t bother trying to read this a second time. <<less

Has some of the really disgusting part that I don't want to sleep and imagine it. You can read why I said that. To put it briefly ML encountered something on his journey and it's not pleasant.

MC and ML relationship is pretty much the highlight but also the political conflict thats revolves around the main couple. The conspiracy is pretty apparent but it made the story a lot more interesting. Just that a lot of the terms can be unfamiliar. A lot of kudos tho for the translator who explains... more>> them to their best of abilities.

I'd say the one thing I think is too bad was the lack of intention to the side characters. You see these guys come and go. They are important in the position their given to but are not really explored about their characters. Aside from a few but then they only exist when needed to.

So really a pretty good read. <<less

This story presents me with a dilemma in rating, because I went in with pretty high expectations that fell short over the course of the book, yet within the span of two months it begins to warrant a re-read. The 4/5 reflects this fairly well.

The plot exists, and is decent. The short of it is that some people in charge think that you can just mistreat your army and expect them to protect you. The long of it involves the usual slough of court politics and dramatics that make their... more>> appearances in this subgenre. It does not lack for complexity, but is luckily not the most dense of politics, you can follow it without a character chart.

MC and ML are both incredibly well written for the most part. They both have decently-thought-out backstories on their own, but every single one of their interactions with one another also brings something to the table. Together and apart, they are both very interesting to follow about their business, whether or not pressing things are happening.

Yet, I have some pretty big issues with it.

  • On the mildest level, others have said it before me, but this book sure suffers from lack of deep secondary characters. It is not actually a huge concern, but sometimes a scene just felt like the MC or ML parked in front of a room of cardboard cutouts. Not unreadable, but not something that makes me care about the cast.
  • On the next level, one that you could title, "Uh???" we have the author's unfortunate and misguided depiction of addiction. It did not have to be perfect, or lifelike, but zero research went into this portion of the novel, and it shows.
  • And in the last level, my own personal hopes and dreams for a decent depiction of physical disability were shattered and mended several times over. The end result was probably net positive, but it was a wild ride.
    • On the positive side, our disabled protagonist is not miraculously "healed" by the end. The disability is typically treated respectfully, and is not bemoaned as being the end of the world by the protagonist. The ML pulls off one of the most romantic gestures my disgaybled little heart has ever seen. Occasionally accurate depictions of pain levels, medications, and side effects.
    • Negatives: The use of qualifiers around the word "disabled" and the zig-zag-ing of the actual condition with the use of a plot... Device.
Upsides!

  • The only respectful depiction of court eunuchs I have seen, possibly ever.
  • The sheer romance of renovations of all things. Good stars above.
  • Not a horrific amount of misunderstandings or secrets after the plot kicks off.
  • Use of "wife" is not meant to be degrading, and comes from both sides. It ends up being a genuinely cute and playful term for once, instead of some weird imposition of gender roles.
All in all? Worth a read. Maybe even worth a re-read. <<less

I honestly don't write reviews but this really deserves it, the loveliest couple that I've ever read, they def deserve each other! They respect each other, and the amount of love they give each other is just *chef's kiss*. The extras are also top-notch!!! Great work for the author and thank you so much for the translator! This novel is now included in my top 10 : 3. If you're looking for a sign to read this, the this is the sign! Go read it!!

Wah... incidentally Golden Stage has a non-toxic danmei relationship.

It's rare to respect each other until it's very gentle.

The Golden stage has a powerful royal political story, numerous wars, envious romances between war commanders and royal guard captains.

What do we get?

- Good plot

- Interesting twist villain

- Romance 18++

- Sometimes the characters are soft and sometimes tough.

The most cunning loving people.

This novel is okay.

MC- He's the best! Loved his character because he's very clever, and confident. The novel has given him, a higher status, I like that too. He did so much for his motherland not just because he's a general, but because of his own morals, because of the way he grew up, family matters and so on. But he sacrificed a lot and that, broke my heart.

Spoiler

Even though he's half paralyzed, that doesn't stop him from going forward, And I really wanted to kill that king several times!!!

[collapse]

ML- He's a very devoted lover, the way he took care of MC... that was so sweet!!! ML is also smart, sharp eyed, can fight.

Even though it says enemies become lovers, there wasn't a huge enimity, between them, we can even say that it's one sided. They had pretty good relationship from the very beginning of the novel, since they are a power couple, they could depend on each other.

The novel is heavily based on war and political conflicts. But it doesn't get boring because of the MC and ML. Their chemistry is really good!

I started reading this because many had recommended. I'm writing this after about two weeks I've finished. I agree, there were scenes I whole heartedly fell for, but they were just OKAY, not the best. This novel didn't impress me, and wasn't up to my expectations. But still it's okay to give it a try. <<less

Golden stage novel is a masterpiece. No doubt in this. Although not perfect but as we all know nothing is perfect in this world.

Author did a excellent job in writing and narration.

... more>> YanFu couple is most beautiful couple in the history of danmei. Yan Xiaohan is the best male lead in the danmei history. He is my favourite after reading this novel. Followed by Lan Zhan.

Fu shen, well he is like a spring breeze that will lift up ur mood and give you feeling of living ur life at your own cost and also never to give up ur chance on living after so many huddles in life.

This book has romance that makes heart warm and fluffy and suspense that makes the heart tense for YanFu. Well, I was on the pins and needles when reading the second half of novel. I was always praying for yanfu.

In the end, I would say just read the novel. You will not regret it. On the other hand you will say wow, this is called a story.

This novel is fresh breathe in danmei novels. ♥️🖤 I am gonna miss my YanFu couple. 💜 And also love you Yan Xiaohan.. 🤩♥️ <<less
