Cheng Yujin was the elder twin sister, who was supposed to be engaged to an excellent man. I absolutely adore this story. MC feels like a real human being with her quirks and ML is just adorable. Shhh spoiler * I loved the scene when she called him ninth uncle in bed.* It was so hilarious. Fav novel besides yandere came during the night. Love Love love.

Note: If you're worried about the 'uncle and niece' relationship, he doesn't know her as a young child, and their first real interaction is when she's 14 (lived to 16 in past life) and he's 19, which isn't what I'd prefer by any means but not that bad if you have tolerance for ancient times light novel BS where FLs especially are young, and act like grown adults. The only thing I found really skeevy is not between our ML and FL and is in the extras - maybe avoid... more>> extra 2, details in spoiler tag.

The ML in the original world who is the Emperor but ends up alone has dreams of his life in universe of this novel, where he is happily married with children, and then gets transmigrated into his 19 year old self in a third timeline at the point the novel starts. He seemed to be in his late 20s before, and intends to marry his 'fated soulmate' who is 14 at that point, which is a yikes from me.

As for the actual story, it's pretty good. FL is maybe too good at everything (somewhat excused by her family situation and upbringing or lack thereof forcing her 'perfection') but I like that she's described as rational and calculating and actually is, rather than the author just telling us she's smart, and she has an arc over the course of the novel. Her ego/careful calculation of benefits and looking out for herself is her charm point as an FL, and the times where she gets to tear someone down all while retaining the moral high ground are some of the highlights of the novel. The build up between the ML and FL is slow and believable, and honestly the best part of the story.

Once the novel moves on to the palace drama part it loses a bit of its charm along with its reduced focus on the main characters, and is pretty predictable if you've read a few novels of this genre. That said, it's still well-written, and characters throughout have believable motivations and actions. Supposed schemers don't just suddenly hold the idiot ball when it's their turn to get face-slapped; people's faults are forecasted, and they act consistently. The exception is

the Emperor suddenly going off the deep end in the last few chapters - I guess you could say it's foreshadowed, and similar cons do exist IRL, but tbh it kinda reads as the author needing the ML/FL to be Emperor and Empress by the end of the story and rushing it to finish the novel.

In all, a good if not exceptional read where the real attraction is the FL and her development over the story, and the early build up of the relationship between FL and ML. I'd give the first part of the story a 4.5 and the latter a 3.5-4, so it gets an overall score of 4. <<less

I really enjoyed this, the FL is kinda wacky. Her pursuit of a good husband in the beginning was hair raising for me because she is skillful about it and you know if she isn't interrupted she would bag her target. I was nervous for the ML at times because she might get herself a marriage arrangement if he took his eyes off her. It's classic from this author, the original ML and FL relationship with reincarnated memories collapses as the oriFL interferes with FLs fate and the usual delusion... more>> (her fate should be mine) is destroyed in a satisfying face-slapping manner. The FL family is sort of a neutral party as they don't really act out but they only treat FL perfunctorily until ML puts his foot in. I don't know what to make of it. All in all satisfying story (if I ignore the rushed throne fight at the end) with a nice previous life extra that hints at more HEs for the previous life ML & FL. Excellent translation. <<less

It was a beautiful story. One I read from start to finish without getting bored or impatient.

The main character wasn't Mary Sue and she had to work hard and use everything she had to not fall into an unfavourable statiotion. She isn't spiteful and revenge driven but isn't an all-forgiving saint either.

The interactions between the main character and the male lead were beautifully done. It wasn't an all-consuming love at first sight neither there was too much push and pull that tired me.

I loved everything in this novel. I highly reccomend it!

The character development and background story of our ML and FL are quite similar. They fit each other so well that it's cute.

Out MC's personality is so realistic. She is not perfect, instead she's very hard-working, and quite accomplished. She's the best goal-achiever character you'll find. It takes her a lot of chapters to give her trust to the ML, but her independent behavior just makes you admire her more and more. She doesn't do unto others what she doesn't... more>> want done unto herself. That makes her fair, coupled with her assertive and responsible nature. And so black-bellied! She'll win you over! <<less

Really loved reading this one. The MC & ML stick to their character setting till the very end, there's no sudden ooc. The MC & ML have similar personality which I find rare, usually MC & ML have opposite personality. I found it a little funny yet sad when MC is trying hard to catch a husband but ML keeps interrupting her lol. But imo the best moments are when MC is scolding someone.

The inner courtyard and the later palace intrigue was also interesting, I didn't find myself skim reading... more>> too much.

Novel also touched a lot on the many difficulties, restrictions and double standards on women in that era which made me feel grateful I'm living in 21st century.

Translation was also not bad, there were some minor grammar mistakes and some sentences could be rewritten to flow more easily. But otherwise it's easy to read. I also appreciate TL notes on the attires and other stuff. Thank you translator for your hard work.

I loved this novel, well it was common reincarnation, revenge and taking your life in your own hands type of story, but it was more enjoyable than most. I like that the FL although was nit in a favourable position at her home still knows how to act. The ML was cunning but sweet at times his background was very well laid by the author.

Her sister seriously full of heroine complex like she us noce but everyone is bad to her. I loved the fact she expressed to her previous... more>> husband that it was his duty to maintain harmony in the house as it was his mother and his wife, so he have a large responsibility, which I think is relevant. The previous husband's mother ohh my god the devil MIL.

The translation I read is from Ariel Rain. The translation is good ish. There are some careless mistakes but they don't affect the overall experience.

The pacing is pretty even. There was always something that soon happens and in between, the tone was kinda peaceful. The ending did feel a tad quicker than most of the story.

Plot: 3.9/5

I loved all the parts before the court or political intrigue. I was super invested in the couple's relationship and in our MC’s struggles to secure a good life. I was less interested after that but still I'm entertaining. It's just because I am not interested in political struggles lol.

Romance: 4.3/5

I quite liked it! There was no passionate stuff or anything but I was super invested haha. It's all due to the MC, really. She's rather different from other girls and it is easy to support her even though she is really not a typical good-person type of protagonist. But it's understandable for a woman of that time period. I also like that the relationship is so based on respect and maturity.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 3.8/5

A typical setting for these types of stories.

Characters: 4/5

The main characters are good. My favourite is the MC. She's so smart, hardworking and a determined perfectionist, making her the best woman of that time period. The best part for me is when she has to work a lot to achieve what she wants. Once she kind of got it and is part of the imperial family, my interest lessened though. Because she doesn't have to actively do a lot of things in each chapter anymore haha.

Personal Enjoyment: 4/5

Quite enjoyed it.

Don't know if I already reviewed this but it needs to be said! This FL is the shit! Do you want an independent FL? An FL who does not bend down (unless it's to retreat in order to advance), An FL who picks, chooses, and refuses suitors as her future husband. Then immerse yourself in this novel.

I enjoyed the story, it was quite good. I always like more logical characters and this story certainly offered them. It was quite interesting to see the author justify long dialogue through the characterization of the MC - she is wordy and must meticulously set up and control conversations. It makes for well justified, long segments of dialogue. I appreciated the author creating a logical character, yet not abandoning emotion to do so. In aspects the MC cares about, she will show emotion, even if she sacrifices everything else. In... more>> all other aspects, she is able to be cold and rational - for those with distant personalities, it is a quite reasonable stance to have. I also enjoyed how the author set up the MC's problems. To borrow a quote from somewhere, probably a YouTube video, injustice and helplessness are some of the strongest drivers of emotion in a story. This story has plenty of both. There is much injustice poured upon the MC. The circumstances of her adoption. Being stuck in the middle of conflicting branches of family. The elders who want to sell her for profit. The fiance who reneges on their marriage agreement. The list goes on. When she is faced with injustice, she is often times helpless to solve the problem completely. It really makes me, as the reader, want to cheer her on. In regards to the relationship she has with the ML, there were some parts that I disliked about him. Communication was a large part. He failed many times at this and it resulted in some situations where he became the antagonist, in a way. In that respect, the story did not delve into much detail about whether it was solved or if he improved. However, due to the setting of the story, I guess you could say that the ML was progressive for his time. Even with this one flaw, I still admire his sincerity. If I were to keep talking about the cons, I would say that this story became quite predictable around the part where the MC left her maternal home. I think the earlier parts of the story were superior to the latter parts. It's probably because I read too many similar stories, so don't be too offput by this. The story has a well balanced mix of court politics, romance and interpersonal relationships. What I liked most was that both the MC and the ML despite portraying themselves as perfect in front of everyone, their characters were flawed which made them more real and less generic like some (or many) other Mary Sue characters. Yes, they eventually achieve everything perfectly, but the effort and emotions needed to be put forth for such a perfect facade is explored well by the author. Though I would have loved to see a... more>> more detailed focus on their romance, but overall it was a good read with subtle fluff and court politics that doesn't become too much for a reader who is mostly focused on romance. <<less

I completed the novel without the extra's because I felt it ended well. Also I didn't want any side extras just in case they start discussing side relationships etc. The story was well written with enough depth that it leaves you satisfied. It is worth the read.

I can empathize with both difficulty of our MC and her twin sister, u can't really hate her twin sister, the environment make her like that, u also can't really hate her ex-husband bcs his upbringing and environment make him think like that but in the end u blame them, cus although environment can make them like that their personality also play a big deal, her twin sister obsession or love or maybe both for mc's ex-husband make her life became tragedy, she is know the previous life went wrong but still comfort herself until reality hit her into dust, the ex-husband became aware about vague memory of previous life, but still get knot in his heart and make their married life tragedy story, our MC and ML is similar people and I feel warm and joy for their interaction and feeling for each other

I enjoyed reading this. Definitely recommend it. It's not for people who love a crowded itinerary of events tho. It focuses on the FL and ML circumstances, not their lives or even feelings, just their circumstances. What I mean by this is, unlike other novels with a similar concept, it doesn't really delve into the details of anything that happens, if we take running a business for an example, it will just mention that FL came to posses a shop, and then that's the end of it. It more focuses... more>> on the circumstances of relations and their dynamics. The bad about it is, similarly to other novels of it's type, it frames unhappiness and misfortune as a sort of mistake in the woman's behavior, when truth is, their lives are much more ruled by luck than anything. That's an entire can of worms so I won't dwell into it too deeply and just go onto the next thing. The FL doesn't really hold much emotion and there is no revenge to indulge in, but it's a pity the author didn't fully commit to that aspect of her and missed out on making this no romo in the vein of Job of an imperial concubine.

There's a handful of things some ppl won't notice and others won't care about, but there a number of tiny 'this was clearly a thought by a modern person' instances in the novel, like, the ML mentioning FL's long hair and the care of it, when men also had really long hair and had the same washing/oiling routine.

All in all an enjoyable read. <<less

I reread this 3 times! Lol, its a great read. CYJ is a real badass MC. Lol she very sharp tongue and vry deep hearted, she doesn’t have much gold finger except her ninth uncle, lol and her perfectionist side, which she horn to survive. M L also considered powerful but in a very realistic way. Both of them complement each others very much. It’s a very nice read. Thank you

A good read. However, not recommended for binging... should be read over a few days or weeks since the constant conniving and scheming gets tedious.

MC, Cheng Yugin, is 14 years old at the start of the story. She is intelligent, mature, and single minded. Through most of the plot, she is scheming to get a good marriage. The importance of marrying well is of utmost importance since her future life and happiness depends on future husband. Women are not valued in her society.

ML, Li Chengjing aka Cheng Yuanjing, is her... more>> 9th uncle but actually a prince in hiding. Only MC's grandfather knows his identity since it is hidden from the rest of the family.

At the beginning of the story, MC had a dream of her previous life when her husband liked her younger sister and she died during childbirth.

Later when her fiancee came to cancel their engagement, she wasn't surprised. Her younger twin sister had revealed to him that she was the one who saved him first and warmed him with her body. After she left, MC was the one who found him in a cave and brought him back. This is where the misunderstanding originated. The fiancee thought MC schemed against her sister.

So MC had no fiancee and a bad reputation due to the canceled engagement. From there, she starts plotting. She uses whoever and whatever to achieve her goals... even ML. She never considered ML as a potential husband since she finds out his identity early on.

ML falls in love with MC first.

They do eventually get married after ML takes back his identity.

They have boy/girl twins.

ML becomes emperor after his father is poisoned. MC becomes empress. ML has only MC was his wife for the rest of their lives.

I'm not gonna give a rating because I don't think this is really my genre. But it did put Romance in genre and not just Romantic Subplot so I didn't expect so little romance, despite the slow romance tag. Unless it picks up after chapter 100..

This was about the struggles in her family and I guess palace later on but I stopped at chapter 100 so I'm not entirely sure. I really liked "Eight Treasures Trousseau" and quite a few others of supposedly the same genre but this felt really... more>> different. I wanted to skip through a lot of chapters and only read it in fear of missing out on details but it's actually really long winded. It's just weird 😂

I may come back to it later but I'll put it off for now. <<less
